  1. However, paying Carter $8 mil vs. paying him $5 mil vs. paying a group of other schmucks $3 mil isn't going to move the needle anywhere else within the organization. Or you could just not spend $3mil on schmucks. That would likely pay for a decent chunk of the Mudcats or can be invested into something else to create future income. For instance this year all that saved money went to the concession stand revamp. Doesn't seems like a big deal, but it should increase sales/revenue so payroll in the future can be higher when we are competing.
  2. But I am: Garza=$12.5 Mil Parra=$20mil So right off the bat it is costing me $7.5mil to get a player who according to BR.com was worth -2.8 WAR. It would probably cost even more than that because I bet we could trade Garza away and not pay the entire salary. So probably about $10mil+. All that for an OFer who is 10x worse than any current OFer we have and we have nowhere to put him either. This is actually pretty weird since usually you are trying to compete, but with this move it sounds like you want to tank Briggs.
  3. So spend money just because we can and have no other use for it(which isn't true)? There is a reason Attanasio has millions and that is not why. You don't spend money just to spend it. That's not how a business is ran. To the person who thinks Carter bounced back that is not true. Teams are pretty smart these days and would take one peak at his home/road splits and know he isn't any better. The increase in SLG(only thing that notably improved) is a direct product of Miller Park. WAR can only take you so far. Teams flat out don't want a guy who strikes out in 33% of his at-bats, can't make contact, can't field, struggles to hit over .200, is streaky, and can't do anything decent outside of hit some homers. It's not valuable and that's why we picked him up for $2.5mil, still had him past the trade deadline, and why two teams went with Jaso/Alvarez over him for more money.
  4. So are you saying we overpaid at $2.5mil last winter? There is nothing different one year later. How has his value tripled? Khris Davis is not Chris Carter bad. Outside of hitting homers Chris Carter is complete garbage. As I mentioned here or in a different thread minus the HRs he pretty much is the worst at everything else when it comes to first baseman and in some cases he is just the flat out worst in baseball. Not saying they shouldn't retain him, but tendering him a contract for $8mil is wasted money. Not to mention it would make him worth nothing on the trade market. Non tender him and sign him to a different deal. It is that simple. If some one pays him more than what tendering his contract would have costed us jokes on them and we lose nothing.
  5. First thing John Jaso got $8mil over 2 years not one year...big difference. Just throwing that out there so people don't think he got all that money in one year. Pedro Alvarez got money because he had a ton of helium surrounding him. He was at one point a Top 5 prospect in all of baseball. Then he did well in 2013 making the AS Game and winning the Silver Slugger. That being said I think he is the best comp for Carter. Look at the O's though. They had the chance to get Alvarez or Carter and they went with Alvarez for their DH spot. Id think they are comparable, but then again we have an example where a team wanted Alvarez more and Carter got less than half of what Alvarez got. The Pirates also took John Jaso over Chris Carter. Id think the $5.75mil Alvarez got is the ceiling for Carter on the open market. People can keep thinking Chris Carter should demand Alvarez/Jaso money, but a year ago that was not the case and little has changed for any of the three players. Tendering Chris Carter a contract is flushing money down the toilet. If you want him non tender him and win the small bidding war that will be about as intense as bingo in a nursing home.
  6. One win on the open market is worth roughly $8 million. I realize WAR is not everything, but if using that as a standard, Carter would be get about $8 million if he were a free agent. Last year, he produced only .4 WAR and got $2.5 million. Pedro Alvarez, while left handed, got $5.75 million last year after producing just .2 WAR in 2014 & 2015 COMBINED. I think it safe to assume Carter would get more than that this year. Yah I will pass on the whole "1 WAR is worth this" stuff. Don't know about you, but I don't think Scooter Gennett is getting $8mil on the open market. Also don't think Khris Davis is going to go out and nab $24mil a year. Ryan Braun would also be a total bargain(worth $36mil), but that also hasn't come to fruition.
  7. Give up the NL HR leader for nothing!? Payroll isn't a critical issue, and even if it were, 8M for a 40+ hr guy is a tradable contract. Non-tendering Nieuwenhuis makes sense. He's not that good, and not trade bait. Is that really a contract we can trade? The Houston Astros tried to trade a 40HR+ hitter last winter who was projected to make $5.6mil in 2016. He is very comparable to Chris Carter and got non tendered. Actually you know what, it was Chris Carter. $8mil is overpaying...he was no better last year than his entire career. Last year he warranted $2.5mil, but now he is going to be worth $8mil and be tradable? Seems unlikely to say the least. He has great home run power. Ignore the horrid defense(Fangraphs has him at 13th worst in baseball), 2nd worst K% in baseball 1% behind the worst, 200 strikeouts, 4th worst average in baseball, 18 GDPs, 17/23 in doubles for 1B, Lowest AVG for 1B, Last place in singles for 1B, 21/23 in total hits for a 1B, Last place for contact % for 1B(last in baseball), #1 in swinging strikes for 1B. He hit 41 HRs though. Why tender an $8mil contract to someone that isn't likely to get anywhere near that on the open market? Just non tender him and be the highest bidder. I assure you the bidding won't get to $8mil. Actually I would be pretty comfortable saying it would stay under $5mil.
  8. Why not just non tender Carter and sign him on the open market? Not like there is a downside if he signs elsewhere realistically.
  9. Except they are outfielders where power is harder to get there. Chris Carter was 8/23 for qualified 1B in the SLG department. On the other hand Davis/Trumbo sat at 9/54 for qualified OFers in the SLG department. This means for SLG: 35% of 1B were better than Carter 17% of OFers were better than Davis/Trumbo Also: 16/23 or 69% of 1B had at least slugged .460 24/54 or 44% of OFers had at least slugged .460 So it is easy to come to the conclusion that Trumbo>Carter by a sizable margin and if Trumbo only got a 4A catcher what does that tell you about what Carter would likely get in return?
  10. It's marketing $$$$$$. Hoodies are fairly affordable to most people and they can buy what the players wear. Making them jackets would make them too expensive for most fans thus less money in their pockets. So don't plan on it.
  11. I am talking about his trade value. Not his value to the Brewers which is probably different with a low payroll and no better options. They will likely tender him a contract over what he would get as a FA. I think they tender him a contract, but trade value? I'd strongly guess it doesn't exist at his price tag.
  12. Right and people are trying to say Carter has trade value and that seems pretty questionable. He isn't any more special now.
  13. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/astros-to-non-tender-chris-carter.html $5.6mil Non tendered because no one would then trade for him at that price.
  14. It was out of line less than 365 days ago. Carter was set to earn approx. $5.6mil last year and the Astros non tendered him.
  15. Their stadium is interesting to say the least. There is little field level seating instead it is raise up a bit. Not sure who designed that, but it doesn't make much sense.
  16. Braun's list of teams he would be traded to are either close to home(California etc.) or Miami since he played college ball there. Rays probably were in there just because they would never trade for him and I think the year the Nats were on there it would make no sense for them to trade for him. As for Canada...not going to happen. I highly doubt he wants his kid(s) going to school in a different country. Even if it is only Pre-K or Kindergarten. Not to mention it would make quite a hassle for his family to come or go.
  17. Nor is: Tyler Cravy Damien Magnifico Yadiel Rivera Michael Reed Brent Suter Anthony Banda What people get caught up on is: 1) Lack of developing elite starter(s) 2) So many busts with our top picks Overall I don't think we have done that bad, but its sad we are failing some much with our top picks. It should be easier to get solid contributors with those picks instead we are getting a bunch of guys that can't even make an MLB roster. Now as far as #1 goes I am a lot more forgiving. We don't typically pick very high and it is very hard to actually get elite pitching, get it to stay healthy, and to have it perform at the MLB level. So yes we haven't done that bad, but doing ok is not going to get the Brewers anywhere. We are a smaller market and having good/great drafts is how we build a winner. We did that in the 2000s and it gave us two really good teams. If we aren't excelling in the draft it is going to make it hard to make a winner and even harder to sustain that success once we get there.
  18. Biggest problem with Gennett is the fact he can only play 2nd base so having him as a bench bat probably isn't worth it. Unless a team wants him as a starter we might get virtually nothing.
  19. Villar to 2nd, Gennett traded/non tendered, and a 3B acquired though trade/FA. I do not see an scenario they let Perez start the year at 3B. It's pretty obvious what Perez is at this point and he should stay in that role. Wouldn't be surprised if that player comes via trade similar to picking up Broxton.
  20. They will tender Carter a contract. Unless they are envisioning some type of better replacement it isn't that hard of a decision(which seems unlikely). He wouldn't get a big raise and he brings some excitement to the ball club.
  21. At least the people of SE United States can move inland. The people of Haiti could only sit there and pray they could survive in their weak structures.
  22. Exactly I don't find this to be much of a concern in the long term. Id prefer a RH heavy batting order anyway. While having some lefties in the line-up is good too many or too many of your big time bats being lefty can create problems really fast. If we went into a playoffs series and had to face Bumgarner or Sale twice that isn't going to look great if 3/5 of our top hitters are lefties.
  23. If we were competing...maybe. I think he is too expensive for the current state of the ballclub.
  24. I found conflicting information, but this one has nice graphs that tell the general story. The Brewers do not have super cheap beer. It is middle of the pack with the majority of teams. I'd say 20 teams have virtually the same cost while their are approx. 5 outliers above and below. http://vinepair.com/wine-blog/ranked-price-beer-mlb-stadiums-2016/
  25. 1. Lewis Brinson- Our two top prospects are both future gold glovers. However, one is a 5-tool player and the potential to be a 30-30 player in a time that features virtually none. Welcome to the top spot Brinson. +0 2. Josh Hader- I am sticking him over Ortiz because he is a more sure thing and closer to the MLB. I don't think he will be the TOR guy some are dreaming of, but he could be a mid-rotation guy or at worst an electric reliever. +1 3. Luis Ortiz- I think he has a higher ceiling than Hader, but there are health concerns and he is farther off. Nastiest stuff in the organization. +1 4. Isan Diaz- This kid is legit and putting up great stats at Single-A. The power is there and the OBP skills are there too. Can't wait to watch him climb the ladder and the rankings. He may have to move to 2B, but his bat will play there just fine.+3 5. Corey Ray- I know a lot of people weren't happy with drafting him, but he has all the tools to be a great above average OFer. He has started out slow, but I am not concerned yet. +1 6. Phil Bickford- What a player to get for Will Smith. Bickford could end up as mid-rotation starter or at worst a top of the line reliever. He is going to be a force one way or the other. -1 7. Brandon Woodruff- Woodruff has a solid arsenal with three above average offerings. He seems like a safe bet to be a #3 starter and for that reason he will be in the Top 10 prospects. He lacks the ceiling I would prefer in a Top 5 organizational prospect though. +14 8. Trent Clark- I love the hit tool and even more so with his great OBP skills he has shown. He is going to figure it out and break out soon enough. +0 9. Brett Phillips- Phillips is a hard one to figure out. The second he came over to Milwaukee his K% spiked nearly double, but on the other hand his BB% went up too. He has the tools to be very good hopefully it will come together. +0 10. Lucas Erceg- Lucas Erceg looked pretty comfortable and showed a lot more power than one would think. He has room to build onto his frame and have legit power. That being said he was a college bat doing well at A-ball. Wont put him higher till he continues at A+ and AA. +5 11. Marcos Diplan -1 12. Cody Ponce -1 13. Freddy Peralta -1 14. Nathan Kirby -1 15. Monte Harrison -1 16. Kodi Medeiros +1 17. Jorge Lopez -1 18. Corbin Burnes -1 19. Jake Gatewood -1 20. Ryan Cordell NEW! 21. Jacob Nottingham +2 22. Devin Williams +2 23. Gilbert Lara -1 24. Mario Feliciano NEW! 25. Tyrone Taylor +0 26. Wei-Chung Wang +4 27. Chad McClanahan +0 28. Brent Suter +0 29. Michael Reed NEW! 30. Devin Williams -6
