  1. - INF/OF Angel Pereira activated from ACL Brewers’ 7-day injured list - RHP Joel Kuhnel outrighted to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers (though I’m not sure if he accepted it or elected free agency)
  2. Zavier Warren produced all three runs in Biloxi’s victory and KC Hunt had another fine outing in Wisconsin’s comeback win. Nashville was blown out and Carolina lost a tight affair. Transactions: RHP Jason Woodward sent on a rehab assignment to ACL Brewers RHP Taylor Clarke activated from Nashville's 7-day IL RHP Jose Nova assigned to Carolina from ACL Brewers INF Adam Hall placed on AA Biloxi’s 7-Day Injured List INF Zavier Warren reinstated to AA Biloxi from Development List Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Jacksonville 10, Nashville 0 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Routed in Jacksonville RHP Taylor Clarke (4 1/3 IP, 8 R, 9 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) retuned to action after a short injury list stint (sore toe), though he may wish he’d taken a few extra days. After retiring the first three hitters (3 groundouts), things went haywire after consecutive infield singles to commence the 2nd inning. A day after scaring Brewers’ backers by exiting early with apparent hamstring tightness, DH/OF Garrett Mitchell was right back atop the lineup, grounding out and singling before exiting after 4 innings this time. Sounds’ Extras: Despite the shutout, the Sounds did manage to strand 11 baserunners on the back of 5 hits, 5 walks and a hit-by-pitch. Top starting pitcher RHP Chad Patrick (3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks) was due for some work, so came in late with Nashville trailing 8-0, giving up two doubles and hitting a batter. Maybe we should keep starting him! Friday’s outlook: With the Sounds staring at a 2-1 series deficit, LHP Aaron Ashby is scheduled to start, aiming to bounce back after yielding 7 earned runs in his last outing. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 3, Pensacola 2 Box Score and Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Defeat Pensacola, 3-2, Behind Warren's Three-RBI Night Biloxi continued its season turn-around which began back on June 6, boosting its record to 13-6 since that point. 1B Zavier Warren had been heating up before a placement on the Development List, resuming his surge in his first game back: 2-for-3, triple, all 3 RBIs for the Shuckers. Conceding only 2 runs took some effort and clutch pitching, as RHP innings-eaters Brett Wichrowski and TJ Shook combined to allow 11 baserunners over 6 2/3 IP. The opposition went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position for the game. While Warren collected the biggest hits of the game, Shook got some help from 3B Brock Wilken for the most important out: gunning down the potential tying run at home in the top of the 7th inning. Shuckers’ Extras: With RHPs Craig Yoho and Blake Holub covering the late innings, we can sleep well with any lead: they retired all 7 batters faced, 4 via strikeout. Dylan O’Rae had a productive day as DH, singling twice, walking and stealing a base, though he was also picked off. Along with the more victory video highlights, be sure to check out Yoho’s latest interview: Friday’s outlook: Ever-exciting 22-year old RHP Logan Henderson seeks his fourth Win in his fourth start at the AA level, having gone 5 1/3 scoreless innings with 6 Ks last week. Biloxi leads the series 2-1 at this point. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 3, South Bend 2 Box Score and Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: The Timber Rattlers Have the Last Rally This Time We once again thank Wisconsin’s media team for compiling video highlights: And don’t forget to listen to the 21-minute Mehring/Lobner post-game podcast featuring comments from Manager Victor Estevez and Eduardo Garcia. Starting RHP KC Hunt (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks) was effective even without his best stuff (75 pitches, 46 strikes), conceding a single run in his final inning to exit the 1-1 ballgame. Eight Timber Rattlers collected at least one hit, while the 9th drew a walk, but the key was stringing 3 hits together with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, starting with Ramon Rodriguez’s double. SS Gregory Barrios, who tripled but was thrown out at home in the 5th inning, produced the sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th inning to Wisconsin back the lead at 3-2. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: South Bend gave themselves a real chance by throwing out Wisconsin baserunners to end the 7th and 8th innings, but RHPs Aaron Rund and Yerlin Rodriguez shut the door, Rodriguez working around a leadoff 9th inning single. 3B Eduardo Garcia’s 3 singles lifted his small High-A sample batting average to .423 and OPS to 1.000, as he makes a strong case to return to AA Biloxi. Friday’s outlook: RHP Will Rudy is scheduled to start with Wisconsin still trailing the series 2-1. Final: Lynchburg 5, Carolina 4 Box Score and Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Lynchburg Beats Mudcats Credit starting RHP Enniel Cortez (the youngest player in the Carolina League) with navigating through traffic, in particular escaping a 1st and 3rd, nobody out situation in the 4th inning. Issuing 3 walks is rare for Cortez, who’d only allowed 4 free passes in 28 1/3 innings entering the game, but his final numbers were solid: 4 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks. The Mudcats are clearly missing INFs Juan Baez (injured list) and Cooper Pratt (spiked a few days ago), but may have won this game if they’d pulled the plug on RH reliever Brailin Rodriguez (1 2/3 IP, 4 R) a bit earlier. Six of the first nine Hillcats reached base against Rodriguez (triple, 2 doubles, 2 BB, 1 HBP), as a 3-1 advantage turned into a 5-4 deficit by the 6th inning. The Mudcats’ 6 thru 9 hitters were the most productive, collecting 6 hits, 2 RBIs, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored, led by 3B Miguel Briceno (double, single, SB), 1B Satchell Norman (double, walk, RBI, SB) and 2B Jose Acosta (2 singles, RBI, SB). Carolina had the leadoff man aboard in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings, but was unable to push the tying run across. Mudcats’ Extras: After allowing a run-scoring double to the first batter he faced, 22-year old RHP Jose Nova was solid in his Low-A debut: 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K. RHP Aidan Maldonado continues to be Manager Nick Stanley’s most reliable closer, going 2 scoreless innings with 3 Ks. Something to watch (for a possible injury): Reliable veteran catcher David Garcia exited after grounding into a double play in the bottom of the 8th inning. Friday’s outlook: RHP Josh Knoth seeks a repeat of his last start (5 2/3 scoreless innings with 7 Ks), with Carolina needing a win to even the series 2-2. Final: ACL Brewers 11, ACL Dodgers 5 Box Score and Game Log After dropping 6 of 7 games, it had to feel great for the ACL Crew to win in dominant fashion. A five-run 4th inning catapulted the ACL Brewers to a 6-3 lead which would hold up from there. The stat-masters claim that the three biggest win probability swings all occurred in that frame, including the 2-run double by 2B Josh Adamczewski (2-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs, SB) to put the Brewers in front 4-3 and 2-run homer by C Edgardo Ordonez to add extra cushion. SS Tyler Rodriguez and 3B Eric Bitonti (1.019 OPS!) also had solid games, each going 2-for-5 but with Rodriguez smacking a 3-run blast in the top of the 9th inning (his first homer of 2024). On the mound, the team welcomed 4th round 2023 draft pick 21-year old RHP Jason Woodward for his organizational debut after a long injury recovery. He started and yielded one run, while 17-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) and 19-year old Jesus Flores (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) did the heavy lifting. Final: DSL Reds 4, DSL Brewers Uno 1, (in 7 innings as scheduled) Box Score and Game Log Given time constraints, I’ve got to quote from the Daily Minor League Game Forum: Wenderlyn King (4 IP | 6 H | 1 R | 0 BB | 1 K) and Luis Pena (1-2, HBP, 2B, SB, lone run scored) get the game balls in the DSL Uno's 4-1 loss today. – sveumrules Young Dominican RHP Christopher Peralta (turned 17 mid-May) continues to shine in three inning stints. 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HB, 4 K, 2 R (unearned). DSL Crew Uno trail 4-2 in the middle innings …Later in the contest the scorers credited Peralta with 1 ER. Hard to make - reading the game logs - what exactly happened in Corobo's scored throwing error. – Joseph Zarr Final: DSL Brewers Dos 8, DSL Royals Fortuna 5 Box Score and Game Log 17-year-old Venezuelan OF Angel Gonzalez with his marquis DSL moment today. Bottom of the 8th. 2 on. 2 out. Smacks a 3-run go-ahead bomb to give the suddenly charging DSL Cerveceros an 8-5 lead! That lead would hold for Gonzalez's fellow 18-year-old teammate and countryman RHP Argenis Aparicio who closed the game out. Aparicio has been quite solid for the DSL Brewers Dos showing improved numbers and results across the board in his second DSL season with the organization. Today, he did the heavy-lifting allowing for the comeback and holding it down to secure the 'W': 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 ER. He did throw two scored WP in there but, hey, you gotta keep those young opponents on their heels! The DSL Dos moved to 10-7 on the season. Quite the run they are on. – Joseph Zarr We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. 4. RHP KC Hunt (2.51 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 14.0 K/9 in 43 IP) continues to be must-see viewing for High-A Wisconsin, which trails its home series 2-0 against crummy South Bend. 2B Jadher Areinamo has a 10-game hitting streak.
  5. DH/OF Garrett Mitchell is right back atop AAA Nashville’s lineup after leaving yesterday’s game early. RHP Taylor Clarke (3.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 7.3 K/9 in 26 IP) is also back from injury and starting. The AAA Sounds are tied 1-1 in their series at Jacksonville.
  6. AA Biloxi is tied in their home series against Pensacola, with 21-year old RHP Brett Wichrowski (4.76 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 9.3 K/9 in 45.1 IP) getting tonight’s start. CF Carlos D. Rodriguez has an 8-game hitting streak.
  7. 18-year old RHP Enniel Cortez makes his 2nd Low-A start (4 scoreless IP with 5 Ks last time out) as Carolina aims to grab a 2-1 home series lead over Lynchburg. SS Daniel Guilarte has a 6-game hitting streak. Pratt and Walling remain absent after leaving Tuesday’s game early.
  8. I'm hoping we'll "go for it" in Willy Adames' final season with the club.
  9. Who’s ready for one more nail-biter of a game? AA Biloxi shoots for a 2-0 series lead at home over Pensacola behind RHP Bradley Blalock (4.24 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 in 51 AA IP). SS Eric Brown Jr. has a 7-game hitting streak and 12-game on-base streak, though his OPS in the 12 games is just .698.
  10. Jeez. Nashville had 1st and 3rd with nobody out in the top of the 9th inning and didn’t score. Game still 10-10. They’re 4-for-21 with RISP, having stranded 13. Mitchell was substituted. Not sure if it’s a bubble wrap move.
  11. While Jake Bauers hits his grand slam, Nashville and Jacksonville enter the 9th inning tied 10-10, with the Sounds having Mitchell, Wiemer and Collins up.
  12. - Signed RHP Ruben Saldana (from Mexico) and assigned to DSL Brewers-1
  13. LHP Tate Keuhner has been on a roll for High-A Wisconsin (1.85 ERA in last 34 IP), who need a home win over South Bend to tie their series.
  14. RHP Evan McKendry had a terrific bounce-back outing last time out (5.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks). AAA Nashville will be hoping he delivers again as they seek to forge a 1-1 series tie at Jacksonville.
  15. Kuhnel’s been solid and I believe he has one minor league option remaining:
  16. Low-A Carolina hosts Guardians’ affiliate Lynchburg this week. It’s good to see LF Yhoswar Garcia right back in the lineup after exiting mid-at bat in the 9th inning on Sunday. 18-year old RHP Manuel Rodriguez has averaged 6.1 IP/game over his last 3 starts (19 IP, 4 ER, 12 Ks).
  17. - OF Terence Doston released by High-A Wisconsin - RHP Alejandro Parra placed on DSL Brewers-2’s 7-day injured list
  18. Thanks for this piece. When CF-Rod got the call, it felt like the Chourio promotion to me - i.e. prioritizing near-term development and long-term success over immediate results (e.g. we could have picked up a veteran or gone with Chad Patrick instead, and maybe Taylor Clarke or Evan McKendry once they’re back to full form). I’m still surprised at this in CF-Rod’s case, as he’d often been talked about as a high-floor, low-ceiling guy (e.g. future number 4 or 5 starting pitcher), but I’m sure the organization knows what it’s doing. CF-Rod struggled mightily in his initial AAA starts, so we shouldn’t be surprised if there’s some steep learning required to perform well in the Majors too.
  19. That looks like a return-from-injury for Colmenarez, who had respectable numbers last year as a 17-year old. Tovar exited late; hopefully he’s not injured. Kevin Garcia’s 3 homers are looking less impressive next to his .154 batting average. But then again, he’s still just 16 years old.
  20. Shane Smith retired 17 of 18 batters, while Brewer Hicklen and Eric Haase both homered late in victories for Biloxi and Nashville. Wisconsin and Carolina both fell a run short in their comebacks. For the week, Biloxi (5-1) and Carolina (5-2) were series winners, while Wisconsin and Nashville both split their contests (3-3). Transactions: LHP Jesus Broca promoted to ACL Brewers from DSL Brewers-2 RHP Fabian Reyes assigned to DSL Brewers-2 from DSL Brewers-1 RHP Francisco Guevara assigned to DSL Brewers-2 from DSL Brewers-1 Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Durham 4 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Late Rally Propels Hot Chickens to Victory in Series Finale Early season offensive stud Brewer Hicklen (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 SBs) had his first multi-hit game since returning from an injury on June 15, singling home 2 runs to tie the game in the bottom of the 1st inning and later leading off the bottom of the 8th inning with a 108.7mph, 423-foot blast to knot things back up again at 4-4. C Eric Haase wasn’t ramping back up after an injury, but he still had a right to be rusty after sitting on the Major League taxi squad for the past week. Instead, he collected 2 hits including mashing the first pitch he saw 440 feet to give the Sounds the only lead they’d need at 5-4. With every Nashville starting pitcher auditioning for a call-up to the Show, RHP Garrett Stallings’ (5 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks) second start of the week didn’t go as well as his first, conceding 2-run homers in the 1st and 4th innings to exit trailing 4-3. Struggling right-handed reliever Mitch White (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 HBP, 3 Ks) may have turned an important corner just in time, going from a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the top of the 6th inning to ultimately covering 3 1/3 scoreless innings. High heat (96mph) was an effective weapon on this night. Sounds’ Extras: Three of the four batters who reached against White were by hit-by-pitch, but that didn’t stop Bulls’ hitters from swinging early in seemingly every at-bat. He needed just 3 pitches to escape the bases loaded, nobody out situation in the 6th inning, then only 5 pitches to record 3 outs in the 8th frame. SS Vinny Capra went 0-for-3 with 3 Ks and a walk, but he was part of each of the Sounds’ 3 double plays defensively, including crucial ones to end the 6th and 9th innings. Center fielder Garrett Mitchell reached twice (single, walk), while DH Joey Wiemer doubled and stole a base. Next week’s outlook: Nashville heads to Jacksonville (hopefully by airplane; otherwise it’s an 8 1/2-hour drive) to face the Marlins’ affiliate this week. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 4, Rocket City 2 Box Score and Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers End First Half on High Note Behind Dominant Outing from Shane Smith Making his second start of the week didn’t faze 24-year old RHP Shane Smith, as he simply mowed down the opposition more efficiently than ever, retiring 17 of 18 batters faced, including 7 by strikeout. Smith needed only 68 pitches to cover 5 2/3 innings, with his sole blemish being a solo homer yielded to Rocket City number 9 hitter. 3B Brock Wilken (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) and 1B Zavier Warren gave Smith and the Shuckers’ bullpen all the runs they would require, contributing 2-run shots on each side of the Trash Pandas solo homer to lead 4-1 by the 4th inning. Each team stranded just 3 baserunners as opportunities were relatively limited. But RHP Blake Holub ended up facing Rocket City’s potential game-winning run with 2-on, 2-out in the bottom of the 9th inning, striking him out on 5 pitches. Shuckers’ Extras: Smith was not drafted, folks. Signed in July 2021, he basically needed one injury year, one recovery year (just 3 IP in 2022), 1.2 years relieving and is now dominating after shifting to long inning work since May 1. Holub has yielded no earned runs over his last 11 games (13 IP with 15 Ks and 2 BB). He’s obviously rediscovered his confidence and form since returning to AA ball, registering 5 saves and a Win over his last 7 outings. LHP Nate Peterson (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K) was unfortunately not very sharp in relief this time out, but he navigated around his traffic in the 7th and 8th innings before Holub stranded his leadoff walk in the final frame. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi’s home this week, taking on Marlins’ affiliate Pensacola as the squads kick off the second half of the AA season. RHP Jacob Misiorowski is the scheduled starter for Tuesday’s opening game. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fort Wayne 6, Wisconsin 5 Box Score and Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Road Trip Ends with Close Loss to TinCaps As the game link indicates, Wisconsin nearly pulled off the 9th-inning comeback, though this felt like a painful lesson in the perils of procrastination. Credit the opposing TinCaps with recovering from their inning-opening error and two hits (Jadher Areinamo, Luke Adams) to induce the ground ball double play (Matt Wood) and then strikeout Felix Valerio to preserve their win and forge a 3-3 series tie. Starting RHP Alexander Cornielle (5 IP, 5 R (3 ER), 6 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) wasn’t as effective as we’re used to seeing, although a Fort Wayne error allowed 3 Wisconsin unearned runs to score in the 3rd inning, essentially evening the scales. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Every Timber Rattler in the lineup reached base via hit or walk, except leadoff center fielder Luis Lara. Areinamo (single, 2 walks) and Adams (single, 2 HBPs) each came aboard three times. Adams also stole his 18th base. Did you click on the box score? Wisconsin had zero RBIs, yet still scored 5 runs. That’s what errors, wild pitches and double plays will do. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin returns home after two weeks on the road, with LHP Mark Manfredi expected to start the opening game against Cubs’ affiliate South Bend. Final: Columbia 5, Carolina 3 Box Score and Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Fall To Fireflies Similar to the Sounds and T-Rats, the Mudcats also waited until late to attempt a comeback. In this case, their best shot came and went in the top of the 8th inning. SS Cooper Pratt (DHing here) had a rare rough spurt (2 Ks, a GIDP) before following up a Yophery Rodriguez walk with a single to extend his on-base streak to 30 games. Unfortunately, 3B Daniel Guilarte and Walling were not able to produce a game-tying hit. Some hours before that, starting RHP Jesus Rivero reminded us of all of the great and maddening things he’s capable of on the mound. He struck out the side in the 2nd inning, then went triple, HBP, BB, WP, BB, K before exiting down 2-1 in the 3rd inning. This was Rivero’s first start since a blowup outing on May 1st (six relief appearances since), but he was perhaps pushed into action due to the unavailability of RHP Bishop Letson (last pitched June 14; no injury placement or word on status). Each of 1B Reece Walling, left fielder Yhoswar Garcia (2-for-3, walk, SB) and right fielder Luis Castillo (2-for-4, RBI) doubled and scored to keep Carolina in the game. Notably, Garcia exited the game mid-at bat in the top of the 9th inning, so we’ll be watching his health status. Although the team went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, two of those outs produced runs (well, one “out” was a reached-on-error). Mudcats’ Extras: Old man (relative to teammates) RHP Jeferson Figueroa unfortunately didn’t have his best stuff, conceding 2 solo homers in the 5th inning to take the loss. Recent signee 25-year old RHP Tyler Bryant’s organizational debut was a success, stranding a baserunner for Rivero and pitching a scoreless inning of his own. Credit RHPs Aidan Maldonado and Harrison Durow with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to give the offense a chance, retiring all 7 batters faced. Next week’s outlook: Carolina comes home to battle Guardians’ affiliate Lynchburg, whom the Mudcats held off to claim the season’s first half division title. 21.
