  1. Here's my microcosm of this series: You get a runner on 3rd w/one out. The infield is playing back, conceding the run. You hit the ball on the ground, not to the pitcher but one of those infielders. The infielder makes what was IMO a pretty dumb decision & throws home. And you still don't score. This was the best they swung the bats the entire series, despite being shut out. Not "well", not "good enough", but better than the first two games. Was anyone surprised when Sanchez hit the crap out of the ball in his last AB & Merrifield hardly have to move? For the 3rd straight day, one of their very good starters was pretty much on top of his game. I call it the teeter-totter, where the pitcher has you taking strikes & swinging at balls. Nola did that about as well as you can do it. As for Ashby, I talked about him building. He continued that today IMO. But still obviously not there yet. 0-2 to a LHH backup catcher hitting in the 170s & he throws 4 out of the zone. That cost him 10-12 extra pitches. Then the back-to-backs (one to the same guy) was just a killer. I imagine he'll stay here & continue to build. Overall, certainly more good than bad from him.
  2. They were. But you'd have to say "relatively speaking", and underline it about five times. I'll say this much, if we have to roll the dice for someone to start today, I guess better a LHP vs this group.
  3. He's been better than that lately. Having said that, his starting today is more a byproduct of our having to go so ridiculously deep into the organization due to injuries than anything else. I'd love to see him be able to continue to build in Nashville. It is what it is.
  4. What I saw the last two days was a couple of the better starters in the NL pretty much on top of their game regarding stuff, velo, location, working from ahead. When that happens they'll hold down us & pretty much everyone else, too. Their relievers on Monday were very good also. What disappointed me was the lack of success yesterday vs Dominguez & Strahm who both looked vulnerable. This series so far has boiled down to two excellent games decided by a few key ABs. Ours were horrible-looking failures By Contreras Monday & Hoskins yesterday, and a failure each night by Turang that weren't bad ABs but still fell short. If they were to lose today & Ashby somehow pitches well, that might be a case of losing the battle but winning the war. I'd be shocked if he looks that impressive but we'll see. Philly might have a somewhat watered-down look with a flight to London coming up, but scoring is the bigger problem, at least in this series.
  5. Junis threw 2 scoreless innings (21 pitches) Tuesday night for Nashville. I would think one more start down there, then either another one or a piggyback w/.............by that time, who knows? Wilson? Clarke? Hall? Ross? Oliver Drake?
  6. And Adames wouldn't have brought nearly as much as Burnes did.
  7. Just to be thorough, Asian & fairly good-looking. She also went to nursing school for a couple years, then quit because she decided she didn't want to be around sick people.
  8. Well, certainly not 'bad' showings. I thought the last two relievers opened the door for them, & we couldn't walk through.
  9. I think it was more 'give me something I can hit to the right side', and he got a perfect pitch to do just that. Not only get it over there, but drive it. Payamps got his bad location out of the way on the 1st pitch & never had a chance to throw another one.
  10. At the end of the day, two damn frustrating, but damn good games. Need to find a way to scratch out more offense vs a pitching staff that is not only very talented, but close to on top of their game both nights (Strahm & Dominguez excluded, there were chances there). But it would also help to not have the baseball gods take a healthy dump in your salad. Bryson Stott could've gotten into a time machine, gone into the future to see where Turang was going to hit the ball, and not stood in a better spot. That follows a WP for a run that isn't because the ball hits Frelick in the foot. Then there's the 5 or so plays where they're out by an eyelash at first (you could see Murphy visibly upset by the last one, and I didn't blame him). Still, needed to find a way & couldn't. Hoskins with a huge failure late. Major props to Hudson for turning in a scoreless outing in which he wasn't given the same zone everyone else had, for some odd reason.
  11. This reminds me of my old GFs' co-worker. She was looking at the stage lineup for Summerfest one year & remarked "I don't know who TBA is, but they must be pretty good. They're scheduled on a lot of stages". She was dead serious.
  12. Agreed. We all know Junis, Ross & Hall aren't the second coming of Catfish Hunter, but given the improved offense & deep bullpen maybe they don't need to be. Some stability (finally) would be nice. I'm not a big fan of Ashby coming back right now, but with the aforementioned three not yet available it isn't like we have a lot of choices.
  13. OMG that's great. You pretty much nailed it.😄
  14. If Uribes' work in Nashville warrants it they'll get him up here. Like Kripes said, somewhere around the AS break would probably be the best way to manipulate it. As to adding to the BP via trade: IMO, no way. Adding to the rotation should be 1st, second & third on their list. Maybe fourth, too lol. The BP is getting to the point where you can have people on the AAAA shuttle who can be relied on. That could blow up at some point, sure. But right now the numbers & work turned in discourage adding anything via trade. Clarke turned in a great outing the other day. Hopefully Hall is getting close. Not counting on Ashby this year, but he's trending upward so you never know. And I wouldn't predict this, it's more unlikely then likely, but stranger things have happened than Craig Yoho being here in September. He's just been bumped to AA & has been pretty unbelievable.
  15. I hear ya. I made a reference last season to a game in Cincy. I was unable to sit & watch it, and when I finally was able to check on the game I decided to get an update from the IGT rather than through audio since I wasn't sure it was still going on. Reading a few pages I figured The Brewers were trailing something like 7-2. Turns out they won in extras. I don't see any way they trade Adames. He's in his last year, so anyone dealing for him is looking at him as a rental, meaning they're in a playoff hunt. Someone in that position isn't giving up a worthwhile starter.
  16. Can't prove it of course but I overwhelmingly believe that if Chourio was playing tonight Bauers would've still been in the lineup.
  17. They have. Some seem concerned that Chourio is going to be a platoon bat, and I don't think that's going to happen. Looking at tonights' lineup in a vacuum I think his not playing has more to do with Wheeler than anything else.
  18. Considering it was Wheeler, the ABs weren't great but could've been worse. I actually thought Turangs' AB with the bases loaded was well put-together up until, of course, the last pitch. Then you still had a chance to snatch momentum w/2nd & 3rd and 2 out and Contreras turned in one of the 2 or 3 worst at-bats of the game IMO. Probably the only one in the lineup who I'd say never had a respectable trip to the plate (maybe Yelich as well) Wilson settled in well, but this was a day you couldn't afford him to take 20-25 pitches to do so. The hindsight machine would crank out that maybe Koenig should've gone two.
  19. Nah. They lost the game. Leaving him on the bench if they felt he should be used late would supercede who else was/wasn't in the lineup. Non-factor. As a group no, they aren't more rational. They ARE comparitively heavy on the passion.
  20. The added challenge is that this isn't just a good team, but a good team that's been playing very well. Maybe a little evidence of them cooling off in the STL series though. Their losing Marsh for a spell certainly doesn't hurt us. Couldn't help but think watching their game last night if there were any "Thomson is a moron" threads on Phillie fan boards after Realmuto was given a full day off, even though there was a spot or two late where he could've helped.
  21. Good point about the 3B not playing deep. But the C needs to stay home, and like I mentioned before if Frelick deadens the ball there's a good chance a runner like Yelich makes it. LHP most likely can't make a play on that side. Just a bad combo of bunted way too hard, and not a good read. After the pitch is released, 1B really has no reason to charge so dropping it on the 1B side away from the P would've been interesting.
  22. Mudcats win while committing seven errors. I think the last time I remember anything like that, I was concerned about players securing a ride from their parents & getting to the game on time. Really nice to see Taylor Clarke turn in an impressive outing today, especially while being stretched out. That, and what Ashby did the other day, make it a good week in Nashville.
  23. Good point. A successful squeeze bunt doesn't necessarily mean you're playing for one run, although in that vaacum i'd have been happy with one. I'll reiterate though, sending up a PH was preferable to me. Hill still had to face one more hitter, and if Hoskins hits & gets passed I'm perfectly fine w/Ortiz hitting w/the bases loaded.
  24. If Black wasn't such a defensive adventure at 1B, he'd be a pretty good fit in the Bauers roster spot. But there's no way they're rolling the dice with his defense especially since Hoskins isn't a 150-game guy at the position. Heck, if Black was able to field w/some versatility he could also be in the Dunn role. Looking past Black, you'll probably see Boeve or even Wilkin (if he moves) make noise at 1B over Clarke. Martinez is an athlete with some intrigue.
  25. Because it was Frelick, and it was a L vs L situation. If he 'kills' it it's most likely an easy run. It's one of those deals where IMO the idea was great, the execution poor. And Yelich needed to do a better job of reading & staying put. Like I said, a PH would've made a lot of sense there. Thanx for the props. Look forward to reading your stuff too.
