  1. What he apparently does well is get the players to understand their roles so that all,of them are pulling in the same direction. That is probably the biggest thing that is in the manager’s control What managers do you think are noticeably better at in game decisions like managing pitching moves?
  2. Sending a runner on a 3-0 pitch would be really unusual. A hitter having a green light doesn’t mean “swing”. It should mean look for your pitch and if you get it, drive it. I can pretty much guarantee that, if Turang had been running, and Contreras took a strike because it wasn’t what he was looking for, and Turang was thrown out, a lot of the same people who are now saying he should have been running would be saying “way to run yourself out of an inning”,
  3. I strongly disagree that pessimism about facing Skubal and Skenes is “nonsense”. It’s not that they can’t be beaten, but you can’t deny that the probability of winning is lower when facing those pitchers than others. The Brewers were able to scrape out 4 runs, but still lost. I’ll bet the Reds aren’t unhappy about getting to play the Tigers this weekend without having to face Skubal. The Brewers have never had that good fortune, and are now 0-3 in games that he’s started.
  4. BTW, I did not see the game live, but saw the summaries and watched a condensed version. I have no problem with Contreras swinging at that 3-0 pitch. You have your best right handed hitter at the plate with an opportunity to drive in a run and open up a big inning. As someone else said the next pitch might not have been as good to hit. If he had swung at a bad pitch, it would’ve upset me, but if he had driven it like he did in his previous at bat, everyone would have thought that it was brilliant.
  5. One thing that hasn’t gotten too much attention is that the Brewers have only 1 HR in their last 8 games. They have been able to scratch out some wins, but it can be hard to score when you have to string together hits and walk and stolen bases. The Tigers showed today the value of being able to hit the long ball.
  6. They’re 5-9 in their last 14, so definitely haven’t gone 6-4 in the last 10. They may not be imploding but they are drifting in the wrong direction while the division rivals are surging. This series did nothing to alleviate the concern I expressed the other day of where the Brewers might be by the end of May.
  7. I will be away this afternoon and don’t expect to miss anything I’d want to see. Levering probably won’t have many opportunities to whine about “rockets” that find a glove.
  8. Not like they’re going to need him with Skubal pitching tomorrow.
  9. I don’t like the fact that they didn’t make any moves to improve the positions that will be black holes, even when they are at full strength.
  10. It’s OK. The offense should come alive the next two days against Skubal and Skenes.
  11. This is what happens when your 6 through 9 hitters are guys that should either be on the bench or batting 9th It doesn’t help either when your 3 through 5 hitters are more suited to batting sixth or seventh.
  12. They aren’t playing the 2025 teams. They are playing teams that are going well now while the Brewers are shorthanded.
  13. I had not heard that Chourio was swinging a bat on the field. That must have come out recently. The last I heard was that he wasn’t swinging against live pitching because they were afraid that a check swing might rebreak the bone in his hand. So, I guess if everything goes well he could go on a rehab assignment and return to the Brewers after only missing a few more series. We’ll see. I have not heard anything about Vaughn since they said several weeks ago that he was targeting a mid May return. Considering that he will presumably need a rehab assignment, and there have been no updates, mid May seems like a best case. Many years of experience following Brewers injuries have taught me to expect that players will be out longer than the original estimates. if you recall, when the Brewers placed Chourio on the IL on Opening Day they said he was expected to miss 2-4 weeks. That 4 weeks is coming up the day after tomorrow.
  14. I don’t think it’s at all misleading with respect to the schedule to date. It’s not always who you play, but when you play them, and in April the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Royals, Nats, Marlins and White Sox were all struggling. Looking ahead, the Tigers, Yankees, Padres, Cubs, and Dodgers are all playoff teams from last year that are expected to contend this year and are off fo good starts. Maybe the Pirates DBacks, and Cardinals will fade, later, but they are playing better now than almost all of the teams the Brewers played up to now, and they are getting the Brewers while they are down. I’ll put it this way. If the Brewers get to the end of May within a couple of games of the division lead, they could be in pretty good shape going forward. But it might be hard for them to get there. ETA- Murphy announced this afternoon that Vaughn has started swinging a bat. Apparently no word on when he might face live pitching and go on a rehab assignment.
  15. I will be surprised if the Brewers are in first place at the All Star break. The Brewers have built their 12-9 record with the help of a very weak early schedule. Only one of their seven opponents (the Rays) is above .500. Those 7 teams have an aggregate record of 66-91. That changes dramatically starting tonight. Only one of the opponents in the next 11 series is currently below .500, and that's the Nats, who have already shown the Brewers that they can be pesky despite being 7-13 in games against teams not wearing WISCO jerseys. The schedule includes series against the Yankees and Dodgers and dates with Skubal and Skenes this week With no returns for Chourio, Vaughn, or Yelich in sight, and the bullpen and starting rotation unsettled,, this could be a very difficult 5 weeks. i expect them to be below .500 at the end of May, and a handful of games behind whichever division teams maintain their current pace. They very well might be in last place. The schedule lightens up in June, so my hope is that the Brewers don't dig themselves too big a hole in May and can get the batting order, rotation and bullpen straightened out and be in solid contending position by the All Star break.
  16. I think he was breaking for most of the second half of last season.
  17. This game is as close to a forfeit as a major league game can get. With the lineup they put out there it was probably going to take a shutout to win. I can’t say I’m looking forward to watching this Crew facing Shubal on Thursday and Skenes on Friday. No hitter alerts may be in order.
  18. That trade is an example of the downside to the “if we keep this guy we’ll get nothing for him” philosophy. A season of a potential Cy Young pitcher might be worth more than what you can get for him in a trade with only one year of control left. I hope the Peralta trade doesn’t turn out the same way. If the Brewers ever want to be serious contenders for a World Series, they might have to think about keeping some proven talent instead of stockpiling prospects who will never be as valuable.
  19. This will be a day to give the bottom of the bullpen some innings.
  20. Sunday defense, in addition to the Sunday batting order is not looking like a winning formula.
  21. While the Nats position group may be improved, their pitching is dead last in MLB in runs allowed per game. Bad pitching is the main reason why they have lost 8 of their last 9 games against teams not wearing WISCO jerseys. The Brewers scoring only 10 runs in 3 games, all of which were the result of HRs, against those pitchers should be seen as a warning sign of a weak offense.
  22. As a point of fact, the Brewers have scored 3 or less in 6 games (and 2 or less in 5 games) and 4 of those games of 3 or less are in the last 5 games. They scored 29 of their 80 runs in the opening series against the White Sox. That Sox series is looking more like an outlier. I disagree with your opinion that the Brewers offense is doing great. Losing Yelich (who was a significant contributor) for an extended period is going to create more challenges. I will be really surprised if the Brewers are still 5th in R/G a month from now.
  23. The Nats had lost 7 of 8 coming into the weekend, and their biggest problem has been pitching. The Brewers getting shut down by them on Friday and Saturday, and scoring only on HRs for the whole weekend, says a lot about the sorry state of the offense. Those scrappy Nats are losing15-1 to the Pirates tonight.
  24. You’re letting yourself be misled by the outsized impact of the high scoring games., especially in the White Sox series. A really good offense does not have as many games scoring 0-2 runs as the Brewers have, especially in the last week. Hopefully the injured players can come back and revive the offense, but that looks to be at least a month away once you throw in rehab assignments.
  25. With Yelich now reportedly out for about a month, I am even more getting the feeling that this is going to be one of those years. The Brewers haven’t had one for quite awhile, so maybe they’re due The injuries are exposing how weak the depth is, both in the lineup and the starting rotation. Four more weeks of lineups with Regnifo second and Lockridge 6th is going to be hard to watch. And the way things are going there will be more injuries before Chourio, Vaughn, and Yelich get back and shake the rust off.
