  1. Well, Lucchesi's pitch count is up, anyway. I guess that's good.
  2. If we aren't out of the division, the Phillies and Mets aren't out of the wildcard. Especially the Phils, who have those 5 games vs. the Nats. If the Cards roll against the Cubs, and we muddle to the end at 5-5, it's no inconceivable we could get caught from behind.
  3. That's a good way to look at it. The good news, from where I sit, is that both the Cubs and Nats could easily end with a losing record over these next 10 games. Every win the Brewers put up is just so important, and I don't think our last week is as "easy" as it seems. That makes these next 4 about as important as it gets. If we're two up on the Cubs on Monday, I'd feel really good. If we're even, I'm pretty nervous.
  4. The Cubs pen must be gassed. And it isn't great to begin with. The Nats play 11 games in 10 after today, also with a bad bullpen. I like our depth. I like our chances at back-to-back playoffs. It starts tonight! Go Crew!
  5. I'm guessing Grandal will be at first tonight. Probably Perez in the lineup too. My prediction: Cain Grandal (1B) Hiura Moose Braun Perez Gamel Pina Lyles Wouldn't be shocked to see Arcia at short either, which would move Gamel to 6 and Pina to 7.
  6. Well, at 20 games to go, we were 2 back of the Cubs. After an 8-2 stretch, we've pulled even. I think I'm in Cardinals sweep territory. As much I dislike the Cardinals for what they've done to us over the years, my interactions with their fans have generally been much more positive than with the Cubs. Of course, I wish both teams could lose, but the Cubs had their moment, and I want back-to-back playoff berths however it happens. Here's hoping we rattle of another mini-streak, and are 2 or 3 up on the Cubs by Monday morning...
  7. That Garrett thing was awesome. So hilarious. A great little baseball moment. I am going to try to remember that if the Reds manage to take two of three against us. I think any neutral should be Team Garrett, and it seems objective enough that I hope I'd manage to be Team Garrett even if it was Grandal yelling at him.
  8. Lamet is fireballing. Might have to win this one offf the bullpen if it's going to happen.
  9. One bad pitch so far for Houser. Gotta score more than 2, boys! Go get 'em!
  10. 1 back of WC 1. Can't be too upset about that. I think I will be rooting for the Cards to sweep the Cubs (ick). My loyalties swing day by day. I just think our best chance involves one of those teams getting lots of L's, and we are closer to the Cubs in the standings. Plus, I think CC is a great manager for a 1-0 situation.
  11. The fact that those are "earned" runs is just so, so stupid. I hate that. "Routine effort" is supposed to be the standard, but somehow it always takes more than "routine effort" to avoid getting blinded by the sun. That inning is a microcosm of why I think the Nats are going to implode. Martinez basically just opted to give up an out and reduce run expectancy. Granted, they got the run, but even best case, Scherzer gets what? 3 more outs? With 6 left to get? Don't get it either. Basically, Martinez is either too deferential to Scherzer, or he's got 0 faith in his bullpen. That doesn't seem like a recipe for winning late-season, pressure games.
  12. Well, after this one, we'll be either 1 GB the Nats for the 1st WC or 1.5 behind the Cards for the division. Given that, I'm changing my default assumption that the division is out of reach. Go Nats today. Hope Scherzer can keep them off the board and then we can get within 1 tonight. Whatever happens, a win from the Crew tonight is immensely helpful from a playoff odds standpoint.
  13. Man. Fast-moving game. I am nervous. Nice to have Paddack out, but sure could use another couple of runs.
  14. 3-1 now. RBI double from Schwarber. Castellanos is ablaze. Dude is making serious bank this last month or so.
  15. True! Before my time. Hope we add a WS and make it closer!
  16. This might be the best three-year stretch this franchise has ever put up. It's certainly the best since I've been following them. And next year's lineup is going to include Grisham, Yelich, and Hiura (and let's not forget Cain!), not to mention a rotation with Woodruff and Houser, and, of course, the most electric reliever in the game, probably along with Suter and Knebel (at some point) and some other young arms that are really fun to watch. I'm sayin, never been better. Let's keep it rolling!
  17. True as I can see it. It's possible we could tie the Nats. If they lose two to the Cards, they could win the rest and end with an identical 93-69 record. In that scenario, though, we'd definitely pass either the Cubs or the Cards. Winning out, as I look at the math, seems to me like worst case scenario is hosting the WC game. Edit: And I'm wrong. We could win out and finish WC 2 if the Nats also win out or go 12-1. We'd still pass the Cubs/Cards, though.
  18. I'm not sleeping on Lamet and Lucchesi (especially the latter, who seems engineered to perform well against the Brewers), but this is the matchup that I think we're least likely to take. Nice to see Woody back. Guessing it'll by Spangy at short and maybe Moose or Shaw at second? We'll see if Hiura is ready to play the field. Not thrilled about that defensively, but I imagine Braun gets a day today or tomorrow since he'll be in for sure vs. the lefty, and maybe we try the best defensive outfield with Grisham, Cain, and Gamel tonight.
  19. The Cubs have been good at home all year. I'm not surprised they've won 5 in a row. I think the Reds end that streak tonight, but we'll see. This really is a coin flip at this point. I'll be disappointed if the Crew doesn't get in, but I'm trying to enjoy the ride as a bonus. I thought this team was toast in late August. I still think 88 wins gives you a good shot. Obviously 89 or 90 is better, but 7-5 for us and 6-6 or even 5-7 for the Cubs is not all that unlikely, and that's not even counting the Nats, who could definitely go 6-7 against the Phillies, Marlins, Cardinals, and Indians (they have Thursday off but then have 11 games in 10 days to close the season, and that bullpen is, well, that bullpen). I think an 8-4 finish is going to put us straight into the WC. Win your games. Try to forget the day-by-day standings. Look at everything going into the Colorado series. I'm personally rooting for the Cardinals the rest of the way (ick). Not like I'm going all out, of course, but I think our best shot for postseason play is losses by the Nats and Cubs. 3 games is a lot to make up with 12 to go. I guess, ideal scenario, the Nats have to throw Strasburg and Scherzer just to get in, and we finish tied with them for the WC. We host the WC game by virtue of winning the season series. I think we have a better shot at beating the Cubs, probably, but I just couldn't stomach a loss to them to end our season. I'd rather play the Nats. The downside is just your standard baseball stuff. There's none of the messy rivalry emotions involved.
  20. I just think the Nats are in trouble. Somebody is going to lose a bunch of games in these last two weeks. I hooe it is the Cubs and Nats. It could be us. I just think Washington has a brutal schedule. I think they are feeling some pressure. I don't think Martinez is very good. Could be wrong, but I think an all-NL Central WC game is a realer possibility than the odds might suggest.
  21. Michael Lorenzen just hit with the bases loadrd and two outs. 5 pitches. All balls. He swung at 3.
  22. Ouch. That is exactly the pitch Arcia shouldn't swing at.
  23. I think, watching Black pitch, that he's a good option for next year's pen almost certainly. Is he a high-leverage option? I don't know. But at this point, I'm pretty comfortable having him out there in a "keep them close" role, yesterday notwithstanding. You need guys like that. Of course, it's the bullpen. It's the most random part of baseball. But, yeah. For now, I think he's a good arm to have.
  24. Actually it looks like the NL is inexplicably first. Seems stupid considering we were first last year. Not to get too off-topic here...but completely agree, I think if we get a lead through 7...it's Hader to finish. I also doubt we would ever let a pitcher bat, maybe once if Lyles or Houser is particularly effective. I'm imagining something like Lyles, Woodruff, Houser, Pomeranz, Hader as the 5 guys we use to try and get through any wildcard game. The most fun part, is I would almost guarantee that Tyrone Taylor is on a wildcard roster...since we'll probably only carry 8-9 pitchers for a one off and his speed/defense would have value. There goes that. NL is first. Wow. I thought it was supposed to alternate. Probably matters more for us than anyone else that it is first, but I guess you can also throw Lyles (who I'd start), Woody, Houser, as you say. So, basically our whole rotation is going to make the roster and then pitch out of the pen. Hopefully you can set it up like that.
