I recently read an article about Major League umpires and that the younger guys consistently grade out better on calling balls and strikes and I'm sure it's somewhat due to vision and reflexes that diminish with age. This guy must be old, then. At least he’s consistently bad and doesn’t favor either team. I genuinely wonder why MLB doesn’t have a smaller group of umpires to call home plate versus other positions. Grade out their performances, let the ones who are good at it continue, and pay them a bit more for each home plate assignment. I’m sure there are enough good ones to keep too much strain off everyone’s knees. Or just let the robots take over.
