Brewers Archived Media Links - 2024 Regular Season

Sunday 4/28: Via WTMJ, Dom Cotroneo's Postgame Show - "The Brewers Take Another 10+ Loss to the Yankees (5-15)"; Jerry Augustine is the guest Via 97.3's "Baseball Postgame Show": - "The Crew fall again to the Evil Empire and Tim Allen is talking about it. Hunter Baumgardt joins in from Am Fam Field." Locked on Brewers with Chuck Freimund - "A Pitching Disaster for the Brewers this Weekend" Latest Milwaukee Tailgate Podcast - "This week the guys discussed a very uneven week capped off by one hell of an #umpshow, Wade Miley's injury and the status of the rotation at this point and going forward the rest of the season." Via the Journal Sentinel Podcast: "The Brewers were able to finish the week 3-4, but it wasn't a great overall stretch, if for no other reason that the team is down yet another starting pitcher (and this time for the whole season). Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe once again try to figure out how Milwaukee can piece it together, especially with Joe Ross struggling, too. The offense has a slow week but does enough for a split in Pittsburgh, followed by a thrilling walk-off win against the Yankees, but then a lot goes wrong (including a mis-Judged play by the umpires Sunday). Remembrew When goes back to 1979 for another unforgettable walk-off against the Yankees, and Curt Blanche reminds us of what's ahead: the Brewers' first games against the Chicago Cubs and former manager Craig Counsell. Then, JR chats with reliever Bryan Hudson, one of the biggest bright spots of the 2024 season thus far. They discuss his Illinois upbringing, his sidearm delivery and, yes, about his height." -

Brewers Archived Media Links - 2024 Regular Season
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Look, I'm a New Englander, and we deal with the regular impact "Nor'easters" in terms of storms. Hurricanes are rare, but not unheard of here. What really opened my eyes and shook me even though I'm not with many of you reading this, was the tornado warning posted at the 01:13:10 hour/minute mark of the show linked above, breaking in during the replay of Pat Murphy's postgame comments. That is harrowing audio, and I hope all of you are safe. Reports from across the nation indicate many elsewhere were not lucky. -
Mike Boeve was taken in the second round (54th overall) by the Brewers last summer out of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where he struck out just nine times in his senior year (167 AB's, 32 walks). Here in 2024, he still outpaces his K's via bases on balls, 18-to-11, but the hit results, as we'll detail below, have leaped into an even higher stratosphere. We're still waiting on his first longball of the season, but there are six doubles and three triples among his 30 knocks thus far. In Brock Wilken's absence (recovery from facial fractures sustained in an HBP), Boeve is seeing time at third base, nine games so far, and is error-free with the Shuckers. He committed one error at the hot corner in an additional five games at third with the Timber Rattlers to open the season. We will be exhausting our thesaurus on Boeve's future offensive output, it appears. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Transaction: As Javik Blake detailed in a Biloxi press release, the Shuckers’ active roster sits at just 25 players. That’s three less than the maximum allowed. While not confirmed, everything we saw previously seems to indicate a shoulder/arm injury of some nature for Brown. Brown joins fellow Biloxi position players Brock Wilken, Wes Clarke, Eduardo Garcia and Felix Valerio on the 7-day IL sidelines. None are out for the minimum, Valerio yet to debut in 2024. Milwaukee Brewers optioned LHP Jared Koenig to Nashville Sounds. Milwaukee Brewers recalled RHP Janson Junk from Nashville Sounds. Nashville Sounds activated LHP Darrell Thompson from the 7-day injured list. Nashville Sounds placed 3B Christian Arroyo on the 7-day injured list retroactive to April 26, 2024. Nashville Sounds placed C Jeferson Quero on the full-season injured list. Quero's placement is a procedural move associated with the 165-man stateside active roster limits placed on MLB organizations beginning this year. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Louisville (Reds) 9, Nashville 3 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Fail to Hold Early Lead in Loss at Louisville - Isaac Collins homered and doubled in 9-3 loss Must have been a fun start to the day for 26-year-old LHP Nick Bennett, pressed into a starting spot given the call-up of scheduled starter Janson Junk to Milwaukee. Pitching in Louisville, where Bennett toiled in college prior to his 6th round selection in the 2019 draft, Bennett gutted through 4.2 innings, surrendering four runs including two home runs. Perhaps he had former connections from the university on hand. Hopefully he was able to cherish the moment. RH relievers James Meeker and Blake Holub each stranded the sole runner they inherited, but then ran into trouble. Meeker made three AAA appearances in 2023, along with two thus far this season, and has not found his footing at the elevated level. Tyler Black was 0-for-4, playing first base. I'd prefer that he see all his action defensively there, but that'll remain to be seen. Isaac Collins in center field again, lighting up his box score line. We know we are always reminding you, but do read the team write-up this morning -- Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 4, Pensacola (Reds) 3 Box Score and Game Log Boeve Plays Hero in 4-3 Shuckers Comeback Win - Brewers’ No. 14 prospect tallies three extra-base hits, rips go-ahead double in ninth, Shuckers snap five-game skid In 2024, 64 at-bats (85 plate appearances) - .469 / .576 / .656, 1.232 OPS It's not that I doubted the Voice of the Shuckers, but I had to slide over to the game logs for Mr. Boeve, here's your link, and sure enough. Seven hitless games among the 26, but none of the 26 games with a "1" in the hit column. Only twice among the 26 contests has Boeve failed to reach base, and in one of those he still managed an RBI. We still wait for the first big fly of his season, but the hit tools are indeed, worthy of Javik's favorite adjective. Cool little paragraph from the write-up, nice to see these other contributions from within the depleted lineup - "In the sixth, the Shuckers tallied three straight two-out doubles from Ethan Murray, Carlos Rodriguez and Andy Yerzy to tie the game at three. Both Rodriguez and Yerzy’s were RBI doubles and helped tally multi-hit nights." Boeve's heroics were viable thanks to near-perfect bullpen work, kudos Caleb Bowman, Sam Carlson and Justin Yeager. Biloxi's "X" feed is filled with highlights from Pensacola, and hints that during the day Sunday the archive of Mike Boeve's pre-game interview will be available. Keep an eye out here for that to be added to the awesome interview page the team maintains. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Wisconsin 5, Peoria (Cardinals) 4 Box Score and Game Log Timber Rattlers Hold on to Win Fourth Straight Game - Wisconsin edges Peoria 5-4 in tight, tense contest at Dozer Park It's easier to get a sense of how well Wisconsin is playing when the games are at home, but we are here to remind you that this team is zooming along, now at 14-6. Outside of one passed ball (costly at the time, video), it was another clean defensive effort. There were three doubles among the ten base hits. Both stolen base attempts by the T-Rats were successful. Shortstop Gregory Barrios was on base thrice more (two singles and a walk) and his placement in the three-hole is well-deserved. Speaking of April breakouts, right fielder Eduarqui Fernandez is clearly feeling his oats. Sidenote - I have no idea where my brain pulled the oats reference from this AM, but it's a real phrase. This was Dylan O'Rae's first game idle in 2024, and given recent results, it seems a fine time for a refresh. It didn't work out swimmingly, but the entrance of key reliever Craig Yoho in the 5th to bridge the planned piggyback efforts of RHP Alexander Cornielle and LHP Brian Fitzpatrick was a nice placement by Manager Victor Estevez, so that Fitzpatrick could begin his stint with a clean frame. Given Fitzpatrick's stellar line, it worked out sweetly. Yoho allowed an unearned run and was on the mound for the passed ball linked above. Keep it going, T-Rats! Final: Salem (Red Sox) 4, Carolina 2 Box Score and Game Log Mudcats Drop Third Straight to Red Sox Regardless of the team we follow or the opponent, we've come to realize that the low-A ball level is the land of heightened walk and strikeout amounts. Mudcat pitchers fanned 16, walked eight and plunked two. That being said, 21-year-old RHP Yorman Galindez' scoring line was officially only blemished by the inside-the-park home run described in the game summary. The $10,000 signing in January 2022 has outpaced that very modest investment. It's been stated previously, but RH reliever KC Hunt (24 in July), needs to be bumped to Wisconsin. The Pirates will likely end up regretting not signing Hunt in 2022, when he was Pittsburgh's 12th round draft pick. Hunt returned to Mississippi State, where to be honest, his four-year career bottom line ERA was poor at 7.67 over 53 appearances. Once again, the Brewers shine on the non-drafted free agent front, inking Hunt on July 23rd last summer. A strong starting pitcher schedule is lined up for Sunday as you'll see via the scoreboard link below. It's highlighted by Biloxi's Jacob Misiorowski, facing Pensacola for the second time this week and coming off his best effort of 2024 last Tuesday. Conveniently, that game doesn't begin until 4:05 Central so flip on over after the big-league Brewers take the weekend series from the Bronx Bombers. Enjoy, everyone! Box score reviewing is a time-honored activity. We've certainly taken part over the many years of Link Reporting, and it's certainly more enjoyable when the bats we root for do their part to avoid the zeroes throughout. The Sounds and Timber Rattlers obliged us on Friday night. With three affiliates on the road and the Carolina home game not lending itself to video highlights, it was a quiet night on the visual media front. Yet that won't stop us from providing you with all the affiliate write-ups and our random observations. Let's do it! Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Transaction: RHP Wilfredo Cordero released by DSL-Brewers1 Via brewersfarm Instagram - Details on Cordero's background and road to the Crew. Be sure to click that player page link above to see the 86 career walks and 20 HBP's in 41.2 innings, the bulk of those in the Rangers' system. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 11, Louisville (Reds) 8 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Pile Up 19 Hits, Hold Off Bats For Win - Seven Nashville batters log multiple knocks in 11-8 triumph for first win of series at Louisville This is a very strong candidate for offensive box score of the year thus far. Hello again, Isaac Collins. On base five times, including a double. The 26-year-old switch-hitter lifted his OPS to .997. The December 2022 minor league Rule 5 pick out of the Rockies' system has played center field in 56 games, but this was his first there at the AAA level. Milwaukee controls Collins' rights through the 2025 season. If outfielder Chris Roller was able to net a 40-man roster spot after a strong end to the 2023 season, there's hope for Collins to impress similarly during this two-year stretch. Tyler Black led off and played first base, they say all box score hits are line drives, but this video compilation shows otherwise. That being said, Black's presence on the big-league roster seems certain for 2024, the question will be if circumstances will warrant pre-All-Star Break. The pitching lines were middling, but the 27 Sounds baserunners will mesmerize us for a bit this morning. Enjoy. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Pensacola (Reds) 4, Biloxi 1 Box Score and Game Log Shuckers Threaten Late in 4-1 Loss to Blue Wahoos - Biloxi brings up tying run in ninth for second straight night, Blue Wahoos clinch series win How do you follow up an eight-game win streak? With five straight losses, unfortunately. This box score review did not run with Nashville's intro, to be sure. Interesting tidbit - Freddy Zamora was hit by three pitches and has already matched his career single-season high with six plunkings. Animal magnetism, baby. Eric Brown, Jr. has not hit the IL with his apparent shoulder injury, but he last played back on the 17th. Add in sidelined starters Brock Wilken, Wes Clarke and Eduardo Garcia, and the offensive malaise can be explained to a great extent. Catcher Darrien Miller walked twice and sports a .432 OBP in the early going. Not sure how often he's been slotted into the cleanup spot in his career, but that's his slot given the current Shuckers' output. RHP TJ Shook was solid through his five innings and 79 pitches. LH reliever Justin King's 2023 with the Rattlers rarely saw balls in play, with 54 K's and 25 walks in 30.2 innings. King has only walked one in his five appearances thus far, but has been hittable in, let's face it, the still-tiny sample. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Wisconsin 9, Peoria (Cardinals) 4 Box Score and Game Log Rattlers Hit Three Homers to Beat Chiefs - Fernández, Barrios, and Wood hit blasts in 9-4, rain-soaked victory They've flown under the radar because it's not a top-prospect laden collection of talent, especially minus Mike Boeve, but Manager Victor Estevez has this T-Rat team cruising, now 13-6. Clean defense more often than not, timely balls in play, and nice mound work. That recipe cooked again on Friday, and while it's only April 27th this morning, the sample size on shortstop Gregory Barrios' breakout is getting more significant, now 71 plate appearances with a .910 OPS. Only four walks thus far, but just 12 strikeouts. Luis Lara stole three bases and is now 9-for-12 in 2024 attempts, after swiping 30 in 40 tries last year. The bottom of the order contributed in a big way, as your box score perusal showed. That's been part of the Wisconsin success story in 2024, there isn't a gaping black hole portion of the lineup on a nightly basis. Who remembers that OF Eduarqui Fernandez signed for $1.1 million out of the Dominican Republic in 2018? The 2020 pandemic season gap really blurs our historical line perspective. This is just Fernandez' age 22 season (23 in November), but he has much to do to truly excite us, it's been a middling slog thus far, but credit where due in 2024. RHP Brett Wichrowski threw 48 strikes among his 68 pitches, fanned seven while walking only one. That effort doesn't dim his shine at all. Make sure you catch up with Kyle Lobner's latest T-Rat Talk entry featuring Wichrowski, RH reliever stud Yerlin Rodriguez has settled into pitching every three days, and closed things out even with a five-run lead. Final: Salem (Red Sox) 3, Carolina 1 Box Score and Game Log David Garcia Records Three Hits in Mudcats Defeat to Salem 24-year-old catcher David Garcia, the longtime Rangers farmhand in his first season with the Brewers' organization, likely deserves to be elsewhere, but for now he'll bide his time with the Mudcats. Speaking of newcomer "Garcia's" to the Crew, Yhoswar Garcia is pretty intriguing. Tough to ignore the .340 batting average (hey, they still list batting average in the boxes) and it's 11 steals in 14 attempts through 14 games for the former Philly. RHP Josh Knoth only threw 33 strikes among his 60 pitches, thus the four walks, But only one hit allowed and six K's through 3.1 innings tantalizes. Kudos to RHP's Aidan Maldonado and Jeison Pena for keeping things close late, all nine men combined retired with six K's. Enjoy your Saturday, everyone. Promising RH starter Yorman Galindez kicks things off for Carolina at 4:00 Central. It's evening action for the other affiliates.
