  1. Rotation. Remember he held up well in 3 games (2 starts) in AAA last year. Small, Alexander, Boushley, File, Castaneda, Lindblom. This is all speculation, of course.
  2. If the rumors are true of promotions of Antoine Kelly and Justin Jarvis, I’d watch for Carlos F. Rodriguez to jump to High-A and Victor Castaneda to scoot up to AAA. Clearly Sal Frelick and possibly also Garrett Mitchell should get the call to AAA Nashville, where the outfield is something of a patchwork after the departures of David Dahl and Abraham Almonte.
  3. Isn’t Hendry Mendez the guy which was announced as going on the injured list earlier in the year, only to see the tweet deleted an hour later and him back in the lineup 1-2 days later? Let’s hope “Gumby” does it again. Prayers up.
  4. That’s awesome. Blasted the first pitch off the Medical Arts Pharma and Hearing Center.
  5. Bold strategy to intentionally walk Sal Frelick in the bottom of the 11th inning to get to Andruw Monasterio. Wham Bam Grand Slam. 6-2 Shucker victory. Monasterio’s season OPS in AA is now .999.
  6. Despite the scary injury to Hendry Mendez, the leaping theft of a potential Eduarqui Fernandez home run, the concession of 2 seventh inning runs to allow Fayetteville to tie it up 4-4, and then having a player thrown out at home in the 10th inning, the Carolina Mudcats still managed to win 5-4 in extra innings. 1B Jesus Chirinos hit the go-ahead RBI double, then RHP Brannon Jordan didn't allow any balls out of the infield in a 3-up, 3-down 10th inning.
  7. After his 2nd major league spot start (63 pitches on Tuesday), LHP Ethan Small (3.34 season ERA in AAA) returns AAA Nashville which leads their home series 4-1 against Charlotte. SS Brice Turang is having a terrific month (.994 July OPS) and comes in with a 10-game hitting streak:
  8. After an extra inning loss last night, Biloxi needs a win tonight to clinch a 4-2 series victory at home over Montgomery. RHP Victor Castaneda will start the finale, looking for a repeat of his performance on Tuesday (6 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks). Amazing 3B Cam Devanney reached base in all five plate appearances and hit his 16th homer yesterday, improving his season slash to .278 / .357 / .512:
  9. Wagoner looks like he certainly wants to be a Brewer.
  10. Hendry Mendez must have gotten injured on a ball hit to to him in right field in the 2nd inning, which ultimately resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Fayetteville. Dang it.
  11. LHP Russell Smith aims for a 2nd straight quality start against Cedar Rapids (6 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 3 BB on Tuesday), and a win which would give the Timber Rattlers a 3-3 series split. LF Tristan Peters has multiple hits in 6 straight games:
  12. After 2 consecutive 1-run losses, Carolina needs a win in Fayetteville today to split the series 3-3. RHP Alexander Cornielle (season ERA 3.84) looks for his 2nd win of the week over the Woodpeckers. RF Hendry Mendez has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games:
  13. Yeah, the Astros make sense as a Severino landing spot if they believe Jason Castro will be out a while but ultimately return for the playoffs. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-sports-nation/astros/article/Houston-Astros-Jason-Castro-knee-injury-status-17323871.php
  14. Nashville made Charlotte sweat a bit, but couldn’t complete the comeback, losing 7-5. Pablo Reyes exited early after being hit by a pitch in the 8th inning. Something to monitor.
  15. Maybe Tampa would like C Pedro Severino to give them a boost during the stretch run, given Mejia being injured at the moment and knowing they’ve got Bethancourt anyway for expanded September rosters plus playoffs. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/rays-looking-for-catching-help.html
  16. DFA’d by Tampa after striking out 8 of 10 hitters faced with AAA Durham (fly out, walk for remaining two). I doubt it, but maybe we’ll try the old claim-waive-outright-keep game. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/rays-designate-angel-perdomo-for-assignment.html
  17. I don’t think we’d diminish Hiura’s trade value by using up his final option year just weeks before the trade deadline, then trade him at the same deadline. So I really think Hiura will be around for the remainder of this season, either mashing in AAA or as a situational bench bat when MLB rosters expand. And he’ll be some team’s regular DH in 2023. Oh, he also hit a game-winning 3-run homer tonight in Nashville.
  18. Stearns must be waiting for the trade deadline to shake out - e.g. in case Jonathan Davis ends up back in AAA. Otherwise, there’s not much sense to me in keeping Frelick and Mitchell down while Whitley gets a bunch of starts. Nothing against Whitley.
  19. Whoa. Luis Contreras escapes a bases loaded jam in the top of the 10th inning, then Sal Frelick hits the first pitch in the bottom half of the inning to plate Manfred’s ghost (Gabe Holt) and win 10-9!
  20. Vennaro allowed a double and a walk, but no runs in the top of the 9th inning. Noah Campbell, Felix Valerio and Yeison Coca are due up, 9-9 in the bottom of the 9th.
  21. Dylan File and Trevor Kelley pitched the final 4 scoreless innings in Nashville’s 4-2 win. Kelley’s season ERA in AAA is now 0.39.
  22. Down 2-1 with 2 outs in the 9th inning, Carolina’s Hendry Mendez singled and Herbert Perez reached via an error on the right fielder. Eduardo Garcia is now up…but K’s to end the game.
  23. A Garrett Mitchell sacrifice fly ties it 9-9 in Biloxi. Zach Vennaro comes on to pitch the top of the 9th inning.
  24. Sal Frelick walks and moves to 3rd base with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th inning. He represents the tying run, down 9-8.
