The Mudcats can capture this week’s home series over Columbia with a Sunday win behind 18-year RHP Ethan Dorchies, who’s making his first Low-A start (2.2 IP, 2 R, 3 Ks in relief last week). OF Braylon Payne is missing a 5th straight game. SS Jesus Made ranks high in the Carolina League (R - 5th, H - 7th, 2B - 3rd, RBI - 5th, SB - 6th, AVG - 7th, OBP - 10th).

Jeez - it looks like Elvin and Jorge challenged the wrong pitch (2-2 pitch was a strike called a ball; then challenged full count correctly-called ball). That loaded the bases with 2 outs and the Sounds still leading 4-0. Sweet called for Elvis, who promptly got those bases cleared with a grand slam before then walking the next 3 batters. Then Hudson had to bail him out. The Sounds then loaded the bases via an error and 2 walks with 1 out in the bottom of the 6th, but failed to score (Dalbec force out, Black K). So now they’re on to the 7th inning, tied 4-4 despite outhitting Iowa 7-2 and stranding 10 LOB vs. Iowa’s 4.

The High-A Timber Rattlers need a win behind RHP Ryan Birchard (4.01 ERP, 1..50 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 49.1 IP) tonight to even their series at West Michigan at 2 games apiece. No Blake Burke in the lineup? DH Marco Dinges has homered in 3 consecutive games.

AA Biloxi gets a 2nd chance to clinch this week’s home series over Knoxville, this time behind RHP Brett Wichrowski, who’s coming off 2 rough starts (combined 5.2 IP, 10 R (1 ER), 9 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks). SS Cooper Pratt has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games.

The Low-A Mudcats are knotted 2-2 in this week’s home series against Columbia and RHP Travis Smith (3.07 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 6.6 K/9 in 41 IP) gets the start this afternoon. DH Eric Bitonti is now tied atop the 12-team Carolina League with 10 homers.

Adams has a shoulder contusion from a home plate collision. Not sure how long he's out. A promotion of Burke may depend on whether Boeve is ready to play 2B or 3B. Otherwise, Areinamo or Eduardo might make sense.

No formal injury placement for 3B Brock Wilken, but if he’s heading to Milwaukee I think it’s safe to assume he’s out for a bit:

They don't like throwing pitchers 2 times in 3 days, so hoped Yeager could pitch 2 innings. Didn't work, thus forcing Childers and Bryant to throw. I still think Middendorf's 18 pitches were too few. The team needed more. Too bad Bryant had to walk the world and give up a grand slam over 34 pitches (14 strikes).

Doesn't feel fair to Tyler Bryant. He pitched on Wednesday and shouldn't have to wear this, in my humble opinion.

Aw man. 4 walks in the bottom of the 9th for Biloxi, but we don’t score. Argh! I’m not sure who’s left to pitch extra innings. In retrospect, we probably needed more out of Middendorf.

Biloxi’s hitters are playing with the sort of confidence we saw at Carolina early in the year. Ethan Murray doubled and scored in the 5th inning to cut the deficit to 4-3, then Bladimir Restituyo and Murray hit back-to-back doubles in the 7th to tie it.

RHPs Melvin Hernandez (6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 8 Ks) and Jesus Flores (3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks did not have trouble silencing the Columbia bats. This is a reminder that Hernandez is one of the four youngest pitchers in the 12-team Carolina League (so is Dorchies). A fortunate double play helped Hernandez escape the 3rd inning. Jose Anderson doubled and scored in the 4th inning and Eric Bitonti smacked a 9th inning 2-run homer.

AAA Nashville have dropped 2 of 3 at home to Iowa and turn to LHP Bruce Zimmermann for a repeat of his last outing (4.2 IP, 0 R, 2 Ks). After a miserable 2 months (.550 OPS in 236 MLB/AAA PAs), 3B Oliver Dunn has a 5-game hitting streak.

The AA Shuckers can clinch this week’s home series with a 4th straight win over Knoxville. 23-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (2.51 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 57.1 IP) makes his 13th start and Ethan Murray (.843 OPS in 113 PAs) gets a start at third base with Wilken (resting?) and Adams (7-day IL) out of the lineup.

High-A Wisconsin has also commenced its game at West Michigan, with the series tied at 1 game apiece. LHP Sam Garcia aims to bounce back from a tough last start (4 IP, 7 R (6 ER), 6 Ks). Despite his on-base streak being snapped yesterday, CF Eduardo Garcia still has a .953 OPS over his last 43 games (185 PAs).
