  1. It's not an issue that Walker wears 15, it's an issue that the Brewers won't issue 17. I get it. Gantner's from Wisconsin. Still, on those Brewers teams? He's probably the sixth or seventh-best starting player depending on the season. (And was a reserve in the late 70s when the Brewers emerged.)
  2. It's silly and historically stupid. Cecil Cooper was, by several factors, a better player than Jim Gantner was. I mean, I love 'em both, grew up in the late 70s/80s, etc., but if the Brewers issue 15 they ought to issue 17. Has any media outlet every written about why this is?
  3. I'd like to know from the "sellers" whom exactly the Brewers have to sell that would bring much in return? Braun's contract is an albatross, he's injury-prone and basically unsellable. Garza isn't valuable to anyone. Villar might have been valuable if he'd hit this year, but he hasn't. Everyone else is either controllable, has their future ahead of them or isn't good enough to merit the effort. Where's the magic sellable bullet I'm missing? I'm not pleased Stearns waited this long to add a (middling) piece, but I don't get this "we should sell" vibe either.
  4. Bases were empty with one out when Baylor hit. Doug DeCinces hit a single after Edwards' catch.
  5. I was 11 years old, sitting in the lower grandstands on the first base side for Game 5 of the ALCS. The Brewers had taken the lead in the 7th and Don Baylor comes up in the 8th. Among many other Angels, he was a problem at the plate. He gets a hold of one and I'll never forget watching the parabola of his sky-high shot to left-center, thinking to myself, "Crap, this game is about to be tied again after that nice comeback." Of course, it didn't go out and Marshall Edwards made a leaping catch at the wall to save extra bases. And while my Wauwatosa friends and I used to dive into bushes for a few years afterwards to imitate it (we called wall-scrapping catches "a Marshall Edwards", just as we called blocked shots in the driveway "a Harvey Catchings", or later, "an Alton Lister), I never shook the feeling that the Brewers dodged a giant-Don Baylor-sized bullet. RIP to a really good hitter, and by almost all accounts, a very good man.
  6. Having met Gantner, I'd be surprised if he cared whether Hader wore 17 or not.
  7. I could harp on the crap hitting, but I'd rather marvel, right now, at the fantastic pitching.
  8. Hitting is so bad, it's forcing pitchers to be superhuman. It's amazing that they're actually achieving that level of performance.
  9. Was watching the game tonight (sadly I live in Cardinals territory so it was their broadcast) and you can't unsee this guy once you've read the story. He's in the background whenever a left-handed batter is up. And he was wearing a Brewer jacket. Thought he didn't wear team gear?
  10. I'm as big a Brewer fan as they come. I live vicariously through their games from afar, dreaming of the days when I lived in Milwaukee and could go to games whenever I wanted. If I ever move back to Milwaukee, I would budget to get a ticket package of some sort. And I think this dude's a humorless clown who needs to get a life.
