  1. Seth Stohs sits down with outfield prospect Joey Wiemer in part one of a three-part interview. Wiemer talks about high school sports, his decision to play college ball at Cincinnati, and the weirdness of being drafted in the COVID class of 2020. He also mentions some odd clothing choices in a photo Seth dug up somewhere...
  2. We have been covering four full-season Brewers affiliates for the past two months now. From this point until September, we will be covering eight Brewers affiliates across six leagues. On Monday, the short-season affiliates in Arizona and the Dominican Republic started their seasons. So be sure to continue checking back often for minor league reports. We’re essentially doubling the coverage! In the past, the beginning of the short-season, rookie league season was right near the time of the MLB Draft. However, now that the draft has been pushed back to July, Opening Day of the short-season leagues came up in a hurry. On Monday, the Arizona Complex League and the Dominican Summer League seasons began. At Brewer Fanatic, we will be providing reports on those teams in our daily Minor League Reports. Below you can see how the four rookie-level Brewers affiliates played on Monday. It was a big week, so let’s get to the recaps and more. As always, feel free to discuss this report, the teams and players or more in the Comments. The 18-year-old from Venezuela had a great week. He had 11 hits in 25 at-bats. He hit .440/.462/.920 (1.382) with a double, a triple, and three home runs. In 28 games with the Mudcats since his promotion from the Complex, he has hit .371/.417/.595 (1.012) with 12 doubles, a triple, four homers and 25 RBI. Have I mentioned yet that he is 18-years-old? Chourio was signed as a shortstop in January 2021 from Venezuela for $1.9 million. He played in the Dominican Summer League last summer and hit .296/.386/.447 (.883) with seven doubles, a triple and five home runs. He is a tremendous athlete who has been playing mostly center field for the Mudcats. He’s got really good speed. He also has good bat-to-ball skills, and finds a way to find barrels and hit the ball really hard. He is incredibly young for the level. Pitcher of the Week: RHP Cam Robinson, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Well, the streak of Timber Rattlers starting pitchers winning this award every week is over. However, the award stays in Appleton and goes to reliever Cam Robinson. Robinson pitched just three innings on the week, but he recorded saves in both of his outings. He struck out four batters without allowing a run. The Brewers used their 23rd round pick in 2017 to select the right-hander from University High School near Orlando. He spent most of 2017-2019 in the Arizona League. After the Covid-lost 2020 season, he split 2021 between Carolina and Wisconsin. In total, he pitched in 39 games out of the bullpen and went 3-2 with 13 saves. In 49 2/3 innings, he walked 30 and struck out 62 batters. He had a 3.08 ERA, but the walks pushed his WHIP to 1.59. He has now pitched in 17 games for the Timber Rattles this season and finished 16 games. He is 2-0 with 11 saves. In 25 innings, he has given up just 11 hits, walked 14 and struck out 33 batters. The walks are still plenty high, but his stuff has greatly improved and he’s become less hittable. Feel free to discuss the Brewers' prospects and their affiliates in the COMMENTS below. With Wisconsin, he went 3-for-7 (.429) with a homer and four RBI over just two games before the call-up. Ashton McGee played in all six games. He went 8-for-20 and hit ..400/.455/.650 (1.105) with two doubles and a homer. Tristen Peters went 7-for-22 over his six games. He hit .318/.375/.409 (.784) with two doubles. What’s Next?

Aaron Ashby struck out 12 batters in six innings in Game 2. Nashville played a rare Monday game in Durham. They wanted a Memorial Day game, so Dylan File took on Shane Baz, and the Sounds won again. They will have Tuesday off before continuing their series. It was a big week, so let’s get to the recaps and more. As always, feel free to discuss this report, the teams, and players or more in the Comments. TRANSACTIONS Monday was filled with transactions throughout the Brewers organization>Normally we would post them here, but since there was a Nashville game on Monday, there was a minor league report and transactions were covered nicely in there. They beat Durham 7-5 in North Carolina. Ethan Small returned to the mound after a bout of illness and made the start on Tuesday. The lefty gave up one run on five hits over six innings. He struck out three batters. Of course, he got bumped from his Sunday start because he was promoted to the Brewers and made his MLB debut on Monday afternoon. Caleb Boushley tossed seven shutout innings in his start. He gave up just three hits, walked one and struck out four batters. Nashville is getting some length from their starters, at least some of the elder statesmen. Jason Alexander gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings. He had five strikeouts. They are also one game ahead of South Bend. The Timber Rattlers were able to go on the road and split their six-game series against the division-leading Kernels, staying just one game behind. That is especially noteworthy when they were outscored 23-38 in the series. The Tuesday and Thursday losses were both blowouts (2-13 and 0-9) which accounted for that differential. So well thought of, the Brewers added him to their 60-player pool and alternate site in 2020 as a 17-year-old. He played in 32 games for the Brewers Gold Arizona Complex team where he hit .333/.394/.575 (.969) with 11 and six doubles. He moved up to Low-A Carolina for the final 16 games. That is where the 19-year-old started the 2022 season. Last week, he went 9-for-19 (.474). He hit four doubles, one triple, and one home run. Overall, he is hitting .215/.271/.375 (.646) in 36 games. He is the son of former big-league outfielder Robert Perez. Also an outfielder, Perez stands just shy of 6’0” and 190 pounds. He is strong and has an advanced knowledge of the game. He’s got the tools. He’s got a nice, left-handed swing and continues to gain strength. He could develop plus-power. He’s got good speed and could probably play center field now, but his future is in the corner outfield. He can be good defensively, and he’s got an average arm. He’s a long way from the big leagues, but a 19-year-old having a big week in Low-A is very encouraging. Pitcher of the Week: RHP Justin Jarvis, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Another week, another Timber Rattler starter wins the pitcher of the week honor. For the second straight week, the winner is Wisconsin right-hander Justin Jarvis. Against Cedar Rapids, the top team in the division, he held them to two hits and two walks over 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He ended the game with nine strikeouts. He has now made nine starts this season and is 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA. In 42 innings, he has walked 20 and struck out 43 batters. He started slow, but he has had three straight terrific starts over the past two weeks. Jarvis was the Brewers fifth-round pick in 2018 out of Lake Norman High School in North Carolina. In 2019, he pitched for then Low-A Wisconsin where he went 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA. After a lost 2020 season, Jarvis went 1-7 with a 5.40 ERA with nearly a strikeout per innings for now-High-A Wisconsin in 2021. He pitched in the Arizona Fall League after that season. The bullpen stalwart was Matt Hardy. He worked 5 1/3 innings over three games. He gave up no runs, two hits, walked three (though two were intentional) and struck out six batters. Feel free to discuss the Brewers' prospects and their affiliates in the COMMENTS below.
  6. I am assuming that the fact that he got sick and missed a week probably played a role in it... Maybe... that and the walks.

  8. Right, and even if it was full at 40, it sure sounds like Peralta could be put on the 60-Day IL safely. It worked out for the Brewers. File got through waivers and stays in the organization, which is great... Just seems like a weird risk.

  10. Also, I know File isn't a top prospect, but he is a prospect. Not sure why they felt the need to DFA him, especially with three spots still open on the 40-man roster? Do we think they just thought now was the time? I know he's struggled a bit in Triple-A, but that part of this series of transactions has me wondering.

  12. I know Ethan Small got sick last week, and he's starting earlier this week, but could he come up and fill a rotation spot? Could they move Ashby into a permanent (until Peralta is back) rotation spot with maybe Small filling that long-relief/spot starter role? Or, do they just use that spot as a revolving door for the back of the bullpen?

  14. The Brewers are in first place. Nashville is in first place. Biloxi, Wisconsin, and Carolina are all in second place, well within striking distance. Find out which teams on are the rise, which players are hitting or pitching well, and how the organization’s top prospects performed this week and throughout the season. We are now at the quarter-point of the season. Of course, that means that for minor leagues that play two halves, the first half is just over half complete. Playoff spots can be won by finishing at the top of their divisions in the first half. At that point, records will go back to 0-0 and the second half will begin. Triple-A plays the full season. The other full-season leagues all play two halves. Biloxi is currently tied for second place. Carolina is in second place and part of a three-team race in the division. Wisconsin is one game behind Cedar Rapids in their division. This week, the Timber Rattlers will be in Iowa to take on the Kernels. Patrick McGuff, a development coach with the Timber Rattlers, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2016 and played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2017. The Brewers hired him in January and he gets to work with a terrific coaching staff and some really exciting pitching prospects. I had the chance to chat with McGuff on Monday night about his time with the Twins, his transition to coaching, and some of the great talent he is excited to work with in Wisconsin. TRANSACTIONS The Brewers made a few player transactions announced on Monday. LHP Josh Hader was placed on the family medical emergency list. RHP Freddy Peralta was placed on the 15-Day IL with a shoulder strain. RHPs Trevor Kelley and Miguel Sanchez were both recalled to the Brewers. RHP Dylan File was outrighted to Nashville. RESULTS Last week’s Week in Review (5/10-5/16): Wiemer Powers Shuckers Tuesday: Promotions Aplenty, a Center Field Showcase, a 3-1 Evening Overall Wednesday: A 2-2 Affiliate Wednesday Still Feel Great After Hiura’s 11th Inning Walk Off Thursday: Carolina Rolls, But Three Other Affiliates Lose in Late Innings Friday: Two Comebacks (One EPIC!!) and a Nashville Shutout Victory Saturday: Things Stay Knarr-ly in Wisconsin, Weather Rears Its Head in the Southeast, and Wiemer Finishes a Triple Shy of the Cycle Sunday: Nashville and Wisconsin Come Back to Pull Out Late Victories WEEK IN REVIEW Triple-A: Nashville Sounds Week: 5-1, hosting Louisville Season: 29-12 overall, 1st place in the International League West. That pushes their season Run Differential to +86! Their 29-12 record would have them 3 1/2 games ahead of the Rochester Red Wings if they were in the IL East Division. Jason Alexander had the best start of the week for a Nashville pitcher. He tossed five scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, walked two, hit one, and struck out five batters. Tyler Herb made his first Nashville appearance. The 30-year-old had made 30 previous appearances in Triple-A with the Giants, Orioles, and Mariners organizations going back to 2018. He worked four scoreless innings. He gave up four hits, walked two (1 intentional), and struck out three batters. Likewise, Andy Otero made his first appearance for Nashville this year. The Sounds will travel to Toledo for the week to take on the Mudhens. Pitching Probables (LHP Ethan Small, RHP Jason Alexander, Dylan File, RHP Josh Lindblom, RHP Caleb Boushley, LHP Ethan Small) Double-A: Biloxi Shuckers Week: 2-4, @ Mississippi Season: 18-21 overall, tied for 2nd place in the Southern League South Division with Mississippi. They are 3 1/2 games behind Pensacola. It’s been a season of ups and downs for the Shuckers. The team was outscored 23-34 on the week. The two games they won, they won by just one run. Two of their losses were by five runs. Joey Wiemer again had a big week. In six games, he went 8-for-26 and hit .308/.357/.615 (.972) with two doubles, two home runs, and four stolen bases. In one game, he was a triple shy of the cycle. Jakson Reetz is forcing his name into the lineup with his performance. Last week, he went 6-for-24 and hit .250/.333/.625 (.958) with three home runs and six RBI. Five Shuckers relievers pitched at least twice and at least three innings. In 1 2/3 scoreless, hitless, walkless innings, he struck out two batters. TJ Shook made his first Shucker start. He tossed three scoreless innings despite giving up three hits and three walks. He also struck out three batters. What’s Next? The Shuckers will be hosting the Montgomery Biscuits (15-19), the Double-A affiliate of the Rays. Pitching Probables (RHP Justin Bullock, RHP JT Shook, RHP Victor Castaneda, RHP Noah Zavolas, LHP Nick Bennett, RHP Justin Bullock) High-A: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Week: 3-3, hosting South Bend Season: 25-14 overall, 2nd place in the Midwest League West Division, 1.0 game behind Cedar Rapids. The Timber Rattlers were able to gain one game last week on Cedar Rapids ahead of the first series between the two teams of the season. The Rattlers were outscored for the series, but as you would expect from a series split, it was by just one run. Just two Rattlers hitters posted an OPS over .733 for the week. As it has been all season, the Wisconsin starting staff was fantastic. Brandon Knarr struck out seven batters over six scoreless innings in his start. He gave up five hits, walked one, and struck out seven batters. He was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week. Justin Jarvis gave up two runs (1 earned) on four hits and two walks in six innings in his start. He struck out ten batters. Antoine Kelly made two starts and worked 12 innings. He gave up four runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out 18 batters. Cam Robinson came in for two appearances. The Timber Rattlers head down to Cedar Rapids to take on the division-leading Kernels in a series that could mean a playoff spot for one of the teams. Pitching Probables (RHP Ryne Moore, RHP Justin Jarvis, LHP Russell Smith, LHP Brandon Knarr, LHP Antoine Kelly, RHP Ryne Moore) Low-A: Carolina Mudcats Week: 4-2, hosting Down East Season: 21-18 overall, 2nd place in the Carolina League North Division, but just 1/2 game behind Lynchburg and 1/2 game ahead of Fredericksburg It was a good week for the Mudcats offense. They outscored Down East 35-23. Twice they won games by a seven-run differential. He played all six games. He went 8-for-26 and hit .308/.357/.615 (.972) with two doubles, two homers, and three RBI. He also went 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Overall, he has played 39 games this season with Biloxi. He is now 47-for-155 and hitting .303/.372/.607 (.979) with 14 doubles, 11 home runs, and 30 RBI. He is also 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts. The 23-year-old was the Brewers’ fourth-round pick in 2020 out of the University of Cincinnati. At 6-5 and 215 pounds, Wiemer is an incredible athlete. He’s got better-than-average speed. He’s got immense power potential. Defensively, he has the range, but he’s also got a very strong arm. Pitcher of the Week: RHP Justin Jarvis, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Another week, another Timber Rattler starting pitcher is our choice for pitcher of the week. In his start last week, Justin Jarvis gave up two runs (1 earned) on four hits. In six innings, he walked two and struck out ten batters. Jarvis was the Brewers’ fifth-round draft pick out of his North Carolina high school in 2018. He signed and spent that summer with the Arizona League team. In 2019, he went to then-Low-A Wisconsin and went 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA. After the lost 2020 season, he went to now-High-A Wisconsin in 2021. He struggled to the tune of a 1-7 record with a 5.40 ERA in 17 starts. Following the season, he pitched in seven games for Salt River in the Arizona Fall League. This season started out with Jarvis again struggling. In his first five starts, he went 1-2 with a 7.91 ERA. In 19 1/3 innings, he gave up 19 hits, walked 12, and struck out 16. Six of the hits were home runs. However, in his last three starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. In 16 innings, he has given up 16 hits, (3 homers), walked six, and struck out 19 batters. He appears to have turned things around, and more exciting, still has the potential to keep getting better. Overall on the season, he is 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. In 35 1/3 innings, he has 18 walks and 34 strikeouts. ------------------------------------------------------ Feel free to discuss the Brewers' prospects and their affiliates in the COMMENTS below. 15. They are 2 1/2 games ahead of Columbus and 7.0 games ahead of Iowa. Nine of the 12 Sounds hitters posted an OPS over .810. For the week, they outscored their opponent 38-21. He tossed four scoreless innings and gave up one hit and one walk. Josh Lindblom made a start. He went just three innings, but he did not allow a run. He gave up one hit and struck out two batters. He also walked four times . Abraham Almonte went 5-for-16 (.357) with two home runs, six RBI and two walks. Mario Feliciano hit .357 (5-for-14) with two walks. What’s Next?

  18. For the second time already this season, a Milwaukee Brewers player has been suspended for 80 games following a positive PED test. JC Mejia will miss the nearly three months of games and be ineligible to compete in the 2022 playoffs. In Apirl, we watched the Brewers' front office quickly react to news that catcher Pedro Severino had been popped for 80 games for his positive PED test. They quickly acquired catchers Victor Caratini (from the Padres) and Alex Jackson (from Atlanta). On Tuesday, the Brewers had to again quickly react to another PED suspension on their roster. This time, reliever JC Mejia, who was just called up last week from Nashville, heads to the restricted list for 80 games after testing positive for Stanozolol. That does free up a spot on the 40-man roster, and the Brewers called up Trevor Kelley from Nashville to take his spot on the 26-man roster. JC Mejia signed with Cleveland way back in 2013 out of the Dominican Republic. After three seasons in the DSL, he came to the States and very slowly climbed the organizational ladder. He finished the 2019 season at High-A Lynchburg. Following the Covid-lost 2020 season, he began 2021 at Triple-A Columbus. By May 21, he made his MLB debut with Cleveland. In 17 games (11 starts), he went 1-7 with an ERA of 8.25. In 52 1/3 innings, he gave up 60 hits (including 13 home runs), walked 24, and struck out 47 batters. After the season, he was DFAd by Cleveland and traded to the Brewers in exchange for infielder David Fry. He began this season with Nashville and was very good. In 10 2/3 innings over nine appearances, he had a 0.84 ERA. He had given up just one run on four hits. He had walked six batters, but he also struck out 15. Needing an arm last week, he was called up to Milwaukee and made two appearances for the Brewers. They didn't go well. He gave up five runs on three hits and three walks in just 1 1/3 innings in his first appearance last Wednesday. On Saturday, he gave up one run on two hits and two walks in one inning. How will the Brewers replace his 23.14 ERA and 4.286 WHIP in their bullpen? 29-year-old veteran Trevor Kelley will get the first shot. He had made 13 appearances for Nashville and worked 13 innings. He was 1-1 with a save and a 0.69 ERA. He had 17 strikeouts and just four walks. Kelley spent the full 2021 season with Gwinnett, Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate, despite a 1.52 ERA and a 10.0 K/9. In 2020, he pitched in four games with the Phillies. He debuted as a 26-year-old with the Red Sox in 2019 when he went 0-3 with an 8.64 ERA in 10 games. The Brewers bullpen has been solid, or at least it's been alright. Well, Josh Hader has been as good as he's ever been, and Brad Boxberger is pitching really well too. They're getting decent performances and looking for more consistency. The roster spot vacated by Mejia is a back-of-the-bullpen spot that will likely be used in lower-leverage situations. It could be a revolving door of pitchers, trying to find someone who can be reliable. For teams expecting to compete, it makes a lot of sense to sign several relievers like Trevor Kelley, and several others pitching out of the Sounds' bullpen. Others who could be considered if needed include Hobie Harris (29), Connor Sadzeck (30), Luis Perdomo (29), Miguel Sanchez (28), and Luke Barker (30). Pitchers such as Josh Lindblom (35), Jason Alexander (29), and Caleb Boushley (28) could be backend bullpen guys as needed as well. And if you're looking for a prospect to come up and contribute, 25-year-old Ethan Small is currently 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA in In 32 1/3 innings, he has 46 strikeouts (12.8 K/9) in his seven starts. The one issue has been the 21 walks (5.8 BB/9). He profiles pretty similarly to Aaron Ashby. So, what are your thoughts on the news about JC Mejia? Can Trevor Kelley fill the role, or do you think it would be a revolving door on the 26 and 40-man rosters? Which veterans are you intrigued by at Nashville? And, what circumstance would you consider best for bringing up Ethan Small? Leave your COMMENTS below. View full article

  20. I've always believed in making sure that the players get credit for doing well. I like the daily report because it can be a one-stop shop for fans (and family and friends). It's immediate. I like the weekly one because it's not a big sample size, but it's a full week, 6 games, all against one team. It's a good way to break it up a little bit. I would like to see us do monthly 'awards' for top minor league hitter, starting pitcher and reliever in which we highlight 4-6 players that had strong months and who had the best month. A month is a pretty good sample size. Then, the players of the year articles. That's a significant chunk of time. Ups and downs, maybe a promotion in there. Anyway, that's my passion. Making sure that the minor leaguers get talked about.

  22. Thanks for the comments. Of the four weeks that we've done these weekly reports, Knarr has been pitcher of the week twice... and I remember writing that he probably could have won at least one more too. Can't help but wonder if he'll soon be on his way to Biloxi.
