  1. Kevin Herget stays in to face Jacksonville’s 4-5-6 batters - Conine (15 HR in 2024), Bride (homered today), Johnston (26 HR last year), trying to close out a 7-6 win on the road.
  2. Herget walked 2 and threw 24 pitches in a scoreless 8th, then Isaac Collins doubled and was stranded in the top of the 9th. Who will Manager Rick Sweet look to to try to close it out?
  3. The final 6 Mudcats went down in order, so they fall 4-2 and tied their home series against Lynchburg 3-3. 2B Filippo Di Turi reached base 3 times (2 singles, walk), but credit Hillcats’ just-turned 20-year old catcher Manuel Mejias with throwing out 3 of 4 attempted basestealers, a day after his teammate went 0-for-9.
  4. Hicklen K’d, then Wiemer’s basically an automatic out at the moment (K), but Owen Miller walked and Yonny Hernandez put the Sounds ahead 7-6 with a 1st-pitch single the other way to score Wes Clarke! That’s Nashville’s first lead of the day and RHP Kevin Herget comes in. Is he tasked with getting the final 6 outs?
  5. Isaac Collins ties it up on a blast to right field! 6-6, still in the 8th inning. That’s his 10th homer of the year. And Clarke follows with a walk.
  6. But Aaron Rund gets the job done with a swinging K, ground out (runner to 3rd) and another swinging K to end it. Timber Rattlers win 2-1 and capture the series over the Cubs 4 games to 2!
  7. Normally-reliable SS Gregory Barrios opens the 9th inning with an error to put the potential game-tying run on 2nd base. Gulp.
  8. They’re into the 8th inning in Jacksonville, with the Sounds trailing 6-5. It wasn’t planned as a bullpen day, but they were reasonably-rested to handle it after Garrett Stallings lasted only 1.2 IP. Collins, Clarke and Hicklen are a promising trio due up.
  9. I’m wrong again. Rund stays in for the 9th against South Bend’s 5-6-7 hitters.
  10. Opportunities have been a bit scarce for Carolina since the 2nd inning, which makes it more painful the they ran themselves out of the 4th and 6th innings via caught stealing (Yhoswar at 3rd, Luis Castillo at 2nd). They trail 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning on a true bullpen day (4 Mudcat pitchers - max 2.2 IP).
  11. Stiven Cruz allowed 1 run in the 7th inning, then Aaron Rund stranded 2 in the 8th, so Wisconsin’s clinging to a 2-1 lead. I figure Yerlin Rodriguez will get the 9th.
  12. Alexander Cornielle threw 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 singles and a walk with 5 Ks. But it remains a tight affair with Wisconsin leading 2-0. Luis Lara (double, run) and Jadher Areinamo (single, RBI, run) have principally generated the offense. DH Jesus Chirinos exited after lining out in the 2nd inning.
  13. Stallings and Edward Cabrera are both being hit hard in Jacksonville. 4-4 game in the 3rd inning. The Sounds might have grabbed the lead if Wiemer could hit (K’d with Hicklen on 3rd with 1 out). Dorrian also tripled. Collins doubled and stole a base.
  14. I was wrong. Figueroa exits after 2 innings and 43 pitches, having yielded 3 runs on 2 homers and a double. RHP Jose Nova comes in with Carolina trailing 3-2. Daniel Guilarte and Miguel Briceno have both doubled and scored for the good guys.
  15. AAA Nashville needs a victory behind RHP Garrett Stallings (4.95 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 20 IP) today to earn a 3-3 series split at Jacksonville. 3B Patrick Dorrian’s 3 hits yesterday raised his average from .110 to .135.
  16. High-A Wisconsin is also targeting a 4-2 home series win over South Bend, leaning on 22-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.44 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 55 IP) to get the job done. 2B Jadher Areinamo is 2nd in the Midwest League in hits (77), 1st in doubles (18).
  17. Low-A Carolina can clinch a 4-2 home series win with a victory over Lynchburg today. RF Reece Walling returns after exiting Tuesday’s game early. RHP Jeferson Figueroa (2.28 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 27.2 IP) hasn’t exceeded 57 pitches since September 2022 (last 42 outings), but don’t be surprised if he blows through that mark today.
  18. I doubt Arnold will do it, but he'd likely need to option Mitchell until about August 24th to snatch an extra year. I calculate Mitchell as having accrued 1 year, 134 days of MLB service time thus far, most of it while injured. August 24 - September 29 would give him another 37 MLB days, leaving him 1 day short of 2 years. I'm also no expert on the rules, but that's my best guess based on the 172 days = 1 season guidance point.
  19. Solid shutout by Yujanyer Herrera and Brian Fitzpatrick. No extra-base hits allowed. Just 1 walk. No HBPs. 8 Ks in 7 innings. However, this does not look like a 6’3”, 175-pound man to me. Just saying.
  20. This is where the O’Rae promotion caught me off-guard. Eduardo Garcia, Felix Valerio, Gregory Barrios, Matt Wood, Jadher Areinamo and Luke Adams all have decent promotion cases, in my opinion, though there’s only room to move 1-2 right now. I guess the near-term promotion chain (assuming there is one) could be something like: Bitonti, TBD; Yhoswar, Pratt; TBD, TBD; Campbell, CD-Rod.
  21. After leading 2-1 since the 4th inning, Justin Yeager unfortunately couldn’t close it for Biloxi, allowing a 3-run homer with 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning. He was ahead 0-1 to that batter and 0-2 to the prior hitter (singled). Yoho and Holub are the true shut down guys, but Yeager can normally be counted on - he drops to 7-for-9 in save opportunities. Solid work by Shane Smith, Bo Bowman, Sam Carlson and Justin King over 8 innings: 1 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 8 Ks CF Carlos D. Rodriguez tripled in a run and scored in the 4th inning to give Biloxi the 2-1 advantage which nearly held up.
  22. Should the organization go ahead and make Gregory Barrios the 2nd-youngest player in the Southern League? I’m sure that’s what they’re contemplating and perhaps struggling with as they consider whether to promote Cooper Pratt to High-A.
  23. Thorough shellacking in Wisconsin’s 10-1 victory: - Scored each of first 4 innings for 10-0 lead, with all 9 players reaching base in the game, 8 via hit - Will Rudy went 5 innings strong, issuing no walks or HBPs and only 4 hits (HR, outfield single, 2 infield singles) - 4 doubles and 4-for-4 on SB attempts - Luke Adams reached base 4 times (1B, 3 BB), Gregory Barrios had 3 hits (and an SB) and Jheremy Vargas 3 RBIs and 2 SBs
  24. 4 shutout innings from Bishop Letson. 9-for-9 on stolen base attempts (led by Yhoswar Garcia and Daniel Guilarte who combined for 6!), while C David Garcia threw out both attempted stealers for the Hillcats. Yhoswar reached base 3 times (2B, 1B, HBP) and the team survived a Harrison Durow special (3 ER, 4 runners stranded in 2 IP). Congrats to Tyler Bryant on the 2-inning save.
  25. After taking the opening game of today's doubleheader to even their home series against South Bend 2-2, High-A Wisconsin sends 20-year old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (3.40 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 in 53 IP) to the mound for Game 2. Hall, Valerio and Rodriguez enter for Lara, Wood and Vargas. 1 - Barrios - SS 2 - Areinamo - 2B 3 - Garcia - CF 4 - Adams - 3B 5 - Hall - 1B 6 - Valerio - LF 7 - Chirinos - DH 8 - Rodriguez - C 9 - Fernandez - RF X - Herrera - P
