  2. Final: Brevard County 4, Bradenton 2 'Tees snap three-game skid with 4-2 win over Bradenton Roache's blast, Peterson's relief keys Brevard's victory By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees BRADENTON, Fla. - Victor Roache drove in two and Stephen Peterson tossed four innings of perfect relief to lead the Brevard County Manatees over the Bradenton Marauders, 4-2 on Saturday night at McKechnie Field. After the Marauders (25-16 second half, 60-50 overall) grabbed a 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Roache put the Manatees (20-18, 56-48) on the comeback trail in the next half-inning. With one out in the top of the second, the former first-round pick unloaded on a ball to deep right-center field. Center fielder Raul Fortunato and right fielder Walker Gourley chased it into the gap and both made a leaping attempt to try and snare the ball. However, neither came down with it. Roache's solo clout was his team-leading 13th of the year and it knotted the game up at one. With the game still tied at one, Roache played a key part in the 'Tees rally in the fourth. Michael Reed sparked the onslaught with single to right and Cameron Garfield followed him up with a double to the opposite field, as well. On a 1-2 pitch to Roache, Bradenton starter Jason Creasy (6-7, 3.72 ERA) spiked one in the dirt. The ball caromed off the equipment of catcher Jason Stallings and flew over his head to the backstop. Reed raced home from third and Garfield advanced behind him to third to give Brevard its first lead, 2-1. The Georgia Southern product made the situation worse for Bradenton later in the at-bat. Two pitches later, Roache laced a line drive into right field. Garfield scored from third and the Manatees had a two-run advantage, 3-1. In the sixth, Roache almost clobbered his second blast of the game. However, with the wind whipping out towards right, the ball died in the left-center field warning track for a fly out. Bradenton would scratch across another run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded, passed ball, but that was the last time they would score this evening. Manatees' ace Tyler Wagner (11-4, 1.54) did not have his best stuff, but kept Brevard in the ball game. The former Utah Ute allowed just two runs - one earned - over five innings, as he tallied his 11th win of the season, which ties him with Bradenton's Chad Kuhl for the Florida State League-lead. With 91 pitches through five, a high pitch count kept Wagner from going deeper into the night. He ended his evening with two walks and four strikeouts and still leads the FSL in ERA with a 1.54 mark. Even with the short outing, Wagner's numbers over his last eight are still remarkable. In those outings, he is now 7-0 with a 0.52 ERA. Peterson came out of the bullpen and put a stop to any possible Marauder comeback. The left-handed reliever twirled his best outing of the season, as he threw four perfect innings to record his third save of the year. The Massachusetts native was efficient, too. It took Peterson just 42 pitches to retire all 12 men he faced. Brevard gave Peterson some extra cushion in the seventh. Following a lead-off double by Garrett Cooper, Nathan Orf sliced an RBI triple into the right-center field gap to increase the Manatees' lead to 4-2. Tyrone Taylor had another spectacular evening at the plate in the victory. The number two prospect in the Brewers organization, according to both Baseball America and MLB.com, pieced together a three-hit night, which included his league-leading 35th double of the year. Joe Ayrault will turn to left-hander Hobbs Johnson (10-7, 3.15) tomorrow evening at McKechnie Field with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Johnson will look to tie Wagner and Kuhl for the league-lead in wins at 11. Shane Carle (1-2, 5.40) will make his fifth start for the Marauders. Brevard County Box Score Tyler Wagner didn't have his most dominating game tonight, but still won his 11th game of the season, going five innings and giving up only one earned run. Stephen Peterson worked the final four frames without allowing a hit or a run to notch his third save. Tyrone Taylor went 3-for-4 with a double while Victor Roache singled and hit his team leading 13th home run. Mike Garza added a single and a double and Garrett Cooper doubled and walked in four plate appearances. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Brevard County Top of the 4th Michael Reed singles on a fly ball to center fielder Raul Fortunato. Cameron Garfield doubles (18) on a fly ball to right fielder Walker Gourley. Michael Reed to 3rd. With Victor Roache batting, wild pitch by Jason Creasy, Michael Reed scores. Cameron Garfield to 3rd. Victor Roache singles on a ground ball to left fielder Justin Howard. Cameron Garfield scores. With Mike Garza batting, Victor Roache caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Jacob Stallings to second baseman Max Moroff. Mike Garza doubles (15) on a fly ball to left fielder Justin Howard. Garrett Cooper flies out to right fielder Walker Gourley. Mike Garza to 3rd. Brandon Macias flies out to center fielder Raul Fortunato.
  3. Final: Brevard County 2, Bradenton 3 'Tees late rally falls short in 3-2 loss to Bradenton Manatees put tying run in scoring position, but can't finish comeback By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees BRADENTON, Fla. - Down three runs going to the ninth, the Brevard County Manatees rallied to pull within one. However, they could not complete the comeback, as the Bradenton Marauders emerged victorious, 3-2 on Friday night at McKechnie Field. With the Manatees (19-18 second half, 55-48 overall) trailing 3-0, Mike Garza reached on a walk and Brandon Macias got on board with a single in the top of the ninth. With runners on the corners, Nathan Orf stepped to the plate with two down. On a 1-0 pitch from side-arming left-hander Josh Smith, Orf cranked a ball down the right field line. Garza scored easily from third and Macias chugged home from first. Orf was in at second with a two-run double to trim the Marauders (25-15, 60-49) lead to 3-2. The next batter, Orlando Arcia, came up with a chance to deliver the game-tying blow, but could not connect on the big base-hit. After working the count full, Arcia struck out swinging against Smith to end the ballgame. Despite the loss, the two runs in the ninth snapped two big streaks for either side. Orf's two-run base knock snapped the 'Tees 28-plus scoreless inning streak, which started on Tuesday night against Jupiter. In the process, Bradenton's 19-inning scoreless streak was halted, as well. Another big streak came to the end in the final frame too. Macias' single with Garza at second ended a streak of 27-consecutive outs with runners in scoring position for Brevard County. The Marauders gave themselves a cushion early, scoring all three of their runs in the first two innings. Manatees' starter Austin Ross (7-5, 3.76 ERA) retired the first two batters he faced, but Bradenton rallied. Three straight singles from Jose Osuna, Jordan Steranka and Eric Wood brought home a run to give the Marauders the early lead, 1-0. Then Ross began to struggle with his control. Back-to-back walks to Justin Howard and Jin-De Jhang forced home another run to put Bradenton up 2-0. In the second, the Marauders put runners at first courtesy of a walk to Raul Fortunato and single by Max Moroff. With one out, Osuna lofted a towering, high fly ball to left field. With the wind blowing out to right, the ball died at the warning track. Victor Roache made the catch, but Fortunato tagged and scored from third to extend the Bradenton lead to three. Ross settled down after that, as he finished his night with three straight scoreless innings. The former LSU Tiger allowed just two more baserunners, as he took his fourth consecutive loss. Ross finished the evening with three runs allowed on five hits. He walked four and struck out four. Despite a high pitch count, Marauders starter and ace Tyler Glasnow (8-5, 1.63) dominated over six innings. The top prospect no-hit the 'Tees into the fifth, but did have issues with his location. Glasnow allowed just two hits, but walked four. He struck out five, as he recorded his eighth win of the year. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.63, good for second-best in the league behind Brevard's Tyler Wagner (10-4, 1.53). Wagner will take the mound tomorrow to try and put an end to the Manatees three-game losing streak. First pitch at McKechnie Field is slated for 6:30 p.m. Jason Creasy (6-6, 3.62) will get the start for Bradenton and try to be the first pitcher to out duel Wagner since June 3. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees tried to mount a rally in the ninth, but left the tying run on second base. Brevard County Top of the 9th Pitching Change: Josh Smith replaces Ryan Hafner. Victor Roache flies out to center fielder Justin Maffei. Mike Garza walks. With Alfredo Rodriguez batting, passed ball by Jin-De Jhang, Mike Garza to 2nd. Alfredo Rodriguez flies out to right fielder Raul Fortunato. Brandon Macias singles on a fly ball to right fielder Raul Fortunato. Mike Garza to 3rd. Nathan Orf doubles (25) on a line drive to right fielder Raul Fortunato. Mike Garza scores. 4. Final: Jupiter 1, Brevard County 0 Lopez fans eight, but 'Tees fall to Jupiter By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/3/6/80125436/cuts/Lopez_6.16_640x360_hcx24ebk_8cdl7fx9.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez allowed just one run and struck out a season-high eight men over seven innings, but took the loss in a 1-0 decision agains the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Despite a terrific start by Jorge Lopez, in which the starter recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, the Brevard County Manatees fell to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium, 1-0. Lopez (8-7, 4.09 ERA) was tremendous over seven innings, but Jupiter scratched one run across against the right-hander in the fifth. With one out, Blake Barber hit a high-bouncing ground ball to second baseman Nathan Orf. The second hop soared over the glove of a leaping Orf and into right field for a single. The next Hammerheads hitter burned Brevard County (19-17 second half, 55-47 overall). Justin Bohn laced a line drive into the left-center field gap. Barber scored all the way from first and Bohn chugged to third and slid in safely with an RBI triple to give Jupiter (12-27, 39-69) a 1-0 lead. That triple was the only mistake Lopez made all night. Despite taking the loss, Lopez only allowed one run on four hits in his seven innings of work. The starter walked three and recorded at least one strikeout in each of his first five innings. Lopez's most impressive frame came in the top of the second. After striking out the leadoff man, Lopez allowed Avery Romero to double and then walked the next two men to load the bases. The Manatees' starter escaped the bases-loaded jam, however, as he struck out Cody Keefer and Barber to end the inning and keep the game scoreless. Brevard County had its best opportunity to score in the bottom half of that second inning. Jupiter starter Scott Lyman got the first two 'Tees to ground out, but then walked Victor Roache, Alfredo Rodriguez and Parker Berberet to load up the bases. Greg Hopkins came up with a chance to give the Manatees the first run of the game and he came dangerously close. The right-handed hitter slammed a line drive, but it was right at the first baseman. Viosergy Rosa squeezed the ball in his glove and the Hammerheads got out of the inning, unscathed. The 'Tees loaded the bases again in the eighth, but could not come up with a run. Orlando Arcia led off with a single and Tyrone Taylor followed with a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. After Hammerheads reliever Reid Redman struck out the next Brevard County hitter, the Hammerheads elected to intentionally walk Mike Garza to load the bases. The move paid off for Jupiter, as Redman recorded a strikeout and a fly out to end the frame. Once again, the 'Tees had a shot in the ninth. Berberet started the frame against Jupiter closer Sean Donatello by hustling to first to beat out an infield single. Jose Sermo came in to pinch run and Hopkins laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner up to second base. Orf came up with the tying run in scoring position and hit a soft ground ball in front of home. Donatello fielded it and saw that Sermo had ranged far off of second base. The pitcher caught Sermo in a rundown between second and third, and eventually the third baseman Barber tagged him out. During the rundown, Orf made a heads-up baserunning play and moved up to second base. That gave Brevard County another quality shot at tying the game with a runner in scoring position and two outs. Donatello, however, was able to strike out Arcia to end the game and seal his fourth save of the season. Lyman (5-8, 2.89 ERA) picked up the win with six shutout innings. The righty only allowed four hits and left five Manatees stranded in scoring position. Lyman struck out two and walked three. The Manatees suffered a shutout loss for the second consecutive night and settled for a 2-2 series split with Jupiter. Brevard County hits the road on Friday for another four-game set against a Florida State League South Division, as the Manatees prepare to take on the Bradenton Marauders. Austin Ross (7-4, 3.66 ERA) is scheduled to start for the 'Tees against Tyler Glasnow (7-5, 1.74 ERA). First pitch at McKechnie Field is slated for 6:30 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Tough-luck loss for Jorge Lopez who pitched brilliantly, striking out eight and giving up just one run in seven innings. Tyrone Taylor went 2-for-4 with a double and Parker Berberet added two hits and a double. Brevard County Play-By-Play The only run of the game came on a fifth inning triple. Jupiter Top of the 5th Cody Keefer strikes out swinging. Blake Barber singles on a ground ball to center fielder Tyrone Taylor. Justin Bohn triples (3) on a line drive to center fielder Tyrone Taylor. Blake Barber scores. Noah Perio grounds out to first baseman Mike Garza. Matt Juengel flies out to right fielder Michael Reed.
  5. Final: DSL Brewers 14, DSL Blue Jays 2 DSL Brewers Box Score The Brewers bats came to life as they racked up 14 runs on 14 hits to beat the Blue Jays 14-2. Juan De Los Santos led the way, going 3-for-5. Yerald Martinez, Nicolas Pierre and Johel Atencio singled and doubled and Roosevert Chal went 2-for-3 and drew a walk. Joan De La Cruz started and went six innings, allowing just an unearned run to notch the win and Carlos Luna tossed the final three innings to earn the save. Joantgel Segovia left the game after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. DSL Brewers Play-By-Play The Brewers took the lead in the first and never looked back. 6. Final: Jupiter 5, Brevard County 0 Manatees shutout by Jupiter, 5-0 By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had trouble manufacturing offense against Austin Brice and the Jupiter Hammerheads in a 5-0 loss on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Brice (7-7, 3.92 ERA) held the Manatees (19-16 second half, 55-46 overall) to just three hits in 5.1 innings. The starting pitcher exhibited some control problems with four walks, but struck out three and did not allow a run in the winning effort. Brevard County threatened a handful of times, but never got a runner to third base. The best chance for the 'Tees came in the fifth when Alfredo Rodriguez hit a one out single. Rodriguez was thrown out trying to steal second, but Brandon Macias worked a two out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Nathan Orf then got a hold of a pitch from Brice, but it fell into the glove of left fielder Matt Juengel a couple of feet in front of the wall. The 'Tees had another opportunity to score in the sixth, as Brice issued back-to-back one-out walks to Tyrone Taylor and Michael Reed. The Manatees' threat was short lived, however. Righty Blake Logan came into the game for Jupiter (11-27, 38-69) and retired the next two 'Tees to end the frame. He and Sean Donatello combined for 3.2 hitless and scoreless innings to seal the win for the Hammerheads. Jupiter scored early against Manatees starter Damien Magnifico. The Hammerheads had Avery Romero on third base with one out in the second inning and Cody Keefer at the plate. Brevard County pulled the infield in and Keefer hit a slow grounder to third. Macias fielded the ball, but his only play was to first base. Romero scored on the RBI ground out to put Jupiter ahead, 1-0. Sharif Othman added to the Hammerheads' lead in the fifth. After Magnifico (7-6, 3.90 ERA) gave up a one out walk to Noah Perio, Othman lifted a high fly ball over the right field wall to extend the Hammerheads' advantage to 3-0. Colin Moran made Brevard's deficit worse in the sixth. The left-handed hitter led off with a deep drive that cleared the yellow line on the right-center field wall. Romero added a run later in the inning when he ripped an RBI single to left that brought Juengel home and put Jupiter up, 5-0. Magnifico took his first loss since July 7. The righty gave up all five Jupiter runs over 5.1 innings. Magnifico surrendered six hits, walked two and did not strike out a batter. The Manatees are 2-1 in the first three games of this series against Jupiter and will go for the series win on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Jorge Lopez (8-6, 4.29 ERA) is slated to start for Brevard County against Scott Lyman (4-8, 3.06 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play
  7. Final: DSL Blue Jays 12, DSL Brewers 11 DSL Brewers Box Score The Brewers lost a wild one as they gave up ten runs in the top of the eighth then battled back with five runs in the bottom of the ninth, only to strand the tying run at second base as they fell 12-11. Yeraldy Martinez went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and four runs batted in for the Brewers. Nicol Valderrrey also homered and Raphachel Colatosti went 3-for-5. Kevin Martinez and Nicolas Pierre each added two hits with Martinez doubling twice and Pierre collecting a single and a double. Yosmer Leal started and went six innings, allowing just two runs. 8. Palm Beach 5, Brevard County 4 (Game One) Long balls subdue 'Tees in opener as Cards win, 5-4 Manatees leave 11 on base in second straight defeat By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/4/2/74264342/cuts/Cooper_4.15_640x360_5og27mjb_ex26yq1p.jpg Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper, seen here from a game earlier this year, drove in two runs in Brevard County's 5-4 loss to the Palm Beach Cardinals in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Courtesy of a pair of home runs the Palm Beach Cardinals took their second straight from the Brevard County Manatees, 5-4 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. With Palm Beach (24-11 second half, 60-44 overall) and Brevard (16-15, 52-45) deadlocked at four in the top of the fifth, Nick Martini stepped up the plate to lead off the frame against Manatees starter Austin Ross (7-4, 3.66 ERA). On a 2-2 pitch, Martini lofted a high fly ball to left field. Initially looking like a casual fly out, the ball began to carry towards the wall. Victor Roache chased it to the wall and made a leap to try and make the catch. However, the ball traveled over the wall and into the Cardinals' bullpen for a solo home run. The go-ahead jack was Martini's third of the year and it put Palm Beach in front for good, 5-4. This came immediately after Brevard County stormed back to even the game at four. Trailing 4-1 against Cardinals starter Nick Petree (5-3, 2.22), Roache began the frame with a four-pitch walk. Mike Garza followed with a double into left-center, which brought the tying run to the plate. Garrett Cooper, who had not recorded an RBI with Brevard since May 19, came through with a crushing blow. The first baseman hammered a shot over the head of Martini in center. The ball took one hop and went over the wall for a ground-rule double. Both Roache and Garza score to trim the lead to 4-3. That put an end to Petree's night. The Cardinals ninth round pick from last year went a season-low 3.2 innings. He surrendered four runs - three earned - on a season-high-tying seven hits. After a pair of outs prevented Cooper from advancing, Orlando Arcia delivered the game-tying knock. With two strikes against him, Arcia slapped a line drive single into left. Anthony Garcia's throw in was up the third base line and Cooper slid in safely to knot the score at four. The Manatees grabbed the initial lead in the first on a run-scoring single by Michael Reed, but the Cardinals came back in the next half inning. David Popkins, Garcia and Mason Katz ignited the rally with three straight singles to begin the frame. Ross then forced Jimmy Bosco to pop one up to short. The infield fly rule was called for out number one. The next hitter, Gerwuins Velzaco, stepped in and quickly fell behind, 0-2. However, Velzaco stood strong and cranked the next pitch to deep left-center field. Roache and Tyrone Taylor followed it back, but all they could do was watch, as it sailed over the wall for a grand slam. The blast was Velzaco's first of the year and it gave Palm Beach its first lead, 4-1. Ross battled through six innings, but took his third straight loss and fourth of the season. The former LSU Tiger allowed a season-high five runs and nine hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out six in defeat. Brevard received strong offensive performances from the top of their lineup. Arcia, Taylor and Reed combined to record seven of the team's 10 hits and two of the four runs batted in. With the loss, the Manatees have dropped a season-worst seven of their last eight entering the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard County Bottom of the 4th Victor Roache walks. Mike Garza doubles (14) on a fly ball to left fielder Anthony Garcia. Victor Roache to 3rd. Palm Beach 2, Brevard County 4 (Game Two) Four-run fourth leads 'Tees past Cards in night cap, 4-2 Alfredo Rodriguez's three-run double is the difference in Brevard win By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/3/2/86664932/cuts/Rodriguez_Alfredo_covse9o4_pdzxn0ki.JPG Alfredo Rodriguez, pictured here from a game earlier this year, delivered the game-winning, three-run double in the bottom of the fifth to lead the Brevard County Manatees over the Palm Beach Cardinals, 4-2 in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Alfredo Rodriguez provided the game-winning, two-run double in the Brevard County Manatees 4-2 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. With Palm Beach starter Silfredo Garcia (6-2, 3.64 ERA) beginning to tire, the Manatees (17-15 second half, 53-45 overall) sparked their rally with a pair of singles from Nathan Orf and Orlando Arcia. Palm Beach (24-12, 60-45) manager then called on left-hander Danny Miranda, Jr. to help the Cards escape the jam. The first batter he faced, Tyrone Taylor, attempted to sacrifice the runners over. He bunted the ball down the third base line, however, Miranda and third baseman Ildemaro Vargas did not communicate who was to take charge. Vargas went to cover third, while Miranda allowed the ball roll behind him. Everyone was safe to load the bases. Miranda would buckle down. With the infield in, Michael Reed hit a ground ball at shortstop Greg Miclat. The former Virginia Cavalier threw home to get the force on Orf for out number one. Mike Garza did not fare any better. He hit a tapper to third and much like Miclat, Vargas threw to the plate to force Arcia for the second out. The following batter, Rodriguez, wasted no time in making sure the rally was a success. On the first pitch, he sliced a ball past a diving Vargas and down the left field line. All the runners were able to score without a throw, as Rodriguez ended up at second with a three-run, stand-up double to put Brevard in front, 3-2. The late-inning, go-ahead base hit was Rodriguez's third in less than a month. The Oak Hill, Va. native had the go-ahead two-run double in the 12th inning at Clearwater on June 28. Then on July 12 against Charlotte, Rodriguez drove in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice in a walk-off, 2-1 victory. After a first pitch ball, Parker Berberet continued the onslaught with a line drive single to right. Rodriguez raced home to score and push the Brevard advantage to 4-2. However, the Manatees may not have had the opportunity to come back if not for a stellar defensive play in the fourth. With two out, Mason Katz smashed a high fly ball to deep left. Jose Sermo tracked the ball back to wall and at the last second made a leap to try and snag it. The Puerto Rico native stretched his body into the Cardinals' bullpen and crashed down to warning track with the ball in his mitt. Katz tipped his helmet to Sermo, as the entire Manatees' defense, including Manny the Manatee, waited to congratulate him in front of the dugout. The home-run saving grab was crucial, as it kept the 'Tees behind by only two. After a shaky couple of weeks, the Brevard County bullpen shut the door on any potential comeback. Chad Pierce, who entered in the fifth, threw two spotless innings of relief to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed just one baserunner and struck out one in the victory. The closer, Mark Williams, regained his control and dominated the Cardinals in the seventh. He retired Palm Beach in order in the final frame to record his ninth save of the season. That puts him in a tie with Tanner Poppe, who is now at Double-A Huntsville, for the team-lead in saves. Palm Beach grabbed the game's initial lead in the top of the first off Manatees spot starter Mike Strong (1-1, 2.54). After Martini led off the game with a single to right and advanced to second a sacrifice bunt, Bruce Caldwell clobbered a ball to deep center. The ball cleared the wall, just to the right of dead center, for a two-run shot. Caldwell's ninth blast of the year gave the Cards the advantage, 2-0. Despite the rocky beginning, Strong has a very effective night. The left-hander allowed just those two runs on three hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out three in the no decision. Once again, it was Taylor who led the offense for the Manatees. The center fielder extended his hit streak to six games with his three-for-three performance. In the four game series with Palm Beach, Taylor hit an absurd .600 (9-for-15) with three runs scored, a home run and six RBI. Including today's doubleheader, Taylor is now hitting .354 in the second half of the season. Brevard will look carry the momentum into tomorrow's series opener against the Jupiter Hammerheads (10-25, 37-67). First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Florida State League-leader in ERA, Tyler Wagner (9-4, 1.61), will get the call for the Manatees against fellow righty Jake Esch (4-4, 4.88). 12. Final: Palm Beach 13, Brevard County 7 Brevard downed by Cards after two rain delays By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - In a game that began roughly an hour after the scheduled start time due to rain and was delayed again in the second inning, the Brevard County Manatees lost to the Palm Beach Cardinals, 13-7 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. Once the game got underway, the Cardinals (23-11 second half, 59-44 overall) jumped on Manatees starting pitcher Jorge Lopez. Palm Beach began the contest with a five-run first inning that included three extra-base hits and a single. David Popkins delivered the first blow of the onslaught with the lone single of the opening frame. His knock scored Nick Martini with the game's first run and Anthony Garcia followed with an RBI double to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. Mason Katz then capped the banner inning for Palm Beach with a three-run home run to put the visitors up by five runs before the 'Tees could grab their bats. Brevard (16-14, 52-44) pushed a couple of runs across in the first to soften the blow. Nathan Orf worked his way on with a leadoff walk and Tyrone Taylor brought him home two batters later with an RBI single. Taylor then stole second and moved to third when Michael Reed reached on an error. That set up a run-scoring single by Cameron Garfield to cut the Manatees' deficit to 5-2. Rain halted play with one out and nobody on in the top of the second, but the Cardinals picked up where they left off when the ballgame resumed. Martini worked a walk and Bruce Caldwell kept the inning alive two batters later with a two-out single. The next three Cardinals hitters then proceeded to drive in runs. Luke Voit and David Popkins roped back-to-back RBI doubles and Anthony Garcia added a tally with a single. That rally put the Manatees down by seven runs after just 1.5 innings, 9-2. The home side got one run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Taylor, but Palm Beach got right back at it with the bats in the third and fourth against the Manatees' bullpen. Martin Viramontes relieved Lopez in the third and Greg Miclat greeted him by slamming a leadoff triple. Miclat later scored on a wild pitch and Voit hit a solo homer in the fourth to give Palm Beach an 11-3 lead. Brevard County showed some life in the seventh inning and took a shot at coming back. After the Cards scratched across an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the inning, the 'Tees climbed back within five runs in the bottom half. Cardinals starter Joe Cuda worked into the seventh with a 12-3 lead, but the 'Tees promptly struck with four straight hits. Orf began the rally by rolling an infield single toward third and Orlando Arcia came up right behind him with a ground rule double. After Arcia's drive cleared the left field wall on a bounce to put a pair in scoring position, Taylor cleared that wall on a fly. Taylor's three-run homer was his sixth of the season and cut Brevard's deficit to 12-6. Reed continued the Manatees' rally right after the big fly. He ripped a double and moved to third on a ground out. With only one out in the inning, Roache lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Reed. The four-run inning for Brevard County trimmed Palm Beach's lead to 12-7. The Cardinals, however, put the game away in the ninth. In the top half, Martini stroked a two-out double against reliever Mark Williams. Martini moved up to third on a wild pitch and Ildemaro Vargas notched the Cardinals' final tally with an RBI single that brought Martini home. Brevard County then went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth against righty reliever Chris Perry. Cuda (7-7, 6.20 ERA) was not spectacular, but his outing was good enough to earn a victory on this night. The starter gave up seven runs on 11 hits over 6.2 innings. Cuda struck out four and walked one in the winning performance. Lopez (8-6, 4.29 ERA) took the loss after he gave up a career-high nine runs over the first two innings. The Manatees' starter only lasted those two frames, but tied a season-high with eight hits allowed. Lopez struck out two and walked two in the defeat. Despite the loss, Taylor turned in one of his best offensive days of the season. Taylor reached a new season-high and tied a career-high with five RBI in a 3-for-5 night that included his first home run since June 27. Orf was also solid at the dish. He reached base safely in each of his five plate appearances with three singles, a walk and his Florida State League-leading 17th hit-by-pitch of the season. Orf also scored a pair of runs. Between the delay at the start of the ballgame and the rain interruption in the second inning, the Manatees and Cardinals officially waited through 1:46 minutes of delays. The length of Friday's delays totaled just one our less than the time it took to play the ballgame, as the final time of game clocked in at 2:46. Brevard County will try to rebound from the loss on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium, as the 'Tees again host the Cardinals. Austin Ross (7-3, 3.38 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Manatees against Nick Petree (5-3, 1.93 ERA). First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score The starting and stopping couldn't have helped Jorge Lopez tonight, but it's been an ugly month of July for him. 14. Final: Palm Beach 4, Brevard County 7 Macias, Roache go deep to lead 'Tees over Cards, 7-4 Manatees record 15 hits as they end their five-game skid By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/4/8/73681448/cuts/Macias_4.15_640x360_4ysvakxg_qrwn498x.jpg Manatees third baseman Brandon Macias went 3-for-4 with a home run in Brevard County's 7-4 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Thanks to a pair of home runs from Brandon Macias and Victor Roache, the Brevard County Manatees ended their five-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. After Palm Beach (22-11 second half, 58-44 overall) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Ildemaro Vargas, Brevard County's (16-13, 52-43) bats exploded in the third inning, as the 'Tees grabbed a lead they would never relinquish. Macias started the frame with a single to left, but then the Manatees picked up base-hits in wacky ways. On a 2-2 pitch, Nathan Orf hit a chopper to the left-side of the infield. The third baseman Vargas ranged to his left and the shortstop Greg Miclat raced in, but neither communicated who was going to take charge. The ball snuck between them and Orf was safe at first with an infield single. The next batter, Orlando Arcia, continued the bizarre half-inning, as he swung at the first pitch. The ball rolled on to the dirt in front of home plate, but Palm Beach catcher Gerwuins Velazco thought the ball was popped in the air. By the time Cardinals pitcher Tyrell Jenkins (4-2, 3.50 ERA) fielded the ball there was no play to be made. Arcia was on with the second straight infield single to load the bases. Tyrone Taylor would drove home Macias with a sacrifice fly to left to tie the score at one. Michael Reed and Cameron Garfield followed with a pair of singles to drive home Orf and Arcia to give the Manatees the lead, 3-1. With Garfield's base-hit, the Manatees had nine straight batters produce a productive at-bat. Brevard County recorded eight singles and a sacrifice fly, consecutively. The Manatees tallied three straight singles in the second, but Roache was thrown out trying to score from second base to end the inning. Mason Katz ripped an RBI triple to right-center to cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom of the frame the 'Tees began to crank the long ball. Mike Garza started the inning with a single to center and with one out Macias dug in against Jenkins. On a 0-1 pitch, Macias unloaded on a ball and drove out to deep left-center field. It looked like a casual fly ball, but the wind carried the ball well over the 404-foot sign. The two-run home run was Macias' first of the year and it pushed the Manatees' lead to 5-2. In the fifth, it was Roache's turn. After the first two batters of the inning grounded out to third, Roache crushed a ball to deep left-center, as well. The wind helped carry the ball some, but Roache's power did most of the work. The ball landed out by the flagpoles for a solo shot, Roache's team-leading 12th home run of the year, to push the Manatees' lead to 6-2. However, the Cardinals would rally back. In the top of the eighth, after reliever Chad Pierce struck out the first two batters of the inning looking, Palm Beach began its strike. Anthony Garcia walked on four pitches and then Mason Katz delivered again. The former LSU Tiger, who finished the night a home run shy of the cycle, flipped a double down the left field line. Garcia scored easily from first to trim the lead to 6-3. The following hitter, Miclat, kept the attack going. On a payoff pitch, he roped a single in front of Reed in right field. Katz scored from second and the Cardinals were within two, 6-4. After Brevard pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Nathan Orf, the Cardinals made the Manatee faithful sweat again. Mike Strong came out of the bullpen to close out the ballgame and retired the first two batters on groundouts. Bruce Caldwell then slapped a single to left and Luke Voit followed with a line drive single to center. With the tying run at the plate, David Popkins hit a slow roller to short. Arcia was able to field and throw on to first to get the out and end the game. Despite an abbreviated start, Damien Magnifico (7-5, 3.67) tallied his seventh win of the season. The Florida State League All-Star allowed two runs - one earned - on six hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out four on 84 pitches. Jenkins took his second loss of the season for Palm Beach. The former first round pick battled through his worst start of the year. In five innings, Jenkins allowed a season-high six runs and 12 hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. The Manatees bats thrived again tonight, as the team tallied 15 base-hits. Four players - Arcia, Roache, Garza and Macias - had multi-hit performances. Macias tied a season-high with three hits and fell a triple short of the cycle. Including tonight, the former Kansas Jayhawk has now driven in seven runs in his last six contests. Brevard County will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow, as first pitch against Palm Beach is slated for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Jorge Lopez (8-5, 3.54) will get the start for the Manatees against fellow righty Joe Cuda (6-7, 5.94). Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play

  18. Final: Brevard County 2, Fort Myers 9 'Tees swept by Miracle, bitten by long ball By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees could not keep the ball in the ballpark against the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday. Fort Myers (22-9 second half, 63-37 overall) hit three home runs, including a pair by Dalton Hicks, and powered its way to a 9-2 win at Hammond Stadium to cap a four-game sweep. Miracle first baseman Dalton Hicks picked up where he left off a night before. After the left-handed hitter tied the game with a two-run shot in the 11th on Tuesday, Hicks began Wednesday with another two-run homer in the opening frame. The clean-up batter drove a pitch from starter Hobbs Johnson over the right field wall to put Fort Myers on top, 2-0. Two innings later, the biggest power bat in the Florida State League helped the Miracle extend their lead. With two outs in the third, Adam Brett Walker hit a long solo home run over the left field wall. The shot was Walker's league-leading 21st of the season and tied him with Brock Peterson (2006) for the Miracle's single-season home run record. On top of all of that, the long ball gave Fort Myers a 3-0 edge. Things got worse for Brevard County (15-13, 51-43) in the bottom of the fifth. Johnson (9-7, 3.13 ERA) was still on the hill and with one out, the lefty induced a ground ball to second off the bat of Nate Roberts. Nathan Orf, however, could not handle the ball and Roberts reached on an error. Johnson then walked Hicks and Walker, back-to-back, to load the bases and the Manatees called on Scott Lieser out of the bullpen. Travis Harrison was the first man who Lieser faced and the right-handed batter dribbled a slow ground ball toward third base. Greg Hopkins barehanded the ball, but could not throw to first in time to get Harrison. Roberts scores from third on the infield single to put Fort Myers a 4-0 lead. The Manatees fell into an even deeper hole after Harrison's "excuse me" RBI. Lieser walked Niko Goodrum and hit Tyler Grimes, both with the bases loaded. The reliever struck out the next two men, but the damage was done. All six runs scored to that point were charged to Johnson, five of them were earned and Fort Myers was well ahead, 6-0. Brevard got a pair of runs back in the top of the sixth. Orf led off with a single against Miracle starting pitcher Brett Lee. With one out, Tyrone Taylor singled and Victor Roache came up with a pair on. The designated hitter lined a single to left field and Orf came home with Brevard's first run. Brandon Macias later delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Taylor and the Manatees left the sixth with a 6-2 deficit. Those Manatees runs did not turn into any sort of momentum for the visitors, as Fort Myers struck back for three more runs between the sixth and eighth innings. Twice, those runs came courtesy of Hicks. The first baseman hit a broken-bat single to add a run in the sixth and he added his second home run of the day in the eighth with a solo shot. In between those tallies, Grimes slammed an RBI double in the seventh. The late offense gave Fort Myers a 9-2 lead and the Miracle bullpen shut the door. Right-hander B.J. Hermsen pitched the final two innings and shut the 'Tees down in order both times. His work secured the win for Lee (7-2, 1.92 ERA). The left-handed starter pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Lee also struck out five Manatees hitters and did not issue a walk. Johnson took the loss for Brevard County. He lasted only 4.1 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits. Johnson struck out four, walked four and gave up two home runs. The Manatees have now lost five straight after being swept in the four game series at Hammond Stadium. Brevard County, however, will return home for an eight-game homestand, beginning on Thursday against the Palm Beach Cardinals. Damien Magnifico (6-5, 3.70 ERA) is due to start the opener to the four-game series. He will be opposed by Joe Cuda (6-7, 5.94 ERA). First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Hobbs Johnson struggled in the early am start. He allowed six runs, five earned on six hits. The Manatees lost in 12 innings, however, 7-6. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had the game in hand twice, but ended up losing in 12 innings to the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium, 7-6. Heading into the bottom of the eighth, Brevard County (15-12 second half, 51-42 overall) held a 4-0 lead, thanks to seven shutout innings by Tyler Wagner. After Wagner exited, however, Fort Myers (21-9, 62-37) pounced. Tyler Grimes led off the inning with a double off of reliever Martin Viramontes. With two outs, Jorge Polanco slammed a double of his own to cut the Manatees' lead to 4-1. Fort Myers threatened to add more, but Mark Williams came in to stop the bleeding. After he walked Dalton Hicks to load the bases, Williams induced an inning-ending double play to preserve the three-run advantage. In the ninth, however, the Miracle got to Williams. After a leadoff walk to Mike Gonzales and a one-out free pass to Niko Goodrum, Grimes ripped an RBI double to cut the Miracle's deficit to two runs. Williams exited after the double and Stephen Peterson entered in an attempt to close out the game. Aderling Mejia, however, cut further into Brevard's lead with an RBI ground out that scored Goodrum and pulled Fort Myers within one run. Grimes moved up to third on the ground out and Peterson walked Polanco to bring Travis Harrison to the plate. Harrison smoked a single up the middle to score Grimes and tie the game. The ballgame went to extra innings and the 'Tees got what, at the time, looked like a game-deciding hit. After Peterson left the winning run on third in the bottom of the 10th, Brevard rallied with two outs in the top of the 11th. Alfredo Rodriguez doubled off of reliever Madison Boer and Greg Hopkins worked a walk. Brandon Macias came up with the outfielders playing in to cut off the run at the plate, but the number nine hitter drove a ball over the head of Grimes in center. Rodriguez and Hopkins both scored to give the Manatees a 6-4 lead. Macias, however, was thrown out on a 9-4-5 relay, as he tried to stretch his double into a triple. For the second time in the game, Brevard had a chance to beat Fort Myers. Left-hander Trevor Seidenberger came in to pitch the bottom of the 11th, but promptly gave up a walk to Mejia. After Seidenberger struck out Polanco, Harrison hit a broken-bat grounder to second and Mejia made a cerebral baserunning play that kept the ballgame alive. Nathan Orf fielded Harrison's grounder at second and went to tag Mejia. The runner, however, stopped and backpedalled toward first. Orf eventually tagged Mejia, but had no time to complete the double play at first, as Harrison reached safely. If the 'Tees had turned two there, the ballgame would have been over. Mejia's baserunning allowed Hicks to come to the plate as the tying run with two outs in the 11th. The left-handed hitter came through with a towering, two-run home run over the right field wall that tied the game again, 6-6. Fort Myers finally put the Manatees away in the 12th. Seidenberger gave up a leadoff double to Gonzales and Stuart Turner sacrificed the winning run over to third base with a bunt. The Manatees brought the infield in for Goodrum, but Seidenberger worked around the switch-hitter and eventually put him on with a walk. With runners on the corners and one out, Fort Myers called on a surprise pinch runner. Sunday's starting pitcher, Tim Shibuya, entered the game to pinch run for Gonzales with Grimes coming to the plate. After Goodrum moved to second on defensive indifference, Grimes took the ballgame into his own hands. The 'Tees still had the infield in and Grimes pulled a line drive. Macias dove, but the ball went past his outstretched glove and into left field. Shibuya came home with the game-winning run and the 'Tees fell for the fourth time in a row. Left-hander Steven Gruver picked up the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 12th. Gruver (2-5, 3.05 ERA) allowed one hit and walked the batter, but left the potential go-ahead run on second base to preserve the tie score. Seidenberger took his first Florida State League loss. The lefty allowed three runs, the two-run homer by Hicks that tied the game and the walk-off single by Grimes, over 1.1 innings. Seidenberger (0-1) surrendered three hits, walked two men and struck out a pair. Lost in the heartbreaking defeat was the tremendous pitching performance of Wagner. Brevard County's starter pitched seven scoreless innings and only allowed four hits. Wagner struck out four and walked two. He also maintained the best ERA in the FSL at 1.61. Since June 9, the starter has allowed just two runs over 41.1 innings for a remarkable 0.44 ERA. Wagner, however, saw his five-start winning streak snapped after the 'Tees gave up the lead in the ninth. Brevard County will try to salvage a game from the Miracle on Wednesday morning. The 'Tees have lost all six meetings against Fort Myers and will get one more shot at the first-half south division champs with an 11:35 a.m. first pitch. Hobbs Johnson (9-6, 2.80 ERA) will get the ball for Brevard against Brett Lee (6-2, 1.85 ERA). 21. Very well done Brad (and staff)! The list certainly appears considerably deeper than those from the pre-season. A lot of young guys on that list that I am looking forward to watch develop. As far as the name goes, maybe a BF.net naming contest? My submissions are "Miller Park Future Forty" or "Brewers Back Forty". Sorry if those are a lame start. Thanks guys. And I agree, the system seems much deeper than it did just a few months ago.
  22. Final: Brevard County 2, Fort Myers 4 'Tees lead early, fall late at Fort Myers By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/5/2/81158952/cuts/Orf_6.8_640x360_527urpew_r4bxxl0u.jpg Manatees second baseman Nathan Orf, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 in Brevard County's 4-2 loss to the Fort Myers Miracle on Monday night at Hammond Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) FORT MYERS, Fla. - A couple of quick, fourth-inning runs by the Brevard County Manatees were enough to take an early lead, but not enough to beat the Fort Myers Miracle. The Miracle rebounded to defeat the 'Tees at Hammond Stadium on Monday night, 4-2. Brevard County (15-11 second half, 51-41 overall) grabbed the first runs of the game against Fort Myers (20-9, 61-37) starter Matt Tomshaw. After Tomshaw issued a one-out walk to Cameron Garfield in the fourth, Victor Roache roped a single to put a pair on. Mike Garza then came through with a double to score Garfield and put the 'Tees on top. Garrett Cooper followed suit with a sacrifice fly to bring Roache home and push the lead to 2-0. That was all the Manatees could muster against Tomshaw, however, and in the bottom of the fourth, Fort Myers' bats came alive. Manatees starter Austin Ross recorded the first two outs of the inning, but Dalton Hicks smacked a single to keep the inning alive. Adam Brett Walker came up next and the Florida State League leader in homers and RBI delivered. He drove a double off the center field wall to score Hicks and cut the Miracle deficit to one run. Mike Gonzales then peppered the left field wall with a two-bagger to tie the score at 2-2. Fort Myers rallied again in the sixth. Now at the end of his line, Ross (7-3, 3.38 ERA) sandwiched a single between a pair of walks to begin the inning. The last free pass to Walker knocked Ross out of the game and the 'Tees called on lefty Mike Strong with the bases loaded, nobody out and the score knotted. Strong fared well, but could not keep the Miracle from taking the lead. Gonzales broke his bat on a grounder to third base and Greg Hopkins threw to second for the out, but the Manatees could not roll the double play. The RBI fielder's choice allowed Travis Harrison to score the go-ahead run and Stuart Turner added to the lead with an RBI single to right field. Strong did not allow another run that inning, but the Miracle still held a 4-2 advantage. Brevard had two big chances to come back in the seventh and ninth, but could not quite get there. After Tomshaw (9-2, 2.87 ERA) got the first two 'Tees out in the sixth, the starter issued back-to-back walks to Nathan Orf and Michael Reed. The left-hander then got Tyrone Taylor to ground to third, but Aderling Mejia bobbled the ball to load the bases and keep the inning alive. Tomshaw's night was over after the error, but reliever Brian Gilbert came in and struck out Hopkins looking to end the inning and preserve the two-run lead for Fort Myers. Once again, the Manatees had a shot at a comeback in the ninth. Brandon Macias worked a leadoff walk and Orf singled to put the tying run on base. Gilbert, however, induced a 6-4-3 double play and a subsequent ground out to end the ballgame. Gilbert picked up his fifth save of the season in 2.1 innings of work. The right-hander struck out four, issued one walk and allowed just one hit. The reliever's work sealed Tomshaw's ninth victory of the season. Tomshaw went 6.2 innings and allowed both the Manatees' runs on five hits. Brevard struck out three times against the lefty and walked three times. Ross took the loss in his first official start since July 6. The righty surrendered four runs on six hits through five innings of work. Ross also issued a season-high four walks and struck out two. The 'Tees have now lost each of their last three games and are 0-5 against the Miracle. Brevard County faces Fort Myers again on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tyler Wagner (9-4, 1.71 ERA) is set to pitch for the Manatees against Ethan Mildren (1-0, 6.75 ERA). 25. Final: Brevard County 4, Lakeland 7 Brevard falls in series opener at Fort Myers, 7-4 By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://brevardcounty.manatees.milb.com/assets/images/9/0/0/73877900/cuts/Michael_Reed_FredBenavidez_640x360_nkv6hoep_hd5yp0qi.jpg Brevard County outfielder Michael Reed was named the Florida State League Player of the Week for the period of April 28-May 4. In six games that week, he hit .571 (12-for-21) with two home runs, five runs batted in, scored nine runs and had a .700 on-base percentage. (Fred Benavidez) FORT MYERS, Fla. - Tim Shibuya pitched a gem and Niko Goodrum delivered late at the dish to drive the Fort Myers Miracle past the Brevard County Manatees, 7-4 on Sunday at Hammond Stadium. Typically a ground ball pitcher, Shibuya (7-3, 3.13 ERA) was true to form. He held the Manatees (15-10 second half, 51-40 overall) to just one run over seven innings with the help of four double plays. The starter also struck out five men, including the first four men he faced, allowed seven hits and walked one. Shibuya's shot at a victory was in jeopardy late, but his shortstop and nine-hitter picked him up. With Fort Myers (19-9, 60-37) clinging to a 3-1 edge in the sixth, Goodrum came up with two outs and two on. Manatees starter Jorge Lopez had his pitch-count running up over 100 in his first game back since pitching in the MLB All-Star Futures Game on Sunday and Goodrum was likely the last man he would face. Goodrum had two strikes against him, but turned on a pitch from Lopez (8-5, 3.54 ERA) and drilled a high fly ball over the right field wall. The home run ended the night for Lopez and pushed the Miracle's lead to 6-1. The Manatees nearly stormed back again in the eighth when Michael Reed smashed a three-run home run over the left field wall against reliever B.J. Hermsen that made the score 6-4, Fort Myers. The next half-inning, however, Goodrum was there again to bail the Miracle out. With Stuart Turner on first, he ripped a single to right that scored the runner. That knock gave Fort Myers a 7-4 lead and helped secure the win for Shibuya. Before Goodrum's late-game surge, Fort Myers started early with the bats. Adam Brett Walker opened the scoring when he smoked a two run double down the left field line in the third. Manatees left fielder Victor Roache had trouble with the ball and threw wild to the plate, which allowed Walker to move to third base. Mike Gonzales then pushed the Miracle's lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to right. The 'Tees responded in the fourth. Nathan Orf smacked a double to lead things off and Reed singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. After Shibuya induced a fly out, Mike Garza put Brevard on the board with a single to right that scored Orf. The Manatees had a big chance to cut further into the lead in the fourth, but could not capitalize. With runners on first and second, Roache hit a ground ball back to the mound. Shibuya fielded the ball and turned to throw to first base. Both Miracle middle infielders, Goodrum and Jorge Polanco, arrived at the bag and Shibuya's throw kicked off Goodrum's glove. Goodrum was charged with the error and the 'Tees had the bases loaded for Alfredo Rodriguez. Shibuya remained composed, though, and produced another ground ball to the rubber. The pitcher threw home for the first out and Turner threw to first to complete the inning-ending double play. It was Shibuya's second double play of the game, after he had manufactured one in the third, and it kept Fort Myers ahead, 3-1. Brevard County had another shot at Shibuya in the top of the sixth, but the starter's third double play suppressed that threat. The Manatees had Orf on first following a leadoff single and Reed hit a ground ball to third. Aderling Mejia threw to Polanco to force out Orf, but the runner made a hard slide into the bag and Polanco's throw to first went wild. The ball bounced out of play and Reed moved up to second. After Taylor grounded a single, the Manatees had runners on the corners with one out. Garza came to the plate with the tying runs on, but hit into 4-3 twin-killing to get the Miracle out of the jam. The seventh inning brought another Manatees rally and yet another Shibuya double play. Roache ripped a double to start the frame and Rodriguez walked to put a pair on. Garrett Cooper, however, rolled a ground ball to shortstop and Goodrum turned two to end the inning and complete Shibuya's outing with the starter's fourth and final double play. Right-hander Todd Van Steensel came in for the ninth and completed the win to record his first Florida State League save. Van Steensel issued a one-out walk, but was able to seal the victory by inducing a fly out to center and a ground out to second to end the ballgame. Lopez took the loss for Brevard County. He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits. The starter struck out three and walked three in the losing effort. Orf was the hottest-hitting Manatee on the evening. He led Brevard with three hits in five trips to the plate. The second baseman singled twice, doubled and scored a pair of runs. Reed was the only other Manatee with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 with the three-run homer in the eighth and a single. Sunday's game marked the return to the Manatees lineup for Cooper. The first baseman had been transferred to Class-A Wisconsin in June and then went to the Rookie Arizona League for a spell before being sent back to Brevard County on Friday. Cooper went 1-for-4 in his first game back. The Manatees are 0-4 against Fort Myers, but get another crack at the Miracle on Monday night. First pitch at Hammond Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Austin Ross (7-2, 3.12 ERA) is the probable starter for Brevard County against lefty Matt Tomshaw (8-2, 2.88 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Perhaps I missed it, but I'm curious as to what the status of Nicky Delmonico is. He's no longer listed on the BC roster and his milb.com player page shows him on the temporary inactive list. He hadn't played in a game for the Manatees since July 7th, and you'd think if it was injury related he'd just go on the DL. Given his late start to the season for personal reasons, hopefully everything turns out alright for the 22-year-old Delmonico. Orlando Arcia was out of the lineup once again today as well. On a more positive note, it was nice to see Michael Reed muscle up for a big three run homer and Nathan Orf picked up a pair of singles and a double in five at bats. Brevard County Play-By-Play Reed's eighth inning blast Brevard County Top of the 8th Pitching Change: B. J. Hermsen replaces Tim Shibuya. Brandon Macias singles on a ground ball to left fielder Travis Harrison. Nathan Orf singles on a fly ball to left fielder Travis Harrison. Brandon Macias to 2nd. Michael Reed homers (3) on a fly ball to left center field. Brandon Macias scores. Nathan Orf scores. Tyrone Taylor flies out to center fielder Max Kepler.
