His four-seam fastball peaked at 99.1mph with a strikeout to end the 2nd frame. The Redbirds out-walked the Sounds 8-to-2, taking advantage of 2 free passes in each of the 3rd, 6th and 7th innings to grab a 5-2 advantage, with Nashville failing to cash in on a 5th inning walk and single, 6th inning double or 7th inning triple and walk. As you’ve read, Nashville outhit Memphis 13 to 7, with 2B Anthony Seigler (2-for-4, triple, double) one of five Sounds to deliver a multi-hit game. Unfortunately, Seigler’s strikeout with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th inning also ended their last key threat, trailing 5-3 with a runner on second at the time. Yes, INF Caleb Durbin can capably handle third base: Sounds’ Extras: Committing two errors and having two baserunners thrown out by Redbirds’ outfielders contributed to the defeat, although all 8 Memphis runs were earned – 2 off RHP Blake Holub, 2 from RHP Easton McGee and 3 off RHP Vinny Nittoli. RHP Craig Yoho (0.00 season ERA, including 2 Ks and a groundout in a perfect 8th inning here) continues to show Brewers’ brass that he’s ready to contribute if given the chance. C Jorge Alfaro’s 3-hit game lifted his season average to .297, while he also threw out Memphis’ only attempted basestealer. He’s bearing a disproportionate share of the catching load early in the season, with Seigler the only other healthy backstop on the roster. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old RHP Carlos Rodriguez (9 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 9 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) is scheduled to make his third start of the 2025 campaign, with the Sounds aiming for a 3-1 home series lead. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Columbus 5, Biloxi 2 Box Score and Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Fall to Columbus, 5-2, in First Thursday Game of the Season This second contest also saw a Brewers’ affiliate outhit the opposition, but fall due to other factors, in this case an untimely long ball. LHP Tate Kuehner’s season record fell to 0-2, but he ended with a respectable line despite the lack of strikeouts (5 1/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 4 BB, 0 Ks). He faced the minimum number of batters through 3 innings, aided by two ground ball double plays. While Kuehner kept them in the game, the Shuckers’ offense didn’t collect a hit until two 5th inning singles, which were unfortunately not cashed in. Columbus was glad to see Kuehner exit at 81 pitches after a one-out single and walk in the top of the 6th inning, benefitting from a 5-pitch walk and first-pitch grand slam off RHP Tyler Woessner to break open the scoring in style. It was Columbus’ only hit with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-8 in the contest. The Shuckers had the potential game-winning or game-tying run at the plate in each of the 7th, 8th and 9th innings, but went 0-for-5 in those chances, including SS Cooper Pratt’s game-ending double play. Kudos to OFs Luis Lara and Bladimir Restituyo for reaching base five times (combined) and 1B Luke Adams for collecting a hit, walk, RBI and stolen base. Unfortunately, a scan of the box score season batting averages helps explain why the Shuckers now own a 1-and-5 record (still early in 2025). Of course, Lara first made his name with his range and glove: Shuckers’ Extras: RHP Stiven Cruz delivered his second solid relief appearance of 2025, working around 2 singles while striking out 2 hitters over scoreless 7th and 8th frames. The two teams combined for just 7 total strikeouts, but went 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position and hit into 4 double plays. 20-year old Pratt will have many highs in his career, but the ball just didn’t want to find the grass on this night (0-for-5 with a line out, fly out and three ground outs). Friday’s outlook: 25-year old LHP Nate Peterson will make his second start of 2025. We’ll see if the capable swingman goes deeper than the 43-pitch, 3 innings he provided last week. Was this resident bullpen elder (26) RHP Bayden Root’s finest outing in his third season of Minor League work?: 4 batters faced, 4 strikeouts, including stranding an inherited runner from Rodriguez. We were told that 21-year old Areinamo remained in Wisconsin in order to work on “pitch zone recognition”. I’m not sure that 2 walks (and just 6 Ks) in 27 plate appearances is exactly what the organization is looking for, but the man continues to be a leader and performer, as evidenced by his leadoff triple in the 8th inning and literal game-saving catch to send the contest to extra innings. The extra frame allowed 3B Juan Baez (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) and Nicasia (2-for-5, 2 HRs, 5 RBIs) to join 1B Tayden Hall (2-for-4, walk) in the multi-hit club, with Baez giving Wisconsin its first lead since the 4th inning and Nicasia delivering the first-pitch grand salami to blow the game open with 2 outs in the top of the 10th inning. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: 23-year old RHPs Yerlin Rodriguez’s second multi-inning relief appearance likely raised more eyebrows (small sample alert), pushing his season line to 7 Ks, 0 walks and 0 HBP in 4 IP. OF Luis Castillo (0-for-2) smacked 18 homers in Low-A ball last season, but is patiently awaiting his first hit as a Timber Rattler, walking 3 times in this game. Friday’s outlook: 20-year old RHP Bishop Letson is set to make his second start of the 2025 campaign, after a strong 3.1 IP, 4 K performance last week. Final: Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina 2 Box Score and Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Drop Contest to Myrtle Beach Proving once again that you can’t win them all, the Mudcats suffered their first loss of the year while conceding 5 early runs and collecting only 4 hits in the contest. However, the good news vastly outweighs the bad here as 17-year old DH/OF Jesus Made and 21-year old C Marco Dinges both returned to action for the first time since Opening Day (April 4th). Starting 21-year old RHP Jack Hostetler found the terrain much more difficult in his second outing, starting the game with a hit-by-pitch, then conceding 5 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in the first 2 innings. He did bounce back to retire the last 5 batters he faced, including registering 2 of his 4 strikeouts. The Mudcats then nearly got back into it in the top of the 4th inning, loading the bases down 5-1 with 2 outs before grounding out. At least 2B Demetrio Nadal (2-for-3, HBP, RBI) collected his first multi-hit game and RBI in Low-A ball. 19-year old SS Filippo Di Turi entered the 2025 season with 2 career homers in 613 plate appearances, but notched his 2nd blast of the 2025 season (30 PAs). He also drew a walk to lift his early season OPS to .991. Mudcats’ Extras: 19-year old INF/OF Tyler Rodriguez’s first appearance in full season minor league ball saw him man the left field grass while going 0-for-3 at the plate. He and super-prospect Made will both look to collect their first hits at this level in their next starts. 20-year old RHP Jesus Flores didn’t look like he’d be long for the contest after conceding 3 singles to the first 3 batters he faced after entering in the 4th inning, but he promptly retired the next 6 hitters (stranding the bases loaded in that 4th inning) to give the squad some solid relief (3 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks). 20-year old LHP Bjorn Johnson conceded a double and a walk over 2 innings of relief work, but kept his ERA at 0.00 and added 3 strikeouts. The 2023 twelfth round draft pick will look to continue stacking positive outings after being limited to 8 games in the 2024 season. Friday’s outlook: 19-year old RHP Bryce Meccage (3.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks last week) gets to make his second career Minor League start, with Carolina looking to get back into the win column for a 3-1 series lead.
