1. - Promoted 2B Tyler Black from ACL Blue to Low-A Carolina - Promoted 2B Zach Raabe from ACL Gold to Low-A Carolina - Sent SS Branlyn Jaraba on rehab assignment to ACL Blue
2. Hopefully this tweet from Darren McGee means that utility man (well, corner infielder this year) Ashton McGee is getting the deserved promotion to High-A Wisconsin. He hit his 10th homer including his 2nd grand slam today, whilst raising his OPS to .953. I guess we’ll know more by Tuesday. Of course, SS Freddy Zamora and 1B/OF Ernesto Martinez also have terrific cases for promotion.
3. 22-year old Justin Bullock makes his 5th AA start and Thomas Dillard makes his 2nd AA start at catcher, as Biloxi tries to even this week's series with Pensacola 3-3: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Longo - LF 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Fry - 1B 6 - Lutz - RF 7 - Dillard - C 8 - Devanney - 3B 9 - Cantrelle - 2B X - Bullock - P
4. Nashville seeks to bounce back from yesterday’s tough loss, as Jamie Westbrook battles for the AAA East batting title (tied for second with .340 AVG):
5. TJ Shook makes his High-A debut, as the Timber Rattlers aim to get a second straight victory: 1 - Rodriguez - LF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Wiemer - CF 4 - Ward - DH 5 - Gray - RF 6 - Warren - C 7 - McClanahan - 1B 8 - Pinero - SS 9 - Coca - 3B X - Shook - P
6. Carolina tries to win its 6th in a row, to sweep the weeklong series from Augusta. Freddy Zamora gets better every month (.569 May OPS, .666 June, .758 July, 1.080 August thus far):
7. 2B Tyler Black (33rd overall pick) has probably seen enough of ACL ball, so I’d expect he’ll be in Carolina by Tuesday. This may bump one Mudcat to Wisconsin; my money’s on utility man Ashton McGee. Of course, 1B/OF Ernesto Martinez should also make the move from Carolina to Wisconsin. To me, the three Arizona guys who could come to Carolina to bump up Ernesto are OF Hedbert Perez, C Jeferson Quero and 1B Jesus Chirinos. And though Perez and Quero are super-prospects, I think the promotion (if any) will go to Chirinos, who’s two years older and already played in Arizona in 2019. Quero may also be blocked this year by the sheer number of decent catchers above him in the system.
8. Nashville aims for a 2nd straight win, with Dustin Peterson continuing his solid campaign (.776 OPS in 225 PAs with only 24 Ks):
9. The Shuckers strive for a third consecutive victory, with Mitch Longo continuing his fine form (.299/.373/.468 in 229 PAs): 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Mitchell - CF 3 - Longo - LF 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Spanberger - 1B 6 - Lutz - RF 7 - Howell - 2B 8 - Diaz - C 9 - Holt - 3B X - J. Castillo - P
10. The battery of Justin Jarvis and Kekai Rios step up to try to end Wisconsin’s 4-game skid. Rios has had a nice little run (.954 OPS over last 41 PAs): 1 - Rodriguez - CF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Wiemer - RF 4 - Ward - DH 5 - Warren - 1B 6 - McClanahan - 3B 7 - L. Castillo - LF 8 - Rios - C 9 - Pinero - SS X - Jarvis - P
11. Christian Tripp makes his 2nd start, as the Mudcats try to win their 5th in a row:
12. Lucas Erceg makes his 20th pitching appearance of the season, after coming off two decent outings (2.57 ERA in 7.0 innings with 8 Ks): 1 - Howell - 3B 2 - Mitchell - CF 3 - Fry - C 4 - Palma - LF 5 - Spanberger - 1B 6 - Lutz - RF 7 - Dillard - DH 8 - Devanney - SS 9 - Cantrelle - 2B X - Erceg - P
13. Josh Lindblom takes a crack at snapping Nashville’s 7-game skid:
14. Jeferson Figueroa (2019 32nd rounder) gets his first action in Low-A and Ernesto Martinez returns from a recent injury, as the Mudcats strive to make it 4 wins in a row: 1 - Frelick - CF 2 - Murray - 2B 3 - Zamora - SS 4 - Binelas - 3B 5 - Clarke - C 6 - McGee - DH 7 - Martinez - 1B 8 - Nnebe - LF 9 - M. Wilson - RF X - Figueroa - P
15. Interesting decisions. With the likelihood of 26-man rosters, universal DH and less concern over pitchers' fatigue (not ramping up from 60 games to 162 games again), it may be more attractive than ever for teams to select and keep Rule 5 picks. With that in mind, we may want to protect more than usual, e.g. Bullock, Howell, Lutz, Lazar, Barker, Wilson, Andrews.
16. The Timber Rattlers look to break their 3-game losing streak, as recently-turned 22-year old LG Castillo is quietly having a solid year (.293/.332/.450): 1 - Valerio - 2B 2 - Wiemer - RF 3 - Ward - DH 4 - Gray - CF 5 - Warren - 1B 6 - McClanahan - 3B 7 - Rodriguez - LF 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Pinero - SS X - Bennett - P
17. Tristen Lutz(!) is back from injury, seeing action for the first time in over 7 weeks. Biloxi looks to bounce back from an extra-inning heartbreaker yesterday and has the right man (Carlos Luna) on the mound to do it: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Mitchell - LF 3 - Fry - 3B 4 - Spanberger - 1B 5 - Lutz - RF 6 - Dillard - DH 7 - Diaz - C 8 - Howell - CF 9 - Holt - 2B X - Luna - P
18. Matt Lipka starts in CF after Corey Ray departed early yesterday, and Daniel Vogelbach commences a new rehab assignment, as free-falling Nashville aims to scratch out a needed win:
19. Brandon Knarr brings his flamethrower up to Wisconsin for his High-A debut, after striking out 103 batters in 75.0 innings at Carolina: 1 - Valerio - 2B 2 - Wiemer - RF 3 - Warren - 1B 4 - Gray - CF 5 - Ward - LF 6 - L. Castillo - DH 7 - Pinero - SS 8 - Rios - C 9 - Coca - 3B X - Knarr - P
20. Steady Ashton McGee (.300/.432/.498) tries to lead the Mudcats to a 3rd straight win, while Nick Belzer gets back on the mound for his first action since July 29th:
21. - 1B/OF Ernesto Martinez activated from Carolina injured list - OF Tristen Lutz activated from Biloxi injured list - IF Gabriel Garcia placed on Biloxi’s Development List
22. Two placements, two promotions: - 2B Tyler Black (Comp A pick, 33rd overall) assigned to ACL Blue - SS Kay-Lan Nicasia (16th round) assigned to ACL Gold - RHP Miguel Segura promoted from DSL-1 to ACL Gold - RHP Fray Morelo promoted from DSL-1 to ACL Gold
23. After the fireman experiment didn’t go well for Ashby earlier in the year, this seems to be a natural compromise: start and pitch 1-3 innings. I won’t be surprised if we use Ashby to open a game or two for our righties if we make the postseason.
24. Gabe Holt and Hayden Cantrelle make their first starts at AA, as Biloxi’s infield overhaul is complete (1B Dillard, 2B Cantrelle, 3B Holt, SS Hamilton): 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Longo - LF 3 - Mitchell - CF 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Fry - C 6 - Spanberger - RF 7 - Dillard - 1B 8 - Cantrelle - 2B 9 - Holt - 3B X - Zavolas - P
25. Victor Castaneda’s on the mound to break his personal 2-game skid and help Wisconsin bounce back from yesterday’s tough loss: 1 - Wiemer - DH 2 - Warren - 3B 3 - Valerio - 2B 4 - Gray - CF 5 - McClanahan - 1B 6 - L. Castillo - LF 7 - Rodriguez - RF 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Coca - SS X - Castaneda - P
