1. Daniel Vogelbach begins his rehab tonight with AAA Nashville:
2. Joey Wiemer’s hitting streak has reached 14 games, but the Mudcats have dropped 2 in a row. Nick Belzer starts today to turn the tide:
3. We’ve traded AAA OF Cooper Hummel and DSL IF Alberto Ciprian to the Arizona Diamondbacks for IF Eduardo Escobar. Both minor leaguers were hitting well this year (Hummel .942 OPS in 168 PAs; Ciprian .979 OPS in 43 PAs). Hummel was drafted by the Brewers in 2016, while Ciprian was signed in 2019 and saw his first action this year. I find it interesting that we showcased Orlando Arcia at 3B right before his trade and have similarly showcased Cooper Hummel at 1B over the past week just before trading him.
4. Lucas Erceg is coming off his best start of the year (3.1 innings, 1 ER, 4Ks), now starting for the Shuckers against the Montgomery Biscuits: 1 - Longo - LF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Fry - 3B 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Castro - 1B 6 - Spanberger - RF 7 - Diaz - C 8 - Devanney - 2B 9 - Aguilar - CF X - Erceg - P
5. Cooper Hummel (.942 OPS), Weston Wilson (.900 OPS) and Matt Lipka (.864 OPS) lead the Sounds’ offense, which seek a second straight win over the Columbus Clippers. [EDIT]: Hummel traded to Arizona, so Weston Wilson shifts over to 1B and Daniel Robertson slots into the lineup at shortstop.
6. Stolen Base King David Hamilton (40 SBs in 46 attempts in 63 games) leads Wisconsin, which aims to bounce back from yesterday’s loss to Cedar Rapids:
7. Brendan Murphy tries to win his third straight game for the Mudcats, starting this one after two solid relief appearances (11.0 innings, 2 ERs, 12 Ks):
8. It looks like RHP Wade Beasley (2018 24th round pick that signed for $257,500 bonus) didn’t make it through one batter in his first appearance since 2018 (rehab for ACL Blue). Rough. Let’s hope this is a minor set-back.
9. Ashton McGee tries to homer for a 3rd straight game, as the first place Mudcats travel to face the Lynchburg Hillcats:
10. Travis Shaw and Dylan File commence rehab assignments at AAA Nashville tonight, which needs to snap a 4-game skid:
11. After a horror-filled final half-inning coughed up a 5-2 lead to lose Game One earlier today, Carlos Luna makes his AA debut for Biloxi in Game Two tonight: 1 - Longo - LF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Fry - 3B 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Castro - 1B 6 - Spanberger - RF 7 - Diaz - C 8 - Devanney - 2B 9 - Aguilar - CF X - Luna - P
12. Leo Crawford picks up where the since-promoted Andy Otero left off in the bottom of the 2nd inning in a previously-suspended game with a 3-0 Shuckers’ lead. No other lineup changes were required. https://www.milb.com/gameday/shuckers-vs-biscuits/2021/07/27/644691#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=play-by-play,game=644691 A second game (7 innings, I believe) will follow subsequently tonight.
13. Antonio Pinero returns from injury to start at 3B for the Timber Rattlers, which seeks a 4th straight win: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Cantrelle - 2B 3 - Howell - CF 4 - Dillard - 1B 5 - Ward - DH 6 - Gray - RF 7 - Rodriguez - LF 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Pinero - 3B X - F. Adames - P https://img.mlbstatic.com/milb-images/image/upload/fl_attachment/milb/xnswqi78o7z7ntnrmlnp.pdf
14. Per MILB roster pages, IF Tyler Friis has been released from AA Biloxi. The Indians had released him just before MILB games started this year and the Brewers signed him to Biloxi on April 30. He was a regular (29 starts at 2B, 1 at SS) with 119 PAs before an injury sidelined him on June 26th. Good luck to Tyler.
15. RHP Abner Uribe placed on 7-day injured list at Low-A Carolina. And RHP Peyton Long also placed on Carolina’s 7-day injured list. Also, AAA Sounds placed OF Derek Fisher on the 7-day injured list.
16. We’ve released 20-year old OF/1B Juan Frias, who had 7 plate appearances with the ACL Gold squad this year after playing 2018 and 2019 in the DSL. He’d actually hit well in 2019 with an excellent BB/K ratio, but perhaps the power and speed are lacking or he’s ready to pursue something else. Best of luck to Juan. https://www.milb.com/player/juan-frias-678885
17. I guess I'll throw some darts, though I can't help but lean toward the more experienced players since the outcomes for young players tend to vary so widely: 1. Garrett Mitchell 2. Mario Feliciano 3. Ethan Small 4. Aaron Ashby 5. Brice Turang 6. Sal Frelick 7. Jeferson Quero 8. Hedbert Perez 9. Justin Topa 10. Jake Cousins 11. Eduardo Garcia 12. Alec Bettinger 13. Miguel Sanchez 14. Tyler Black 15. Angel Perdomo 16. Dylan File 17. Justin Bullock 18. Joe Gray 19. Zavier Warren 20. Corey Ray 21. Felix Valerio 22. Korry Howell 23. Weston Wilson 24. Ernesto Martinez 25. Jackson Chourio 26. Antoine Kelly 27. Eduarqui Fernandez 28. Jesus Chirinos 29. Joey Wiemer 30. Luis Medina 31. Jesus Parra 32. Carlos Rodriguez (OF) 33. Luke Barker 34. Andy Otero 35. Abner Uribe 36. Tristen Lutz 37. Jamie Westbrook 38. Carlos Luna 39. Max Lazar 40. Taylor Floyd 41. Nick Bennett 42. Zack Brown 43. Justin Jarvis 44. David Hamilton 45. Darrien Miller 46. Ashton McGee 47. David Fry 48. Freddy Zamora 49. Clayton Andrews 50. Thomas Dillard 51. Victor Castaneda 52. Jheremy Vargas 53. Miguel Segura 54. Patricio Aquino 55. Hendry Mendez
18. Per MILB roster pages, IF Antonio Pinero assigned to High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers after completing his rehab with the ACL Blue squad.
19. Lo Cain starts for the Sounds, in what’s expected to be his last rehab game before he returns to the MLB club. The Sounds are trying to snap a 3-game skid, with Aaron Ashby getting the start:
20. Kudos to Mike Guerrero and the Shuckers. They fought and clawed and lost and lost for 2.5 months. Then their top pitcher was promoted after a game they were leading 3-0 was halted by rain. And now, with no new talent injections (unless you count Garrett Mitchell starting to figure out AA pitching after initial struggles) or even additional bodies (they’ve 11 position players, since Lucas Erceg hasn’t batted for 3 weeks), they’ve run off 6 straight wins anyway. Well done gentlemen!
21. The Biloxi Shuckers go for their 6th(!) consecutive victory, while Noah Zavolas aims for a repeat performance against Mississippi (7 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits on July 20th): 1 - Mitchell - CF 2 - Fry - 2B 3 - Longo - LF 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Castro - RF 6 - G. Garcia - 3B 7 - Diaz - C 8 - Aguilar - 1B 9 - Devanney - SS X - Zavolas - P
22. 4th round RHP Logan Henderson has also signed. I believe that gives of 11 signings from the 21-man draft class thus far. [EDIT] - For slot value of $497,500 per Jim Callis.
23. Joe Gray Jr. is heating up (1.277 OPS over last 6 games) for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, who seek a third straight win over the woeful Cubs:
24. Micah Bello returns to Carolina from a mid-May injury and Zavier Warren also returns from an apparently minor knock/strain, as the Mudcats try to bounce back from yesterday’s close defeat:
25. Hopefully this rain delay doesn’t stop the Shuckers from extending their winning streak to 5 games tonight: 1 - Mitchell - CF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Fry - 3B 4 - Longo - LF 5 - Castro - RF 6 - Spanberger - DH 7 - Diaz - C 8 - Aguilar - 1B 9 - Devanney - 2B X - J. Castillo - P
