SAINTS' KRAUSE SOLD TO MILWAUKEE http://www.americanassociationbaseball.com/images/news/1219855136.jpg St. Paul OF Among League Leaders in Five Offensive Categories DURHAM, NC - The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today that St. Paul Saints OF Brent Krause (pictured) has been purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers. Krause will be sent to Double A Huntsville. Krause batted .317 for St. Paul with 19 home runs, 56 RBI and 112 hits in 93 games. He also scored 71 runs, collected 25 doubles and had a slugging percentage of .555. The resident of Andover, MN finished tied for first in extra base hits (45), tied for third home runs, fourth in slugging percentage, tied for fourth in doubles and tied for eighth in batting average. Krause was just recently named to the 2008 Postseason All-Star Team and was a starter for the North Division team in the 2008 American All-Star Game in St. Paul on July 22. The 26-year-old becomes the 11th league player sold to a major league organization since the beginning of the 2008 season. *** Independent League Stats 2004 - 2007 Krause is a corner outfield RH bat, 6'3", 220... *** From April 2007, text follows: Anoka grad Brent Krause is riding baseball's winding road by Zach Nienaber of the Coon Rapids (MN) Sportsweek staff It has been a long trip for Brent Krause whose baseball career has taken him from high school in Anoka to the St. Paul Saints and several Upper Midwest baseball clubs in between. Krause, who signed with the St. Paul Saints just over a week ago, began his playing days in the Anoka program. The 2000 graduate went on to play college ball at Jamestown College in North Dakota, where he set virtually every hitting record on the books for the Jimmies. Krause then bounced around the Northern League. He spent time in Schaumburg, Sioux City, and eventually Fargo-Morehead when he found a home. "I didn't really know what to expect from professional ball," said Krause. "It was a good experience once I got Fargo. I knew a lot of people in the area and had some friends from college there." It didn't take long for Krause to fit in. During that 2005 season Krause earned rookie of the year honors in the Northern League hitting .327 with 14 home runs and 51 runs batted in for the Redhhawks. During that season the Minnesota Twins began showing interest in the slugging outfielder. "Once the [Fargo-Moorhead] season was over they [the Twins] contacted me again and we signed a contract," said Krause who headed to Florida for spring training in 2006. While there, however, Krause pulled his oblique muscle that caused him to miss 11 games and ultimately led to his release. Krause subsequently returned to Fargo Morehead where he continued to put up solid numbers in hopes of a return to affiliated minor league baseball. While this did lead to a few workouts this spring in Florida, Krause ultimately signed with the St. Paul Saints now of the American Association. "It will be nice to come home and play in front of the home town fans," he said of his deal with the Saints. During the off season Krause spent time in San Andres, Mexico as apart of the Liga Invernam Vera Cruz Ana Winter League. Since his return to Minnesota, Krause has been working with Corey Eckhoff at Velocity Sports Performance in Champlin on his speed and base running. "Working in Mexico was different. The pitchers there rely more on off speed pitches so you have to change your approach at the plate," said Krause. Now back in Minnesota with the Saints, Krause is looking for one more chance to catch on with an affiliated minor league team. "Consistency will be the key," he says. Regardless of his key, his hometown fans can now check him out in St. Paul. *** (among them HR derby, grand slam, depending on selection)

Starting pitcher Cody Adams of Helena went seven innings for the win. He allowed eight hits and one run, the lone tally being a home run by the Voyagers' Johnny Celis. Adams, who is now 4-4 on the season, struck out six batsmen and gave up two bases on balls. "He (Adams) pitched a darn good game," said Brewers manager Rene Gonzales. "He was able to stay out in front by consistently getting strike one. Adams was using three pitches tonight, his off-speed stuff was there. He only made one mistake all night, on a high change-up." The local hurler worked himself out of a tough jam in the sixth frame, when with runners on second and third and only one out, Adams bowed his neck and struck out Mike Grace and Kyle Shelton to end the inning. The Voyagers outhit the home team, 9-6, but Helena took advantage of their base knocks, while the local defense twisted three double plays to kill Electric City rallies. Brock Kjeldgaard put the Brew Crew out in front in the opening stanza, scalding a two-run dinger on an 0-0 pitch over the left field fence. They added two more in the third, when left-handed hitting Erik Komatzu drilled a ball to deep right-center, which reached the wall on one bounce for an RBI triple. He then sprinted home on Kjeldgaard's infield grounder to third. The hosts closed out their scoring on a John Delaney solo bomb in the seventh, putting them up by a score of 5-1. The Voyagers threatened in the top of the ninth, tallying a pair of runs, before reliever Adam Arnold ended the contest with a whiff to collect his fifth save. The Brewers also used relievers Brandon Rapoza and Santo Manzanillo. Joshua Balleaud was hung with the loss. Helena's John Delaney went 2-for-2, while the Voyagers' Jesus Avila was 2-for-4 with a double. The Capital City group did not commit an error, as Kjeldgaard and centerfielder Cutter Dykstra flashed the best leather. Kjeldgaard dug several balls out of the dirt at first for outs, and Dykstra made a spectacular diving catch after a long run on a sinking line drive in the right-center gap. Helena is now 31-35 on the year, just one game back of Great Falls, at 32-34. The two teams meet again tonight at Kindrick at 7:05 (8:05 Central), and the Brewers can move into a second-place tie in the overall standings with a win. Link while active, text follows: Isotopes take advantage of Sounds pitcher's struggles By STEVE SILVER Tennessean Staff Writer Sounds starting pitcher Chris Narveson can't even blame his worst performance of the season on the rain. With rainbows replacing the recent stormy weather at Greer Stadium, Narveson struggled to throw strikes Tuesday night as the Albuquerque Isotopes shelled the 26-year-old lefty for a season-high eight runs en route to a 9-8 victory in front of 2,084 fans. Narveson, who now owns the worst record (6-13) on the Sounds' roster, allowed the runs - seven unearned - on four hits in 4 2/3 innings. "He was doing fine but got a little bit wild there," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "Maybe he got a little tired there. The pitches were just missing." Although Narveson put the Sounds in an early two-run hole thanks to two consecutive walks in the first inning, his teammates bailed him out with a four-run effort in the bottom of the first. Brendan Katin blasted a three-run shot to right field. But Narveson could not hold onto that lead as he allowed five more runs in the fifth inning, including a three-run home run by Isotopes' left fielder Michael Ryan. One mean Heether: Adam Heether went 3-for-4 Tuesday and is batting .417 (35-for-84) over his past 20 games. Washed away: Monday's rain out against the Isotopes was officially canceled and will not be made up. Warm welcome: Third baseman Mat Gamel notched his first career hit at the Triple-A level in his first trip to the plate Tuesday with a single to left-center field. Gamel finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. He was 0-for-4 Sunday against Round Rock. "Oh yeah, he was hitting the ball well tonight, much better than the last game," Kremblas said. Baseball America named Gamel the Southern League's "best batting prospect" after he hit .329 with 19 home runs and a league-high 96 RBIs in 127 games with the Stars this year. -

Link while active, text follows: Salome's stance belies sweet swing Stars catcher cruising toward batting title despite odd approach By BRAD SHEPARD For The Huntsville Times Huntsville Stars catcher Angel Salome cringes when he sees video of himself at the plate. Head up, foot pointing toward third base - he seems a mechanical disaster. Yet from those flawed fundamentals comes a hitter chasing the Southern League batting title. "When they take pictures of me, I'm like, 'Oh my God, what am I doing up there?' " Salome said. "To be honest with you, I don't know how I manage to hit the ball sometimes. I'm natural." Every sport has its mechanical misfits. Athens native Philip Rivers short-armed his way to being an NFL Pro Bowler. Golf instructors cover their eyes when Jim Furyk swings. The Boston Celtics' Rajon Rondo has a hideous hitch in his jumper. Yet they all produce, much like Salome, who's hitting .356 - 23 points higher than anybody else in the league - as the season enters its final week. Salome also has 11 homers and 80 RBIs, and he was at it again Tuesday, launching a two-run homer in a game suspended by rain with Huntsville leading 4-1 in the fourth. Though Salome bails out on many pitches, he has good upper-body strength and plate coverage, considering his 5-foot-7 frame. He frequently drives the ball to all fields. "After seeing him all year last year and this year, I'm amazed how he squares up on every ball he hits," Stars left fielder Cole Gillespie said. "His mechanics are anything but typical, but he's found a way to make his work. "I wouldn't recommend that swing to anybody who doesn't have 22-inch biceps." Though minor league coaches are hired to get players mechanically ready for the big leagues, Stars manager Don Money has left Salome alone at the plate. He said there's no need fixing what isn't broken. "There was a guy who I played against named Roberto Clemente who kind of had an oddball hitting form, and he was a pretty good hitter," Money said. "With Salome, you can't teach it, but you can't tell him to stop it, either. He has good eye-hand coordination, and his upper-body strength is unbelievable." Though he doesn't talk a whole lot about it, Salome's numbers have somewhat given him a feeling of vindication after being suspended 50 games for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs last year. With strict testing occurring post-suspension, he knows people will take notice that these numbers are clean. "Thank God I am proving it right now that I can do it without (drugs), even though I was doing it without it before," he said. "I wanted people to trust me after what happened last season."

Final: West Virginia 7, Lexington (Astros) 3 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER WIN GAME AND SERIES The West Virginia Power offense provided a pair of three-run innings and Evan Anundsen tossed seven strong innings as the Power took the final game of the series at Applebee's Park on Tuesday night with a 7-3 victory over the Lexington Legends. The Legends struck first in the fourth inning on Brian Pellegrini's RBI groundout. The lead didn't last long, as the Power scored three times during the next half inning to take the lead for good. Zelous Wheeler began the inning with a base hit and scored on Curt Rindal's double. Eric Farris then hit a two-run homer with two outs to put the Power ahead. It was Farris's second homer of the series and his third of the season. Eric Fryer walked to start the sixth inning and Steffan Wilson followed with his first of two singles. Caleb Gindl doubled in Fryer and Wheeler knocked in the next two runs on a base hit. The Power scored one final time on Farris's run-scoring single in the eighth inning. The Legends plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Bryan Brown singled in the first run and Steve Brown scored on Craig Corrado's groundout. Anundsen (12-7) allowed just an unearned run on one hit over seven sensational innings to earn the victory. He allowed a double to Craig Corrado in the bottom of the first, and no hits after that. Anthony Bello (7-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Curtis Pasma provided an inning and a third out of the pen, and retired all four batters he faced. The Power improved to 75-59 on the year and 43-22 in the second half with the win. The Legends fell to 43-90 on the year and 22-42 in the second half with the loss. Five Power players turned in multi-hit games, including Curt Rindal, who paced the Power with a 3-for-4 performance. Gindl went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Lee Haydel went hitless, bringing his 11-game hitting streak to an end. West Virginia now has a 3.5 game lead on the second place Lakewood BlueClaws with five games remaining. The Power are off on Wednesday, but will begin a five-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators to finish the regular season at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. The Power will start left hander Lucas Luetge (2-1, 3.09) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Miguel Socolovich (6-6, 4.54). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score Evan Anundsen improved his remarkable ground ball ratio to 2.68 with 13 ground ball outs here... West Virginia Game Log -

Notes from David Weiser at www.starsboxscore.com The Stars are now 3-10 in free "extra inning" baseball. They haven't had a winning record in extra inning games in a season since 2004 when they were 10-5. They are 16-31 since 2005. We may still see Alcides Escobar break the club record for hits, but a more ignominious record was tied Sunday night when Michael Bell committed two errors, giving him 22 on the season, tying him with Scott Brosius who has held the record for a second baseman since 1989........ We won't see anyone pass the 300 mark in total bases now that Mat Gamel has gone to Nashville. He finishes with 273, the most since the late Mike Coolbaugh set the mark. Gamel was one away from Brosius's total of 274 -- the second-most in Stars history....... One record that did fall this year was the record for singles in a season (131) held by Jeff Pickler since 2001. Escobar has 138 and counting....... One record that will fall when the season is done is the record for highest batting average in a season. That has held since 1997 when Mike Neill won the batting championship with a mark of .340. Angel Salome, with just enough plate appearances now to qualify (378) is hitting .356. This was the last Sunday game at the Joe this season. They go on the road to Chattanooga after this to finish out the season, and I plan to be in Chattanooga on August 30. It may also be the last Sunday twi-night game for awhile, too. It's rumored they're making Sunday's all day contests next year....... The Stars need 6,499 at the gate to match last year's attendance. With three games left at home in the middle of the week with rain threatening, it's doubtful they'll get it. More approachable is the record season-low of 158,775 established in 2006. The Stars need just 1,196 to pass it. -
Press Release: THREE POWER PLAYERS NAMED POST SEASON ALL STARS Lexington, KY (August 25, 2008) - Caleb Gindl, Steffan Wilson and Eric Fryer have had fantastic 2008 seasons for the West Virginia Power and on Tuesday, all three were rewarded by being named members of the 2008 South Atlantic League Post Season All Star Team. Gindl, a fifth round pick in 2007 got out to a slow start after winning the Pioneer League batting title with a .372 batting average last season. However, Gindl took his game to a totally different level when the second half of the season began. Gindl was recently named the South Atlantic League Offensive Player of the week after hitting .429 with 12 hits, four homers and ten RBI during the week of August 17th. Gindl's .306 batting average is currently ninth best in the SAL. His 13 home runs are second most on the team and his 80 RBI are third most on the club. Gindl made the team as a utility outfielder. Wilson made the team as a utility infielder. The second year player out of Harvard currently leads the South Atlantic League with 97 RBI. He is six RBI away from breaking a franchise record set by Jason Parsons in 1997. Wilson is also the team leader in home runs with 19. Like Gindl, he also started out slowly with a .203 batting average in April, but Wilson is hitting .323 in the second half of the season. Wilson has made starts at third base, first base, right field and left field. Wilson's .291 batting average is fourth best on the club. Perhaps the most intriguing Power All Star is the guy who didn't even make the opening day roster, yet still has a great shot to win the league batting title. Fryer, a second year player out of Ohio State has been a key cog in the middle of the Power lineup. He is leading the league with his .335 batting average and he has registered 123 hits, despite missing the first month of the season. Fryer made the team as a designated hitter. He was named the Offensive Player of the Week in early June after he went 5-for-5 on July 6th against Hagerstown, capping off a home stand where he went 21-36. In addition to his .335 batting average, he has also homered ten times and he's knocked in 61 runs.
