  1. Adding so many AAA-level pitchers (Junk, Miller, Stock, Pannone, Rea, Wiles, Myers, Peguero, Yeager, Claudio, Vieira) had me re-checking where I expect MILB pitchers to start the 2023 season. Here's what I've got for Starting Pitchers - 7-8 at each level to allow for injuries/trades: AAA: Jason Alexander, Janson Junk, LHP Ethan Small, LHP Robert Gasser, Caleb Boushley, Colin Rea, LHP Thomas Pannone AA: Victor Castaneda, Carlos F. Rodriguez (accelerated move), LHP Brandon Knarr, LHP Adam Seminaris, Justin Jarvis, LHP Russell Smith (sink or swim), LHP Nick Bennett High-A: Stiven Cruz, Joseph Hernandez, Alexander Cornielle, Israel Puello, Jeison Pena (others see as a reliever), Cameron Wagoner, Ryne Moore Low-A: Jacob Misiorowski, Logan Henderson, LHP Nate Peterson, Alexander Vallecillo, Yujanyer Herrera, Arielbi Gonzalez, Brailin Rodriguez (assuming full recovery), Edwin Jimenez
  2. Early Saturday AM: Brisbane was blasted 14-4 by Perth, who tied their semi-final playoff series 1-1. Expect RHP Cameron Wagoner to start the series-deciding game tomorrow. For Brisbane: 2B Robert Moore – 1-for-4, walk C Darrien Miller – 0-for-1, 2 walks, HBP; gave up 3 stolen bases and had an error RHP Brandon Jordan – 1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 K RHP Justin King – 2 1/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K For Perth: DH Alex Hall – 1-for-5
  3. Winter League Action from Friday, January 27 Tiburones de La Guaira jumped out to a 4-0 lead and defeated Leones del Caracas 8-2 to even the Venezuelan Championship Series at two games a piece, with Arnaldo Hernandez covering the 7th inning for the winners. RHP Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K – in Tiburones’ 8-2 victory over Leones
  4. Early Friday AM: Brisbane came back from a 2-0 deficit to win Game One of their semi-final series 3-2 over Perth, with Robert Moore and Darrien Miller contributing a sacrifice fly and RBI single, respectively. In the 9th inning, a walk and a single put James Meeker in a jam with one out, but he struck out Alex Hall, then came back from a 3-0 count to get Pete Kozma to fly out for the final out: For Brisbane 2B Robert Moore – 1-for-3, sac fly, RBI C Darrien Miller – 2-for-3, RBI RHP Max Lazar – 5 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks RHP James Meeker (save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks For Perth DH Alex Hall – 0-for-4
  5. Winter League Action from Thursday, January 26 Arnaldo Hernandez wasn’t sharp, but his Tiburones de La Guaira squad clawed a game back in the Venezuelan Championship Series, so now trail 2 games to 1. RHP Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 0 K – in Tiburones’ 7-1 victory over Leones del Caracas
  6. Winter League Action from Wednesday, January 25 It was heartbreak for Brian Navarreto’s Carolina club as they fell 2-1 in Game 7 of the Puerto Rican Championship Series. Down 2-0 entering the bottom of the 9th inning, they started with a single and double off old friend Braden Webb with nobody out, but only managed an RBI groundout from there, stranding the tying run at 3rd base to end the series. C Brian Navaretto – 0-for-4 – in Carolina’s 2-1 loss to Mayaguez
  7. Winter League Action from Tuesday, January 24 Brian Navarrato’s Carolina team lost a nail-biter to set up a winner-take-all Game 7 in the Puerto Rican Championship Series. In Venezuela, Arnaldo Hernandez was inexplicably left on the bench as Tiburones blew a 5-3 lead to Leones, falling 8-5 to trail their Championship Series 2 games to 0. C Brian Navarreto – 1-for-4 – in Carolina’s 2-1 loss to Mayaguez
  8. Isn’t this what we’ve all expected? Oh where oh where could the Astros find their new GM? Maybe the 37-year old who’s credited with positioning the Brewers as a perennial contender, and appears ready for a new challenge?
  9. Semi-final series Friday-Sunday, January 27-29:
  10. No Brewers featured in Monday Winter League action, but Arnaldo Hernandez's Tiburones club lost Game 1 of the Venezuelan Championship 8-6 to Leones.
  11. I’ll take this as a sign that we’re confident in Winker’s full, on-time recovery from knee and neck operations.
  12. No Brewers featured in Sunday Winter League action, but Brian Navarreto's Carolina club were victorious in Game 5 of the Puerto Rican Championship, taking a 3-2 lead in their Best-of-7 series.
  13. Winker played 219 games in left field over the past two seasons, so that's where he'll most likely play if/when he sees the field (e.g. when Yelich needs rest or is injured). I see Frelick (648 innings as CF, 221.1 as LF, 28 as RF in 2022) as more of a left fielder than a center fielder in the majors, given my understanding that his CF defense is inferior to Mitchell and Taylor. But who knows, maybe he'll prove me wrong and win the center field job by 2024. Also, Winker's a left-handed hitter, so him replacing the RHH Renfroe automatically reduces the need for a new, young left-handed hitter, especially in the outfield (like Frelick).
  14. It always felt like over-hype, but looking back at his stats I understand the reason for optimism. He outhit Braggs and Meyer in AA in 1985, then produced a 99 OPS+ in 63 PAs in the majors as a 21-year old that same year despite a .188 BABIP. The 12 BB / 16 K ratio was also decent in the limited MLB play. Then he had an .805 OPS through 131 PAs as a 22-year old in the majors in 1986 before the injury. This was enhanced by a .345 BABIP, but the 23 BB / 20 K ratio was solid. Unfortunately, the injuries from that point onward obviously limited him to AAAA status, never producing adequately in the majors.
  15. Early Sunday AM: Brisbane won its regular season finale 3-1 over Auckland, with Robert Moore hitting his 8th homer of the campaign and Justin King dancing through a lot of traffic in a rare start: 2B Robert Moore – 2-for-3, HR, walk, RBI (.294 AVG, .894 OPS) 1B Darrien Miller – played one inning, catching a line drive LHP Justin King – 1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks (5.79 ERA) Perth also won its regular season finale, defeating Melbourne 9-4, although Alex Hall did not play. I believe we’ll now see Brisbane and Perth face-off in a playoff semi-final series.
  16. Winter League Action from Saturday, January 21 Arnaldo Hernandez earned the victory as his squad clinched a spot in the Venezuelan Championship Series, while Brian Navaretto’s squad fell into a 2-2 tie in the Puerto Rican Championship Series. RHP Arnaldo Hernandez (win) – 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks – in Tiburones’ 8-5 win over Tigres C Brian Navaretto – 2-for-5; also allowed 2 stolen bases – in Carolina’s 7-3 loss to Mayaguez
  17. Early Saturday AM: Brisbane blew a 7-2 lead in the 10th inning of a 9-8 loss to Auckland before taking the second game of their doubleheader 4-2. Thankfully no Brewer pitcher was at fault for the shocking early loss, while James Meeker retained his perfect 0.00 ERA (in 21 innings!!) and Brannon Jordan won the second game: 2B Robert Moore – 2-for-8, SF, RBI (.287 AVG, .862 OPS) C Darrien Miller – 1-for-4 (.266 AVG, .812 OPS); threw out 1 of 2 basestealers RHP Cameron Wagoner – 5 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks (3.26 ERA) RHP James Meeker – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks (0.00 ERA) RHP Brannon Jordan (win) – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks (1.57 ERA) Alex Hall homered to start a final inning rally in Perth’s 6-5 walk-off win over Melbourne which clinched a playoff spot, then added two more RBIs in their 7-6 victory in the second game: DH/C Alex Hall – 3-for-7, HR, double, 3 RBIs (.360 AVG, 1.066 OPS); also gave up one stolen base
  18. Winter League Action from Friday, January 20 Carolina stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Mayguez 5-4 in walk-off fashion, giving them a 2-1 edge in the Puerto Rican Championship. Brian Navarreto drove in Carolina’s first run with an RBI double in the 6th inning. Old friend Braden Webb took the tough loss for Mayaguez. C Brian Navarreto – 1-for-4, double, RBI
  19. I’d love to see the young talent flourish and excite the fans, but I’m refusing to get my hopes up for early call-ups. The Winker pick-up signaled to me that they’ll wait on Frelick. And now the Anderson signing tells me we’ll also wait on Turang. I’m ready for CC to play Anderson a LOT early in the year (3B against righties, RF against lefties), with a bench of Brosseau, Hiura, Toro and Caratini.
  20. “Outfielder Sal Frelick, the Journal Sentinel's second-ranked prospect in the organization, said he expects to begin the season at Class AAA Nashville. ‘I would like to say start off in Triple-A and if I play well I'd like to get a call (to the majors) at some point,’ Frelick said.” https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2023/01/19/willy-adames-freddy-peralta-both-hoping-to-take-part-in-upcoming-wbc/69812397007/
  21. Early Friday AM: Brisbane’s already clinched a spot in the playoffs, so it’s not surprising that they’ve taken their foot off the gas, losing 6-0 to Auckland today. 2B Robert Moore – 1-for-3, (.289 AVG, .887 OPS) RHP Max Lazar (loss) – 4 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 7 H, 0 BB, 3 K (3.72 ERA) Perth also fell 7-3 to Melbourne today and is now one game behind Adelaide in their division, though they are still in playoff position. C Alex Hall – 0-for-4, (.356 AVG, 1.047 OPS); also gave up one stolen base
  22. No Brewers featured in Winter League Action on Thursday, January 19. Brian Navarreto's Carolina club (Puerto Rico) had the day off, while Arnaldo Hernandez's Tiburones team (Venezuela) dropped a 13-6 contest to put them in jeopardy of missing out on the Championship Series. Navaretto should play on Friday, Hernandez on Saturday.
  23. 36-year old Wade Miley will earn more than to-be-35-year old Aroldis Chapman. Interesting times! This should probably unlock a few more LHP reliever signings as well (Chafin, Moore, Smith, etc.). https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/01/royals-to-sign-aroldis-chapman.html
  24. I think Turang is the big X factor. He probably needs to prove he’s a better defensive second baseman than Urias to make the Opening Day roster: C - Contreras, Caratini IF - Adames, Tellez, Urias, Anderson, Brosseau, Hiura, Toro OF - Yelich, Mitchell, Taylor, Winker SP - Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Miley, Houser RP - Williams, Bush, Ashby, Strzelecki, Milner, Guerra, Varland
  25. Winter League Action from Wednesday, January 18 It was an excellent day for the three Brewers still actively participating in the Winter League playoffs. RHP Arnaldo Hernandez (win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks – in Tiburones’ 4-0 defeat of Navegantes, moving his club back into a first-place tie in the very tight Round Robin playoffs. They have two games remaining in this round, with four clubs all within 1.5 games of each other C Brian Navarreto – 1-for-5 – in Carolina’s 6-4 win over Mayaguez RHP JC Mejia’s Tigres del Licey’s squad clinched the Dominican League Championship with a 2-1 extra inning victory over Estrellas, although he didn’t play in the final
