  1. Carolina 4, Salem 3 Mudcats Edge Red Sox 4-3 in Salem Carolina earned a series tying 4-3 victory in Salem on Saturday night Devin Williams looks more likely to be released than added to the 40 man his last couple of performances. He threw only 26 strikes in 58 pitches and it looked worse than that. Hopefully, he isn't injured again. Nathan Kirby, on the other hand, went three scoreless innings in today's game. Luke Barker got the save (he leads the Carolina League in that stat with 17). Dallas Carroll and Robbie Rojas had two hit games. Devin Williams: 2 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K Nathan Kirby: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K Luke Barker: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K Dallas Carroll: 2-4 Robbie Rojas: 2-3 Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Mudcats take the lead: Carolina Top of the 6th Robie Rojas singles on a ground ball to center fielder Chris Madera. 2. Salem 11, Carolina 2 Mudcats Slammed 11-2 in Series Opener in Salem The Mudcats hit into a season worst six double plays in Friday's series opening loss Jorge Ortega couldn't make it out of the 3rd inning. Phil Bickford gave up three runs. Only Wuilder Rodriguez was effective but after the game was essentially over. Three Mudcats had two hits but the double plays killed them. 3. Carolina 5, Lynchburg 4 Mudcats Avoid Sweep with 5-4 Walk-Off Win Cooper Hummel scored the winning run in the ninth as Carolina earned its tenth walk-off victory Victor Diaz got the start and went 5 innings giving up three runs. Rodrigo Benoit, in his Carolina debut, struck out 6 in two innings while giving up one run. Cody Beckman worked the final two innings and picked up the win. Nathan Rodriguez reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by second baseman Tyler Friis. Cooper Hummel scores.
  4. Lynchburg 7, Carolina 6 Lynchburg 4, Carolina 3 Mudcats Swept In De Facto Doubleheader With Lynchburg Carolina lost a 5-0 lead in game one before falling in extras 7-6 and losing game two 4-3 The first game was the completion of a suspended game in Lynchburg. Since Carolina will not go to Lynchburg again this year, the game was completed in Zebulon. Braden Webb threw the first 5 innings on the earlier occasion in Lynchburg. The Mudcats held a three run lead with two outs in the bottom of the 9th when Mitch Longo launched a three run home run to tie the game. Daniel Brown's line doesn't look good but he pitched better than that. They tried to get a 4th inning out of him and he ran out of gas. I don't think he has gone that far in a game very often this year. Luke Barker gave up the home run and went the remainder of the game. It was only the third home run and third blown save of the year for Barker. The Mudcats took a lead in the 10th and it looked like they would win when Demi Orimoloye threw out a runner at home. The next two hitters singled however to tie the game again. Braden Webb: 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K Daniel Brown: 3 2/3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K Luke Barker: 2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K Weston Wilson: 2-3 (all on the earlier occasion) Carolina Box Score Game 1 Carolina Game 1 Log Alec Bettinger went 4 innings giving up all four runs in the regularly scheduled game. Three pitchers followed for the Mudcats and allowed no more runs but the Mudcats bats could not rally. Mario Feliciano and Ryan Aguilar had two hits each. Rob Henry continues his strange batting line with a hit and a walk. He now has a .432 OBP with Carolina in which he has drawn 30 walks and has only 18 hits. Alec Bettinger: 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 5 K Phil Bickford: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K Mario Feliciano: 2-4, 2B Ryan Aguilar: 2-4, 2B Carolina Game 2 Box Score Carolina Game 2 Log
  5. Carolina now going to the 11th in the suspended game with a delay now to repair the field. They will be lucky to get the regularly scheduled game in because the field is in poor shape.
  6. Wild game in Zebulon. Mudcats gave up a 3 run bomb with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. Now they lead again with Lynchburg pitching unable to throw a strike in a downpour. Too bad for Braden Webb. He could have had two wins in two days and ends up with nothing.
  7. Yes, it was on the broadcast. The Mudcats know the radar gun used at the stadium is high and they are planning to fix that. In the meantime, Webb did hit 102 while I was listening to the broadcast.
  8. Lynchburg 3, Carolina 2 Carolina Drops Series Opener 3-2 Despite Webb's Gem Braden Webb struck out eight over six scoreless innings on Monday night Braden Webb was the story in this game with one of his best efforts this year. It was his best game score. The only problem was the 93 pitches in 6 innings which necessitated that he come out after 6. Hopefully, the Mudcats will come up with one of those strikeout montages for this game. Alec Kenilvort gave up two runs in the 7th to tie the game but he should have been out of the inning. Dallas Carroll's 20th error with two outs prolonged the inning and resulted in the two tying runs scoring later on. Cody Beckman gave up the final run to take the loss. Cooper Hummel reached base in all four at bats, three on walks. Ryan Aguilar homered for the Mudcats. They will be coming out with an interview of Weston Wilson in the next couple of days in which he will discuss his injury (ankle) and his hot streak in July. Braden Webb: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K Alec Kenilvort: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K Cody Beckman: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K Mario Feliciano: 1-4, 2B Cooper Hummel: 1-1, 3 BB Ryan Aguilar: 1-4, HR Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log
  9. He hit 102 on the stadium gun in the 5th. That's probably 2-3 ticks too high but still impressive. It's about where Medeiros was last year on his best days.
  10. Weston Wilson Named Carolina League Player of the Month for July Hopefully, he will be back soon and continue to hit like this.
  11. Salem 7, Carolina 5 Orimoloye Hits Grand Slam in 7-5 Loss to Red Sox Carolina scored five runs in the ninth, but came up short in a 7-5 home loss to Salem The booming grand slam by Demi Orimoloye (video link in the game story) with two outs in the 9th was about the only saving grace in this game. After a pitching change by the Red Sox, Cooper Hummel grounded out for the final out. Neither Devin Williams or Nathan Kirby were very effective in the game. Phil Bickford threw a couple of shutout innings. Veteran minor leaguer, Josh Tobias, who has been in AA a couple of times hit two home runs for the Red Sox. He only had 19 in 1,300 minor league at bats coming into the game. Devin Williams: 2 1/3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 K Nathan Kirby: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K Phil Bickford: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K Demi Orimoloye: 2-5, Grand Slam Cooper Hummel: 2-5 Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Mudcats trailed 7-0 going into the bottom of the 9th: Carolina Bottom of the 9th Jagger Rusconi remains in the game as the center fielder. Pitching Change: Joan Martinez replaces Kevin McAvoy. Ryan Aguilar walks. Rob Henry called out on strikes. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Robie Rojas replaces Pat McInerney. Robie Rojas walks. Ryan Aguilar to 2nd. Trever Morrison strikes out swinging. Devin Hairston singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Scott. Ryan Aguilar scores. Robie Rojas to 2nd. With Mario Feliciano batting, wild pitch by Joan Martinez, Robie Rojas to 3rd. Devin Hairston to 2nd. Mario Feliciano walks. Demi Orimoloye hits a grand slam (3) to left field. Robie Rojas scores. Devin Hairston scores. Mario Feliciano scores. Pitching Change: Algenis Martinez replaces Joan Martinez. Cooper Hummel grounds out, first baseman Jerry Downs to pitcher Algenis Martinez.
  12. Carolina 3, Salem 2 Salem 3, Carolina 0 Henry Hammers Walk-Off Hit in Game One as Mudcats Split Doubleheader With Salem Rob Henry and Cooper Hummel each reached base 4 times in game one with Henry delivering the game winner in extra innings. Conor Harber worked 5 innings and struck out 7. Daniel Brown and Luke Barker worked a scoreless final 3 innings. In the nightcap, Darwinzon Hernandez struck out the first 6 Mudcats before he was touched for a single by Ryan Aguilar. Aguilar later doubled high off the wall in right field but the Mudcats could only manage one other hit. Jorge Ortega worked 4 innings and took the loss. Conor Harber: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K Daniel Brown: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K Luke Barker: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K Cooper Hummel: 3-3, 2B, BB Rob Henry: 2-2, 2B, 2 BB Carolina Box Score Game 1 Carolina Game 1 Log Carolina Bottom of the 8th Pat McInerney starts inning at 2nd base. 21. As we know, Sunday's game did not go well for Alec Bettinger but here's a write-up before the game by a local paper: Hylton graduate Alec Bettinger to pitch in front of hometown crowd Sunday at Pftizner Stadium
  22. Potomac 10, Carolina 1 Mudcats Swept After 10-1 Loss in Potomac Alec Bettinger allowed eight runs and nine hits in Sunday's series finale loss Alec Bettinger went to Hylton High School which is only 5-10 minutes from the P-Nats park. He must have had a lot of friends and family at this game--unfortunately. Not much went right in this series for the Mudcats. From the game notes we learn that Weston Wilson, who has played all of the infield postions plus LF and RF this year, has only 4 errors on the year. He did not play today. Alec Bettinger: 1 1/3 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 0 BB, 2 K Alec Kenilvort: 3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K Dustin Houle: 2-4, 2B Mario Feliciano: 1-3, 2B, BB Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log

Weston Wilson doubled in his one at bat before leaving with an injury. Nick Roscetti had a couple of hits. Braden Webb: 2 2/3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 3 K Daniel Brown: 2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K Phil Bickford: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K Weston Wilson: 1-1, 2B Mario Feliciano: 4-5 Nick Roscetti: 2-4 Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log
