  1. If it's truly a split contract, then we should expect Mr. Gott to be with the organization for the season as such players tend to stay around even after a DFA and outright, earning the minor league rate stipulated in the split contract. Spangenberg, Petricka, Nieuwenhuis and Healy had split contracts somewhat recently.
  2. Rafters Blow Yet Another Game, 10-9 to Scorpions. Jarvis, Hintzen, Floyd All Struggle This time the Rafters built a 6-1 lead by the 6th inning before collapsing to trail 9-8 by the 8th inning. Their batsmen showed some spirit by re-tying the game in the 9th inning, before losing on a walk-off single in the 10th. Brewer pitchers were at the center of it, covering the 5th to 8th innings, with each of Jarvis, Hintzen and Floyd giving up home runs. On the bright side, Joe Gray Jr. doubled his AFL hit total, while David Hamilton was effective off the bench. To complete the Yahtzee, two Rafters were ejected (frustrated by 5-game losing streak?): Michael Toglia in the 5th inning, Brett Baty in the 8th inning. Joe Gray Jr. - CF - 1-3, double, 2 walks, 3 RBI David Hamilton - PH/DH - 2-2 Justin Jarvis - 2.0 innings, 3 earned runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 Ks, 1 wild pitch J.T. Hintzen - 1.0 inning, 1 earned run, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 HBP, 1 K Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 4 earned runs, 4 hits, 1 walk, 0 Ks, 1 wild pitch https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-scorpions/2021/11/02/667397#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667397
  3. Rafters Blow 5-0 Lead, Fall to Desert Dogs 8-5. Good and Bad Abner Uribe on Display Salt River cruised through two innings, jumping out to a 5-0 lead while Brewer starter Abner Uribe dominated: 4 Ks, 2 ground-outs, no baserunners. Then the wheels unfortunately came off in the top of the 3rd inning for Mr. Uribe: HBP, BB, BB, balk for a run, dropped fly ball error for a run, single for 2 runs, exit for reliever who allowed 1 inherited runner to score. The Rafters never scored again, while Glendale scored 3 in the 5th/6th innings. David Hamilton - second baseman - 1-4, double Abner Uribe - 2.0 innings, 5 runs (4 earned), 1 hit, 2 walks, 1 HBP, 4 Ks, 1 balk https://www.mlb.com/gameday/desert-dogs-vs-rafters/2021/11/01/667410#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667410
  4. Rafters Drop Third Straight 1-Run Decision, 5-4 to Desert Dogs (SS David Hamilton Debuts) Salt River grabbed a 4-2 lead in the top of the 5th inning, but Glendale battled back with 3 runs in the 5th and 6th, then kept the Rafters off the scoreboard from there. David Hamilton had a successful debut, Joe Gray Jr. still can't buy a hit and Taylor Floyd threw one solid inning. David Hamilton - SS - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 SB Joe Gray Jr. - CF - 0-4 Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 walk, 2 Ks https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-desert-dogs/2021/10/30/667319#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667319
  5. Rafters Lose Second Straight Walk-Off, 6-5 to Javelinas (Hintzen Injured and Takes Loss) For the second game in a row, the Rafters clawed back from an early deficit, only to blow it in the late innings. First baseman Michael Toglia (Rockies - 23rd overall pick in 2019) blasted a 3-run homer in the 6th to take a 3-2 lead. Down 4-2 and facing their final out, the Javelinas hit consecutive doubles to send the game to extra innings. J.T. Hintzen got the call leading 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th, then walked a batter, got hit by a line drive and came out of the game. With the bases loaded (free runner to start the inning) and nobody out, 20-year old Brewer Lun Zhao stepped in and old friend Cooper Hummel promptly allowed a passed ball to tie the game. An intentional walk re-loaded the bases and Zhao tried again to stage a Great Escape, nearly doing so: ground balls to second and shortstop resulted in both runners being thrown out at home. However, a single to center field ended the game at 6-5. J.T. Hintzen took the loss - 0.0 innings, 2 runs (1 earned), 1 hit, 1 walk, 0 Ks Lun Zhao - 0.2 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk (intentional), 0 Ks https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-javelinas/2021/10/29/667323#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667323
  6. - RHP Alec Kenilvort has retired. The 28-year old Kenilvort was drafted by the Rockies in 2014 and reached Low-A ball in 2016 before being cut. He started 2017 in independent ball (Schaumburg of the Frontier League) before the Brewers signed him in July 2017. Though he struggled the remainder of 2017 at Low-A Wisconsin, he DID post a 13.5 K/9 in 17.1 innings. However, 2018 was a bit of a breakout at High-A Carolina, where he threw 68.0 innings and registered a 4.24 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, perhaps focusing less on strikeouts (8.7 K/9) and more on control. Unfortunately, that was the last time Mr. Kenilvort pitched for the Brewers, as injuries and Covid wiped out the past 3 seasons. Best of luck to Alec.
  7. Rafters Give Up 4 in 9th to Lose on Walk-Off 8-7 to Saguaros The Rafters clawed back from a 4-0 second inning deficit, scoring 1 in the 5th, 2 in the 7th and then pulling ahead 7-4 via 4 runs in top of the 9th, only to give it all back and lose on a walk-off 2-out single. Brett Baty (Mets' 21-year old third baseman drafted 12th overall in 2019) hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th to grab the temporary lead. Joe Gray's misery continues (0-4, 3 Ks), while Taylor Floyd was the only other Brewer to see action. Joe Gray Jr. - 0-4, 1 walk (1 hit in 26 AFL at-bats = .038 AVG) Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 K https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-saguaros/2021/10/28/667318#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667318
  8. Tovar's Homer Propels Rafters to 3-2 Victory over Scorpions (Wiemer - 3 More Hits) Ezequiel Tovar (Rockies' 20-year old shortstop) hit a second inning 3-run homer to take a 3-1 lead, which held up largely due to the Rafters' bullpen. Joey Wiemer continued his torrid run at the plate (3 hits). Mario Feliciano also had a hit, while three Brewer pitchers contributed (Jarvis, Uribe, Hintzen). Joey Wiemer - RF - 3-4 Mario Feliciano - C - 1-4 Justin Jarvis - started and was credited with the win - 2.0 innings, 1 run (earned), 1 hit, 2 walks, 1 HBP, 1 K Abner Uribe - 1.0 inning, 1 run (earned), 1 hit, 2 walks, 3 Ks, 1 wild pitch J.T. Hintzen - 1.0 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 Ks Feliciano threw out 1 of 2 runners trying to steal, while having no passed balls https://www.mlb.com/gameday/scorpions-vs-rafters/2021/10/27/667326#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667326
  9. Seven players released from DSL clubs, including one who appeared likely to pitch in ACL before being suspended for the year: - RHP Edinson Mejia (participated in 2021 MILB spring training in Arizona) - 20 years old - last pitched in 2019 - 9.0 innings, 5.00 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, 13.0 K/9 - 2B Sebastian Burciaga - 20 years old - .590 OPS in 321 PAs over 2019 and 2021 seasons. Burciaga showed promise in 2019 (.652 OPS, with 16 stolen bases and only 33 Ks in 243 PAs), but he never got going in 2021 - SS Angel Bautista - 19 years old - .584 OPS in 236 PAs over 2019 and 2021 seasons - OF Isaac Curbata - 19 years old - .536 OPS in 139 PAs over 2019 and 2021 seasons - OF Bryan Nino - 19 years old - .482 OPS in 279 PAs over 2019 and 2021 seasons - C Henry Leon - 19 years old - .396 OPS in 89 PAs over 2019 and 2021 seasons - RHP Erik Ozuna - 19 years old - 6.0 innings pitched in 2021 - 30.00 ERA, 5.00 WHIP, 4.5 K/9
  10. Wiemer Reaches Base 5 Times (Again!) as Rafters Crush Scottsdale Scorpions 8-1 The Rafters scored in each of the first 3 innings to take a 4-1 lead and then never looked back. After reaching base on all 5 appearances on Friday, Joey Wiemer reached on 5 of 6 appearances today (3-4, 2 walks), while Taylor Floyd also threw a clean inning in the 'pen. Eric Da La Rosa (Tigers' 24-year old OF) homered for the second straight game, while Ryan Vilade (Rockies' 22-year old utility man) went 4-5 with a walk. Joey Wiemer - RF - 3-4, 2 walks, 1 SB Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 Ks Wiemer also threw out a runner headed to third base in the first inning https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-scorpions/2021/10/23/667329#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667329
  11. Wiemer Wiemer Wiemer: Article on MLB.com: https://www.mlb.com/amp/news/joey-wiemer-impresses-early-in-arizona-fall-league.html?__twitter_impression=true Single: Double: Another single: HBP:
  12. Wiemer's 4 Hits, Zhao's 2.1 Scoreless Innings Aren't Enough, Rafters Fall to Mesa Solar Sox 9-5 Abner Uribe got the start and gave up 3 runs in the first inning. Joey Wiemer (2 doubles, 2 singles, 1 HBP), Mario Feliciano and company kept it close, cutting a 6-1 deficit to 6-5, but could get no closer. Lun Zhao's 2.1 hitless innings strengthen his case to start 2022 in Low-A, while Joe Gray Jr.'s AFL nightmare continues. Joey Wiemer - 4-4, 2 doubles, HBP, 1 SB Mario Feliciano - 1-3, 1 RBI Joe Gray Jr. - 0-3, HBP Abner Uribe took the loss - 2.0 innings, 3 earned runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, 4 Ks Lun Zhao - 2.1 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 walk, 1 K Wiemer got an outfield assist, though it was on a long pickle play JGJ and Uribe each had an error, while Feliciano had two passed balls JGJ also got thrown out at home trying to score from 2nd on a single in the 4th inning https://www.mlb.com/gameday/solar-sox-vs-rafters/2021/10/22/667393#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667393
  13. Rafters Drop 3rd Straight, Fall to Glendale Desert Dogs 10-5 The Salt River Rafters fell behind 4-0 in the first inning (4 hits, 1 walk, 2 wild pitches), clawed back to 4-3 (3rd inning) and 6-5 (6th inning), but a 4-run 7th inning put the game away. Joey Wiemer and J.T. Hintzen were the only Brewers to see action. Joey Wiemer - 1-4 J.T. Hintzen - 1.1 innings, 1 earned run, 0 Ks. He threw 21 pitches (13 strikes) and gave up a home run https://www.mlb.com/gameday/desert-dogs-vs-rafters/2021/10/21/667388#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667388
  14. Rafters Comeback Falls Short, Lose to Surprise Saguaros 4-2 Scoreless through 5 innings, the Saguaros then built leads of 3-0 and 4-2 before the Rafters left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. Joey Wiemer was 0-3 before hitting a key double. He represented the game-tying runner, but Joe Gray Jr.'s (pressed into action due to a baserunning injury to Spencer Torkelson) AFL nightmare continued, as he grounded out to end the game. Taylor Floyd gave up two unearned runs, as a fielding error prolonged his one inning of work. Joey Wiemer - 1-4, 2B, walk Joe Gray Jr. - 0-3 (drops his AFL average to .059) Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 2 unearned runs, 1 K https://www.mlb.com/gameday/saguaros-vs-rafters/2021/10/20/667383#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667383
  15. Lots of permutations: Braves could have walked Cain to set up the force play and try to get Peralta out of the game, Brewers could have pinch hit for Cain (who’d just crashed into the wall) to get a lefty against Anderson (even better, the switch hitting Escobar), Cain could have bunted to maximize chance of getting 1 run (likely giving up chance at big inning), Peralta could have hit or bunted or stood like a statue, we could have used Escobar or Jace as Freddy’s pinch hitter instead of Vogelbach… This is all part of what makes baseball fun. It’s just more fun when you win.
  16. If the Braves had walked Cain (to try to force Freddy Peralta out of the game) and Counsell had had Peralta hit anyway (thinking that maximizing All-Star innings would give us our best chance to win), Freddy would have been up with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 5th inning of that 0-0 Game 3. Would you then have had Freddy: A) Bunt - “safety squeeze”, with Urias running on ground ball contact from 3rd base B) Swing away C) Do nothing and K D) None of the above? Note: Kolten Wong was on deck and Willy Adames was in the hole. We were facing 23-year old RHP Ian Anderson.
  17. Peoria Javelinas Down Salt River Rafters 4-2, Four Brewers See Action Justin Jarvis got the start, while Abner Uribe and J.T. Hintzen also pitched, though thankfully none of our guys took the loss. The Javelinas took a 3-1 lead in the 4th inning and held on for their first win. More errors (3) and than extra base hits (1) definitely hurt the Rafters' cause. - Mario Feliciano - DH - 1-4 - Justin Jarvis - SP - 2.0 innings, 1 unearned run (Jarvis dropped a ball at first base), 2 Ks - Abner Uribe - 1.0 inning, zero runs, 2 Ks - J.T. Hintzen - 1.1 innings, zero runs, 2 Ks https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-javelinas/2021/10/19/667390#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667390
  18. I can’t help but be a cynic on this one, as I assume the clubs are willing to pay for accommodation in exchange for slicing domestic MILB rosters from 180 this year to 150 next year (assumed). But let’s see how it plays out.
  19. Feliciano Knocks in Tying Run, Scores Winning Run in 7-6 Victory Over Scottsdale Scorpions An exciting back-and-forth game saw the Rafters come back from three deficits (1-0, 4-1, 6-5) to pull out the win. Mario Feliciano hit a pinch hit double to tie it up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th inning, then scored on a Wilmer Reyes (23-year old Mets infielder) single. Joey Wiemer - DH - 0-3, HBP, 1 RBI Joe Gray Jr. - CF - 0-5 (dropping his AFL average to .071) Mario Feliciano - PH/C - 1-1, 2B, 1 RBI https://www.mlb.com/gameday/scorpions-vs-rafters/2021/10/18/667331#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667331

  21. Wiemer Power Show Returns, Rafters Defeat Solar Sox 15-7 Joey Wiemer's 2-run homer and Mario Feliciano's double drove in the first 3 runs of the game in the 2nd inning, while an 8-run 4th inning put the Solar Sox away. While Brewer hitters did their part, our pitchers also gave up 6 earned runs. The game featured 17 hits, 22 walks, 5 hit batsmen, 6 wild pitches and 3 balks. Joey Wiemer - RF - 2-3, HR, walk, HBP, 3 RBIs. Wiemer also threw out a runner trying for 3rd base in the 3rd inning Mario Feliciano - C - 1-4, 2B, 1 RBI Joe Gray Jr. - CF - 1-5, HBP, 1 RBI, 1 SB Lun Zhao (first AFL action) - 1.0 inning, 1 ER, 0 Ks Taylor Floyd - 0.2 innings, 1 ER, 2 Ks. Floyd also walked 3 batters, had a balk and a wild pitch J.T. Hintzen (first AFL action) - 0.2 innings, 4 ER, 1 K. Hintzen also walked 3 batters, hit 1 and had a wild pitch https://www.mlb.com/gameday/solar-sox-vs-rafters/2021/10/16/667400#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667400
  22. Game 3: Salt River Rafters 2, Peoria Javelinas 1 Limited action for our guys today: - Abner Uribe - 1.0 inning, zero runs, 1 K. He threw 20 pitches, but only 8 for strikes (2 walks). In the game, the Rafters' Michael Toglia (first baseman, #23 overall pick of 2019 draft by the Rockies) homered in the second inning to take a lead which the team did not relinquish. Hopefully this means we'll have a few players in the lineup tomorrow. https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-javelinas/2021/10/15/667402#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667402
  23. - OF Troy Stokes of AAA Nashville elected free agency - 1B Renato Nunez of AAA Nashville elected free agency The 25-year old Stokes was acquired from the Pirates on June 25th along with Jandel Gustave for Catcher Samuel Escudero, though the "grand return" of this former 4th round draft pick to the Brewer organization didn't exactly go as planned: .606 OPS in 155 PAs. The 27-year Nunez was only with the organization for 5 weeks, signing August 30th after being released by the Detroit Tigers/Toledo Mud Hens. He'd hit well in Toledo (.968 OPS in 311 PAs), but never got going in Nashville (.520 OPS in 75 PAs). Good luck to both gentlemen.
  24. Game 2: Salt River Rafters Fall 1-0 to Surprise Saguaros Brewer contributions: - Joey Wiemer - CF - 0-4 - Mario Feliciano - C - 0-3 - Joe Gray Jr. - PR - Justin Jarvis - 3.0 innings, 0 runs, 0 Ks The Rafters outhit the Saguaros 6-3 and left far more men on base (12-3), going a frustrating 0-11 with men in scoring position, including failing to score with the bases loaded and zero outs in the 8th inning. But the story of the game was really the Saguaros' Owen White, a 2018 second round draft pick of the Rangers who's been injured most of his career, making his professional debut this year. Now 22 years old, he threw 5 scoreless innings to earn the win. https://www.mlb.com/gameday/rafters-vs-saguaros/2021/10/14/667395#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667395
  25. Three Brewer MILB players saw action for the Salt River Rafters in the season opener of the Arizona Fall League. The Rafters defeated the Peoria Javelinas 6-5 via a 4-pitch walk-off walk by none other than ex-Brewer Cooper Hummel: - Joe Gray Jr. - CF - 0-4, walk, RBI - Joey Wiemer - PR - Taylor Floyd - clean 7th inning to keep the Rafters in it: 1.0 inning, no baserunners, 2 Ks I'll also mention that the Rafters' lineup included the 2020 #1 overall draft pick (Spencer Torkelson - Tigers - DH - 1-4, 2B, 2 RBIs) and 2019 #12 overall draft pick (Brett Baty - Mets - third baseman - 3-3, walk, HBP). https://www.mlb.com/gameday/javelinas-vs-rafters/2021/10/13/667382#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=667382
