  1. After watching him last year, suggesting that Villar is not a great defender isn't hating on him, it's just pointing out something that seems pretty obvious. I'm very glad we got him, and think he is an upgrade over Gennett. He just hasn't been a very good defender, and I hope he can improve on that. If he does, then he will be a very good player.
  2. Good. I'm not a fan of 13-man pitching staffs.
  3. It is too short a time to judge, but it could be argued that his bad defense cost the Brewers both of those games. He has the tools, but after watching him last year, he doesn't appear to be a good defensive player. Hopefully he can settle in and become an average defensive 2B, and hopefully his offense stays around the 2016 levels. If both of those happen, he's a very valuable player.
  4. Aren't you a Brewers fan? Can't be the first time. This would be a good spot for that picture of Yuni that occasionally gets inserted into BF.net threads :-)
  5. Which means it could be longer by the time he stretches out, a few minor league starts, etc. Honestly, at this point may as well bring up Lopez. He's not getting any younger, and they have a plan for Hader. I don't know if I can handle a few starts by Milone, then a few by Jungmann, etc. None of those guys will be a starter long term for the Brewers, so just bring up Lopez and find out this year if he can hang, or not. Not a bad idea. He got good experience against MLB talent in the WBC this spring.
  6. Why would one start make Hader a Super 2? Unless there was a significant change in the new CBA that I missed you need a lot more service time than that. You're right. My mind blanked and I was thinking that it was based on initial call-up date, but it's not. It's based on service time for the season, so it would just mean that they'd probably wait a little longer into the season to call him up for good.
  7. Since Milone just pitched a couple of innings yesterday, it might make sense just to let him rest and start on Saturday, and the fresh-armed Suter can pitch in relief.
  8. Suter called up. Looks like either he or Milone will get the start, with the other acting as LH reliever.
  9. They can at least bring up an extra bat until that spot in the rotation comes up then replace him with Hader to start, not Milone. Wren fits that role perfectly. Not only is he LH, he's a contact guy on a team starved for them. They probably won't bring Hader up for one start, as I think that would make him a Super 2 player. If Guerra was lost for a long period then they might, but I'd guess they'll just suffer through a Milone start and then put either Garza or Guerra into the rotation if one of them is ready. Your scenario to get another bat on the bench could work if they decide to let Jungmann get the start. There's no harm in calling him up for one start, and they wouldn't need to add him until after Friday's game. That might not be a bad option.
  10. The decision to go with 13 pitchers and a four-man bench is more at issue than whether one or two of those four are LH hitters. As long as we feel the need to have the extra arm, we will be limited on our bench. With Milone the likely guy to take Guerra's rotation spot, we will probably need to keep the extra arm in the pen. I'd guess that Cravy will be the likely call-up since he's on the 40-man. Also, this makes the decision to put Garza on the 10-day DL rather than cutting him look a lot better. Hopefully Milone will only get one start and then Garza will be ready to step into the rotation. More than anything though, I hope it's a minor issue and Guerra is back quickly.
  11. Yeah, with the way he's been pitching I'd rather have him there than in the starting rotation. Jokes aside, this is probably good roster management. Garza is owed money and we have better rotation options. Now we can use him as insurance, and if he's not needed we can cut him when he comes off the DL. It won't cost us any additional money, and maybe we get some value out of it.
  12. It's the interwebs: we get worked up over the trivial. :-)
  13. Guys, this shouldn't be something to get too worked up over. We're talking about wearing hats here.
  14. I wear hats in the summer mainly because after about 20 minutes in the sun my head burns. I usually have an ample selection of hats from which to choose, but if I were in a situation where I was going to be in the sun and the only hat offered to me was that of a non-Brewer baseball team, I would gladly wear it. The actual pain of sunburn and the potential for skin cancer is a far bigger concern for me than any worry of a stranger thinking I might be the fan of another team. Honestly, the worry of a stranger thinking I might be the fan of another team is far down the list of my concerns in life. It's not non-existent, as I would certainly choose to wear just about anything other than Chicago sports related clothing, but it isn't something I'd lose sleep over.
  15. The open 40-man spot eases the initial poster's problem. If we need another position player called up, we can add someone to the 40-man without the risk of losing someone else.
  16. The article said they hope he's ready by the end of April, so this allows him to be insurance against another pitcher either getting hurt or completely stinking up the joint for a month. Shortly after that, they will be beyond the cutoff and can bring up Hader to replace anyone who is injured or under-performing.
  17. I would like to see Thames/Aguilar splitting games 50/50 for the first three weeks at least. I get where you're going after how spring training went, but the Brewers just signed Thames to a three-year deal, while Aguilar was a waiver wire claim. I don't think there's any way they're splitting time unless Thames really stinks for an extended period.
  18. I live in Illinois and wear Brewer gear all the time. It often starts conversations, and any bad feelings are usually dismissed when the Cub fans realize that I usually know more about their team (or at least the players on their team) then they do. As to what other people wear, I really don't care, that's their business. Off topic, but this thread made me think of one time at a Spring Training game years ago when I was completely "homered up" in Brewer gear and a nice couple of ladies behind me asked who I liked. I assumed they had little knowledge of the team, so I said "I'm cheering for the Brewers." They replied that they got that, but asked if there were any players I liked. I started in on how the Brewers were rebuilding (last rebuild, not this one) and that they had some good players coming up. Before I could get too far, one of them stopped me and said "I know, I'm JJ Hardy's aunt, and this is his mom." Lesson about making assumptions learned :-)
  19. It will be interesting to see how often Thames is used as a corner OF. If they like Thames in the OF/Aguilar at 1B more than Perez in the OF/Thames at 1B, then Aguilar could see a decent number of PAs this year. Otherwise, Aguilar isn't going to see many PAs as "primary power bat off the bench" with the occasional start at first.
  20. Didn't the Brewers just try to extend Villar? Maybe they just thought that the contract would make him more valuable in trade in a couple of years, but usually offering a player an extension means you view them as more than a "placeholder." Maybe to some fans, but the Brewers' actions have shown that in their eyes Villar has already proven that he is a better option than Scooter at second. Me too. Nothing against Scooter, or any player, but it's good that we are getting more talented players on the roster. Fans can and will form emotional attachments to certain players, but a GM can't do that. For them, this is a business. When lesser talented players are replaced with more talented players, the team gets better. If we can keep making incremental steps in that direction, pretty soon we'll have a good team.
  21. Wound up being this: Tom‏ @Haudricourt 20m20 minutes ago #Brewers tell Jesus Aguilar he has made team and told Rene Garcia, Ivan De Jesus Jr. and Eric Sogard they will not make team. Way to go Aguilar forcing yourself on to opening day roster. Barring trade, that makes it seem like we're going with 13 pitchers: 8 starters, plus bench of Pina, Aguilar, Perez, Kirk N. Am I missing someone else who still has a decent shot at making the roster?
  22. Batting third in the lineup against the Indians.
  23. With his $3 million salary. Yes. If his value was zero he would have gone unclaimed. Cincy is on the hook for his contract now so he was worth $3M to them. True. The correct phraseology would be "with his $3 million salary he had zero trade value"
  24. I think they want to keep Aguilar along with someone who can back up SS so that Villar can be full-time 2B. Having Gennett didn't allow for that, so he's gone and I think de Jesus will make the team. All this could of course change if we see a trade that changes things dramatically.
  25. Gennett being waived to open up a roster spot could hint to a trade being more likely than an early dismissal of Garza.
