If we had a rested bullpen and he used Turnbow yesterday then I would have been upset. But Ned really had no choice, Derrick was by far the most fresh and he went with him. Even if it didn't pay off I'm not sure how upset I could be since there were not really any other options unless you want to use a guy who has thrown a lot lately. But I to do hate his post game press conferences. He always sounds like a condecending jerk.
What a game! Just got home from a buddies house where we were watching the game. Although Bush gave up some long balls he pitched pretty well I thought. Huge props of course to Prince for those two bombs, Stetter for pitching two great innings and Turnbow for coming in and getting it done. Hopefully it boosts his confidence a bit and he can be a valuable part of this bullpen.
I was gonna say that was the only time I really thought Braun was "cocky". But I never heard the whole story about the look after he hit the ball. When I really think about it, Im not sure Braun is all that cocky like people think. He plays hard every play and he as far as I know has never made a snarky comment in the media about anyone or anything. He is well spoken and really says the right things. My favorite player on the team hands down.
I agree, I hope he can keep the blown saves under 10. If he does that he will for sure get 40. And even though he is one of my favorite players I to get a little nervous when he is in because I know although still a very good closer he isn't the Gagne of 2002-2005 that just shut down anyone in his way. But two major surguries will do that to a pitcher and I accept that.
I'm thinking that we're probably looking at Dillon vs. Nelson vs. Branyan for that last spot on the bench. I'd lean towards a lefty, probably Nelson, for umpteen reasons stated above. Offensively, I'm not sure what Dillon gives you that Kapler doesn't. Robert If they chose Nelson or Branyan over Dillon I suppose I would be okay with that as well.
I'm still not giving up on my boy even after the 4th blown save. I know he should not have hit Izturis or given up the hit to who I think is the newest "Brewers Killer" Schumacher but he did strike out Ankiel and get Pujols to ground into that DP ball that Weeks screwed. So although it was a BS, it should have been his 7th save. I hate to say he has had some bad luck, but he really has. Hopefully he can run off like 10 or more in a row starting now and make everyone forget about the blown saves and still end up with 40+ by seasons end.
Meet Josh Butler: http://mlb.mlb.com/images/2006/06/03/2Whp8VSe.jpg From the blurb I read about him on the JS Brewer Blog from Baseball America he has some great stuff. Could end up being a hell of a deal by DM.
I would assume when all this pitching stuff is settled and Cameron is back our bench will consist of Gwynn, Dillon, Kapler, Rivera and Counsell. Which will take us down to 12 pitchers.
That would be cool with me. I would like to see Turnbow have some success so he is good for us or shows enough that we can trade him for some kind of value.
I'm a huge Bill Hall fan. Probably my second favorite guy on the team behind Braun. But besides the HR and a few key hits he has looked bad this season. Almost like a new 3TO, HR, K or Ground Out to SS. If he ever learns to consistently drive the ball to RCF and RF he will be incredible. I just don't know if he will learn if he hasn't yet. That being said he still could hit .260-.270 this season and hit 25 HR which is fine by me since he is also playing very nice at 3B.
I was critical of Gross at times. But I knew he was a good guy and worked hard. He sure had a hell of a final game in Milwaukee. Best of luck to Gabe! And welcome back TGJ!
