  1. It's early, but he's hit in all six games he's played, hitting over .400 and of course a game winning HR. He's touted as a five tool player. No Pirate rook has hit in his first 6 since Clemente so Buc's fans are pretty exited. Mc Cutchen has been out of his mind with 8 srtaight multi-hit games with 11 xtra base hits! Some kind of other worldly 1.400+ OPS. in that span. Yet they don't seem to be making up any ground on the Central leader. Ditto the Reds in spite of being bolstered by returning casualties. I have to feel that at some point soon one of those teams will get on a roll. BTW, does anyone know who Polanco replaced?
  2. I was playing in a poker Tourney in San Diego, craning my neck to see the Knicks/Rockets NBA Finals on the TV overhead. I remember that my 1st thought was: Oh no...he really did it.
  3. Atlanta.. 35 31 .530 - Nats...... 35 31 .530 - Cards.... 35 32 .522 - Dodgers 36 33 .522 - Miami.... 34 32 .515 ½ Pirates.... 33 34 .493 2 Cincinnati 32 34 .485 2½ Colorado. 32 35 .478 3 Surprising to see Miami still in the thick of things. It looks like the Reds are making a run at it...won 3 straight and Votto, Latos are back, Chapman returning to form. Oscar Taveras' 2 week cup of coffee is over. Adams back, OT down to Memphis.
  4. 1989.... In a 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays at County Stadium, Robin Yount’s consecutive games streak ends. The Brewers center fielder establishes a new club record playing in 276 straight contests. http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2011/0503/mlb_g_yount_576.jpg 1949.... Ruth Ann Steinhagen shoots Eddie Waitkus in the chest with a rifle at Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel. The obsessed fan, who had become infatuated with the first baseman when he played with the Cubs, apparently is upset and agitated because the All-star infielder was traded to the Phillies. http://www.whenitwasagame.net/photos_bat_stories/waitkus_main2.jpg http://media.tumblr.com/2c9d62c8f4f41d75db304002691a79da/tumblr_inline_mkn4401osr1qzy8r9.jpg You have probably guessed that this incident was the inspiration for The Natural. This woman was truly creepy. She became obsessed with Eddie when he smiled at her from the field in a game she attended. She went so far as to procure his HS yearbook and note the name of a pretty classmate. Aware that ballplayers were besieged by women, she used the yearbook name to pique Eddie's interest. When he received the note in his hotel room he could not place the name but it was very familiar. It was his curiosity that prompted his visit to her room. Here's the NY Times story from 1949...http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/24/sports/baseball/ruth-ann-steinhagen-83-troubled-shooter-of-the-phillies-eddie-waitkus.html?_r=0
  5. I hate facing Homer. He's a .500 type pitcher that about once in every 3 or 4 starts Pitches a monster. I have no idea who I should be rooting for in this game. So I'll just sit back and let it wash over me.
  6. 1973....Dock Ellis walks a batter without ever throwing a pitch to him. After going 2-0 on the Atlanta left fielder Sonny Jackson, the Pirates right-hander is replaced by Ramon Hernandez, who throws two more balls to Dick Dietz, a pinch-hitter for Jackson, to complete the base-on-balls which is attributed to the Bucs' starting pitcher. This oddity is interesting but can't hold a candle to the most bizarre pitching performance EVER.... by his weirdness, Dock Ellis. If you haven't seen it, check out this short cartoon feature narrated by the Dock himself. "The long, strange trip of Dock Ellis" http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/22183121/the-bobblehead-project-dock-ellis-throws-a-no-hitter-on-lsd
  7. 2012....Matt Cain tosses the fifth no-hitter and second perfect game of the season when he retires 27 consecutive batters in the Giants' 10-0 rout of the Astros at AT&T Park. The San Francisco right-hander, with the help of two great defensive plays from outfielders Melky Cabrera and Gregor Blanco, becomes the first pitcher in the 129-year history of the franchise and the 22nd in major league history to accomplish the feat. Talk about baseball anomalies! Without any knee-jerk rule adjustments things just went back to normal in 2013 (and Cain returned to earth)
  8. 1948....With the crowd of 49,641 singing 'Auld Lang Syne' to the Babe, the Yankees celebrate the silver anniversary of Yankee Stadium by holding 'Babe Ruth Day'. With members of the 1923 team (the first team to play in the stadium) looking on, the dying superstar's uniform number 3 is retired and sent to Cooperstown. He carried the bat for support.
  9. Times like this ties my stomach in knots. Oooo! That was close call on strike 3
  10. Quite a performance by Kyle....I hope there's no extra innings.
  11. Many teams are struggling at the plate this year. I forget which, but one of the talking ESPN heads attributed it to the shift. I don't know that I buy that.
  12. I noticed that the Reds knocked off the Dodgers today and there's no score in the Cubs/Bucs game. But Edinson Volquez is dealing.
  13. The way he was charging in he must have thought he could get to it.
  14. To quote the late michael jackson... "you are not alone... I am here with you" So what you are saying is that MJ really is dead?
  15. ARam goes deeeep...Mets announcer said it was the 1st Brewer HR in over a week. That's hard to believe.
  16. Kind of a treat for me to get a rare MLBTV Brews telecast, and on an off night for the Cards and my boy Lohse on the mound. Um....am I alone here?
  17. Well, the medical report said no structural damage. The GM is calling it tennis elbow. Card fans know that you can't rely on the Med staff. They surely must have all graduated from the Haiti school of Medicinal Voodoo. So the Card's staff is that way too. Thornburg was just diagnosed with common wrist flexor irritation. I think that is code for amputation in 3 weeks. But I would pit our crummy Med Staff against your crummy Med staff any day of the week! The condition pictured here was originally diagnosed as "Excessive lying to the press-winking-eye"
  18. Yikes Hope it's nothing serious. The way thing are going this year you'd think there's a virus out there that attacks elbow tendons. Well, the medical report said no structural damage. The GM is calling it tennis elbow. Card fans know that you can't rely on the Med staff. They surely must have all graduated from the Haiti school of Medicinal Voodoo. It's pretty certain that Waino will miss a start or two. It's anybody's guess who will replace him. On Taveras: with the return of Matt Adams on Friday Oscar is toast and will return to memphis. Jon Jay has been hitting like a madman since OT came up. ( Tavares is at .197)
