It isn't. Fowler, Chapman & Ross are gone. Russell has been out. Other players are having subpar seasons. Zobrist looks done, the pitching isn't the same either Davis is actually doing better than Chapman so that's not a reason. Fowler was definitely a loss. Russell is hurt but he wasn't doing good even when he was there. Zobrist is definitely done. But on the flip side, they've gotten increased production from Contreras and Heyward.
Sure, mathematically not. Realistically, I'll stand by what I said that they need to sweep now to make this a race again. 2 of 3 and then you still need 3 of 4 in the next series which is a big ask, and then that still leaves you with 2 games to make up just to tie, and there just isn't a lot of ground to be made up against the soft remaining schedule for the Cubs. If they come out of this series down 4, the Cubs still have 6 games left on this homestand including 3 against the Mets...I just don't see them continuing to hang around in the division race in that scenario. Without Nelson, pretty much over for us at this point. Even if we snuck in somehow, we don't go anywhere without Jimmy.
I've long been a fan of traditional BB, but I think its time for the DH... Just too much specialization in the game anymore. That and Ryan Braun as a DH is probably a benefit for the next 3 years. So we lose Nelson and suddenly we should go to the DH huh? lol
I'm not saying that a Wild Card can't win. It's happened before. Just that this year's Card team isn't very good. They aren't winning the Series, much less getting there. The 2011 team you referenced was actually a pretty decent game. If I recall correctly, they finished nearly 20 games over .500. There are no similarities between that team and this team except that both teams might be the WC.
There is no chance in hell STL is winning the WS this year. There are a handful teams with some serious horsepower that will completely shut down the Cards.
The Brewers, 0.5 games out of the Wild Card, just drew sub 18k last Thursday. So, yeah. We don't really care either. Excuse me, last Thursday, Aug. 31, attendance was 26,384. In fairness, isn't capacity roughly 42k? 26k isn't exactly awesome.
That's pretty much nightmare scenario though. If we have to use Davies/Nelson in Game 162, and then using the other in the 1 game playoff. And then using someone else for G1 in a series against the Dodgers. That would be very, very bad for us.
