  1. Winter League Action from Tuesday, December 13 It was a combined 0-for-10 day with two losses, as Navaretto and Feliciano were notably stifled by old friend RHP Braden Webb. DH Jesus Chirinos – 0-for-3, walk (average dips to .338) – in Aguilas del Zulia’s 10-2 loss to Tigres C Brian Navarreto – 0-for-4, though he threw out the only basestealer (.333 average, 1.022 OPS) – in Carolina’s 3-0 defeat to Santurce DH Mario Feliciano – 0-for-3 (.193 average, .466 OPS) – also in Carolina’s defeat
  2. Thanks for the article! I'm assuming we'll get some "do-over" seasons from some key 2B/3B/SS prospects, repeating the same level they were at in 2022: Nearly-22-year old 2B Felix Valerio at AA Biloxi 23-year old 3B Ben Metzinger at A+ Wisconsin 24-year old SS Freddy Zamora at AA Biloxi And there's also eagle-eyed 2B/3B Gabe Holt, who essentially fell off a cliff in 2022 at Biloxi after skipping High-A ball. Hopefully all or most of these guys bounce back shockingly well, like how Cam Devanney did when repeating at AA Biloxi this past year.
  3. Joseph's probably watched him the most, but here's my limited view: Entering his 6th year in the system, with apparently limited positional versatility (somewhat surprisingly never tried at third base, despite coming in as a catcher), it seems likely to me that Chirinos will simply run out of time with the Brewers. He probably needs a 2023/24 power surge to have staying power with the organization beyond 2024. Of course, he's just 21 years old, so he has more room to improve, perform, keep advancing... He obviously figured something out in 2022 after some initial struggles and it's a sign of organizational confidence that they stuck with him as an everyday player: April 8 - July 11, 2022 in Low-A: .551 OPS in 290 PAs despite a .327 BABIP, with HRs in 1.0% of PAs and Ks in 35.9% of PAs July 12 - September 11, 2022 in Low-A: .944 OPS in 190 PAs with a .361 BABIP, with HRs in 4.7% of PAs and Ks in 25.3% of PAs
  4. Winter League Action from Monday, December 12 Only the Dominican Winter League played yesterday: RHP Elvis Peguero (save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K (lowered ERA to 2.16) – in Leones del Escogido’s 4-1 victory over Estrellas RHP JC Mejia – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K (lowered ERA to 2.55) – in Tigres del Licey’s 3-0 loss to Gigantes
  5. I’m really scared to believe this. But maybe we’re throwing in some major cash.
  6. Winter League Action from Sunday, December 11 There weren't many players in action on Sunday, but Jesus Chirinos and Arnaldo Hernandez continued their strong run of play: 1B/DH Jesus Chirinos – 2-for-6, walk, 2 RBIs (lowering average to .355); he also committed an error – in Aguilas del Zulia’s doubleheader sweep at the hands of Cardenales RHP Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K (lowering ERA to 1.17) – in Tiburones’ 5-3 victory over Caribes PH Jason Lopez – 0-for-1 (dropping average to .382) – in Bravos’ 13-6 loss to Leones del Caracas
  7. We hate the thought of it, but it obviously increases the odds that we trade Adames. If we feel the market is over-valuing shortstops, then maybe a trade is the logical move. I believe that at some point it’ll be accepted that top defensive shortstops will move around like a top cornerback, shifting to the pull side of hitters. Those shortstops with the willingness to be “on the spot” every play will be worth the extra pay.
  8. Winter League Action from Thursday, December 8 Jesus Chirinos and Brian Navaretto continued their solid play, but it was a rough day for the pitchers, including Matt Hardy’s first blemish. DH Jesus Chirinos – 3-for-5, double, 3 walks, 2 RBIs (hitting .352 with a .904 OPS) – in Aguilas del Zulia’s doubleheader split with Tiburones. Chirinos played a big role in Aguilas coming back from a 7-2 deficit win the opening game, then also coming back in the second game before it was blown in the final inning RHP Arnaldo Hernandez (win) – 2/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K (ERA up to 1.26) – got the win despite being part of blowing the lead, as Tiburones then came back to win the 2nd game of the doubleheader RHP Luis Contreras (loss) – 1/3 IP, 2 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K (ERA up to 7.71) – in Cardenales’ 7-5 loss to Navegantes C/DH Brian Navarreto – 0-for-1, 2 walks, HBP, RBI (hitting .341 with a 1.053 OPS) – exited in 7th inning for a pinch hitter while leading 12-5 – in Carolina’s 13-6 win over Ponce RHP Matt Hardy (loss) – 2/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 2 H, 1 BB, 0 K (ERA up to 1.10) – in Caguas’ 2-1 loss to Santurce
  9. Early Friday AM (US time): Brisbane wins yet again, 10-2 over Geelong-Korea, but Adelaide is keeping pace just 2 games back 2B Robert Moore - 1-for-5, HR, RBI - now hitting .268 with an OPS of .875 C Darrien Miller - 2-for-3, double, SF, 3 RBIs - now hitting .245 with an OPS of .763 RHP Cameron Wagoner (win) - 6 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 H, 1 BB, 9 Ks - dominant performance to lower ERA to 2.42 C Alex Hall was also in action for Perth, going 2-for-5 with a double, but they lost 10-8. He's hitting .367 with an OPS of .974.
  10. Early Thursday AM (US time): Brisbane continues to dominate the league, defeating Geelong-Korea 6-2 to move to 14-3 2B Robert Moore - 1-for-1, double, 2 walks, HBP - now hitting .273 with an OPS of .864 C Darrien Miller - 1-for-4, double - now hitting .220 with an OPS of .719. He also threw out the only attempted basestealer RHP Max Lazar (win) - 7 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks - terrific game to lower ERA to 3.91 RHP Justin King - 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks - lowering ERA to 3.52
  11. Your daily Brian Navarreto highlight:
  12. Winter League Action from Wednesday, December 7 Brian Navarreto is probably up for an award in the Puerto Rican League at this point. Elvis Peguero and Arnaldo Hernandez continue to put up solid winter league stats in relief. DH Brian Navarreto – 1-for-3, HR, walk, HBP, 2 RBIs (.346 average, 1.047 OPS – 5th homer for his club, a clutch 2-run blast to tie the game in the 7th inning) – in Carolina’s 5-4 victory over RA12 C Mario Feliciano – 0-for-3, walk (.184 average, .443 OPS), he also allowed two stolen bases – in Carolina’s win RHP Elvis Peguero – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks (2.45 ERA in 14 2/3 IP) – in Leones del Escogido’s 3-0 loss to Toros 2B Andruw Monasterio – 1-for-3, walk, RBI (hitting .303) – in Caribes’ 8-3 defeat to Bravos DH Jesus Chirinos – 1-for-4, RBI (hitting .327) – in Aguilas del Zulia’s 5-2 loss to Navegantes RHP Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K (ERA of 0.66 in 13 2/3 IP, bouncing back from a rough 2022 season in Biloxi) – in Tiburones’ 4-2 loss to Cardenales
  13. At first glance, you'd expect Collins to repeat AA (.221 / .337 / .347 slash last year), but the presence of Tyler Black and Felix Valerio will likely limit his opportunities at second base in Biloxi. So I wouldn't be surprised if's he's more of a AA/AAA rover, like Andruw Monasterio last year, in Collins' case filling OF/2B needs where they happen to arise. At least his 30 stolen bases in 2022 suggests that his .278 BABIP was lower than it'll usually be.
  14. Yeah, I'm agreeing that the odds of Varland making the ML roster are low. If by March 2023 we're not thrilled with him, we'd most likely DFA him, he'd go unclaimed and return to the Dodgers' minor league system like nothing ever happened. We selected Colin Walsh and Zack Jones in 2015. Walsh hit .085 through 47 ABs and was returned to the A's in June 2016, while Jones got injured, never appeared in a ML game, and was returned to Twins, also in June 2016.
  15. What an opportunity for the 26-year old Varland, from Maplewood, Minnesota (drafted from Concordia University, St. Paul by the A’s in the 14th round in 2018). He was terrific through his first 18 games (15 starts) in 2018/19 until an injury sidelined him July 1, 2019. Traded to the Dodgers in February 2021, he struggled in AA throughout 2021/22, until they moved him to the bullpen full time. 2022 as starter: 8.54 ERA, 7.9 K/9. 2022 as reliever: 4.67 ERA, 12.6 K/9. To me, from just a superficial review of the numbers, he seems like one of those picks where the team will see what they have over the next 4 months, then make a decision in March to keep or return. Odds of keeping: 20%.
  16. That’s it! 15 picks in the MLB phase: 13 pitchers, 2 hitters. Brewers add one, lose none.
  17. The Brewers have selected Gus Varland, RHP Dodgers, with the 14th pick (10th actual selection, since 4 teams opted to pass) of the Rule 5 Draft.
  18. OF/IF Korry Howell (Padres) is another interesting ex-Brewer that could be picked up. But 1B/3B Malcolm Nunez (Pirates) really jumps out for me. He hit quite well as a 21-year old in AA this year.
  19. Here's a friendly reminder that the Rule 5 Draft is today at 4:00pm CST. While most of us are focused on the potential loss of 25-year old SS/3B Cam Devanney (23 HRs in AA/AAA in 2022 - basically coming out of nowhere), MLB.com has highlighted two other Brewer minor leaguers who could be at risk of selection in the MLB phase: 24-year old RHP Victor Castaneda (3.97 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 9.3 K/9 in 106 2/3 IP at AA Biloxi in 2022 - most intriguing unprotected player 27-year old RHP Lucas Erceg - a former third baseman who converted to full time relief pitching in 2022 (after a rough start to 2022, from May 17th onward he posted a 2.85 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 47 1/3 IP, predominantly in AAA) - 15 prospects who could get taken
  20. Winter League Action from Tuesday, December 6 27-year old Brian Navarreto had another big day as he makes his case for increased playing time this year. C Brian Navarreto – 4-for-5, HR, double, 4 RBIs (lifting average to .346 and OPS to 1.010) – in Carolina’s 8-0 shellacking of Caguas 2B Andruw Monasterio – 1-for-5, triple, RBI (hitting .302) – in Caribes’ 6-5 loss to Leones del Caracas. Old friend RHP Carlos Luna (signed by Twins yesterday) actually made his first appearance for Monasterio’s team, conceding 4 runs in 2 2/3 innings DH Jesus Chirinos – 0-for-3, walk (still hitting .333) – in Aguilas del Zulia’s 9-0 win over Navegantes RHP Luis Contreras – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks (but ERA is 6.00) – in Cardenales’ 6-0 win over Tigres
  21. Winter League Action from Sunday, December 4 Navarreto and Monasterio made key contributions in their teams' victories, while Hardy remained perfect on the winter: C/DH Brian Navarreto – 4-for-6, double, walk, RBI. He also had an error and allowed 2 basestealers – in Carolina’s doubleheader split with Mayaguez DH Mario Feliciano – 0-for-3 – in Carolina’s 2-1 loss in the opening game against Mayaguez RHP Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks (ERA still 0.00) – in Caguas’ 4-0 victory over Ponce 2B Andruw Monasterio – 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs (raising average to .306), although he also committed 2 errors – in Caribes’ 5-4 win over Tigres DH Jesus Chirinos – 1-for-3, RBI. His 7th inning single tied the game, but he was left on deck in the 9th inning – in Aguilas del Zulia’s 2-1 defeat to Navegantes C Jason Lopez – 0-for-1 as a substitute in Bravos 12-4 loss to Leones del Caracas C Jose Sibrian – 1-for-4. He also threw out 2 of 4 basestealers – but his Cardenales team fell to Tiburones 14-2
  22. I worry a bit that Ruiz’ stats were propped up by bunt hits and infield hits (.392 BABIP in AAA/AA last year) that other MLB clubs will discount. Then our seeming terror to have him as the backup CF in a playoff chase (going with J. Davis instead) reduces his value even more. Finally his struggles in winter league ball (not K’ing, thankfully, but a .449 OPS in 49 PAs still isn’t pretty) could be another flag. In short, we may need him to cause a stir in spring training to re-gain his full value. Who knows…
  23. Anyone think we’d trade Frelick or Mitchell if it helps us get one good, young, controllable, cheap bat? We’ve got quite a number of lefty hitters, but we’ve not yet addressed our problem against left-handed pitching.
  24. I've no special knowledge on this, but my assumption is that there's no exemption for players who recently signed minor league deals (e.g. Chirino, Alvarez, Monasterio, Sibrian, Herb, Mejia, Myers). Some cash-poor teams and players may even pre-agree how to share the $24,500 which acquiring teams pay to select players in the Minor League phase. Did the Brewers really mind being paid to lose Kekai Rios last year? Note: As an example, RHP Jon Duplantier signed a minor league deal with the Giants on December 3, 2021 and was then selected by the Dodgers in the Minor League phase 5 days later.
  25. We never get to see the official 38-man AAA protected list, but here's my guess: SP (8): Castaneda, Jarvis, Puello, Boushley, Myers, Lazar, Bennett, Herb RP (11): Erceg, Garabitos, Andrews, Floyd, JC Mejia, Vassalotti, Hardy, Morales, Contreras, Geraldo, Schanuel C (3): Jackson, Navarreto, Diaz INF (10): Devanney, Valerio, E. Garcia, Alvarez, Dillard, Monasterio, Dorrian, Martinez, Chirinos, Jaraba OF (6): Rodriguez, Gray, Lutz, Bello, Cipion, Fernandez Odd men out (from my made-up list), with Gabe Holt being the player I bumped today for newly-signed Eddy Alvarez: Pitchers/Hitters who I think will be free agents after this season (9): Chirino, Bullock, A. Hernandez, Hitt, Ward, Baker, Lopez, Sibrian, Walden Others (16): Holt, Matulovich, Acosta, Cabrera, Vennaro, Cruz, McGee, Hall, Ferrer, Kahle, Leones, Perez, R. Garcia, Gillis, Mercado, Shapiro
