Final: Brevard County 2, Tampa 1 Bradley sparkles again in Manatees win 'Tees win fifth one-run game of 2014 with 2-1 victory over Tampa By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/5/0/73040450/cuts/Bradley_4.5_4_640x360_23yq9ltk_glj1uu0j.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Jed Bradley, seen here in a start from earlier this season, earned his third straight win on Wednesday night as the Manatees defeated the Tampa Yankees, 2-1 at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The southpaw went six innings and allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out five and did not issue a walk. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) TAMPA, Fla. - Led by another stellar performance by former first-round pick Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.80), the Brevard County Manatees were able to squeak out a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday night. The former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket and reigning FSL Pitcher of the Week surrendered just one run on five hits over six innings, struck out five and did not walk a batter. Reliever Tommy Toledo shut the door on Tampa, as he picked up his fourth save of the season. After a lead-off triple by Jake Cave in the bottom of the ninth and an infield single by shortstop Cito Culver, the Yankees had the tying and winning runs on base with no one out. The Manatees' leader in saves from 2013 proceeded to retire the heart of the Yankees lineup in order, as he struck out Eric Jagielo, Dante Bichette, Jr. and Peter O'Brien to close out the victory. After trailing throughout the series, Brevard County (11-7) rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh to give Bradley his third consecutive victory. Second baseman Yadiel Rivera led off the inning with a bunt single to third - one of his three hits of the night - and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Michael Garza. On a 1-0 pitch, third baseman Brandon Macias came through with the go-ahead base knock against reliever Dietrich Enns. The former Kansas Jayhawk singled to right field to score Rivera and put the Manatees in front 2-1. The Yankees (10-8) took the initial lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Culver started the rally with a one-out single to right and Jagielo pushed him to third with a single of his own. Bichette, Jr. then hit a soft grounder to short and Orlando Arcia's only play was to get the force out at second base as Culver came across to give Tampa the one-run advantage. Brevard County struck back immediately by tying the game in the top of the fifth. Rivera led off with a single to left and on the very next pitch, Garza was drilled with a fastball from Yankees starter Rafael De Paula (1-1, 2.33) to put two runners on. After a Macias ground out, designated hitter Nathan Orf walked to load the bases. A wild pitch from De Paula allowed Rivera to scamper home from third and tie the game at one. That was the only blip for the Yankees prospect. The right-hander allowed just that one run on two base-hits, both singles, over five innings. De Paula also struck out six and walked two in his second straight no-decision. The Manatees and Yankees will battle again in the rubber game of the series on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Brevard County will send right-hander Jorge Lopez (1-1, 4.50) to the mound against Tampa's left-hander Dan Camarena (0-2, 4.50). Brevard County Box Score It was all about the pitching once again. Another solid outing from Jed Bradley. Six innings, one run, five strikeouts. Mike Strong and Tommy Toledo picked up another three scoreless innings out of the Manatees bullpen. Nice night from Yadiel Rivera as well, going 3-for-4 and scoring both runs for Brevard. Other than that, not a whole lot to talk about offensively. Nathan Orf moved up to the leadoff spot and reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks. Amazingly, Orf was not hit by a pitch. Cameron Garfield and Tyrone Taylor each had a stolen base. Garfield threw out two runners attempting to steal and picked another off second base. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees did a nice job of manufacturing the winning run following a leadoff single by Rivera to start the 7th. Brevard County Top of the 7th Pitching Change: Dietrich Enns replaces Evan Rutckyj. Yadiel Rivera singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Eric Jagielo. Mike Garza out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Dietrich Enns to first baseman Reymond Nunez. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd. Brandon Macias singles on a ground ball to right fielder Zach Wilson. Yadiel Rivera scores. Brandon Macias advances to 2nd, on a missed catch error by catcher Peter O'Brien. Nathan Orf reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Cito Culver to third baseman Eric Jagielo. Brandon Macias out at 3rd. Orlando Arcia grounds out, pitcher Dietrich Enns to first baseman Reymond Nunez. Mike Strong walked Dante Bichette but struck out the side in his one inning of work Tampa Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Michael Strong replaces Jed Bradley. Eric Jagielo strikes out swinging. Dante Bichette walks. Peter O'Brien strikes out swinging. Dante Bichette steals (1) 2nd base. Angelo Gumbs strikes out swinging.

Final: Brevard County 1, Tampa 2 Brevard's 11 hits not enough in 2-1 loss to Yanks 'Tees go 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leave nine on base By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees TAMPA, Fla. - Despite 11 hits - with five of them being doubles - the Brevard County Manatees could only push one run across in a tough, 2-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees (10-7) scored their only two runs right out of the gate against Manatees (10-7) starter Damien Magnifico (1-1, 3.43). With two out and one on in the first inning, Dante Bichette, Jr. lined a single to center. Peter O'Brien then drew a walk after a 12-pitch battle, which featured six foul balls, bringing Angelo Gumbs to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Gumbs grounded a single through the middle that scored Cito Culver and Bichette, Jr., to give the Yankees the only runs they would need. That would be the only real trouble for Magnifico on the night. The right-hander worked through his 38-pitch first inning to shutout Tampa in his final four frames. Magnifico allowed just three hits the rest of the way and tied a season-high with three strikeouts. Brevard County (10-7) put together multiple rallies, but could not come through with runners on base. The best chance for the Manatees came in the top of the first as back-to-back singles by catcher Cameron Garfield and left fielder Victor Roache, followed by a walk to right fielder Michael Reed, loaded the bases. First baseman Garrett Cooper would ground out to second to end the frame as Yankees starter Eric Wooten worked his way out of trouble. The three runners left on base would be the first of nine runners stranded by the Manatees. Brevard County's only run against the left-hander would come in the fifth inning. After a double and a stolen base by shortstop Orlando Arcia, Roache would ground a ball off the glove of the Yankee starter for an infield single to make the score 2-1. That would be the lone run surrendered by Wooten (2-0, 2.11) as he was battled through six innings of work. The Colorado native scattered eight hits, while walking one and striking out three. The Manatees would make one last charge against left-handed reliever James Pazos in the ninth. After a lead off, ground-rule double by Nathan Orf and an infield single by Yadiel Rivera, Brevard had runners at the corners and nobody out. However, Pazos proceeded to strike out Michael Garza. Rivera was then caught stealing second base after a Tyrone Taylor strike out to end the game. The Manatees will battle the Yankees again on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series. Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Jed Bradley (2-1, 4.70) will take the mound for the Manatees against the Yankees' Rafael De Paula (1-1, 2.51). Brevard County Box Score The Manatees picked up 11 hits, but were only able to score one run. Nathan Orf had a pair of doubles and was hit by a pitch in his four plate appearances. His on base percentage is up to .471 on the year. Orlando Arcia was back at shortstop tonight and went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Victor Roache also had a 2-for-4 night. Michael Reed doubled and walked in four trips to the plate. Damien Magnifico pitched fairly well after the first inning, giving up just the two runs in five innings. Stephen Peterson was outstanding out of the bullpen to keep the game close. He gave up just one hit and struck out four. Garrett Cooper left the game in the sixth inning following a collision at first the previous inning. He stayed in the game following a visit from the trainer, but was lifted before his next at bat, replaced by Brandon Macias who went to third base with Mike Garza moving over to first. Brevard County Play-By-Play First and third with nobody out, but the Manatees couldn't push the tying run across. Brevard County Top of the 9th Pitching Change: James Pazos replaces Phil Wetherell. Nathan Orf doubles (3) on a fly ball to right fielder Zach Wilson. Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jake Cave. Nathan Orf to 3rd. Mike Garza strikes out swinging. Tyrone Taylor strikes out swinging and Yadiel Rivera caught stealing 2nd, catcher Peter O'Brien to second baseman Angelo Gumbs.

Final: Dunedin 1, Brevard County 3 Garfield's big hit leads 'Tees to 3-1 victory Brevard snaps Dunedin's seven-game win streak By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/3/4/72710334/cuts/Wagner_4.19_2_640x360_idf7r1cn_v3mxt0rw.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Wagner allowed four hits and struck out six in six scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to 1.17, but did not factor in the decision as Brevard County defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays, 3-1 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - After being shutout in back-to-back games on Friday evening, the Brevard County Manatees ended the Dunedin Blue Jays seven-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. With the score dead locked at 1-1 going to the bottom of the eighth, the Manatees' (10-6) rally began with a single to center by third baseman Michael Garza. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor reached base after being hit by a pitch and then both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch by left-handed reliever and former Manatee Efrain Nieves. Orlando Arcia proceeded to ground out bringing up catcher Cameron Garfield with one away. It looked like the Manatees had taken the lead as the California native grounded a ball down the third base line. However, home plate umpire Brennan Miller ruled the ball foul. Two pitches later though, Garfield smacked a ball in between the hole at third and shortstop that scored both Garza and Taylor to put Brevard County up for good. Tanner Poppe then came on in the top of the ninth to try and close out the victory. After a lead-off single by catcher Derrick Chung was erased on a double play, the right-hander struck out Jorge Flores looking to seal the victory and earned fifth save of the season. The Manatees grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as Taylor, who entered the day as the Minor League leader in doubles, laced a pitch from Dunedin (13-3) starter Matt Boyd over the fence and onto the berm in left field for his first home run of the season. The shot from the center fielder was a rarity as it was the first run surrendered by the Oregon State product in 19.2 innings this season. The home run was the only mistake made by the left-hander as he allowed just that one run on three hits. The Blue Jays sixth-round pick in 2013 also struck out nine and walked three over six innings of work. Boyd went toe-to-toe with Manatees starter Tyler Wagner who was stellar in his own right. Tied with Boyd for the Florida State League in wins entering the night, the former Utah Ute left after six scoreless innings as he allowed just four hits and struck out six, while not surrendering a walk. However, Wagner did not pick up the victory as Dunedin rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh against Austin Ross. After three straight singles by Gustavo Pierre, Jorge Flores and Christian Lopes with one out, Dwight Smith, Jr. hit a high chop towards second base. Smith's speed prevented the Manatees from turning an inning-ending double play as Pierre came across to score on the fielder's choice to tie the game at one. Ross went on to throw a scoreless eighth inning and struck out two as he went on to pick up his first win of the season. The Manatees will have an off-day tomorrow before hitting the road to open a three-game series at George M. Steinbrenner Field against the Tampa Yankees (9-7) on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Brevard County will turn to right-hander Damien Magnifico, who picked up his first victory of the season after a strong start in the Jackie Robinson Celebration Game last Tuesday. Brevard County Box Score Tyrone Taylor's home run was the first of the season by a Manatee not named Victor Roache. Taylor also had a single and was hit by a pitch. Mike Garza also had a two hit night, going 2-for-3. As mentioned above, Garfield's two run single came after what could/should have been a double down the third base line. The Manatees managed just five hits again tonight, but this offense it too talented and it's only a matter of time before the hits start coming in bunches. Michael Reed, despite his .163 average, drew two more walks and carries an on base percentage of .379. Tyler Wagner spun six scoreless innings, striking out six, but got a no decision. He's now given up just three earned runs through 23 innings this season. Brevard County Play-By-Play Cameron Garfield's clutch eighth inning single Brevard County Bottom of the 8th Mike Garza singles on a ground ball to center fielder Dalton Pompey. Tyrone Taylor hit by pitch. Mike Garza to 2nd. With Orlando Arcia batting, wild pitch by Efrain Nieves, Mike Garza to 3rd. Tyrone Taylor to 2nd. Orlando Arcia grounds out to first baseman K. C. Hobson. Cameron Garfield singles on a ground ball to left fielder Dwight Smith. Mike Garza scores. Tyrone Taylor scores. Pitching Change: Danny Barnes replaces Efrain Nieves. Victor Roache called out on strikes. Michael Reed flies out to right fielder Marcus Knecht.

Final: Dunedin 1, Brevard County 0 (Game Two) Brevard's bats silenced in 1-0 loss to Dunedin Manatees drop to four games back of Blue Jays in standings By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/0/6/72600106/cuts/Pierce_4.18_640x360_25ci8wm5_zznpcodz.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Chad Pierce struck out five and allowed three hits in 4.1 scoreless innings before being knocked out of the game, due to a rain delay on Friday night against the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees ended up falling 1-0 to Dunedin. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - After a 40 minute rain delay, the Brevard County Manatees' bats were quieted once again in the second game of Friday night's doubleheader as they fell 1-0 in a seven-inning game to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium. The lone run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning as a one out, two-base throwing error by Manatees (9-6) catcher Parker Berberet allowed the go-ahead run to get into scoring position. With two outs, Emilio Guerrero laced a base hit into left field off Manatees reliever Tommy Toledo to drive in right fielder Marcus Knecht to give Dunedin (13-2) a 1-0 advantage. The Manatees rallied in the sixth and seventh innings, by getting a runner into scoring position each inning, but were unable to come up with the big hit. In the sixth, Michael Reed reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Dunedin reliever Blake McFarland. After a fly out by Victor Roache advanced Reed to third with two outs, Garrett Cooper struck out looking to end the frame. Second baseman Alfredo Rodriguez started the rally in bottom of the seventh with a broken bat single to left. Third baseman Brandon Macias proceeded to sacrifice pinch-runner Orlando Arcia to second to give Brevard County two chances to drive in the tying run. However, Dunedin closer Arik Sikula slammed the door with a slew of nasty sliders in the dirt to strike out both Berberet and Jose Sermo swinging, for his Florida State League-leading fifth save of the year. For both starting pitcher, their nights ended prematurely as driving rain brought the game to a halt for roughly 40 minutes with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Dunedin's Jesse Hernandez and Brevard County's Chad Pierce were strong in their time on the bump, allowing just three hits apiece. Pierce, who was on the mound when the delay began, was particularly impressive. The recently activated right-hander struck out five and did not walk a batter in 4.1 innings. The Manatees will look to end the Blue Jays seven-game win streak when the two meet in the series finale on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. The teams will send their two best pitchers, statistically, to mound as right-hander Tyler Wagner (3-0, 1.59) will take the hill for the Manatees against Blue Jays left-hander Matt Boyd (3-0, 0.00). Brevard County Box Score Another tough loss in game two. Chad Pierce was cruising in to the fifth inning and then the rains hit again. Pierce exited after 4.1 innings, allowing just three hits. Tommy Toledo pitched well out of the pen and didn't deserve a loss after his 2.2 innings of work. Dunedin managed only two hits off of him but he was charged with the loss after Berberet's throwing error. Brevard managed just four hits in the second game and all were singles. Yadiel Rivera, Garrett Cooper, Alfredo Rodriguez and Jose Sermo each had a hit for the 'Tees. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees ran themselves out of a potential run-scoring opportunity in the third Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Jose Sermo singles on a ground ball to shortstop Emilio Guerrero. Tyrone Taylor out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Jesse Hernandez to first baseman K. C. Hobson. Jose Sermo to 2nd. Yadiel Rivera singles on a fly ball to left fielder Dwight Smith. Jose Sermo to 3rd. Yadiel Rivera out at 2nd on the throw, left fielder Dwight Smith to third baseman Gustavo Pierre to second baseman Jorge Flores to first baseman K. C. Hobson. Michael Reed strikes out swinging.

Final: Dunedin 4, Brevard County 1 (Game One) 'Tees muster one hit in game one loss Brevard blanked 4-0 by Blue Jays in resumption of suspended game By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/0/8/72598208/cuts/Johnson_4.18_1_640x360_1o4qbjo6_2i8vsv7m.jpg Brevard County pitcher Hobbs Johnson struck out seven in five innings of work, but allowed two unearned runs and was saddled with the loss as the Manatees fell 4-0 to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. The game was the completion of Thursday's suspended contest. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - In a game that was finished roughly 24 hours after it was suspended, the Dunedin Blue Jays ended the Brevard County Manatees three-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory on Friday evening at Space Coast Stadium. Dunedin starting pitcher Daniel Norris was originally slated to start the second game of the series, but was pushed up a game due to the rain out and he continued where he left off against the Manatees (9-5) last weekend. After throwing six innings of shutout baseball in a Blue Jays (11-2) victory last Saturday, Norris continued his early season brilliance by holding Brevard County to just one hit over four innings of work. The lone hit, which was originally ruled an error, came on a single by catcher Cameron Garfield in the fourth. The lefty had control issues at times as he walked two batters, but battled through and struck out five over the four frames on 78 pitches. Hobbs Johnson - who took over for the game's original starter Jorge Lopez after the delay - would throw two scoreless innings, before Dunedin jumped in front in the fourth inning. With one out, Dalton Pompey reached on an error by Johnson. Pompey proceeded to steal second and then advanced to third on a ground out by K.C. Hobson. After a walk to Kevin Patterson, right fielder Matt Newman lined a double to left, that dropped just in front of a diving Victor Roache, to drive in two and give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Dunedin would tack on the game's final two runs in the top half of the seventh inning. After Martin Viramontes came in to relieve Johnson, Emilio Guerrero doubled to start the frame. Gustavo Pierre stepped to the plate, after a pop out to second, and lined a home run over the left-center field fence, his first of the year, to give Dunedin a 4-0 advantage. Kramer Champlin would take over for Norris in the fifth inning and dominate the game's final five frames. Besides two walks, the Blue Jays' reliever did not allow a base hit while on the mound and struck out two batters in his first victory of the season. Johnson would take the loss for Brevard County, as he allowed three hits and two unearned runs while striking out seven. Brevard County Box Score Not much to say about this one. Tough way for Dunedin to lose out on a no-hitter. Hobbs Johnson pitched really well despite taking the loss. He went five innings and struck out seven. He allowed just three hits. Michael Reed stole his 10th base but then got cut down for the first time this season trying to take third as well. Cameron Garfield had the lone hit for the 'Tees. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees best chance to score came with runners on first and second with only one out in the second but things went south quickly Brevard County Bottom of the 2nd Victor Roache flies out to right fielder Matt Newman. Michael Reed walks. With Garrett Cooper batting, Michael Reed steals (10) 2nd base. Garrett Cooper walks. Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging. With Nathan Orf batting, Michael Reed caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Derrick Chung to pitcher Daniel Norris to third baseman Gustavo Pierre to second baseman Christian Lopes to pitcher Daniel Norris.

Link Report for Thurs. 4/17 -- Super Suter!
bkrause2 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Brevard's game against Dunedin was suspended in the bottom of the first inning after Jorge Lopez pitched a scoreless top half of the inning. It's a shame the rain didn't start just a little bit sooner as Lopez was only able to get one inning of work. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow night. First game will be nine innings and pick up in the bottom of the first. Second game will be seven innings. -
Final: Lakeland 0, Brevard County 1 Manatees blank Flying Tigers to sweep series Bradley throws six innings of two-hit ball in 1-0 win By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/6/0/72341260/cuts/Bradley_4.16_2_640x360_4s8sgcgk_qby5yvvn.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Jed Bradley threw six shutout innings and allowed just two hits as Brevard County blanked the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 1-0 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium to complete a three-game sweep of Lakeland. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Six shutout innings from starting pitcher Jed Bradley helped the Brevard County Manatees to a 1-0 win on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium and complete a three-game sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Bradley (2-1, 4.70) allowed just two hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk en route to his second win of the season. The southpaw did not allow a hit until his second time through the Lakeland (7-6) order and only allowed two men to reach scoring position against him. On the opposite side, Lakeland starter Jake Thompson (2-1, 0.48) took a tough-luck loss as he pitched seven innings and only gave up one run on four hits. The Manatees (9-4) scored the only run of the contest in the sixth inning. Tyrone Taylor led off the frame with a double over the head of left fielder Chad Wright. Taylor's Minor League-leading 10th double of the season opened the door for Orlando Arcia, who singled to score Taylor. Brevard's bullpen took the game the rest of the way for Bradley. Left-hander Mike Strong pitched a scoreless seventh and righty Tanner Poppe pitched the final two frames to record his fourth save. Poppe struck out four and only allowed one hit to close out the Manatees' first series sweep of the year. The 'Tees begin a three-game series against the first-place Dunedin Blue Jays (11-2) on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Jorge Lopez (1-1, 4.91) is expected to start for Brevard against Dunedin's Jesse Hernandez (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score It's exciting to see a start like this out of Jed Bradley. Six innings, two hits and five strikeouts. Hopefully Bradley can continue to build on the success he's had in his last two outings. Mike Strong and Tanner Poppe continued the excellent effort from the Manatees pitching staff with three shutout relief innings. Poppe picked up his fourth save as he and Tommy Toledo continue to alternate turns in the closer's role. Tyrone Taylor with another double now has had ten of his fourteen hits this season go for doubles. Orlando Arcia, Cameron Garfield and Alfredo Rodriguez had the other three hits for Brevard. Brevard County Play-By-Play The only run of the game came following Tyrone Taylor's double in the sixth Brevard County Bottom of the 6th Brandon Macias called out on strikes. Final: Lakeland 1, Brevard County 7 Brevard tops Lakeland 7-1 at Historic Dodgertown 'Tees score five in first in inaugural Jackie Robinson Celebration Game By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/5/0/72210050/cuts/Taylor_4.15_640x360_hnffi94d_nzx2z83o.jpg Manatees center fielder Tyrone Taylor hit his Minor League-leading ninth double of the season on Tuesday night as Brevard County defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 7-1 in the inaugural Jackie Robinson Celebration Game at Holman Stadium at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach. VERO BEACH, Fla. - In front of a packed house of 4,019 fans, the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 7-1 in the inaugural Jackie Robinson Celebration Game at Holman Stadium at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach on Tuesday night. Brevard County (8-4) got off to a hot start in the first inning against Lakeland's (7-5) Jordan John. After the 'Tees surrendered a run in the top of the inning, they came back with five of their own. The rally started when leadoff man Tyrone Taylor hit his Minor League Baseball-leading ninth double down the left field line. Taylor moved to third on a groundout by Orlando Arcia and then came home on an RBI groundout by Cameron Garfield that tied the score at 1-1. John then hit Victor Roache with two outs and followed that with back-to-back walks to Michael Reed and Garrett Cooper to load the bases. Yadiel Rivera forced in a run with his own base on balls and the Manatees took a 2-1 lead. Nathan Orf kept the first-inning rally alive in unconventional fashion. With the bases still loaded, Orf dropped a bunt down the third base line. The Flying Tigers' defense could not make a play on the bunt, as Orf reached safely at first and Reed scampered home. A two-run single by Brandon Macias capped the Manatees' outburst in the opening frame. Cooper and Rivera came home on the Macias base hit and Brevard left the first inning with a 5-1 lead. John was chased from the game after just 0.2 innings and eventually took the loss. Manatees' starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (1-0, 2.89) took control of the game after he was handed a four-run cushion. The right-hander did not allow another run and only gave up two more hits before exiting the game with one out in the sixth inning. After Magnifico's night was over, Brevard County added two more runs to pad its lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the 'Tees had the bases loaded with nobody out. Macias hit a dribbler up the third base line and Lakeland pitcher Brennan Smith bounced off the mound to make a play. Smith barehanded and flipped home, but his flip was wide of catcher Austin Green and two runs scored to put Brevard ahead by six. Austin Ross and Stephen Peterson took the 'Tees the rest of the way on the hill. Ross pitched 2.2 scoreless innings before Peterson handled the ninth. The southpaw worked a one-two-three ninth inning to secure the win. Lakeland and Brevard County return to Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night to wrap up their series. The Manatees will send southpaw Jed Bradley (1-1, 7.71) to the hill to try to nail down the sweep. Bradley will be opposed by right-hander Jake Thompson (2-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Damien Magnifico got his first win of the season after giving up just one run in 5.1 innings. 'Tees turn triple play in 8-5 win over Lakeland Roache homers, Wagner earns third victory By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - It may only be April, but right fielder Michael Reed turned in the play of the year for Brevard County Manatees. Reed made a sliding catch that resulted in a triple play, as the 'Tees defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 8-5 at Space Coast Stadium on Monday night. The Manatees' defensive anomaly came in the top of the fifth inning. Lakeland had runners on first and second with nobody out after James Robbins doubled and Austin Green walked. Jeff Holm came up next and hit a fly ball to deep right-center field. Both runners took off, thinking that the ball would fall for extra bases. Reed, however, sprinted over and made a sliding catch on the track. Both runners retreated, but Reed's throw was already in shortstop Orlando Arcia's glove. Arcia stepped on second base to retire Robbins and tagged Green to complete the triple play. It was the first triple play turned by Brevard County since 2003. Brevard's triple play upstaged what was already a strong offensive performance for the Manatees. The 'Tees took a 1-0 lead in the first with some good fortune, as a throwing error allowed Tyrone Taylor to score. After Holm homered for Lakeland to tie the game in the top of the third, Victor Roache answered with a solo shot of his own. A bases-loaded walk later in the inning gave Brevard County a 3-1 lead. The Manatees slowly added to their lead in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Cameron Garfield drove in Arcia with an RBI double in the sixth and then Brandon Macias's seventh-inning, two-out single scored Garrett Cooper in the seventh. Brevard scored another pair in the eighth on a two-run single by Cooper. Brevard County starting pitcher Tyler Wagner had a quality start as he earned the win. He had his longest outing of the year and fell one out shy of making it through seven innings. Wagner only allowed three runs - two earned - on eight hits, struck out three and walked two in the winning effort. A pair of right-handed relievers finished the job for Wagner. Chad Pierce finished the seventh inning and pitched into the ninth before running into trouble. Lakeland trailed 8-3 entering the ninth inning, but scored a pair and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. Tommy Toledo ended the threat quickly when he came in from the bullpen. He struck out Tyler Hanover to end the game and nail down his third save of 2014. The 'Tees and Flying Tigers play the middle game of their series on Tuesday night at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach. The contest will mark the inaugural Jackie Robinson Celebration Game at Holman Stadium, the Dodgers' spring training home from 1948-2008. Right-hander Damien Magnifico is expected to pitch for Brevard County against his former University of Oklahoma teammate, southpaw Jordan John. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Tyler Wagner allowed eight hits in 6 2/3 innings, but still turned in a solid outing, giving up just two earned runs. Victor Roache hit his second home run of the season as part of a 2-for-5 night. Brandon Macias went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Garrett Cooper and Michael Reed each went 1-for-3 and drew a pair of walks. Reed added an outfield assist on the previously mentioned triple play, and stole two more bases. He's 9-for-9 now in stolen base attempts. Nathan Orf is only batting just .154 but reached base three more times, walking twice and adding his daily hit-by-pitch. Orlando Arcia, back at shortstop tonight, had three errors, with two coming on one play in the ninth inning. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees picked up three runs in the third inning Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Cameron Garfield lines out to shortstop David Gonzalez. Reed, Manatees turn rare triple play No. 15 Brewers prospect makes leaping grab to start historic play By Ashley Marshall / MiLB.com http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/4/4/72090544/cuts/reed_5pofliex_5b7446w6.jpg Michael Reed hit .286 with 23 doubles, 13 triples and 26 steals in 118 games last year. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Brewers prospect Michael Reed may not have the size and strength of a defensive end, but he certainly has the speed of a running back and the agility of a wide receiver. And even though the right fielder didn't follow in his father Benton's footsteps to play professional football, the genes he inherited sure are coming in handy on the baseball diamond. Reed made a highlight-reel catch at full sprint -- he called it a "running, leaping, over-the-head catch" -- before assisting on a triple play in the Class A Advanced Brevard County Manatees' 8-5 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Monday. "It was a pretty cool experience," Reed said. "I have never been part of a triple play before so it was pretty neat to be a part of it. "My dad being an NFL player, he was very quick and he ran a very fast pro shuttle. I've always been quick off the start and I get to full speed quickly. When you make that first step on your read, you're trying to get up to full speed as fast as possible to take that good angle toward the ball. My genes probably had a lot to do with that play." Lakeland first baseman James Robbins led off the fifth inning with a double to center field and catcher Austin Green followed with a walk. Left fielder Jeff Holm then hit a deep fly ball to the right-center field gap. Reed, the No. 15 Brewers prospect, chased it down and almost overran the ball as it began tailing back toward the first-base line. He reached back to make the grab and then planted his right hand on the warning track to brace himself before coming to a sliding stop. The 21-year-old then fired the ball to shortstop Orlando Arcia, ranked fourth on the Brewers, who stepped on second base to double off Robbins for the second out and then slapped the tag on Green -- who had already rounded second -- to complete the triple play. "Right after I threw the ball in, I looked at my hand," said Reed, whose father was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1986 and started with the New England Patriots the following year. "I tore it up pretty badly on the track and it was bleeding. I didn't really know what happened after that, I just heard the crowd screaming so I knew something good happened. "I knew I had a shot at a double play, but then [center fielder] Tyrone Taylor came running over and said, 'You just got a triple play, man.'" It was the first triple play in the Florida State League this year and the first since Bradenton accomplished the feat in the ninth inning of a 5-3 win over Charlotte last Aug. 11. It also gave Reed, selected by the Brewers in the fifth round of the 2011 Draft, his third outfield assist in 10 games. He made nine outfield assists -- including one double play -- in 107 Midwest League games in 2013. "Defense is definitely one of the key parts of my game," the 190-pound right-hander said. "I'm always working on my defense and I have to keep that part of my game for the rest of my career. I hope it will help me get to the big leagues." Manatees starter Tyler Wagner (3-0) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 6 2/3 innings. Left fielder Victor Roache hit his second homer of the year and first baseman Garrett Cooper reached base three times, plated two runs and scored twice. Lakeland's Edgar De La Rosa (0-3) surrendered four runs -- three earned -- over three frames. He yielded three hits and four walks.

Final: Brevard County 2, Dunedin 6 Dunedin powers past Brevard in Sunday matinee By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees DUNEDIN, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson allowed two-run homers in back-to-back innings to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon, en route to a 6-2 loss at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Brevard County (6-4) entered the third inning with a 2-1 lead, but that is when the long ball bit the 'Tees. K.C. Hobson drilled a two-run shot over the right field wall to put Dunedin (8-2) on top. The following inning, Kevin Patterson duplicated Hobson's feat. The left-handed hitter sent a Johnson (1-1, 4.91) offering over the right-center field wall to give the Jays a 5-2 advantage. In all, Johnson allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings of work, while walking two and striking out three. Martin Viramontes relieved Johnson and went the rest of the way as he threw three scoreless innings. The 'Tees scored early, but their bats cooled off quickly. Parker Berberet opened the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly to score Yadiel Rivera. The next inning, Victor Roache singled through the left side to bring Orlando Arcia home. Dunedin's bullpen kept the Manatees quiet in the latter stages of the game. Justin Jackson earned his first win of the season in relief. Jackson pitched 3.2 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit, while walking two men and striking out four. Chad Girodo surrendered no runs and no hits over the final three frames to pick up his first save of 2014. With the win, the Blue Jays took two out of three games from Brevard County. The Manatees now head home for a six-game homestand, beginning on Monday night against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (7-3). Brevard County is scheduled to throw Tyler Wagner (2-0, 0.87) against Lakeland's Edgar De La Rosa (0-2, 2.00). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County Box Score Today's outing didn't go quite as well for Hobbs Johnson as his first start. They mentioned on the radio broadast that he was hanging his curveball and that came back to bite him, as he allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings. Martin Viramontes had some success out of the pen, tossing three shutout innings, but the offense never got going for the Manatees. A double by Yadiel Rivera and singles by Victor Roache and Nathan Orf accounted for the only hits. Orf reached base in all four plate appearances. He walked twice, had an infield single, and was of course, hit by a pitch. The 'Tees did manage to draw six walks. Two each by Orf, Cameron Garfield and Orlando Arcia. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard's best chance for a big inning was quickly snuffed out by former infielder - turned outfielder - turned pitcher Justin Jackson. Brevard County Top of the 3rd Tyrone Taylor grounds out, third baseman Emilio Guerrero to first baseman K. C. Hobson. Orlando Arcia walks. Cameron Garfield walks. Orlando Arcia to 2nd. Victor Roache singles on a ground ball to left fielder Marcus Knecht. Orlando Arcia scores. Cameron Garfield to 2nd. Pitching Change: Justin Jackson replaces Kramer Champlin. Final: Brevard County 2, Dunedin 4 'Tees comeback falls short in 4-2 loss By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees DUNEDIN, Fla. - Early offense and strong pitching proved enough for the Dunedin Blue Jays, as they defeated the Brevard County Manatees 4-2 on Saturday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Dunedin's three-run, third inning burst off 'Tees (6-3) starter Jorge Lopez (1-1, 4.91) happened in a hurry. Marcus Knecht led off with a single and then moved up to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Matt Newman put runners on first and second, Emilio Guerrero doubled home Knecht to open the scoring. Guerrero's double moved Newman up to third and the Jays loaded the bases with a walk by Gustavo Pierre. With Michael Reeves batting, another wild pitch skidded to the backstop and allowed Newman to score the Jays' second run. Reeves then hit a run-scoring groundout to give Dunedin (7-2) a 3-0 lead. Those three runs in third were all that Lopez would allow as he went six innings and struck out five. On the other side, the Manatees could not solve Daniel Norris through his six innings of work. The left-hander kept the 'Tees off the scoreboard and only allowed four hits. Brevard County advanced runners into scoring position three times against Norris, but left a total of two runners stranded on third and two on second. Norris' biggest jam was in the fourth inning. The 'Tees had runners on second and third with one out, but the southpaw struck out a pair of Brevard County hitters to end the inning. Norris finished the game with six strikeouts in the winning effort. After Norris left the ballgame, the Manatees' bats began to come alive. In the top of the seventh, Michael Reed led off with a double and Yadiel Rivera drilled an RBI triple to put the 'Tees on the scoreboard. Rivera later scored on an RBI groundout by Garrett Cooper, who also doubled twice. The comeback was spoiled, however, when Dunedin added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Brevard County brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Mike Garza hit a two-out single, but Arik Sikula induced a game-ending groundout to secure his third save of the season. The 'Tees and Jays have now split the first two games of this three-game series, with the rubber game set for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Brevard County is scheduled to throw southpaw Hobbs Johnson (1-0, 0.00), while the Jays are expected to start Kramer Champlin. Brevard County Box Score Aside from a rough second inning, it was a pretty good outing for Jorge Lopez. He wound up going six and allowing three runs while striking out five. Orlando Arcia, back at second base for this series, was on base three times with a couple of singles and a walk. Garrett Cooper had another two-hit night, picking up a pair of doubles. Michael Reed also had a double. Listening to the radio call it sounded like Reed's shot just missed leaving the yard. Cameron Garfield was on base twice with a single and a hit-by-pitch. Victor Roache had the Manatees lone stolen base of the night. Final: Brevard County 5, Dunedin 2 Brevard cools Dunedin's bats in 5-2 win By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees DUNEDIN, Fla. - Starting pitcher Jed Bradley allowed one run in five innings of work as the Brevard County Manatees shut down the hottest hitting team in the Florida State League in a 5-2 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Friday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Bradley (1-1, 7.71 ERA) went five innings and allowed just four hits, while striking out six. Of his six K's, four were against Dwight Smith, Jr., who entered the game with a .469 average and no strikeouts through 32 at-bats. Very seldom did Bradley have to work out of trouble. In the game's opening frame, Bradley struck out Smith, and then surrendered a double to Dalton Pompey. The Manatees' (6-2) southpaw settled down, however, as he induced a ground ball back to the mound for the second out. Pompey stole third with two outs, but Bradley escaped the inning with a fly out to left field. Dunedin's (6-2) only run off of Bradley came in the third. With two outs and runners on first and second, Matt Newman came through with a single to score Christian Lopes. Bradley exited the game with a 4-1 lead, thanks to some early offense from the 'Tees. Brevard County struck twice in the first inning off a throwing error and a wild pitch. Then, in the second inning, Mike Garza hit a run-scoring triple and Tyrone Taylor delivered an RBI single. Jacob Barnes took the baton from Bradley in the sixth. He struck out three men over a pair of innings and gave up just two hits. One of those hits, however, was a solo home run by Emilio Guerrero. The homer represented the first run that Barnes had given up in 2014. Following Barnes, Tanner Poppe closed the door in the eighth and ninth. Poppe entered the game with a 5-2 lead after Cameron Garfield's RBI single in the top of the eighth scored Taylor. The closer then came in and surrendered one hit and struck out a pair to earn his third save of the season. Taylor again had a big day at the plate. He led the Manatees with a 3-for-4 night that included an RBI and two runs scored. The center fielder also notched his MiLB-leading eighth double of the season. First pitch for the middle game of the three-game series is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The 'Tees are expected to throw right-hander Jorge Lopez (1-0, 5.40) against the lefty Daniel Norris for Dunedin. Brevard County Box Score What else can you say about the start that Tyrone Taylor has had to his season. 3-for-4 tonight with another double and a stolen base. Garrett Cooper also chipped in with a pair of singles. He's had multi-hit games in three of his last four now. Mike Garza was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple. Yadiel Rivera singled and stole a base. Jed Bradley fared much better tonight than in his first outing. Five innings and just a single run allowed for Bradley. He struck out six. Jacob Barnes gave up a home run in his two innings of work, but otherwise pitched well again. Tanner Poppe worked the final two innings without giving up a run to notch his third save. Final: Brevard County 5, Lakeland 6 Tough breaks doom 'Tees in Lakeland finale Brevard unable to complete sweep as they fall 6-5 in ninth By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees LAKELAND, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees narrowly missed out on a sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers, but it was not for lack of trying. After a starting pitcher Damien Magnifico battled for five innings and a strong relief outing by lefty Stephen Peterson, the 'Tees fell to Lakeland in walk-off fashion on Thursday night, 6-5 at Joker Marchant Stadium. The teams entered the bottom of the ninth knotted at 5-5, with Peterson beginning his fourth inning of relief work. Chad Wright led off with a walk and then a broken bat flair off the bat of Dixon Machado found its way into left field. That moved Wright up to third and the 'Tees (5-2) elected to intentionally walk Jeff McVaney to load the bases with nobody out. Brevard went to the bullpen to try to save the game with Mike Strong. With Lance Durham coming to the plate, the Manatees brought the infield in. Durham, however, shot a ground ball passed first baseman Garrett Cooper to score Wright from third with the game-winning run. Lakeland (4-3) had tied the game in the sixth inning. In Peterson's first inning on the hill, the Tigers loaded the bases on a broken bat single and a pair of well-placed bunts. That opened the door for Wright, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Austin Green and evened the score at 5-5. Prior to the sixth, the 'Tees and Tigers exchanged big offensive innings. Lakeland's explosion came in the bottom of the first. The Flying Tigers scored four runs on three hits, as they received RBI singles from Durham and Green, a RBI ground out by Connor Harrell and a run-scoring double by McVaney. To his credit, Magnifico bounced back from the rocky first. The starter did not allow a run through his final four innings of work and only surrendered two more hits. After a five-run third inning by Brevard County, Magnifico left the game with the lead. The Manatees manufactured their offensive third inning with station-to-station baseball. Cooper and catcher Parker Berberet led off with singles and then third baseman Brandon Macias walked to load the bases. That brought up center fielder Tyrone Taylor who delivered a single that scored two runs in a roundabout way. Taylor's single easily scored Cooper from third, but Berberet was about to stop at third when the throw came in from center field. Macias, however, was rounding second and heading for third. With the trail runner stuck between second and third, Berberet broke for home and scored with no throw from the cut-off man. Later in the frame, the 'Tees scored three more runs to tie the game and eventually take the lead. After an RBI single by second baseman Orlando Arcia, right fielder Michael Reed beat out a would-be double play ball that allowed Taylor to cross the plate and even the score. Reed then stole second base, which brought up left fielder Victor Roache with a chance to give Brevard County its first lead. Roache did just that, as he delivered a run-scoring single up the middle. He was quickly retired, however, when the throw from center was cut off on its way home by first baseman James Robbins, who threw to second baseman Brandon Loy. Loy had come over to cover first base and tagged Roache out rounding the bag to end the inning. The 'Tees did not score after the third inning, which allowed the Tigers to come back for the win. Lakeland's Guido Knudson earned the win in relief. He struck out four and held Brevard scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings. Peterson took the loss for the Manatees. He allowed just two runs on four hits, over four innings in relief. The Manatees continue their road trip as they begin a three-game series on Friday night against the Dunedin Blue Jays (6-1). Brevard is expected to throw lefty Jed Bradley (0-1, 14.54) against right-hander Jesse Hernandez in the series opener, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Brevard County Box Score The Manatees came up with seven hits on the night, but none went for extra bases. Garrett Cooper led the way, going 2-for-4. Tyrone Taylor singled, drew a walk and stole his first base of the season. Michael Reed swiped two more and upped his FSL leading total to seven. Damien Magnifico struggled in his first inning, but settled down nicely after that, managing to get through five innings. Stephen Peterson was the tough luck loser, as mentioned in the game story. Final: Brevard County 4, Lakeland 1 'Tees pitching shuts down Lakeland again in 4-1 win Brevard pounds out 11 hits en route to third straight victory By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees LAKELAND, Fla. - The trio of Tyler Wagner, Austin Ross and Tommy Toledo surrendered just one run, four hits and struck out a season-high 11 men, as the Brevard County Manatees won their third straight game, 4-1 on Wednesday night over the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium. Wagner (2-0, 0.87 ERA) set the tone early by striking out four of the first five men he faced. The starter only allowed three hits and struck out six through his 5.1 innings of work before handing the ball over to Ross. The first man out of the Manatees' (5-1) bullpen entered with a man on and one out in the sixth, but quickly took care of the situation. Ross induced a ground ball back to the mound that he turned into a 1-6-3 double play to end the frame. That grounder was the beginning of a solid outing from Ross. He retired all seven batters he faced in consecutive fashion, including four strikeouts to send the 'Tees to the ninth with a three-run lead. Toledo took the ball in the ninth and effectively recorded his second save of the season. Though he allowed two runners to reach base with one out on a single and a walk, the closer polished off the final two batters to nail down the victory. For the second straight game, the Manatees wasted little time attacking the Flying Tigers' (3-3) pitching staff. Left fielder Victor Roache scored the 'Tees first run in the top of the second inning and he did it on the basepaths. With Roache on third, second baseman Yadiel Rivera took off from first base. When Lakeland catcher Drew Longley threw to second, Roache broke for home. Shortstop Dixon Machado cut off Longley's throw and fired home to try to get Roache, but he slid around the tag and touched home for the game's first run. Rivera scored later in the inning on a single by designated hitter Alfredo Rodriguez. Brevard County needed only one man to score an insurance run in the third inning. Shortstop Orlando Arcia laced a two-out offering from Flying Tigers starter Edgar De La Rosa to the left center field gap. Arcia easily had a double, but tried to stretch the hit into a triple. As Arcia slid into third base, the relay throw slipped under the glove of third baseman Tyler Hanover and rolled toward the third base dugout. That allowed Arcia to sprint home to give the 'Tees a 3-0 lead. The Manatees added an insurance run in the ninth on a single by third baseman Brandon Macias - one of his three hits on the night - before Toledo shut the door in the ninth. With the win, Brevard County improves to 5-1 for the second time in three years. Along with the three-hit night from Macias, Roache, Rivera and Tyrone Taylor had two hits each. For Taylor, his two hits were both doubles as he has already recorded seven two-baggers in just six games. The 'Tees remain atop the Florida State League North Division heading into Thursday's series finale against Lakeland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with righty Damien Magnifico (0-0, 1.59) due to pitch for Brevard County and southpaw Jordan John (1-0, 1.80) slated to toe the rubber for the Flying Tigers. Brevard County Box Score More strong pitching from the Manatees tonight. Starter Tyler Wagner went 5.1 innings, giving up just one run. He did walk four, but struck out six. Austin Ross went 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and k'd four Lakeland batters. Tommy Toledo gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth, but picked up his second save. Victor Roache had a single and a double in four at bats. He also stole a base. Brandon Macias went 3-for-4 out of the nine spot. As previously noted, Tyrone Taylor added a pair of doubles. Second baseman Yadiel Rivera was 2-for-4 and stole a base. Michael Reed also added his team leading fifth stolen base. Final: Brevard County 6, Lakeland 0 Johnson untouchable as 'Tees blank Lakeland By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees LAKELAND, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees left-handed pitcher Hobbs Johnson had everything going for him in his first professional start, as he shutout the Lakeland Flying Tigers over six innings and allowed just two hits en route to a 6-0 Brevard County win at Joker Marchant Stadium on Tuesday night. The southpaw did not allow a hit until the third inning; when Lakeland third baseman Tyler Hanover led off with a single. Johnson bounced back, however, and retired the next three men in order. Johnson only allowed two more base runners the rest of his outing and those runners did not stay on the basepaths for long. The 'Tees (4-1) starter erased both a fourth-inning walk and a fifth-inning single with inning-ending double plays. When his day was done, Johnson had faced the minimum number of hitters in five of his six innings pitched. When Johnson exited the game after the sixth inning, Martin Viramontes and Mike Strong shut down the Flying Tigers (3-2) the rest of the way. Their three scoreless innings combined helped Johnson earn his first professional decision. The lefty had made 11 relief appearances in 2013 at Rookie Helena and Class-A Wisconsin, but Tuesday night was his first decision as a pro. The Manatees' offense, of course, had to provide Johnson with some support and it wasted no time. With one out in the first inning, second baseman Orlando Arcia walked and catcher Cameron Garfield hit a screaming line drive that Lakeland shortstop Dixon Machado could not handle. That put runners on first and second for left fielder for Victor Roache and the clean-up hitter sent a towering fly ball over the left field wall. The Manatees' first home run of the season gave them a 3-0 advantage. Brevard County later added insurance and it came on a strange play in the fourth inning. The 'Tees had the bases loaded with first baseman Garrett Cooper on first, third baseman Mike Garza on second and center fielder Tyrone Taylor on first. Garfield came up and hit a single to left field. The single scored Cooper easily from third and Lakeland left fielder Jeff Holm threw home to try to get Garza who was also trying to score. Garza scored easily, as Holm's throw was cut off, but Garfield was rounding first and heading for second. Lakeland forced Garfield into a rundown, but Taylor, who had advanced to third during the play, broke for home. That turned the Tigers' attention toward home, but their throw to get Taylor was not in time and Garfield advanced to second. When the dust settled, the 'Tees had taken a 6-0 lead. Lakeland starting pitcher Yorfrank Lopez was charged with all six runs, though only two of them were earned. He was saddled with his first loss of the season after pitching 3.2 innings, in which he allowed five hits, walked three and struck out four. With the win, the Manatees now sit alone atop the Florida State League North Division. Meanwhile, the Flying Tigers dropped their first game since Opening Day. The 'Tees and Tigers face each other again on Wednesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The probable starting pitchers are right-hander Tyler Wagner (1-0, 0.00 ERA) for Brevard County and right-hander Edgar De La Rosa (0-1, 0.00) for Lakeland. Brevard County Box Score Victor Roache got on the board with his first home run of the year, a three-run shot in the first inning. He was also hit by a pitch and stole a base. Yadiel Rivera had a double for the only other Brevard extra-base hit. Michael Reed and Garrett Cooper each had a pair of hits. Orlando Arcia reached base three times with a single and two walks. He also made his first start of the season at shortstop with Rivera at second as the two rotate series. Hobbs Johnson was fantastic in his first pro start. He worked six scoreless innings and allowed just two hits. Johnson walked only one and struck out four. Martin Viramontes relieved Johnson and gave up just one hit in two innings. Lefty Michael Strong worked a scoreless ninth inning. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees didn't wait long to get on the board, thanks to Victor Roache's big blast. Brevard edges Daytona, 5-4 Taylor hits three doubles, as bullpen holds Cubs scoreless By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees won their third one-run game against Daytona Cubs on Monday night, thanks largely to a pair of right-handed relievers. Jacob Barnes and Tanner Poppe held the Cubs scoreless over the game's final four innings, giving the Manatees a 5-4 win at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Barnes pitched three perfect innings in relief of 'Tees (3-1) starter Jorge Lopez. The righty recorded three strikeouts over his three innings and bridged the gap to Poppe for the ninth. Poppe got into some trouble when Cubs (1-3) third baseman Jeimer Candelario drilled a one-out triple off the right field wall. With the tying run on third base, the Manatees were forced to pull the infield in, but their closer worked out of the jam. Poppe induced a weak pop-up to second baseman Orlando Arcia and struck out Cubs left fielder Rock Shoulders to nail down the save and give Brevard County the series win. Lopez earned the victory in his first start of 2014. He allowed four runs - two earned - in five innings of work. The right-hander also struck out four Cubs and walked two in the winning effort. While the pitching was strong at the back end for Brevard County, the Manatees had to battle back from the start. The 'Tees trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the third, but pieced together a rally with three doubles in four at-bats. Tyrone Taylor led off the frame with a two-bagger. Two batters later, Cameron Garfield doubled him home and Victor Roache followed suit with a run-scoring double of his own to pull the Manatees within one run. The Cubs added a run in the bottom half of the third to lead 4-2, but Brevard responded. With runners on first and second, Taylor pulled a hard ground ball down the left field line. Jose Sermo scored from second and Brandon Macias came all the way around from first to tie the score at 4-4. That score remained unchanged until the top of the fifth inning. The Manatees had Roache on second and Yadiel Rivera on first with two outs and Sermo coming to the plate. The switch-hitting designated hitter hit a high pop up to shortstop that looked like it would end the inning. Daytona shortstop Marco Hernandez camped under the ball, but appeared to lose track of it in the lights. The ball fell in shallow center field, allowing Roache to score what would eventually be the winning run. Cubs' relief pitcher Yao-Lin Wang was the tough-luck loser as he was on the mound when the error allowed the 'Tees to take the lead. That fifth inning was Wang's only frame of the game and he allowed just the one unearned run on one hit. Taylor, who delivered the game-tying hit for the 'Tees, was also the team's largest offensive contributor. Brevard County's center fielder hit three doubles as part of a 3-for-5 night that included two RBI and a run scored. The Manatees will remain on the road over the next six days. They begin the road trip with a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (3-1) on Tuesday night. Left-hander Hobbs Johnson is the probable starter for the 'Tees and RHP Yorfrank Lopez is scheduled to pitch for Lakeland. First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m. http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/7/8/71327878/cuts/Barnes_5.31.13_2_640x360_4tizysy1_xqe1glls.jpg Manatees pitcher Jacob Barnes, seen here in a 2013 file photo, threw three perfect innings of relief in Brevard County's 5-4 victory over the Daytona Cubs on Monday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 4 Taylor leads Manatees over Cubs The Manatees improved their record to 3-1 with a 5-4 victory over the Daytona Cubs on Monday night. The start of the ‘Tees game was delayed by 35 minutes due to a quick downpour that hit prior to game time, but center fielder Tyrone Taylor got things going immediately, pulling the first pitch he saw down the third base line for a double. Taylor would be stranded at second base, but it was the start of a big night for the young outfielder. After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning, Brevard answered right back with a pair of runs in the third. Taylor picked up his second double of the night, and moved to third on Orlando Arcia’s groundout. Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache followed with back-to-back doubles and the Sea Cows pulled to within 3-2. Daytona put up another run in their half of the third, but Brevard quickly tied things up in the fourth. Designated hitter Jose Sermo reached with a one out single, and Brandon Macias worked a walk. Taylor came through again, picking up his third double in as many at bats, and knocking in Sermo and Macias. The Manatees got a break in the fifth, when Cubs shortstop Marco Hernandez lost Jose Sermo’s two-out pop-up in the lights, allowing Roache - who had singled to lead off the inning – to score the go-ahead run. Jacob Barnes came on in relief of starter Jorge Lopez and worked three scoreless innings, retiring all nine Daytona batters he faced. Tanner Poppe came on to pitch the ninth, and worked around a one-out triple to earn his second save of the season. Brevard County starts a six game road trip on Tuesday as they travel to Lakeland at 6:30 pm EST. Hobbs Johnson will get the start for the Manatees. Brevard County Box Score Tyrone Taylor’s three doubles give him a FSL-leading five on the season. He also knocked in a pair of runs and cut down Dan Vogelbach trying to score from second base with nobody out in the second inning. Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache each had multi-hit games as well, with each picking up a double. Garfield gunned down one of two runners who attempted to steal on him, but did have a throwing error as well when he threw down to second on ball four and the ball went in to the outfield. Michael Reed singled, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, had a sacrifice bunt and stole two bases. Jorge Lopez was dancing around trouble most of the night, but allowed just two earned runs in his five innings. He struck out four and walked two. Jacob Barnes was the unsung hero of this one, working three perfect innings. It was a little surprising to see Tanner Poppe closing for the Manatees. I assumed that role was Tommy Toledo’s, but this was Poppe’s second save. He made it interesting again, but got the job done. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard County Top of the 3rd Tyrone Taylor doubles (4) on a ground ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Orlando Arcia grounds out to first baseman Dan Vogelbach. Tyrone Taylor to 3rd. Cameron Garfield doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Tyrone Taylor scores. Victor Roache doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Final: Daytona 13, Brevard County 2 'Tees trounced by Cubs, 13-2 By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Not many Florida State League bats would have been able to touch Daytona Cubs' starting pitcher Tayler Scott on Saturday night. The right-hander held the Brevard County Manatees hitless through 6.1 innings and finished with a two-hit performance over seven innings, as the Cubs picked up their first win of 2014, by beating the Manatees 13-2 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. Scott started strong and never lost his touch. The South African native began the game by retiring the first seven men he faced. Even after an error allowed Parker Berberet to reach base in the third, Scott immediately induced a double play to get out of trouble. Daytona's starter recorded two double plays in his outing and faced the minimum 19 batters before Orlando Arcia broke through with the Manatees' first hit with one out in the seventh. Scott allowed one more hit in the inning to Victor Roache, but that was all the Manatees could manage off the righty. On the offensive end, Daytona began to build its lead in the third inning. The Cubs struck first when Pin-Chieh Chen doubled home Tim Saunders. Later in the frame, Albert Almora extended the lead to 2-0 with a single to score Chen. Daytona grew its lead over the next three innings. Between the fourth and sixth frames, the Cubs added seven runs to their lead, including a Jeimer Candelario solo home run to lead off the fourth. Four more runs in the eighth made the score 13-0 Daytona. The Manatees' only runs came in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Michael Reed single. 'Tees starting pitcher Jed Bradley was saddled with the loss as he allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work. Almora, Chen and Saunders all had three RBI nights for the Cubs. Almora finished with a 5-for-6 performance. Chen's 3-for-5 evening consisted of all doubles. Meanwhile, Saunders he went 3-for-5 with a double and a walk. All three also scored twice. With their first win, the Cubs improved to 2-1. The Manatees fell to 2-1, but the teams will meet again on Monday night in Daytona in the series finale. Right-hander Jorge Lopez is scheduled to start for Brevard County, while fellow righty Rob Zastryzny is expected to take the hill for Daytona. First pitch at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark is slated for 7:05 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Not much good to talk about in this one. It was a night that Jed Bradley and the pitching staff as a whole would like to forget. The offense didn't have much luck either, managing just three hits, one each by Orlando Arcia, Michael Reed and Victor Roache. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard finally managed their first hits of the game in the seventh inning Brevard County Bottom of the 7th Tyrone Taylor flies out to left fielder Oliver Zapata. Orlando Arcia singles on a ground ball to second baseman Gioskar Amaya. Michael Reed pops out to second baseman Gioskar Amaya. Victor Roache singles on a fly ball to left fielder Oliver Zapata. Orlando Arcia to 2nd. Alfredo Rodriguez grounds out, second baseman Gioskar Amaya to first baseman Dan Vogelbach. And the Manatees got on the board with two runs in the ninth Brevard County Bottom of the 9th Bijan Rademacher remains in the game as the right fielder. Final: Brevard County 4, Daytona 3 (10 innings) Cooper's big hit propels Brevard to tenth inning win By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees04/05/2014 12:37 AM ET DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite blowing an early three run lead, the Brevard County Manatees battled to a 4-3, ten inning victory over the Daytona Cubs in their first road game of the 2014 season Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. After striking out in his first four at-bats, Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper came through with the go-ahead RBI single to center to put Brevard County (2-0 overall, 2-0 first half) up for good in the top half of the tenth inning. The Manatees struck early picking up a 1-0 lead three pitches into the game. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor led off the game with an infield single to short and was quickly driven home. Second baseman Orlando Arcia ripped the first pitch he saw from Cubs starter Jose Rosario down the left field line for an RBI double. After back-to-back walks to catcher Cameron Garfield and left fielder Victor Roache, with one out shortstop Yadiel Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to left to stretch Brevard County's lead to two. The Manatees' offense stayed hot by tacking on another run in the top half of the second inning. Third baseman Brandon Macias got the rally going by smacking a one-out double over the head of Daytona center fielder Albert Almora. Arcia picked up his second RBI of the night by lacing a triple down the right field line to score Macias and give Brevard County a 3-0 advantage. After retiring the first six batters of the game, Daytona (0-2, 0-2) finally got to Manatees starter Damien Magnifico in the bottom of the third. Designated hitter Bijan Rademacher doubled to deep center to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Marco Hernandez. Right fielder Pin-Chieh Chen then pushed across the Cubs first run of the season by driving in Rademacher with a line drive double to right to cut the lead to 3-1. After back-to-back scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, Daytona rallied again in the sixth. After a lead-off walk to second baseman Gioskar Amaya and a single by Chen, center fielder Albert Almora hit a hard grounder to second that Arcia couldn't handle. The error brought home the Cubs second run and cut the lead to one. Magnifico proceeded to walk the next batter and after first baseman Dan Vogelbach popped out to the catcher, left fielder Rock Shoulders scored Chen from third by grounding into a fielder's choice to second. The hard throwing right hander's night ended there. Despite the no-decision, Magnifico had arguably his best start with the Manatees, allowing just three hits and one earned run over 5.2 innings. Manager Joe Ayrault brought in right-hander Jacob Barnes to end the threat, but it was Garfield who quelled the rally. After a first pitch strike, the California native made a snap throw over to first to pick off Shoulders and end the inning. After Cooper's go-ahead base hit, Ayrault went to reliever Tanner Poppe. The right-hander closed the door on the Cubs by getting top prospect Almora to groundout with the tying and go-ahead runs on base. The Manatees will host the Cubs again on Saturday night as they play the third game of this four-game opening series. Brevard County will turn to left-hander Jed Bradley against Daytona's right-hander Tayler Scott. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central) at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/2/71017372/cuts/Magnifico_8.23_4_640x360_lx6ifapz_buvgpnlc.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Damien Magnifico, seen here in a game from 2013, allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings on Saturday night against the Daytona Cubs. Magnifico did not factor into the decision as Brevard County defeated Daytona 4-3 in ten innings at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Brevard County Box Score Garrett Cooper’s clutch base hit in the tenth came after he had struck out in each of his four previous plate appearances. Orlando Arcia went 2-for-5 on the night with a double and a triple and two RBI. His error sounded more like bad luck based on the radio call. They said it took a bad hop off the dirt. Interesting that he was at second base again tonight. Yadiel Rivera and Brandon Macias each doubled for the Manatees, while Cooper, Tyrone Taylor, Michael Reed and Cameron Garfield each added one hit. Victor Roache walked three times and struck out twice in five plate appearances. Reed stole a pair of bases including a big steal of second in the tenth inning to set the game winning run. Garfield did a great job of cutting down the Daytona running game, catching Rock Shoulders too far off first base and then gunning down Bijan Rademacher in the tenth inning as he was trying to steal second and get in to scoring position. Damien Magnifico pitched pretty well, giving up just one earned run over 5.2 innings. He allowed just three hits and kept the ball on the ground, inducing 14 ground ball outs. He did strike out just one, but as Manatees play-by-play man Dave Walkovic noted, Magnifico was sitting between 94-96 even in to the sixth inning. Jacob Barnes was fantastic in his 2.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit. Michael Strong worked a clean ninth to earn the win, and Tanner Poppe picked up the save. Poppe allowed three hits in his one inning of action, but was helped out big time by Garfield throwing out Rademacher. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard got things going early thanks to Taylor and Arcia Brevard County Top of the 1st Tyrone Taylor singles on a ground ball to shortstop Marco Hernandez. Final: Daytona 0, Brevard County 1 Wagner, Taylor shine in 'Tees Opening Day win By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees opened up their 2014 campaign at Space Coast Stadium with a tight, 1-0 victory over the Daytona Cubs on Thursday evening, in front of 3,576 fans. Brevard County (1-0 first half, 1-0 overall) grabbed the early lead in the bottom half of the third inning on a two-out, RBI double by center fielder Tyrone Taylor and never looked back. Led by a strong performance by right-hander Tyler Wagner (1-0, 0.00 ERA), Daytona (0-1, 0-1) was only able to muster three hits off the Las Vegas native. Wagner struck out three and walked only two, over his five innings of work. The Cubs attempted to rally in the seventh inning as first baseman Dan Vogelbach and third baseman Jeimer Candelario led off with consecutive singles, but right-handed reliever Martin Viramontes was able to buckle down. The former USC Trojan struck out left fielder Rock Shoulders and got catcher Chadd Krist hit a double play ball to third to end the threat. Viramontes' night was a part of a stout effort by the Manatees' bullpen as he and left-hander Stephen Peterson combined to allow just three base runners over their combined three innings of work. Tommy Toledo, who led the Manatees in saves a year ago, closed the door on the Cubs by getting Candelario to fly out to center - after allowing a two out walk - to end the game. Felix Pena took the loss in his first start with the Cubs, allowing the game's only run on three hits over six innings. The Manatees will travel to Daytona tomorrow evening to play the second game of this four-game opening series. Right-hander Damien Magnifico will take the mound for the Manatees against the Cubs' Jose Rosario. First pitch will be at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). Brevard County Box Score The Manatees got a great group effort out of their pitching staff, starting with Tyler Wagner. Wagner tossed five scoreless innings, scattering three hits. Martin Viramontes followed with two shutout innings and Stephen Peterson and Tommy Toledo completed the shutout. Brevard's offense didn't do much, but Tyrone Taylor had a nice night out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Orlando Arcia also added a double and Nathan Orf singled for the 'Tees. Orf also was hit by a pitch. Victor Roache and Michael Reed each recorded an outfield assist. Brevard County Play-By-Play The lone run of the game came with two outs in the third inning. Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Garrett Cooper strikes out swinging. Nathan Orf hit by pitch.
