  1. After a rain delay in the top of the 6th inning, which I feared might simply be a prelude to declaring the game final as a 4-2 loss for the Shuckers, play resumed with a 1B Zavier Warren single and SS Cam Devanney game-tying 2-run homer, his 17th of the year and first since July 30th. It's 4-4 going into the final 3.5 scheduled innings between Biloxi and Montgomery.
  2. RHP Lucas Erceg gets the start in Game Two of Nashville's doubleheader in Jacksonville, looking to continue his good form (scoreless over last 7 innings with 10 Ks) and help clinch a 5-1 series win. CF Esteury Ruiz has a 10-game hitting streak:
  3. RHP Tyler Herb completes the 7-inning shutout of Jacksonville. Sounds win 7-0. One more 7-inning game to play tonight.
  4. CF Corey Ray snaps an 0-for-21 skid with an RBI single for Biloxi in the top of the 3rd inning to tie the game, followed by an Andrew Monasterio sacrifice fly. It's 2-1 Shuckers.
  5. Hmmm. SS Pablo Reyes has exited in the bottom of the 4th inning with what I can only imagine is an injury. But showing how committed they are to giving Brice Turang time at third base, it's Weston Wilson who comes in to play shortstop, his first such action at short this season. Sounds lead 5-0 in the 5th inning of this 7-inning doubleheader opener.
  6. Having finished off the remaining innings of yesterday's suspended game, Biloxi and Montgomery now follow-up with full 9-inning face-off. RHP TJ Shook (3.86 ERA in High-A/AA) gets the start, knowing a win is needed to salvage a 3-3 series split. DH/SS Andruw Monasterio's on-base streak has now reached 20 games:
  7. RHP Justin Jarvis faced consistent traffic, but kept the Timber Rattlers in the game by limiting Cedar Rapids to just 2 runs in 5 1/3 innings (exiting with a man on first). Wisconsin's offense woke up in the top half of that inning to tie it 2-2 on a Pinero double, two singles (Mercado bunt, Metzinger normal) and a wild pitch. However, the game went immediately south with Jarvis' exit, as the Kernels rocked RHP Joey Matulovich with 2 homers, a triple and 2 walks to take a 7-2 lead. It's now 7-3 in the top of the 8th inning after a C Darrien Miller solo homer.
  8. And RHP Jeison Pena retired 6 of 7 batters to close out the 2-inning save for a 6-2 Carolina win. That's a 6-0 series sweep of Fayetteville!!
  9. Something tells me the Sounds are still buzzing after that Friday dust-up with Jacksonville, as they've opened up tonight's Game One with 5 consecutive hits to score 4 runs (Frelick double, blazing Ruiz infield single, Turang RBI single, Singleton 2-RBI double, Reyes RBI single). Show no mercy!!
  10. 2B Eric Brown Jr. and 1B Jesus Chirinos have added insurance runs for the Mudcats with 2 solo homers in the top of the 8th inning. It's now 6-2. That's Brown's 3rd homer of the year and I really don't remember the scouting profile saying that he had this much pop. It's awesome!
  11. Hello, DH/INF Alberis Ferrer! After the Woodpeckers tied up the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the 7th inning, Ferrer comes through with a 2-run homer in the bottom half in just his 2nd game back from injury. RHP Jeison Pena has come in to pitch the 8th inning. Carolina leads 4-2.
  12. AAA Nashville leads their series in Jacksonville 3-1, which will conclude with a doubleheader today. RHP Tyler Herb starts the opener, aiming to continue his solid run (2.45 ERA over last 33 innings). CF Sal Frelick comes in with a 10-game on-base streak:
  13. That’s a solid Low-A debut for RHP Yujanyer Herrera, giving up just 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings. Carolina leads Fayetteville 2-1 going into the 6th inning, with RHP Miguel Guerrero coming on in relief after a rain delay. RF Hedbert Perez has a solo homer, his 15th blast of 2022.
  14. Biloxi’s “continuation game” from yesterday is underway, picking up in the top of the 5th inning with our team trailing Montgomery 11-2. They’ll play a 7-inning game thereafter which I’d bet will be more competitive.
  15. Brosseau appears determined to prove that he’s also not the answer to our needs. C’mon men!
  16. High-A Wisconsin has lost 4 of 5 games in Cedar Rapids this week and has RHP Justin Jarvis (3.97 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 115 2/3 innings) starting as they try to salvage the final game. SS Eduardo Garcia has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games:
  17. Carolina's 5-game winning streak has brought them to within 2.5 games of a second half playoff spot and just-turned-19-year old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (5.36 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 9.5 K/9 in 43 2/3 ACL innings) makes his Low-A debut today at home against Fayetteville. 1B Jesus Chirinos has an 8-game on-base streak:
  18. Puello actually did well to minimize that first inning damage, but conceded a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning and he's done for the day after just 2 innings (59 pitches). It's 3-3 with RHP Christian Tripp in to relieve.
  19. Bad start for Puello though: 2 singles and 2 walks, nobody out. He was promoted from Low-A Carolina despite a 5.51 ERA in part because of his terrific 61 K / 17 BB ratio in 49 innings, but this level of ball appears to be a giant leap. He now has 26 walks in 40 High-A innings.
  20. SS Eduardo Garcia comes through with a clutch 2-out, 3-run homer in the top of the 1st inning, with the young Tayden Hall on deck. 3-0 Timber Rattlers. Thank you for putting player development first and not intentionally walking Garcia, Cedar Rapids! Oh, Hall was then called out on strikes.
  21. Down 11-2 in the top of the 5th inning, Biloxi's Gabe Holt (making his 1st-ever minor league outfield start) led off the inning with a double (his first extra base hit since June 16th - man, what a rough season for him) and then a rain delay halted action while CF Corey Ray was up to bat.
  22. After winning today's opening game, Wisconsin now only trails 3-1 in their road series at Cedar Rapids, with 21-year old RHP Israel Puello (5.66 ERA in Low-A/High-A) ready to make his 9th appearance since promotion to High-A. With CF Jackson Chourio and C Jeferson Quero both getting some rest, 19-year old 9th round draft pick 1B/C/OF Tayden Hall has been pulled in for a surprising Wisconsin debut, while INF Jose Acosta is making his first-ever minor league outfield start in his 242nd game: 1 - Darrien Miller - DH 2 - Ben Metzinger - 3B 3 - Wes Clarke - C 4 - Joe Gray Jr. - CF 5 - Eduardo Garcia - SS 6 - Tayden Hall - 1B 7 - Ethan Murray - 2B 8 - Jose Acosta - RF 9 - Arbert Cipion - LF X - Israel Puello - P
  23. Actually, it's RHP Robbie Baker who was called for the 6-out save, which he pulled off with aplomb: 2 scoreless innings, 3 Ks. Wisconsin also added an insurance run in the top of the 9th inning on a Joe Gray Jr. (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) RBI infield single. It seems like forever ago (well, yesterday actually) that Gray and Wes Clarke each homered to give the Timber Rattlers their initial lead. Now onto the nightcap - Game Two of today's Wisconsin-Cedar Rapids doubleheader awaits.
  24. 30-year old LHP Andy Otero from Panama was a terrific find by the Brewers, signing as a minor league free agent in May 2021, serving as a highly dependable starter for AA Biloxi that year and then contributing meaningful long relief innings for AAA Nashville throughout much of 2022. Originally signed as an international free agent way back in 2009 by the Braves, he was in their system up to 2015, when he was solid in High-A ball (2.58 ERA in 59 1/3 IP) but then disappeared from the baseball scene until some winter league appearances from late 2018 to early 2021. On a terrible (45-69 - sorry friends!) Biloxi team last year, Otero was a major bright spot, producing a 5-0 record and 2.10 ERA in 51 1/3 IP and an 11.4 K/9, though he struggled mightily when given a chance in AAA (9.15 ERA in 20 2/3 IP). This year, he did everything asked of him, throwing 68 1/3 IP in 23 appearances (6 starts), with 34 IP in AA (mainly starts) and 34 1/3 IP in AAA (all in relief). The ERA was solid (3.42) and WHIP was respectable (1.38), but his strikeout numbers are down (6.6 K/9). Presumably not being confident enough to use Otero as a starter or lock-down reliever in AAA ball, the Brewers have made the decision to move on. Thank you Andy Otero for your terrific work. We hope that you find tremendous success in your upcoming conquests, inside and outside of baseball.
