  1. Agreed that it's essentially a complete team letdown, except for Freddy. We had 1 extra base hit and the Cubs had 2. Our relievers couldn't hold 3 leads. And I agree that CC seemed to sleepwalk through yesterday's excruciating loss (zero pinch hit situations in a back-and-forth affair??), so I was happy to at least see some attempted in-game moves today. With Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Adames and Renfroe, I still believe that we can compete. But we're running out of time.
  2. In better news, LHP Karlos Morales gave Wisconsin 2 scoreless, hitless relief innings after RHP Zach Mort had given up 2 runs in 2 innings. So they're through 7 innings, with Wisconsin holding on to a 5-2 lead. Is it RHP James Meeker time?
  3. Gulp. Bennett was pulled after just 8 hitters (38 pitches), unable to escape the 1st inning. It looks like a bullpen game, as RHP Kent Hasler is in. Shuckers trail 6-2.
  4. Vassalotti got the job done, as he always does, preserving Carolina's 3-1 victory, their 5th straight over Fayetteville. His season ERA is now down to 2.23. Yesterday was 1B Branlyn Jaraba Day (6 RBIs) and today he came through again with a big 5th inning RBI double to knot the contest 1-1, before the Woodpeckers fell apart a bit (walk, error, hit batsmen, walk) to gift the Mudcats a 2nd run. SS Eric Brown Jr. was beaned twice and knocked in the last run on a sacrifice fly. 3B Jadher Areinamo (single, walk) and C Jose Sibrian (single, walk) each reached base twice.
  5. RF Garrett Whitley got Biloxi off to an excellent start with a 2-run homer in the top of the 1st inning, plating DH/SS Andruw Monasterio (who's always always always on base as the team's most consistent offensive threat). But LHP Nick Bennett has given up 3 runs on 3 singles, a walk and a hit batsmen to now put the Shuckers in an early 3-2 hole.
  6. Starting RHP Alexander Cornielle wasn't as sharp as usual (e.g. 5 walks), but still limited the damage to just 1 earned run in 5 innings. LHP Leoni De La Cruz was fabulous in 3 innings of scoreless relief. RHP Michele Vassalotti (promote this man) is on for the attempted save.
  7. Let's keep it up, future stars!: Carolina 3, Fayetteville 1 - top of the 9th inning Wisconsin 5, Cedar Rapids 2 (continuation game from yesterday) - top of the 7th inning Biloxi 2, Montgomery 1 - bottom of the 1st inning (oh, but the bases are loaded with 1 out against Bennett)
  8. We desperately need Yelich to come through in ducks-on-the-pond, less-than-2-out situations. An RBI groundout or sacrifice fly just aren't enough: Yesterday: 6th inning, down 6-5, 2-on, 1-out: RBI groundout Today: 10th inning, up 4-3, 2-on, nobody out: strikeout If our leadoff hitter can't collect a hit in these situations, it'll be very difficult to find enough offense for this stretch run.
  9. The Timber Rattlers’ “continuation game” is underway. They pick up play in Cedar Rapids in the bottom of the 4th inning, Wisconsin leading 5-0. RHP Zach Mort has come in to pitch.
  10. AA Biloxi is tied 2-2 In their road series in Montgomery, with LHP Nick Bennett (4.87 seasons ERA) making his 20th AA start of the season. 1B Thomas Dillard has a 7-game on-base streak:
  11. Funny how the ump wants to get home early too. Calling the high strike for Suter, low and wide strike to Yelich here.
  12. Once again, I see no rational reason for letting Suter face this 4th batter (Contreras), unless CC just wants to get back to the hotel quicker.
  13. Well, Urias battled at least to get Stroman up to 84 pitches. Now the Cubs have to decide whether to leave Stroman in against two lefties (Narvaez, Yelich) next inning, or bring in a lefty. Of course, a lefty would probably have to face Caratini and Brosseau.
  14. Hiura seems to have been hitting that low strike lately, moreso than high strikes of course. And I don’t see them pulling Stroman to bring in a lefty if Hiura pinch hits, similar to what the Dodgers recently did, given Stroman’s low pitch count. One could justify having him hit for Urias here, but of course we’ll just do nothing.
  15. Amazing 20-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.28 season ERA with 120 Ks in 96 2/3 innings) gets the start as Low-A Carolina aims for a 5th straight win at home over Fayetteville. Veteran C Jose Sibrian has a 6-game hitting streak:
  16. - C Nick Kahle assigned to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi - LHP Andy Otero released from AAA Nashville - C Jakson Reetz cleared waivers and declined an outright assignment, becoming a free agent
  17. - C Mario Feliciano optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers - C Tayden Hall assigned to High-A Wisconsin from ACL Brewers Blue That’s quite the opportunity for the 19-year old, recent 9th round draft pick Hall, though it’s presumably because C Jeferson Quero is unavailable and 1B/C Wes Clarke is probably not fit to catch either as he’s just coming back from a recent injury
  18. I guess we’re following yesterday’s template, with 3 DSL losses to be followed by an undefeated night for the full season squads. DSL Brewers-2 led both of their games 2-1 late against DSL Phillies White, giving up a tying run in the final scheduled inning of Game One and losing it in extra innings 3-2, then giving up a 4-spot in the penultimate inning of their second game to ultimately lose 7-2. Having their Manfred Man picked off 2nd base was a novel way to blow the opener. Five errors in the second game meant that the first 4 runs were unearned. By contrast, DSL Brewers-1 might be jealous that their brethren at least held some leads, as they were shutout by DSL Phillies Red 6-0. Bright spots: - C Eric Martinez hit a 2-run homer to lift his season OPS to .817. - RHP Daniel Corniel allowed no earned runs (though 4 unearned runs came across), just 3 hits, no walks and K’d 5 batters in 5 innings of work. - OF Duncan Garcia (season OPS of .711) had two hits and a walk, while also throwing out a runner at 2nd base.
  19. With only two more days of DSL and ACL games after today, I assume we won’t see 2022 debuts of Jacob Misiorowski, Will Rudy, Nate Peterson, Aidan Maldonado, Will Childers or Mason Vinyard. The most we can probably hope for is a few ACL players move up to Low-A Carolina, e.g. Tyler Woessner, Cameron Wagoner, Matthew Wood (if healthy), Satchell Norman, Dylan O’Rae, Quinton Low, Tayden Hall, Daniel Guilarte.
  20. Well, that’s a pleasant box score to see. ACL Brewers Gold was down 3-1 with nobody on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, but had 5 straight hitters come through, the last being Kaylan Nicasia with a walk-off 3-run homer for a 6-3 win. That’s his 6th blast of 2022, although he was 1-for-5 in the game. Dylan O’Rae reached base 4 times, Luke Adams 3 times. Tyler Woessner also threw 3 scoreless innings as he furthers his case for a move to Carolina.
  21. Cool. Cool. All good. This just gave Robinson a chance to notch his 5th strikeout of the night to end the game. Solid job!!
  22. Arrghhhh. Cam Robinson retired 5 straight batters and got the 6th hitter to ground harmlessly to first baseman Thomas Dillard, who booted it. That was supposed to be a classic 6-up, 6-down Cam Robinson save for a 5-4 win! C'mon! The next batter walked of course, so now we have drama with Robinson forced to throw far more pitches than necessary.
