  1. The team website lists Kuechel as the starter. Junis following him would be a good guess, but it's not like Kuechel has been limited. He's averaging btwn 5-6 innings a start for Tacoma.
  2. I hear ya. But we need to remember just how good 'good Elivs' looked last year. He's healthy. If he can re-discover whatever might be missing from '23, be it release point, stride, or whatever other mechanic might need to be tweaked, I think he's much better than anyone we would add in a trade.
  3. In postgame, Murphy said if they scored runs in the 8th Wilson was probably coming back out. Wilson is such a perfect guy to use an opener for. Was afraid they wouldn't use one w/Koenig unavailable. Glad Milner threw two innings; gave up a couple hard hit balls vs a couple talented hitters but IMO he was OK. Four pretty hard hit balls by Chourio. Love how he's looking to go to right. I thought he was omitting that from his approach for awhile now. Damn, Pegueros' slider must've been vicious. Up until the HBP, quite a few bad looking swings from a couple of pretty good bats. Lets oil up the brooms.
  4. That's why I'm more than fine with this as a cash deal. Get the guy with Chris Hook & see what happens.
  5. I know nothing about Kuhnel. But the 5-pitch mix along with the 15-16 MPH difference in his stuff sounds good. It's like the old days in the barber shops in the 1950s-60s-----"Next".
  6. Just said he's reached 6 for his last 8 & is seeing the ball well right now. If you watched his recent ABs--especially the walks-- he certainly is. Taking lots of stuff that he was chasing the last six weeks. No, he isn't suddenly the 2nd coming of Gates Brown.
  7. Over 162, we would ALWAYS rather have Ortiz at the plate than Monasterio. But when you see a regular get a day off, usually the guy replacing him isn't going to be pinch hit for until you get to the later innings. It's just kinda the way it's done with pretty much all teams. Besides, in his next AB Monasterio came up with the wicked line shot to CF to drive in the run.😛
  8. This smelled a lot like the early season offense to me. Five hits & three walks drawn by the bottom 4 spots in the order. I GUESS you can say Freddy is maturing, because he was back to Bad Freddie today--uncompetitive pitches w/two strikes leading to a way too high pitch count--but found a way to keep them off the board through four. But that walk in the 5th to the 9-hole hitter was bad, bad, bad. Payamps looked moderately better. In his last 8 ABs, Jake Bauers has reached base six times. Just pointing out that he's suddenly seeing the ball & recognizing pitches really well lately. Or maybe I just want to make peoples' heads explode.
  9. Yeah, like Stroud. And a lot of other guys flip-flopping from one commitment to another all over the country. It has to be maddening to a P-5 football or basketball coach, It's one thing to kiss a kids' a** for months & months, but now to do it simply to get a commitment, and a month later a "Oh, just kidding. I'm thoroughly blessed, you've been wonderful, thank you. With that being said........" They have a portal transfer from Stephen F Austin named Brandon Lane, a D-lineman. He committed to Michigan State in Late April. In early May he de-committed. Later that month he committed to Louisville. He de-committed from there four days later. That same day he committed to Wisconsin. It's been a month & he's apparently still committed, which tells me he's either been comatose or is the PTBNL in the Hepburn trade.
  10. Can't deny Fickell & his staff are killing it in recruiting these days. But with the current climate I can't help but think "OK, we got so-and-so, but between now & when he shows up for his first practice, will someone offer him more?" Not to be a downer, but I'm seeing kids flip back & forth 2 or 3 times before setting foot on campus. When someone announces they're going to a certain school, what we need to do is come up with a different term. "Commitment" doesn't really fit anymore. On the plus side, Clayton sounds like a heck of a good edge rusher.
  11. UW beat out USC & FSU among others for Clayton. I commend him for getting in the obligatory "That being said" already. Usually that's reserved for when someone leaves.
  12. Do you realize the bad jokes you'd be opening yourself up to if you had typed this fifty years ago?
  13. I never thought of the possibility of him making it to Anaheim. I'd probably still put it at <50% but wouldn't mind seeing it happen. As you said the Halos really have nothing to lose.
  14. Nice to see that someone else sees a touch of Votto in Blacks' setup & swing!! And the willingness to take pitches adds to it. As to the Jim Slaton reference, you got me there🤔. I think Clancy nailed it re Hiura. Someone gave him some bad advice, he ran with it, and was never able--or was unwilling--to adjust back. Just unfortunate to see someone get to the point where they look so lost.
  15. I'm hoping part of the deal today was he was sent in to face a bunch of LHH that we couldn't get out all weekend to save our lives. But you're right about the slider. A telltale was that he really seemed to be relying on the FB in Thursdays' game. And when he threw a slider w/two strikes to Cronenworth, ballgame. I'm hoping it's a 'feel' thing that comes back.
  16. With all the LHH coming up in the 8th I thought they might. It would be in keeping with the idea of sending Megill out there w/a four run lead in the 9th. They did one but not the other. Maybe a little weird.
  17. AFA Frelick & 3B are concerned I see him as someone, in an extra-inning game with multiple managerial moves involved, where you might stick him there b/c Dunn is no longer on the roster. If anyone is concerned about Ortiz moving to SS next year & Frelick being in line to replace him, I doubt that's even on their radar. With a four-man bench standard these days versatility is important & they're interested in seeing how much he has. I think (hope) it's nothing more than that.
  18. I see him trying to spray at times, then he seems to "go away" from that, which is curious. I agree with everything in your post, except if you want to put the defense into subsets I'd say his fielding is average at worst & probably a bit above, with a sub-par arm.
  19. Fair point. But the differences are that Turang is a GG-caliber defender & plays a position where power isn't a premium. And Turang was never put in a position where driving in runs was part of the job description. Sal, unfortunately, is. I understand the dissatisfaction w/Frelick, especially when comped with a more "central casting" type of corner OF.
  20. Yeah. If baseball were a game where we had no fielders or baserunners & the score was simply kept by technology measuring how hard balls were hit, I don't think I'd want Frelick on my team. Of course I wouldn't care because the thought of that is so boring I wouldn't be a fan. Just exaggerating the point that this is a funny game that many times transcends how hard a ball is hit. I mentioned a while back how he isn't barreling up a lot of balls. For whatever reason, I suspect there are a lot of guys who are better at that bit of math that don't have as many hits, or don't draw as many walks. I think a large part of this is him hitting 5th, which I don't like. I mentioned elsewhere what the solution there could be. He COULD be aced out by Mitchell, if Mitchell can scale back the swing-and-miss.
  21. For the life of me, I'll have a long white beard & still not be able to figure out how Ashby went 5 innings in Philly & only gave up two runs. Great performances by Henderson & Knoth (nice to see Josh pitch into the 6th, too). Needs to clean up some contact issues, but otherwise Bitonti is turning in some real nice numbers. Would love to know from anyone savvy to it--how is he looking at 3B?
  22. I missed much of the game due to all the meteorologists getting their chance to be rockstars tonight. From the little bit I saw, it's been a long time since I've seen a pitcher look as mediocre & still get 5 shutout innings as Vasquez did. Rodriguez was eerily similar to his first couple times out--Good for 2-3 innings then ugliness. I said yesterday the series reminded me of the one last year in Atlanta. I have a better comp--for those old enough to remember, the final series of '82 in Baltimore. Before winning the finale, you just had the feeling during the previous three games they weren't winning, no matter what they did or how the game went. 3-4 western trip is seldom a bad thing, if they can find a way tomorrow.
  23. I'm not a big fan of Frelick hitting 5th either. But if we insist on the same top 3 then the options are limited. And for those who say "Ortiz", if they want to hit him in a more prominent spot then put Ortiz between Turang & Yelich and hit Contreras 4th & Adames 5th. I know Murphy remembers the early season, when the bottom 3rd of the order was helping create big innings, and I think that might have something to do with him liking Ortiz down there. But it's time to get him the extra AB. There would be another possible option if not for Black coming up here & hitting .185. Unless Rodriguez gives us some length I have a funny feeling Junis is following him today.
  24. The back half of this game eerily reminded me of the series in Atlanta last year. Hard hit balls fell. Softly hit balls fell. Want a home run? OK, just tear one off your HR coupon book, good for whenever you want to use it. It's a shame too. Padres were poor defensively. Still, can't bring myself to shed any tears for Rae. I never thought I'd see a baseball game where the momentum would turn on a two out, no one on walk to Kyle Higashioka, but it happened. No excuse. I'll give the offense credit for putting up tough ABs & finally breaking through in the fifth despite Cease A) throwing really well and B) being rewarded with a ridiculous strike zone.
  25. We'll never know, but it seemed to me Murphy bent over backwards to try to get through the sixth inning w/Rea because the only LHP they wanted to have to use tonight was Koenig & he wanted to save him for the next time the order flipped (of course he wound up having to use Milner too). Then the other decisions, which I agree weren't ideal, became unavoidable.
