  1. A’s carrying their momentum from Pittsburgh.
  2. Here’s my nominee for the “misuse of statistics” award for today. Steven Watson “ Good news, the Brewers are 10-3 in one run games so maybe some hope for the Crew to come back”. Tuesday’s game notwithstanding, the vast majority of those one run wins come from protecting or hanging on to leads, not coming from behind. At least this game won’t tarnish that one run game stat.
  3. Tellez hasn’t been contributing much more lately.
  4. These are pretty frightening words coming from someone who said last July when they had a 4 game lead that the Brewers making the playoffs was “almost a given” or something like that. 😁
  5. With the two pitchers are going to be seeing to finish the game the prospects for the Brewers scoring are not good. Over/under on K’s is about 4.5.
  6. It would be amusing to look back at some of the comments made about the Cardinals in August of 2021 when they were under.500, double digits behind the Brewers and given about a 2% chance to make the playoffs. We can all see the rational arguments for why the Cardinals are incapable (or at least unlikely) to make a charge to get them to 85 or so wins. But, karma and superstition if nothing else warrant keeping a wary eye on them.
  7. The Brewers have reverted to the “no add on” offense. Another run or two here would be nice.
  8. The reason I can’t focus on that too much is that it’s at least 6 weeks until Woodruff will be pitching for the Brewers, and that’s assuming no setbacks. If and when he does come back he isn’t going to be pitching 7-8 innings right away, so you might want someone who can back him up with multiple innings. Lauer was pretty terrible before he went on the IL. Who knows what he’ll be like when he comes back. Miley is always going to be an injury risk, etc, etc. The least of my (and Counsell’s) concerns is what the Brewers will do if they have 6 healthy and effective starting pitchers. If they think they are in that position in mid July, they would seem to be in a good position to make a trade that would get them a hitter.
  9. My answer to the first question is that I wouldn’t spend any time thinking about it. Chances are that that will work itself out through injuries and/or poor performance. Regardless of who’s available I wouldn’t want to go to a true six man rotation. With off days the SP would sometimes have a full week between starts, and that isn’t ideal. I’d prefer a 5 man rotation with maybe an occasional 6th SP during periods without off days for two weeks or more. On the second question, I still think the Cardinals are the most likely threat. They have the veteran talent that has shown that they can carry a team to an extended stretch of winning. They’ve put together charges each of the last two years and seem more likely than the other teams to do it again
  10. The Colin Rea offense makes another appearance. The Brewers have averaged 8 runs per game in his last 4 starts, which is incredible considering how poor the offense has been in general.
  11. First time in a while that the Brewers have scored early and then added on to eliminate the suspense.
  12. For anyone who’s watched Ted Lasso, Wiemer the last few days has been like Roy Kent. “He’s here, he’s there, he’s every f***ing where”.
  13. What catchers do the Brewers have in the minors. Looks like they’re going to need one.
  14. Wiemer is smoking. I thought he had hit one out last night but he just missed the corner of the bullpen.
  15. We had a nice night at the ballpark last night. The highlight of the night for me was Wiemer’s catch on Hicks’ drive that looked like a sure two run double. Seeing him chase that down was more impressive in person when you could see how far he had to go. 3-1 on the season now. More wins than we saw in 12 games last year.
  16. Nice to see the Brewers scoring some early runs the last few days (except Monday).
  17. I wonder if Rea could take the mound more than once every 5 days. An update on something I posted on Saturday. In Rea’s last 4 starts, the Brewers have scored 32 runs. In the 17 other games since the first of those 4 starts they’ve scored a total of 39.
  18. Major league experience is not a requirement for a LHP to shut down the Brewers offense.
  19. I am confident, or at least hopeful, that he does not have a concussion. A shot to the nose can be very painful, but it seemed like something of a glancing blow that wouldn’t cause a concussion. But, a shot like that can also make your eyes water, and as the first hitter coming up, he wouldn’t be ready that quickly.
  20. Hopefully Monasterio will be OK. Part of the problem was that he was first up in the inning so they really didn’t have a chance to see if he could get straightened out from the poke in the nose.
  21. They’re capable of throwing 3 days in a row, but it’s a question of how effective they’re going to be and how it might affect them down the road. Williams threw 26 high stress pitches today after an inning yesterday. I will be shocked if he’s in tomorrow.
  22. There is a tangible negative to the way today’s game played out. By failing to add on any runs after Contreras HR and being forced to use Wilson for 2 innings and Williams to finish, the bullpen will be weaker tomorrow than it would have been with a more comfortable win.
  23. That would have been a rough one to let get away, especially now that Williams is down for tomorrow, if not the next two days.
  24. There’s the danger when you won’t use your closer unless it’s a safe situation.
  25. Well, he couldn’t get an out and the lead is in jeopardy.
