They need a win to even their home series against Memphis 1-1. 2B Ray Delgado needs to shake his slump (4-for-last-39 with 0 XBHs).

After a sloppy loss yesterday, Low-A Carolina needs a bounceback win behind 18-year, 364-day old RHP Melvin Hernandez (2.17 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 70.2 IP) to even their home series against Fayetteville. 1B Eric Bitonti leads the Carolina League in homers (12) and is 2nd in RBIs (48).

The High-A Timber Rattlers battle Marlin’s affiliate Beloit for 3 games on the road, with intriguing 19-year old RHP Manuel Rodriguez (1.67 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 8.7 K/9 in 27 IP) starting tonight. 1B Blake Burke is 5th in the Midwest League with a .310 AVG.

The AAA Sounds host Cardinals’ affiliate Memphis for 3 games, with RHP Logan Henderson (2.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 74 2/3 AAA/MLB IP) on the bump tonight. Versatile Bobby Dalbec had a 1.054 OPS in June (96 PAs).

AA Biloxi is visiting Marlins’ affiliate Pensacola for 3 games, with RHP KC Hunt (4.68 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 59 2/3 IP) getting the start tonight. 1B Zavier Warren comes in witb an 8-game hitting streak.

CF Braylon Payne (.701 OPS in 202 PAs) is back in the Low-A Carolina lineup for his first game in 2 weeks, They welcome Astros’ affiliate Fayetteville to town for 3 games, with LHP Wande Torres (6.07 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 9.0 K/9 in 43 IP) getting the start.

Crow is probably a shoe-in after last year’s Rule 5 oopsie, though he’s also a potentially valuable trade chip. EMJ and Dalbec are both fringe guys who could add value at the MLB level. DSL Brewers Gold played a 7-inning contest at DSL Rojos, coming back from a 4-0 deficit thru 3 innings, scoring 6 unanswered to lead 6-4 after 5.5 innings, conceding a 2-run homer for a 6-6 contest, then pulling it out with 2 runs in the 7th to win 8-6. C Isais Chavez delivered the big 2-out, 7th inning 2-run double to re-take the lead, after an untimely caught stealing (3rd base) and strikeout had them in jeopardy of coming up empty. Earlier, 1B Matthew Moses and 3B Juan Martinez connected on their first career homers as part of the 6-run rally. CF Kenny Fenelon reached base 3 times (double, single, walk), while leadoff DH Alexander Frias (single, walk, 2 SBs) and RHP Derlin Garcia (3-up, 3-down - 2 Ks) made their professional debuts. RHP Gabriel Colmenarez had gotten the start (4 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 6 Ks), while RHP Fabian Reyes retired the final 6 batters (after starting with a walk and game-tying 2-run homer) to earn the Win (2 Ks).

DSL Brewers Blue hosted a 7-inning game against Red Sox Red. The Blue Crew were out-hit 8-1 thru 6.5 innings, but remained tied 1-1 (SS Leonard Rijo reached on an error, stole 2 bases, scored on a grounder), even with 3 doubles for their opponent against starting RHP Lonell Downs (3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) DH Angel Gonzalez tripled to opposite field to open the final half-frame and scored the game-winning run on Rijo’s opposite field single. 2-1 victory! RHPs Johan Zapata and Jhosep Ospino combined on 4 scoreless innings of relief (4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks).

Sounds’ Extras: Nashville outhit its opponent 11-to-9 and out-stole them 4-to-2, but a 2-for-14 evening with runners in scoring position stifled their comeback attempt. To his immense credit, Fitzpatrick dug in to strike out Workinger and his teammate swinging on 7 pitches total. Shuckers’ Extras: Every Shucker position player reached base via hit or walk in a solid team effort, with Warren delivering 2 RBIs and each of OF Luis Lara, DH Cooper Pratt and 1B Mike Boeve reaching base twice. After 2 runs from 3 singles off RHP Miles Langhorne (2 1/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K) in the top of the 5th inning, the teams combined to send only 19 hitters to the plate over the next 6 half-innings, setting the stage for what appeared to be Wisconsin’s last best comeback chance in the bottom of the 8th inning, down 5-2 with SS Jadher Areinamo, C Marco Dinges, Burke and OF Eduardo Garcia due up. As you’ve seen and heard, that formidable quartet did their part to nearly tie the game via a catcher’s interference, walk and 2 doubles, only to be undone in unfair fashion by Dinges’ injury (and out) rounding 3rd base. 2B Juan Baez then struck out on 3 pitches and OF Kay-Lan Nicasia lined out to center field to strand potential game-tying runner Garcia at 2nd base. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Big credit to RHPs Jack Seppings (0 BB, 2 Ks) and Bayden Root (0 BB, 1 K) on 2 scoreless innings each to give the Wisconsin offense a chance to pull out the win. Burke’s 3-for-3 day with a walk and 3 RBIs lifted his season average to .310 and OPS to .849, as he sets his sights firmly on a potential promotion to AA Biloxi. Unless David Garcia (injured since April 23) or Yannic Walther (exited Carolina’s game early in Thursday) is available, don’t be surprised if Victor Torres is re-assigned from AA Biloxi to fill in while Dinges makes a full recovery. After the team failed to cash in with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 1st inning, 1B Eric Bitonti (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs, SB) ensured no room for doubt on his 0-1, 2-out, 3-run blast in the top of the 2nd inning: After stranding SS Luis Pena and Bitonti in the top of the 7th inning despite their inning-opening walk and infield single, Delmarva cut the deficit to 3-2 with a 2-out double and RBI single in the bottom of the 7th inning off of RHP Bryan Rivera (3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks), who induced a fly out to keep the lead. RHP Garrett Hodges had completed a 2-inning save earlier in the week and was called upon to do so again here, retiring 6 straight batters (4 Ks) without difficulty to clinch the series. Mudcats’ Extras: Every Carolina position player reached base via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch, including 2 HBPs for OF Tyler Rodriguez (.196 season AVG, .385 season OBP with 13 HBPs in 208 PAs). The team was undoubtedly happy to have C Eric Martinez available (assigned from High-A Wisconsin) after Walther’s Thursday exit forced Edgardo Ordonez to catch 4 consecutive games. Martinez went 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch (stop injuring our catchers!) and threw out 1-of-4 basestealers. In his full season affiliate debut, 23-year old RHP Nick DeCarlo allowed a single and walk in the 4th inning, before getting Ks swinging and looking to deliver a scoreless frame. While Jesus Made had a rest day, he got to watch Pena tie him for the team’s stolen base lead (33) and Bitonti become the first Mudcats’ player this year to join the 10-10 club (12 homers, 10 stolen bases). Yoho gave up 2 hard hit balls (fly out, double), then baffled the next 2 hitters (K, weak grounder). And DH Andrew Vaughn walked to lead off the 9th inning. Despite 3 speedsters on the bench (Black, Oliva, Delgado), we didn’t pinch run for Vaughn (zero career MILB stolen bases) and Dalbec hit into a GIDP. Seigler then drew a walk and Alfaro K’d to end the game. Sounds lose 6-5 and drop the series 4 games to 2.

An inning later, the Sounds strand baserunners at 2nd (Dunn - infield hit) and 3rd (Perkins - walk, SB) when Avans goes down swinging. I’m kind of surprised we’re pulling Stallings after 34 pitches for Yoho, but I guess Yoho could use the work here in the bottom of the 8th. Sounds still trail 6-5.

Kind of nice of the Marlins to have Adam Mazur throw 166 pitches over 6 days. Andrew Vaughn just took his 91st pitch today (and 9th pitch of this at-bat) deep for a 3-run homer to make it a 6-5 game in the top of the 7th inning. Bobby Dalbec then hit his third double of the game, but a lineout double play ended the chance.

The Dinges injury basically cost Wisconsin a tie game and potentially the series. Baez K'd and Nicasia lined out to strand Eduardo at 2nd base, down 5-4 in that 8th inning. A Guilarte single was all they got in the 9th. They lose the home series 4 games to 2. And with Walther exiting a Low-A game early a few days ago (no news or injury placement yet), this may force Victor Torres over to High-A Wisconsin for actual playing time.
