  1. 36 pitches for cappy after 3 innings and no walks. That's not bad at all. With the lineup the cards are putting out there thsi is exactly the way to pitch to them.
  2. The cardinal lineup looks a lot less impressive without Edmonds and Walker. Taguchi batting before Pujols? Hopefully he will only have solo shots tonight.
  3. Just because he got through these innings doesn't change my opinion. He was at 110 pitches and everyone in the pen was rested. Why do we have 12 men in the pen if we aren't going to use them? A double switch with Wes in at 3rd would have made a lot of sense to me.
  4. Davis for another inning? Why even have a bullpen if we aren't going to use them when they are all rested?
  5. Davis's career line is .069/.076/.085(ave/obp/slg) and last year he was .016/.031/.016. He is horrible even for a pitcher. On the bright side Rickie Weeks is the man. As good as he is now he is going to be that much better in the next couple of years.
  6. "only" 94 pitches but you can't expect him to go more than one inning. Davis is a horrible hitter and the pen is fully rested. I would have lifted him.
  7. Anybody pinch hit for Davis here? It's only the 5th inning but his pitch count is 94.
  8. Wow if Nedly was leaving one of our pitchers in after 110 pitches on a hot night I would be all over him. Add to that the fact the Burnett has been hurt BOTH of the last two years. It's not like it's a 1-0 game. I just don't get it.
  9. I agree that it is unlikely that the crew could win the WC this year but if they are in the hunt two things they will going for them is that they end with 25 home games in their last 37 and they will have some nice september call ups. Adding some or all of Fielder, Hart, Cruz, Cappellen, Hendrickson, and Adams could really be a boost for the final month. If they could close to a few games out by the time september rolls around I would like their chances.
  10. Please note that during spring training I was very much in support of keeping Victor in the rotation because I believed that he was a solid #4 starter for the brewers. This hot start that he is off to hasn't changed my opinion. Looking at his numbers he has struck out fewer batters than he did last year and his walk and home run totals remain almost completely unchanged. The only difference is now the league is hitting .226 instead of .278 against him. The improved brewer defense has helped but he is the poster child for a pitcher who is getting hit lucky this year. Certainly he doesn't deserve to be 2-6 but he also doesn't deserve his 2.87 ERA. If a good trade offer came along I would be more than happy to move him. Finding a replacement on our current roster would be hard but in the long run trading him now while his stock is high would be nice.
  11. If the first picks go: Upton, Gordon, Maybin, and Zimmerman then I think Tulo has to be at least considered. My guess is that we would pass on him though. Certainly pass on him if somehow one of the above 4 also slips and is available. BTW, I have a feeling that Seattle might just take Maybin and we would end up in exactly this position.
  12. It sounds likely that Upton will end up in CF and that Drew might not even be able to stay at SS. If I am the Dbacks I take upton without a doubt. I don't think this signing has changed anything.
  13. I wouldn't read too much into this but in the BA chat today the following questions about Alex Gordon came up: Tom L. from Manhattan, KS asks: If Upton is gone, do you see the royals taking anyone buy Gordon with the 2nd overall? Thanks. A:John Manuel: This probably won't make Royals fans happy . . . our understanding from other clubs is, the Royals are not going to spend a lot for that pick. Unless Alex Gordon is willing to sign for slot, and I mean just a straight bonus, he won't be the guy there. We've heard some wild rumors at the No. 2 spot, such as Texas A&M's Cliff Pennington and Rancho Bernardo HS outfielder John Drennan, as well as Oregon State outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Those are all good players, I'd say consensus first 50 talents, but not anywhere near the No. 2 pick. I understand David Glass is saying otherwise, but everything we hear is, the Royals are thinking budget first, talent second, and that's a shame. Ernie from Avenel, NJ asks: Assuming Upton goes 1st and KC passes on Gordon does Seattle take Gordon after signing Beltre long-term ? A:John Manuel: I have heard Tulowitzki and Zimmerman for them. I would tend to believe that the Royals might pass up Gordon as they have gone the cheap route the last couple of drafts. If Seattle doesn't want him then he would only have to get past the Nationals to fall to us. Still seems unlikely but even if we can't get Gordon if the Royals do go the cheap route getting the 4th best player available is better than the 5th best.
  14. Offense: Make Zambrano work. In his last outing against the brewers he had his best stuff working but the ended with a high pitch count due to patience by the brewer batters. The cub's pen is weak so the more pitches Zambrano throws early the better. Pitching/Defense: Fun stat of the day: The Brewer's have the second best Defensive efficiency in the league at 0.7121 behind only the marlins. This is one of those stats that converges quicker since the crew have already faced 679 balls in play. That's still not a huge sample but it appears that upgrades in the defense are paying off. Cappy needs to avoid walking people today and let the defense work for him. The cubs have a real soft part of the lineup with the middle infielders, catcher, and Hollandsworth if he is playing in left. You can't walk these guys because Lee/Ramirez/Burnitz can still do damage. Also, fewer outs on the base paths than the last cub series would be nice.
  15. Another great day for the bullpen. Maddux and especially Bill Castro deserve a lot of credit so far. In the offseason I know I was concerned about the pen and it as been terrific.
  16. stats are ave/obp/slg Overbay .231/.412/.423 Lee .310/.382/.517 Jenkins .194/.242/.226 Small sample but just wanted to post these in response. You would like Overbay's average a little higher but it's pretty hard to complain with a .412 OBP and Lee is off to a good start. The real problem here is Jenkins obviously. He also has 8 K's in 31 ABs. I agree a K is no worse than any other out but it still is an out and I think his K rate is not a good sign. He needs to turn it around and fast.
  17. cbs sportlines numbers for wood's fastball this inning are in the low 90's compared to the mid-upper 90's in the previous innings. maybe he is starting to tire out.
  18. With his four walks today that puts Glover's K/BB at 9/8 in 20 IP. I doubt he will be on the team by the all star break.
  19. End of the 6th. Prince has a single, triple(!), and a HR. He was up with the basesload and one out... Double play. He'll get another shot at least for the first cycle in Stars history in the 9th though.
  20. "Nearly an hour after the game, official scorer Wayne Franke changed his call on Counsell's bunt, making it an infield single, a ruling that meant all four runs were earned instead of unearned" Throw some salt in the wounds? I wonder if this will get changed back to an error later though. A good throw does get Counsell at first.
