  1. There's really no 'right' involved, AFA Chourio is concerned. Contact play, you go. It's not his decision. If any one of the aforementioned 4 things don't go the way of the defense you're probably safe. I get how frustrating it is when it doesn't work, but with one out it's what you usually see teams do. I suspect there are #s for this somewhere that show the odds are much better going contact than if you wait/hope for a 2-out base hit.
  2. Chourio didn't necessarily 'think' he'd be safe. One out. Contact play on a ground ball. I know many hate that but it's pretty much universal throughout MLB, save for a comebacker. You roll the dice on the positioning, the clean pickup & a good throw--not to mention it being a tag play--not all going the way of the defense, as opposed to hoping for a 2-out base hit. Might have gone differently if Contreras didn't go up to the plate as if there was a shot clock on his swinging the bat. Just horrible.
  3. Dinges DOES seem special. Matthew Woods' first foray into AA is going well so far so I hope Dinges sticks in Appleton for most, if not all, of 2025. Continue to polish up the defensive game. If he sticks at C they're really sitting pretty between him & Quero.
  4. I just don't want to see one of those deals where he's called day-to-day & then they decide to IL him after the weekend while in the meantime we've gone 6-7 games a player short. Like @Oxysaid, 'renewed swelling' doesn't sound good.
  5. Yep. I get that they're family & friends of the kid. But I've seen people in such situations print out t-shirts or some such thing. Full-blown Braves' gear is a little strange when you can assume many of them are Brewers' fans since they're from the Madison area. The fact that there were a good # of Braves fans there besides them for whatever reason added to it, plus that the home team got crushed pretty good on Monday. No biggie.
  6. Yeah, between having to watch Braves' stuff postgame ( I usually don't watch pregame) and Madison West grads wearing Braves' gear, I'll be glad when this series is over.
  7. After back-to-back nice outings using the opener, I'm a little concerned about Priester starting the game (if that's what winds up happening). Not that he can't do it but there might be a comfort level there & he's gotten into a nice groove. There's a mental aspect to this game; I just hope this doesn't mess with anything.
  8. As he matures we should see the BB totals grow & the Ks decrease. The sooner the better for that, but hitters mature on different time frames so who knows? If/when Yelich & Contreras get more consistent behind him, you'd think he'd get more to hit. But if the chasing continues he won't. I'm also in the camp that the move to CF might've been a bit of a mental monkey wrench.
  9. The mechanics of that line up pretty well; I like the concept. Ozuna K's quite a bit but that's been somewhat tempered by his drawing a lot of walks as he's matured. And when he hits one of those stretches where he's seeing the ball well.......... The only thing is, this would appear to be strictly a bat-for-prospect deal as you alluded to. But I'd definitely check on what they're thinking. We have this Rosario kid in AAA; maybe they'd be interested.
  10. That's what makes it difficult for me. I'm afraid Dalbec would be a windmill if he faced MLB pitching, but I really don't want another LH bat either. I'd go Rosario in what I think is a pretty tough call.
  11. Hypothetical for the minor-league gurus: If an OF in Milwaukee went on the IL (I know, perish the thought; we've had enough of that already) & it would be between Rosario & Dalbec to get the call, who would we see?
  12. They should certainly consider trades; but the question always is (and needs to be) at what cost? Every year at deadline time, and I'm sure we'll hear it this year as well, is ADD A BAT!!!!!! ADD TWO BATS!!!!! We've had bats available on the market in past years, but I've refrained from complaining when we don't get them because unless you're a fly on the wall you don't know what the cost would've been. They've built a foundation on pitching depth, defense, and upped the level of speed & baserunning while trying to develop hitting. That won't, and shouldn't change. Black(?), Wilken & Boeve missing huge swaths of time hasn't helped. There does seem to be an excess of rotation arms, but that probably necessitates dealing with a contending team which makes it a little trickier.
  13. Ideally, Bauers or Collins should be available if you need a PH late in the game as that's pretty much the best the bench has to offer. So yeah, flipping one for the other hamstrung them.
  14. The more dicey reason is you already spent Monasterio. The reason it's dicey is Haase could play 1B & then you move Monasterio to SS. The better reason is you might have Ortiz' spot come up again, which it did. But Ortiz wasn't lifted THAT time either, so the bottom line is he liked Ortiz hitting more than Haase or Cameron.
  15. I'm far from a big Murphy critic but I'll play today. The Monasterio for Hoskins PR move wasn't totally w/o merit but can be questioned. And please, if anyone hears the presser I'd love to know what led to Peralta not staying in for the Machado AB, and THEN getting lifted. Although Ortiz came up with a hit in the 9th, I'm a little surprised Haase wasn't sent up for him & told to be a modern-day Russell Branyan. This was a frustrating weekend. But if they continue to pitch at a level that holds a team like SD to six runs in three games I'll take my chances, with or without this offense. Obviously we needed much more the last few days from the people they need to count on regardless of anything else----Yelich, Chourio & Contreras.
  16. Just a little note here to show appreciation for Isaac Collins. I don't want it to sound like he's bereft of talent because he's obviously not, but guys who have been blessed with more natural ability have never come close to making a mark in MLB. He's shown remarkable plate discipline that's carried over to the highest level, and after the Padres got sick of seeing him walk all weekend, he got pitches to hit & came up with a couple of knocks, both critical to the win. And being a switch hitter doesn't hurt. We all talk about the crunch on the roster with all the pitching options and rightfully so, but If/when Perkins & Mitchell make it back and assuming health in the OF there will be some tough decisions forthcoming there, too.
  17. Hah!! Well done. Now do everyone that took a strike & put up a successful AB.😁. It tied into my earlier point. He looked FB, got it & tomahawked it really well. If it was a breaking ball at the knees on the outer half (a strike) he probably misses it or hooks it on the ground to SS. Or, more likely, takes it. Terrific job getting on top of a pitch that was letter-to-shoulder high.
  18. This sort of indirectly relates to another factor in this...........anticipating/guessing. If a hitter is guessing breaking ball & gets a FB, it isn't a good bet he'll do much with it even if it's down the middle, hence the take. Same thing in reverse, to a little lesser extent. Those are many of the pitches 'right down the middle' that get watched. @nate82 mentioned Chourios' lack of walks going back to his time in the minors, when he was a teenager. He's right about that, and it's largely an end product of chasing. If it doesn't improve over time he won't reach whatever his full potential is. Fortunately there have been positive, although sporadic, signs of improvement.
  19. 2-0 is a so-called 'hitters' count'. So is 2-1. I'd feel the same, confidence-wise, either way. I don't know what else to tell you. I'm sure you watch a lot of baseball. You see people take "hittable" pitches all the time, and not just Brewers' hitters. If you want Ortiz being aggressive in the above situation---and Isaac Collins swinging 3-0---all the time, every time then you're in for some disappointment.
  20. Fair enough. I disagree. Collins has spent his professional career, in part, by reaching base a respectable amount of the time any way that he can. Employing your strategy 100% of the time, I'm very confident he would never have sniffed a roster spot.
  21. What if it's 2-0, the opposing pitcher just walked the bases loaded, you're Joey Ortiz, there are two outs, and the on-deck hitter is working on a three-hit day? Look, I appreciate the #'s you posted. But there really is no such thing as 'this is what you should do' w/regards to something like this. There isn't enough bandwidth to discuss the myriad of situations that factor into this stuff.
  22. IMO both sides of this argument are flawed unless you look at the entirety of each individual situation, instead of arguing for a "one size fits all" approach. With men on base & a sense of familiarity from previous ABs, ambushing early can be a great thing. I've seen countless times when we put ourselves in bad counts by being too passive. I've also seen games when the opposing BP was shot coming in, but we can't take advantage because the starter goes seven innings on 83 pitches due to over-anxiousness. And late in games, there are tons of hitters that want to see a first pitch from a new reliever. Again, this isn't a one size fits all thing. Did you want Isaac Collins swinging 3-0 tonite?
