  1. I mean, it looked weird and silly, yes. I agree. It's a dumb move, and Davison has this habit of putting himself in bad situations, and we're to the point where he's just not going to get the benefit of the doubt. My question is, what is an F1 call trying to discourage in that scenario? That's a dumb play. Is it dangerous? I don't know. He wasn't cheap-shotting the guy in the groin (which I've seen plenty of times on a basketball court), he wasn't barreling through with an elbow, he wasn't even using the screener as leverage. It just seems really silly that, after the play (as a result of a Wisconsin timeout, no less), you use your monitor privileges to review THAT play. I mean, is that really worth sending a message about little, chippy tactics? Again, no real bearing on the outcome, and I think Davison was wrong. It just seems like a whole lot of effort for something that just isn't that big of a deal, especially when guys are jersey-tugging on screens all the time.
  2. I'm sorry, and I know the rule, but that F1 on Davison is so weak. It didn't cost the Badgers the game (their inability to score over the last 7 minutes did), but that hook rule gets interpreted in really ticky-tack ways. I don't know what to make of Wisconsin. They played tough, but they are just generally uninspiring. I would say they are more likely than not to get a bid, but I think there's a decent chance the B1G just gets to them and they end up 9-11 in league, and 15 losses is a lot...
  3. The Spanish article says the Brewers are checking to see if Urias needs wrist surgery (as in, that is the primary goal here--of course that could be just the reporter's way of phrasing it, but my read of the original source is that the Brewers know enough about the injury to think surgery may be needed), so obviously there is some concern. The worrisome thing for me would be that Urias informed the Brewers 2-3 weeks ago, got a "rest and see" response, and now, here we are. Not saying it happened like that, but the lag between injury and evaluation suggests, at least, that the wrist is still bothering him, and you'd think anything minor would clear up after 2 weeks of rest. I wouldn't say I am preparing for the worst, but my own feeling is it is more likely than not Urias misses time. "Surgery" can be have widely different recovery options, though. Who knows? Wait and see, I guess....
  4. Yeah, two road games in a row they just looked flat. Purdue seems to own the swing. Feels like UW always struggles to score against them. Also, Purdue was desperate for a win, but still disappointed the Badgers were so far from matching their intensity At Iowa is winnable.
  5. That's about what a win against a bad B1G team should look like. Purdue is on the ropes a bit (had a big win against MSU but then got blown out by Illinois), so we'll see how that goes Friday. I think the Boilers may be desperate for a win, and Painter has a good record against Gard IIRC, so I'm not overly optimistic. Still, it's a chance for another big road win.
  6. Tonight is one of very few "don't slip up" games for the Badgers. There aren't many bad losses in the B1G, but home to Nebraska is one of them.
  7. The Badgers losses in 14-15 hoops are the toughest for me (outside of the Brewers, of course), but it's so hard to really rationally expect a championship. Especially in college hoops, which may be the most random of all the sports once you get to postseason. Back-to-back Final Fours is just a massive accomplishment, and it's hard to imagine a national title changing, well, much of anything. That Badger team in '15 got the most iconic win the sport can offer--at the FF, against Kentucky, against the team with the best shot to go undefeated in 35 years. Stings that they lost a 9-point, second half lead against Duke, stings especially that they couldn't stop Greyson Allen, but that team is as good as you can be without winning it all.
  8. What a win. Feels like thievery. But, you have to win quad 1 home games and they did. 1-1 was probably the best you could hope for this week, so MSU Friday becomes house money now.
  9. Man, could be 4-1 in league if they'd finished on Thursday. Oh well. If Potter and King are this good, there is reason to hope.

  11. Yeah, I think they are going to be right around the cut line barring big wins against, say, MSU. That said, they put up a good half today. See if they can close it out. This is about the most mercurial Badgers team I can remember.

  13. Yeah, the NET likes them a lot, which is good. My one hesitation is just that I'm not really sure how much the NCAA is going to rely on a team's own NET ranking versus the NET of their opponents. I know that sounds weird, but, with the RPI, the RPI of who you played seemed to always matter WAY more than your own RPI. With there only being a one-year sample size so far, I'm not sure how the committee is going to use the NET. It frames the whole Quadrant system, of course, but you can lose a lot of Quad 1 games and still have a high NET. A couple of things would concern me if I'm the Badgers re: selection: 1) That road/neutral record isn't great. They have two nice road wins, but I think they're going to need to poach a few good road wins in league play. 2) Saint Mary's is going to be a team in the vicinity of the cutline, as might Richmond. Usually, the selection process has been weighted to favor major conference teams (maybe not as an explicit bias, but certainly as a result of the selection criteria and general scheduling principles employed by teams), but, in this case, the Badgers will have neutral court losses to two teams that they might be in direct competition with come Selection Sunday. Obviously, it's January 5th. But those are things worth monitoring, I think... Edit: Just to add a note on Pritzl, who, in my view, has been the Badgers' most important player so far this year. He's shooting well and defending well, and he's earned his minutes, I think, though I was surprised King didn't get more time v. OSU. He made the most of his 2nd half, though!
  14. Badgers look like a different team these last two outings...back-to-back Quad 1 wins on the road (though who knows if Tennessee will stay that way--they look ugly right now). In the B1G, it's looking like you really have to take care of business against Nebraska and Northwestern. As long as you beat those teams, there are no bad losses in league play. Given the pretty bad noncon, I think I'd want to be 12-8 at the end of league play to feel good about a bid. Ideally, they can grab a few more road wins too because I wouldn't want to be like 3-13 in road/neutral environments and be anywhere near the cut line.
  15. It's weird. The NET loves the B1G. Some natiional CBS guys too. There was some 9 bid chatter last week. Yet, when I watch, I don't really see a lot of great teams. Maybe I will end up wrong, bit nobody really scares me. I honestly think the Badgers, as bad as they've looked, could finish anywherr from 4th to 10th.

  17. I'm interested in the draft pick discussion, in large part because I think the CBPs are a little overrated. How much better is the 71st player on the board compared with, say, the 110th? The difference in projected value has to be pretty small, and then there's the issue of the error bars around any projection dealing with a young baseball player. It just seems like this is a better way to accrue value. You're making a much surer bet. Of course, Narvaez could be bad or not hit like we think or whatever, but it seems smart to trade a small amount of distant future WAR for a small amount of now WAR, even considering that you're also giving up another player. As others have said, there are just so many ways to acquire talent that I don't know that I buy the "draft and develop" model for small markets. I have a sense that draft picks are a little bit of a market inefficiency, overvalued because of the Cubs and Astros recent narratives. So, I side with DS on this one.
  18. Very limited offensively. On a fun note, Stephen F. Austin just won @Duke at the buzzer on a crazy play. The number one team in the country has now lost twice this year at home to teams who finished under .500 last year in one-bid leagues. That is nuts. I wonder where winning at Cameron ranks compared with, say, winning an NCAA tourney game at SFA. Think they'd trade this win for a Sweet 16? Probably. But not for anything less as I see it.
  19. The A-10 had a good day yesterday. I think the B1G is going to be down. MSU isn't full-strength, but who knows when Langford comes back, and I'm not a big believer in Maryland. If I could get decent odds, I might be highest on Ohio State to win the league just because of Holtmann. As for the Badgers, they lack a true scoring threat. That's been obvious all year, and I don't see it getting much better, though maybe Potter helps when he becomes eligible. Still plenty of chances for quality wins, but you're not going to be able to beat many good teams going scoreless for 4 and 5 minute stretches regularly. We'll see if King or Ford can emerge as a real scorer. Ford is one of those guys who isn't very good if he's not shooting, but if he finds a consistent 3-point shot, he'll become awful hard to guard.
  20. I don't about the B1G this year. Win against Providence aside, Northwestern looks terrible. Purdue has lost twice to decent teams. Nebraska is about as bad as it gets. Rutgers is Rutgers. Michigan looks to be down. Maybe Maryland, MSU, and OSU will be tough, but no one else scares me one bit. Badgers look awfully mediocre, of course, especially with King a question mark, but who's a safe bet to win lots of games outside the top 3? I think this could be like a 4-bid year. I'd be pretty surprised if it was more than 5 B1G teams in the NCAA's.
  21. Tough loss. Had chances to extend the lead late. Missed some free throws. Good effort overall. I think it's one of those games that helps down the line. Just need to find an answer on big possessions. Glad to have hoops back and happy for SMC. I'd rather see a Badgers win, but tonight's result is probably good for the game long-term. Gives what should be a quality win to a team that would probably deserve an at-large over mediocre Pac-12 filler but wouldn't get a look without it.
  22. Early basketball season is so meaningless. Having an experienced team is usually a ticket to success for obvious reasons. Freshman are a shell of what they will actually be by mid season and especially March. Typically I treat it all like preseason until conference play. Then I start to care about results. Non conference games before then are a tune up and get the team to gel. From a major conference perspective, I agree completely. It is way different for a school like SMC, though. Even A-10 schools play their most meaningful games in November and December. Without wins against the few Power 7 schools that will schedule them, those teams have no shot. My least favorite part of the CBK structure...
  23. Good 15 minites, bad 5. Missed free throws and stagnant offense for stretches. Reminds me of last year a bit. Like that King's been assertive. Ford for SMC has about 6 nothing-you-can-do points. Good player.
  24. Badgers underdogs on the neutral. +4.5. I don't know how confident I am in Wisconsin winning, but in a game that will probably be played in 65 or so possessions, I'd take the points. Looking forward to a good game.
  25. Looking forward to the opener next Tuesday. Everyone will of course be watching the Champions Classic, but UW-SMC is a really good matchup. Wouldn't be surprised at a pick 'em and would take SMC if the Badgers are more than a 3 pt. favorite. It's a great game to get oit of the chute, as it will provide a real test for a team with a lot of question marks and be a very good win if they succeed.
