  1. And sometimes a pitcher CC calls upon who has been lights out has a bad night. It happens. These players are not robots. Even the best of the best have outings that stink. My main beef - if you can call it that - is sometimes CC doesn't have someone else up just in case his first option struggles. Exactly. Some have a comprehension problem with this but I think you're take is perfectly reasonable. Top of 6: ~ 70 pitches = Davies = pitching great. Austin > .180 BA Black > 1 run lead = St Louis = Destroyed. Hader Pomeranz Suter = need rest. I would argue the comprehension issue is not with the people that scratched the head at the moves made by Counsell in ^^ game.
  2. Or, maybe we’re meant to beat the Nats, and to play the Dodgers in a 5 gamer instead of 7. Remember how much pressure will be on those 2 teams. They are expected to win. Pressure pressure. Dodgers will likely sweep us. Brewers weren’t supposed to get into the playoffs either, but did. Dodgers supposed to win a World Series but don’t. Also remember this: the most important aspect of a baseball team is the bullpen. They might have a better offense and rotation, but we got em with the pen. But, first we beat the Nats.
  3. Or, maybe we’re meant to beat the Nats, and to play the Dodgers in a 5 gamer instead of 7. Remember how much pressure will be on those 2 teams. They are expected to win. Pressure pressure.
  4. Playoff pitching rosters taking shape with Albers and Black now eliminated from consideration in all likelihood. Tomorrow i rest Grandal and Moose. And pitch Burnes for 2-3 innings, Claudio, Houser for 1-2, Albers, Peralta, D Williams. If we win, great, if not, ok too.
  5. Context matters. Lots of things I say are taken out of context, like the Black comments, go back and find that comment on unhittable stuff, you might find I said IF he can can command he’d have unhittable stuff. But go thru the pitching thread and you’ll see what I really think of him. But whatever, the games over, what happened is written, time to move on. Black is now out of the picture, and won’t sniff a leverage until 2020 at the earliest.
  6. Lack of understanding? I understand quite well thank you. One of a million prognostications came kinda true? A million is definitely an exaggeration, more like dozens and dozens. Applauding him for his September pen management and then banging on him last night are mutually exclusive? Ahhh no, don’t think they are. As far as CC is concerned, imo, it’s more his overwhelmingly palpable aura of confidence that has this team playing at such a high level. Then the perfect storm of Suter only giving up 1 run in 2 months of pitching, Peralta going to AAA this last time and finding his best command/control that he’s had in 2 years with MKE. Pomeranz finding his niche, Hader his slider, Jackson vs righties, Claudio vs lefties, Guerra his splitter. And of course Counsell knowing how and when to use his pen. Everyone makes mistakes, even CC. Imo he made one in yesterday’s game. That’s it.
  7. Yes, this next CBA, is the whole ball of wax, at least for the next 7-10 years or more. I’m not very hopeful, without Selig, to help the small markets. Only real hope is to have more revenue sharing, even the playing field much more than it is now. I know Selig has gotten a fair amount of revenue sharing already, but with revenue having exploded in the last 10 years, the gap has widened. 600 mil a year to the Yankees vs 170 mil a year to the Rays, not good. With everything equalizing analytically and brain power wise, money will be the true separator. Imo.
  8. He was wrong to take out a starter you have repeatedly said you don't like, to go to our pen, which you have repeatedly said is the best in baseball, to a pitcher in Black you have repeatedly said has unhittable stuff? Sure. Simple. You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried! Go back and look at what I really think of black, pitching thread should do it. What in the heck does my general dislike for Davies have to do with anything? He’s been pitching really well lately, which we all know. Your opinions are biased towards me, just like 3-5 others maybe more. But you know what > for all of my early ridiculous predictions, as bad as they were, this last couple months I’ve been dead on. Sorry, but you can’t really mock me for RECENT comments and prediction’s, especially with regards to the bullpen, since I called EXACTLY what would happen before this run. I said this pen would be outrageously dominant AND IT HAS. I said they’d go on a run AND THEY DID. That’s simple facts.
  9. Keep feeding the wild animals and they will keep coming back. Disruption? How about an on topic opinion? Instead of bashing me for the 27th time, you could make your specific comments known regarding this very specific take within this topic or just shush. That’s of course just my opinion, thank you for your consideration.
  10. Keep feeding the wild animals and they will keep coming back. Says the poster who has repeatedly said how bad a pitching staff, this team has had all year, and that it’s been that pitching and not the offense that would keep this team from the playoffs. Yup.
  11. I love Counsell, he’s the reason this team wins more games than any other team in September. He’s the reason we’re in the playoffs. But he was wrong in taking out Davies thru pinch hitting and replacing him with Black in the 6th inning up by a run. That’s it. Simple. It’s not the end of life as we know it, it’s just a game. But we lost that game. At least Counsell now knows what most of us kinda knew before yesterday > Black should be know where near a 2-1 lead in a big game in the 6th inning.
  12. 62% win probability in a vacuum. The moves he made can’t be quantified analytically all the way thru or can they? CC said he pinch hit for Davies to get a hit to score. What’s the % chance that actually happens? I think Austin was 9 for 50 so what is that 18%? Davies for the 6th vs Black for the 6th? Davies till he gets in trouble, then Peralta for 2, which could virtually finish the game with a potential assist from Pomeranz? Don’t know what would have happened had his decision been to stay with Davies until he got in trouble, but I’d say 63% win probability probably low.
  13. You're using hindsight to attack the one time in weeks when not allowing that SP a 3rd trip through backfired. And that's not even factoring in the chance to tack on runs when Davies was PH for. No I’m not using hindsight. At the time he took out Davies the % is ~ 20% to score. Right? We all know 3 other facts: Davies has controlled the zone and the Rockies lineup with less than 70 pitches thrown. And, Black with his history( think of the last time he pitched with us up by a run > Cardinals debacle)cannot. Then With not wanting to use Suter Hader Pomeranz if possible because of use, we now know we’ll have to cover at a minimum 4 innings. When he pinch hit, I didn’t like the move, but i thought Peralta would be in to pitch and not black, not after what he did in St. Louis, never in a million years did I think Ray Black. Stop with The hindsight talk, not when most of us that were watching the game and seen Ray black pitching the sixth in a one run game, all had the same thought > ugh. No hindsight. Real time shock at what was transpiring. This coming from someone who doesn’t need to be told we would be where we are without his superlative use of the bullpen all month. Back before this run started I predicted it, adamantly defended it happening, jousting with many doubters daily. I knew Counsell was going to lead this team to the playoffs and especially this bullpen to dominance. But when he’s wrong with the most important move of the year, I’m calling him out, unlike the reporters that have to get along with him.
  14. As Sandy Alderson(12th ranked GM of all time)said on Brian Kenny’s MLB now show 2 weeks back, I am paraphrasing > “A large market team with today’s analytics only needs a smart GM and they will win forever, unless changes are made.” Which is exactly what I’ve been saying for some time. If things stay the same, 3 4 5 7 9 years from now, it’ll be the large market superteams vs everybody else. Goliath vs Goliath yearly for the World Series, with the very rare appearance by David.
  15. This isn't directed at you, I'm replying to your post because you have the quote from Counsell. My question for some here and fans in general is, why does it require a quote in the paper explaining a move to calm yourselves down? When does someone get the benefit of the doubt? He's not making decisions via a Magic 8 ball. This team has 89 wins against 71 losses while outscoring opponents by 5 runs on the year. I think it's safe to say that Counsell manages in-game situations better than most if not all. Because it explains his mind set, which in this case is flawed, imo. I think we know already, without being told dozens or even hundreds of times, CC knows and fans don’t. But when he makes an egregious error, like yesterday, I’m not just gonna sit there quietly like Haudricourt or McCalvey or Murray or whoever, you know, to not ruffle any feathers. And if we’re being brutally honest with ourselves, how many of us would have pinch hit for Davies and put in black to start the sixth? Thought so.
  16. Thanks for the info. So for a ~ 20% chance to score, we replace a pitcher that’s controlling the strike zone with one that can’t. Wish I’d have heard from Counsell, hey, I made a mistake there. But oh well, I hope it’s a good learning experience anyhow.
  17. Lineup: LF > Grisham C > Grandal 3B > Moose 2B > Hiura 1B > Thames CF > Cain RF > Gamel SS > Arcia Bench: Spangenberg Taylor Pina Perez Austin Freitas Pitching Staff: 1.) Woodruff 2.) Lyles 3.) Houser 4.) Burnes 5.) Guerra 6.) Claudio 7.) Jackson 8.) Suter 9.) Peralta 10.) Pomeranz 11.) Hader Woodruff > 3-4 innings Suter > 1-2 innings Peralta > 1-2 innings 7th > Peralta/ Pomeranz/Hader 8th > Pomeranz/Hader 9th > Hader
  18. After game 160, the bullpen to me, is crystal clear: 1.) Hader > with tons of rest, capable of 45 great pitches. 2.) Pomeranz > see Hader 3.) Peralta > see Pomeranz 4.) Suter > Command otherworldly 5.) Jackson > Roogy ONLY 6.) Claudio > Loogy ONLY 7.) Guerra > Borderline, but low heart rate helps 8.) Albers > no Command for 7 weeks, but, IF he can get it back, he could be the difference maker. No Black No D Williams We have 4 dominant arms, 2 limited dominant, and Guerra and possibly Albers. I know i’m going to get blasted for what I’m about to say, but, I want to see Burnes pitch in one of these last 2 games, and if he’s dominant, then I want him for the DS. Even with Anderson or Houser or Woodruff in the pen, we can use another RH power arm.
  19. Counsell has been sooooooo good this month managing the pitching staff and bullpen, that it’s not easy to criticize him when i believe he erred. But the last 2 games are head scratchers to me. Thursday in Cincinnati, 8th inning, up 5-2, brings in D Williams instead of Peralta. Not a move that made much sense unless Peralta was unavailable. I thought at the time maybe Peralta celebrated a little too much thru the night. But last night, with Suter Pomeranz Hader unavailable, why take Davies out when he’d controlled their lineup for 5 innings to put in Black, who’s last real high leverage situation, he was destroyed by a bad hitting Cardinals team? If he wanted to save Peralta for the 8 and 9th to close, ok, then why take Davies out? Why not let him to continue to deal and control the zone, instead of a wild throwing head case like Black? Just when I think we have a genius manager, this.
