  1. So we're going to have a problem on our hands soon, especially if Stearns continues to stick with the current group of relievers. We've got two relievers in Barnes and Knebel that are on pace for around 80+ innings this season (Torres is too but that doesn't really matter as I don't think there's any way he's part of future plans). When exactly will the shutdown date be for these two? You can say that we'll probably not need them much if we fall out of it but I don't know if that's really going to happen any time soon with the softer schedule coming up. We just can't really afford to stick with all these ineffective relievers in our pen. Even if the game isn't blown you get what happened two days ago, five run lead in the 9th and you have to pull Torres and use Knebel. Part of why having starters pitch shorter outings can be effective is using the bullpen effectively, but with this bullpen we struggle to find anyone who can cover multiple innings and this leads to games like today where nearly the whole pen has to pitch. A pitcher like Feliz who is basically your 7th or 8th man in the pen absolutely needs to be replaced by someone who can go multiple innings. Same goes for Hughes or Drake. Torres could use a break given his heavy workload last year and this year and will soon be on the DL at the rate he's going. Even Barnes should probably be sent down soon, not to pitch but to limit innings. The point is I'm not kidding when I say we need five new arms in our pen. It is becoming a necessity, not to compete, but to survive the season.
  2. It's 2012 all over again, the whole pen basically needs to be cycled out. Once they finally did that in 2012 the team got hot and nearly came all the way back. When it comes to bullpen arms there should be an incredibly short leash, especially for waiver claim veterans.
  3. Drake is essentially a lefty specialist with righties posting a .468 wOBA against him so far this year. He cannot be counted on to pitch full innings. Hughes has command problems and with his minuscule strikeout rate will never really be above replacement level. Torres has a FIP of 4.58 and xFIP of 4.99 through 30.1 innings this season Feliz has absolutely no command of any off speed pitch and this has lead to an abysmal season. Time to cut their losses and move on. Wang and Cravy definitely have faults but both are better options than what we have currently. "Blazek cannot succeed at the MLB level with a double digit walk rate." But Drake and Hughes can?
  4. Its 2012 all over again. Need to replace nearly everyone in the pen.
  5. This is the old fashioned way of dealing with a bad pen.
  6. Jenkins came close once, he was a grand slam away and actually came to the plate with the bases loaded.

  8. So let Wang, Cravy, Blazek, Suter, sit in the minors while Hughes, Drake, Feliz, Torres keep giving up boatloads of runs in the majors? What purpose does that serve for the now or the future? None of those guys possess a quality MLB arsenal or impressive secondary metrics that would predict they would be better than what we currently have or are any kind of longterm asset. You vastly over estimate how difficult it is to be better than what we currently have.

  10. I was listening on the radio and didn't really watch much today, you guys weren't kidding about the crazy tight strikezone, I'm looking at the WPA graph on fangraphs right now and to the right they have the strikezone with all the pitches, apparently ball one from Scahill to Posey was almost right down the middle, there were other ones too. What the hell?!? http://www.fangraphs.com/livewins.aspx?date=2017-06-05&team=Brewers&dh=0&season=2017
  11. Closers role is overrated until your closer isn't available and you need to trust the 9th inning to a random reliever. That's cost us twice this year, yesterday with Torres and earlier this year with Drake in extras. The key is to have lots of good relievers so you can have good relievers come into tough situations and get strikeouts. If Feliz could have been the player we thought he could be, Knebal would be an excellent stopper.
  12. Magic number down to 106 with the win today, 1.5 game lead over the Cubs and 2 games up on the Cardinals heading into their game tonight.
  13. Been a little while since any roster moves have been made. We've got pleny of aaa arms and five guys in the pen who could be dfa tomorrow and it wouldny hurt.
  14. I guess they could have gone with Drake or Wily or Scahill but at some point in a 12 inning game your best options are used up, no guarantee of different results. They had good chances to get some insurance and blew it. Arcia leads off the 8th with a double and the next 3 guys fan. Then Villar is on 3rd with 1 out in the 12th and Arcia stands there and watches strike 3. At some point it's on the offense for not coming up in key situations. They had chances. Sooner or later a tie isn't going to hold up. Its getting annoying how bad these guys are in extras. I mean look at the swings some of them were taking, especially Aguliar. Everyone trying to hit a homer. It's part of what you get when you have a young team with a lot of guys with little experience.
  15. Not to sidetrack the conversation, but have you ever lived anywhere in which the manager WASN'T the main problem when things were going bad for a team? So far the only place for me is Chicago....and there have been complaints this year(not many, but some). Every fan base at some point thinks it's all on their manager. The worst I can recall was LaRussa the year the Cards won the WS(I think they won) after winning the division with 82 wins....maybe 83. I have a buddy who is from St. Louis and he talks about how on Cardinals forums he goes on that the fans constantly bash on Matheny like he's a complete bumbling idiot. It's just how so many fans roll. Baseball managers have the least impact of the pro sports, but when things go bad, way to often the managers get ripped as if they are a big reason why. Talent wins in baseball, just look at Ned Yost who made back to back World Series appearances. As for the runner on third/less than outs situation, because it stings when failure happens to the team fans cheer for and it feels good when the other team fails, it makes those fans feel like that failure happens so much more than other teams. So the times say a guy K's in that spot, especially in a close game, the frustration over that sticks in the brain more than being happy when a guy hits a sac fly. I'm guilty of it. Out flies a barrage of swearing, regardless if the other team may have done the same thing an inning prior. While I agree about what you said about managers, the numbers are pretty clear that the brewers have struggled getting the runner in from third with less than two outs.
  16. As bad of loss as today was there are positives, nelson is rolling right now and really we have three starters pitching very well right now. Magic number down to 108 with the Cardinal loss. Hopefully we can chalk today up to just kershaw doing what he does.
  17. Really? Knebel has been lights out for 2 months straight, and blows one save and you want to ditch him as the closer? That's kind of a knee jerk reaction, isn't it? He shouldn't be removed as closer but it's not just one save. He is 4 of 7 in his opportunities. He's not really 4 of 7. He's 15 of 18 because of his 11 holds. Two of his three blown saves were one run games, today against the 2,3,4 hitters. The other was when je was thrown in a near impossible situation.
  18. runner at 3rd, less than two outs, take strike three down the middle
  19. Everyone trying to play hero ball and hit a homer. I understand the struggles against Kershaw, but the last three innings have been pathetic.
  20. Here it is hit it. 92 right down the middle is all it takes to get whiffs right now.
  21. Yeah except he was the setup man for most of the year and has 11 holds. Considering a blown save counts the same whether its a hold or a save he's going for he's 15/18
