    I’ve been a huge fan of Hiura’s and I’ve been wrong to date about him. I saw an electric bat coming up who would be a complete hitter in terms of average, extra base hits etc. He’s shown flashes of being that guy but for three years he’s been plagued by strikeouts, and missing badly in the zone. What’s worse, his role is complicated by the inability to hit lefties despite being a right handed hitter etc Honestly even if he had good splits against lefties, he could carve out a role splitting time with Rowdy or at DH. But he hits righties better and that makes a mess out of it. Nothing would make me happier than to see him succeed here but the path to a consistent role seems elusive. Perhaps he changes his approach from the launch angle frenzy and shows us that electric line drive bat that enticed us to begin with. Just from a layperson’s view, if you watch slow motions from when he’d miss in the strike zone, he looked like he was missing due to the upper cut. Obviously he and the staff would have seen all that too and it didn’t seem to get better.

    I doubt that Lutz will be a regular major leaguer. But I left for dead Tyrone Taylor’s major league possibilities and he has proven me wrong. Players develop at different rates and in different ways. As I recall Taylor got to AA and AAA and chopped around, seemingly hitting a wall. We know how that turned out as he’s a solid major league contributor.

    Contreras’ OPS against southpaws is huge here. That’s an area in which the Brewers needed significant help.

    All three teams may ultimately be happy even if the Brewers caught a windfall. The Braves wanted an elite player and were willing to move a young guy in Contreras where they had depth. Perhaps Contreras’ defense was a factor. I don’t know if it’s Charlie Greene (organizational catching instructor who has been touted over the years) specifically, but the Brewers are obviously comfortable developing a catcher’s receiving skills. So, the Braves’ concern may be the Brewers gain. The A’s got some prospects, including pitching from Atlanta. They highly coveted Ruiz. This is obvious because they had to get the two relievers in there for the Brewers. But, if the two pitchers the A’s got end up middle of the rotation starters and Ruiz can hit at all, they will also be pleased. If Ruiz can slap some hits through and add some bunts, maybe he gets on base enough to swipe 60-80 bags in their big ball park. His speed is electric.

    I think Ruiz is a valuable piece because of his electric speed in a changing game. Having said that, this looks like a great deal to pick up the younger Contreras at a position of need where there is a shortage of options. I think we benefitted from the three team nature of this. That dynamic allowed us to pull this off. I don’t think anyone here would have thought it realistic to pull off Ruiz for Contreras straight up, let alone acquire a couple of middling relievers. Unless Ruiz becomes Lou Brock this looks great.

    Rowdy will benefit from taking out the shift. That’s why his BABIP was so low. He hit right into the defense and doesn’t have the hit tool to do anything about it. He may be able to get 20 points added to his average and find 10 plus ribbies this way. He is an ideal example of a guy who will benefit from the rule change.

    He had 40 doubles and an OPS over .800 and has had power in the past. He’s an accomplished hitter. IMO

    Your money argument is nonsensical. You could take any mediocre player and compare him with a good player at that position and convince yourself that the incremental benefit isn’t worth it, one by one. And then you win 75 games. Rowdy, like Carter, is all homers and not much else. Even with his power he was a sub .800 OPS guy and couldn’t even knock in 90 runs from run producing spots in the order. He’s a subpar defender and could not even manage to hit .220. Comparing his strikeouts with Carter’s is way out on the margins. The Brewers need a force in the middle of the lineup, especially from the right side. Abreu solves all that Rowdy lacks. That’s worth the money difference. It’s precisely why Abreu gets paid. It’s precisely why other teams will be all over him. He may get priced outside of Milwaukee but it’s because he’s worth it.

Tellez is essentially Chris Carter. I am not saying he’s totally dumped like that but I doubt the FO sees him as a mainstay. If we trade a pitcher, perhaps Houser, I’d be all for signing Quintana. We have some good prospects. But there will be growing pains for sure no matter how good they will be in the end. I suspect the plan is to ease them in over the next couple of years while trying to stay in the race with a mix of vets leading young guys. Gradually, the young guys will get in place as regulars over a couple of year period. Re-upping with Wong signals that plan IMO. But by 2025 you might be looking at half a dozen regulars from our farm system. Guys that have been eased in. As an example, maybe Turang starts with 250 AB’s next year.

    I respect professors and respect math professors even more. I majored in science and took a lot of math as well. I frankly don’t have time to pore over baseball stats as much as I’d like, but I certainly understand it. Box scores and stats were one of my early draws to the game.

    I’m not backpedaling. If you laughably are distinguishing .255 from ..250 you understand math less than I thought. I always knew he was at .255. I said .250 as a rounded value to make a larger point. You do you, though. Keep sticking with our offense is fine because our averages are good in your eyes. That’s about as comical of a thread that’s been in here in years.

    I honestly don’t think he’s a good enough player to price himself out of Milwaukee. I think he will get a sizable deal but something we can swing. At some point Mark A will have to spend money (wisely) and I think he will on the right targets. I feel like Adames fits the bill.

    No. His career average is .255 in a sizable sample size. My point is that is a lot better than he’s hitting this year and we can expect him to getting back to .250. He is not the problem here but he also has to come down in the lineup.

    Travers pitched when I was a kid. He was definitely a guy I would always hope on but injuries derailed him. I didn’t give up on him for years. Must have been 79 or 80, I remember him getting on a role and winning at a good clip. He was still young and I thought there was a lot more potential. If turned out that those years constituted his last hurrah. He might have had a different career today, the way pitching is handled more delicately.

    If you look at Adames’ career, he profiles as a .250 hitter. This year he’s been hitting more like a power hitting 3B who can happen to field SS. I don’t know if he is sacrificing average for power, but he’s got an odd stat line for hitting second in the order. Having said all that, he seems like a guy we can extend.

    It's notable that Ashby has following the same pattern that Woodruff, Peralta, Burnsie, and Lauer have had in terms of developing as a starting pitcher. There is a lot to like with him. Worst case, I think he can be a weapon out of the pen.

    There’s no way I’d trade Turang for a rental. Not a chance. And I don’t think Stearns is stupid enough to do so either. It’s not in his history. Turang is an ascending player who is improving and has more room to get better. The Brewers may be more apt to deal a resurgent Tristen Lutz or Joe Gray. Maybe a SS like Zamora or even Garcia although I wouldn’t be inclined to move the latter. The Brewers system doesn’t have super depth but their top ten list includes attractive prospects. You aren’t cavalierly dealing them for rentals or patchwork.
