  1. Doesn’t seem like what Stearns would do.l Yah...and three weeks ago trading for Machado was not a Stearns type move. It was almost offensive to even mention it. Now we are rumored a front runner putting together pretty substantial packages together to offer. Maybe we just don’t know what Stearns will do with a really good team. Something he hasn’t had before this year. Hasn’t even had a true contending team planned from the winter prior. 2017 was more a surprise. I keep telling people it’s too early to start assuming what Stearns is going to do or won’t do. Your point is sound. In fairness, I'm still very surprised by the rumors. This definitely seems unlike what I've grown to expect from Stearns over the last 3 years. I still don't think he'll overpay, the offer noted by Bowden is wildly ridiculous. I'll add, this is entirely my opinion...no facts here, well other than Bowden is wildly ridiculous...that's a fact. If Arcia's stock has seriously dropped that much, I'd rather not trade him at all. Send him to AAA for the rest of the year and work on his swing mechanics/approach over the offseason. If you haven't gone to the orioles fan board and want to see some serious comedy, you should. Below is the most recent offer I saw...in this case between the orioles and yankees. And this isn't isolated to one or a few guys, there are probably 2 or 3 sane guys shooting down these outlandish offers made by 20-30 of them. "Manny, Gaus and Britton for Sheffield, Andujar, Frazier, Estrata, Tate, Garcia and Drury . Go big if you are going to deal with the Yanks"
  2. LOL! I feel like this guy must work for the Orioles, what an awful awful proposal.
  3. Many people think Woodruff may be involved. Especially considering he hasn't pitched in a while. Maybe we are sitting him down to avoid injury and think a trade is relatively imminent. Santana has been mentioned, but less mentioned. O's have a bigger need in CF than a corner if it's an mlb ready guy, hence why Phillips and Broxton are floated.
  4. Teams don't give up solid MLB contributors when they are trying to compete, unless they are addressing another weakness on their roster. I don't see them as having any gaping holes that need to be plugged, so that doesn't appear realistic.
  5. Dyson is better than a lot of people think, he has really good stuff and throws very hard. That said, I just don't see the Giants giving up. They are 4 games out of the division and their window with Bumgarner could be closing if they don't resign him. I could see a total teardown at the deadline next season, but not this season.
  6. I think you roll with Peralta in a starting role into early-mid september and shut him down. I wouldn't try getting fancy and keep him pitching too long. He's very young, we shouldn't take risks with his arm. In September, we have enough minor league bullpen arms that we can do 3 or 4 bullpen games down the stretch. Definitely not ideal, but it's doable if we happen to be short on SP options. I think by then we may have Nelson or Davies back to go with the guys we have...should be ok.
  7. One perk to dealing Ortiz/Phillips, clears what would be 2 required 40 man spots after the season. I can't imagine the garbage Baltimore has on their 40 man...
  8. Excellent point, platinum standard...
  9. Can someone with access to these articles provide some cliff notes? I'm far too cheap to pay for the Athletic. https://theathletic.com/427194/2018/07/10/rosenthal-as-machado-talks-heat-up-dodgers-and-brewers-haggle-with-orioles-over-the-price/
  10. Jean Segura: Year 3 (age 24) .614 OPS Brandon Crawford: Year 3 (age 26) .674 OPS Orlando Arcia: Year 3 (age 23) .482 OPS - yes, that's terrible, but a pretty good season the year before it. He's not this bad. Elvis Andrus: Year 3 (age 22) .708 OPS - He had 4 .650ish OPS seasona after this. He didn't truly start hitting until age 27 (year 8) Andrelton Simmons: Year 3 (age 24) .617 OPS Save for Arcia, these are all All Star bats with an .800+ OPS now after they've gotten to their 5th or so year. If Stearns thinks Arcia's swing is irreparable, I'll take his word for it. I'm not suggesting that Arcia is going to turn into one of these guys in year 5 but it seems like a lot of these guys get called up early for their glove and the bat trails it. The final question is whether you want to wait until year 6 or 7 when he's about to need another contract. Another valid question. Yes, this. Also agree that if Stearns/CC/scouts think Arcia can't be fixed at the plate...now is the best time to trade him. But even if we are resigned to trading him, we are better off including him in a package for a more valuable player/contract than overpaying with him for Machado.
  11. Of course Arcia isn't as good as Machado, from a contractual standpoint he holds more value though. And of course Arcia may not find it at the plate again, but it is probably more likely than not that he settles in as an above 700 ops hitter in due time. I'm willing to trade Arcia, but not for a rental. Maybe in a Realmuto trade but probably more likely in a Degrom trade. Value matters, you can't simply say "well we have depth...we can afford to trade him" and trade him. I could certainly pick out more posts than that one in this thread with a similar premise.
  12. If some teams requests Arcia in a trade, that isn't going to hold me back. Yes, he may bounce back and hit, but I will take that risk if some team values him enough to ask for him. You can find defensive SS for free (Saladino, Rivera). You don't simply trade someone because you have depth. Should we throw every depth piece we have into the Machado trade and send over 10 players...just because we can? I feel like this is becoming a common theme on this board, guys willing to send over anybody and everybody that they consider depth. Value matters far more than depth at a position. Obviously we should prefer to deal from positions of depth, but getting reasonable value is primary concern. Arcia alone is more valuable than Machado. He was very serviceable at the plate last year with the plus defense, sometimes guys simply have awful years. He also has the tools to be successful at the plate, so it's far too early to give up on him.
  13. Update - Aguilar and Segura in the lead. I responded by voting about 100 more times for Aguilar. Keep it rolling!
  14. Being a contract year is mostly irrelevant, in fact I'd argue it's beneficial. If we trade for him, I would hope he mashes the rest of the year in hopes of increasing his appeal for the big contract. I hope he overachieves on his true talent level at the plate, and improves defensively as he knows he has to if he's going to stick at SS. It's not like we are giving up immense talent for 2+ years of him in a career year and he may regress. All signs point to us getting a below average defender with a 900+ ops for the 2nd half of the season if we in fact acquire Machado. I'll also add regarding his comments about SS, there's a sound bite in the interview where he says he'll play wherever asked if traded to a contender. I don't think we'd have issue with him potentially playing some 3b on occasion. I still don't think he has a great attitude and feels like a me-first player, but it's probably worth the risk...by all accounts the clubhouse is in a fantastic place and I doubt Machado significantly impacts that.
  15. What happens if we trade for him and need him to sub in at 3rd occasionally? Will he do it willingly? Its also generally not good to throw a me-first player into a contending clubhouse.
  16. I am honestly a bit concerned about him being a cancer in the clubhouse. Clearly a "me-first" player that cares zero about team success and entirely about himself.
  17. Right, it's safe to assume the Orioles have received multiple offers that are universally considered to be more valuable than a comp pick. Their only leverage is pitting teams against each other to try and maximize return. But all teams involved know that they have to trade him.
  18. The bold alone is a fair statement. Realmuto missing magnifies the problem.
  19. And then there's Perez, super glued to the bench and there just in case for every position.
  20. Phillips and Woodruff makes a bit more sense than Broxton and Woodruff. Phillips is a better prospect and more likely to be a solid regular than Broxton, but right now Broxton helps us more. We would be trading away an 80 grade laugh though...
  21. My lineup prediction for today. Cain Yelich Machado Shaw Aguilar Thames Miller Nottingham Just kidding, or wishful thinking. Swap Machado for Saladino, Aguilar in front of Shaw batting 3rd, Saladino 7th in front of nottingham.
  22. Piggybacking off this, see tweet below. If him not starting tonight is truly a new development...could be something there.
  23. If that's the case, how did Goldschmidt get in? That guy was pure garbage at the plate until June.
  24. With the emergence of Peralta, I think I'd do this. When folks have been throwing out packages with two of our top guys and 3-5 total players I was out. But if it's just one guy I think I go for it, and that's coming from someone who's been fairly staunch on not giving up our controlled P prospects. Just because a guy is expendable, doesn't mean we should give him away. We need to keep value in mind, Burnes probably gets Machado...but that feels like a steep overpay. We could get more for Burnes if intent on trading him.
  25. I'm kinda where you are at. I'm going to LOL at these premium prospects reported like Mejia or Verdugo or Hiura, I also don't think Burnes or Ruiz or any of that next tier gets included...but who knows with the type of talent Machado is. If it gets to that level, I don't think the Brewers get him. I really don't think we include Burnes in this trade.
