  1. Wow, I didn't realize that so many "fans" believed that the Brewers were such one man team. To sit here and feel sorry for ourselves is a defeatist attitude. Bush is no Gallardo obviously, but he did pitch well enough to win 12 games last season, and right now he is the best option. It doesn't mean Melvin won't be working on other options.
  2. "I can't wait for the ultimate enhancement. The one where people show up to Miller Park in October and lo and behold there's a baseball game going on. - gypcasino" This already happened in 2001 due to 9/11 games being postponed.
  3. Yes, it was a Cubs lovefest all around the BBTN panel. Stating that they have better starting pitching, proven leaders on the field, Kerry Wood looks great as a closer, and Pinialla in the dugout. Could run away with the division. There was also plenty of praise for Cincinnati. Eric Young gushed over the Reds now that Dusty Baker is in charge, noting they have 2 great starters, good young arms following them, and a closer who will seal the deal. He indicated that everwhere Dusty has been he's had a superstar who has performed well (Bonds, Lee) so he predicts a huge year for Griffey Jr. Ravitch almost sheepishly brought up the Brewers as being part of the contender mix but, if I recall correctly, Kruk said that the Brewers need Sheets to get 30-32 starts to have any chance because the rest of their starting guys (pitchers) are nothing to get excited about. The prevailing opinions were 1. - Cubs, 2- Reds, 3- Brewers, 4-6 take your pick of Astros, Cards, Pirates
  4. Honorable mention: Tommy Harper - 30/30 with a last place team. George Scott - The first credible long ball threat who had several decent seasons with his bat and was a gold glover on defense. George Bamberger - Brought a winning attitude from Baltimore, and had success (the first time around) on the field. Ken Sanders - 30 saves when saves were multiple innings.
  5. Wouldn't you just hate to hear this? The Chicago Cubs signed free agent Prince Fielder to replace the recently retired Derek Lee.
  6. Absolutely hate the DH. Pitchers can throw at opposing hitters without having to bat themselves. To me the DH has rendered all offensive records amassed by players who have used the position meaningless when compared to non-DH years. How many more HR's would Babe Ruth have hit? What about Mickey Mantle and his bad knees? Do you think Paul Molitor gets 3,000 hits without the benefit of the DH? Playing in the field does have some effect on batting and possible longevity. Imagine playing LF during a 90 degree sunny afternoon chasing balls down, running into fences, making throws to try and cut down baserunners for 27 outs. Compare that with likely 4 plate appearances and between them retreating to the air conditioned clubhouse to watch replays of your last at bat and then taking swings in the cages. Vote NO on the DH.
  7. I wish they had played Tampa Bay here. It's the only team in MLB that I have never seen play in person.
  8. In a scene from the movie Rain Man the waitress at the diner where they had pancakes drops most of a box of 250 toothpicks to the floor. Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffmann) looks at them on the floor and says "82, 82, 82," as 246 toothpicks lay on the floor.
  9. Well, in the appearances referenced he faced TOR, BAL, DET, TEX (7K's) BOS (1 Run), OAK, CHW. Only 2 teams in contention , and 3 with winning records.
  10. It's much easier to pitch for the "out of the race in May Devil Rays" in August/September than in the middle of a division race in July/August.
  11. Rock bottom for this year will be Sunday September 30 at about 4:00 PM. End of season, end of year. Remaining road series in Chicago, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Houston yet to be played. Their road record speaks for itself. Then look at the least week and 1/2 of the season. 4 in Atlanta, 3 at home vs. St. Louis, and 4 at home vs. San Diego. I cannot see the Brewers doing well in any of those series. I keep hearing people (Jim Powell) keep say they can't play any worse than they have been for the past month or so. I ask, why not? They are fully capable of a 10-22 finish which brings us back to 9/30/07 at 4:00 PM.
  12. I hope it rains hard enough all weekend that these two teams have to play games (possibly doubleheaders) on their otherwise scheduled days off.
  13. "If you are going to one of these Cards games, watch Duncan take BP, though. He has the most power I have ever witnessed" Watch Albert Pujols. I have witnessed his BP and he hit them as far as Sosa did during the HR derby in Milwaukee. Yes, completely out of the park (through the open panels).
  14. This Sunday Rickie Weeks will join Bob Wickman and Jeffrey Leonard as players having a giveaway when no longer on the active Brewers roster.
  15. The mentioning of 1908, 1969, and Bartman is really irrelevant. What matters is what is happening this season. The ONLY way to shut up Cubs fans is for the Brewers to consistently defeat them. That does not appear to be the case this year, so I'm sorry to say that until the team can turn it around, the home fans and team will have to put up with the abuse heaped upon them.
  16. I was at the game on Sunday, and a guy 2 rows behind me was berating Yost for putting in such a feable lineup on a Sunday when there were 42,000 in the stands. He went on and on about it, noting that he knows there are big crowds on weekends so why is Hardy sitting. You know I had never heard of that rule whereby the lineup strength is directly related to the anticipated attendance. I also learned that Gross should be in AAA. Graffanino (who won the game the night before) is pathetic, Counsell is washed up, Suppan is a bust, and Damian Miller should be playing every day by virtue of the fact he was hitting over .300. He is either a fake fan or one who judges baseball teams with a football outlook.
  17. There is no relavence comparing records with American League teams as the overwhealming majority of their games are not against common opponents, and then there is the DH which can be a big differentiation when comparing teams. What matters is that they are 8.5 behind St.Louis, 4.5 behind LA, 3.5 behind Cincinnati and 2.5 behind Atlanta after 50+ games. Those are the 2nd place teams in the NL divisions, along with the Cardinals 1st in the Brewers division. What matters is that the overall trend during the last 50 games has been playing losing baseball, and that they have been exposed as pretenders by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  18. Apparently no one has consulted today's edition of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about tonight's game. What: Brewers vs. Rockies (45-75) When: 8 Tonight Where: Miller Park Once again no clue about baseball in this newspaper. I recently spoke to an elderly journalist about the sad state of the local "newspaper". He notices factual errors in sports articles just about each week. When he calls the editor, he is told that he is probably the only one who noticed this and that they have no interest in correcting it as they have moved on. His conclusion is that the Journal Sentinel is in business to sell advertising to help promote their political viewpoints. Accuracy be dammed. Sports except for Green bay coverage (curoius: Green Bay coverage for a Milwaukee paper) is more of an irriitation as most of their readers get sports off of the internet. Even the morning show at WISN radio is catching this. Today I listened as the guy read the following: "The Brewers beat the Rockies last night 6-4 in Colorado. Wes Helms homered and Victor Santos picked up his 4th victory of the season. The two teams play tonight at Miller Park." Just incredible I turned it off immediately.
  19. I would not bet against a streak. These guys are playing so tight right now that you couldn't pull a pin out of their collective posteriors with a tractor.
  20. Looks like the free webcasts are not available today for the Brewers. The log in screen appears when it did not yesterday. Yes, I selected the MIL link and not the SD or SEA link. If I'm wrong please help me out there.
