Final: Carolina (Marlins) 6, Huntsville 5, ten innings Huntsville Site Game Summary: Concepcion Homer Carries Mudcats to Victory Carolina Claims Another Close One From Stars By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Alberto Concepcion belted the game-winning home run in the tenth inning to lift Carolina to a dramatic 6-5 victory over Huntsville Sunday evening in the second of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Mudcats improved to 38-24 in the second half and trimmed their magic number to clinch the North Division title to three, while the Stars fell to 28-34 and were officially eliminated from the race. Carolina has won 12 of the 18 games between the teams with seven of the victories coming by a single run. Steve Bray opened the tenth on the hill for Huntsville and retired the leadoff man Andy Jenkins before Concepcion jumped on an 0-2 offering and drilled his first home run since July 5 over the wall in left field. Bray drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning but was forced at second on a bunt attempt by Michael Brantley before Guilder Rodriguez bounced into a game-ending double play. Bray took the loss to drop to 1-3, while Chris Mobley earned the win to improve to 5-3. Todd Doolittle threw a scoreless eighth inning and took a 5-1 lead into the home ninth before an error and two singles loaded the bases with one out. Chris Errecart doubled in two runs to trim the Carolina advantage to 5-3 and knocked Doolittle out of the game. Mobley came on to strike out Mike Bell before Freddy Parejo singled off the glove of a diving Chris Coghlan at third base to deliver Michael Garciaparra and Errecart to tie the game. The Stars remain winless in 42 games trailing after eight innings and have dropped ten of thirteen extra innings games. Gaby Sanchez doubled in a run and Jenkins singled home Coghlan in a two-run first against Mike Jones, who went four frames, giving up those two hits, while walking five and fanning three. Mudcats' starter Willie Glen was perfect through four innings before Angel Salome reached on a Coghlan fielding error leading off in the fifth and held the Stars hitless through five innings. Parejo led off the home sixth with a single, moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a double by pitcher Donovan Hand, who collected his first hit of the year. Brantley was retired on a comebacker for the first out and Glen was replaced by Tim Wood, who fielded a Rodriguez come-backer and caught Hand in a rundown for the second out. He then retired the next four hitters in order to turn the game over to Doolittle. Glen allowed only two hits and an unearned run, while fanning four, over 5 1/3, while Wood worked a scoreless 1 2/3 innings and struck out three. Hand threw two scoreless innings before two hits and a walk to Coghlan loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. Sanchez then cleared them with a double to make it a 5-1 game and push his RBI total for the season to 88. The series continues Monday night with southpaw Brae Wright taking the mound against Mudcats' left-hander Graham Taylor. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Box Score Score four runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, only to lose another late -- this Stars' season an all-timer in frustration; 22 errors for second baseman Mike Bell is not acceptable... Final: Arizona Brewers 5, Arizona Mariners 4 Arizona Box Score A-Crew survives five errors to post a very rare road win; fine pitching, as Brewer hurlers strike out 12 with no walks; just-turned 18-year-old Canadian RHP Nick Bucci with three perfect innings, as was noted above; 19-year-old recent Florida high school RHP Damon Krestalude, who has been solid all summer despite a very undeserved 0-4 mark coming in, gets the win with two scoreless in relief; three of the miscues were by SS Carlos George, jumping his count to 33 in 42 games; 19-year-old catcher Shawn Zarraga on base four times -- his .308 / .437 / .449 line is so impressive for this league, especially for a catcher toiling in that heat... Lexington has a feature on their web site in which they feature the play of the game. Click on the video link among the rotating feature stories with the two young lady hosts dressed in superhero garb. First will be an interview with the Venezuelan speedster who hit the home run, and that's followed at the 03:00 minute mark by the home run, which was to straightaway center. Logan Schafer found himself too close to the wall as it bounced back past him. Regardless, the kid must have been flying right out of the box, because as you're watching, you figure it will be a sliding triple. Final: Lexington (Astros) 6, West Virginia 4 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER LOSE LEAD, THEN GAME The West Virginia Power had a 3-0 lead through three and a half innings of Sunday night's game at Applebee's Park, but the Lexington Legends erased that deficit by scoring four times with two outs in the fourth inning and came away with a 6-4 victory. Eric Farris began a string of three consecutive two-out singles in the top of the third. Farris stole second and scored on Logan Schafer's RBI single. Schafer scored later in the inning on Eric Fryer's two-out base hit to give the Power a 2-0 edge. West Virginia struck with two outs again in the third inning when Caleb Gindl scored on Lee Haydel's double. Russell Dixon drove in Lexington's first run of the series on a two-out base hit in the fourth inning. Dixon scored on Brandon Barnes's double before Steve Brown gave the Legends the lead on a two-run inside the park homerun. West Virginia tied the game at 4-4 a half inning later. With runners on first and second, Zelous Wheeler hit a groundball back to the mound which Leandro Cespedes fielded cleanly, but when he threw the ball to second base, there was nobody there to cover the bag and the ball went into center field, allowing Fryer to score. The Legends stole the lead again in the fifth inning when Dixon hit the eventual game-winning two-run homer. Cespedes (3-6) did enough to get the victory, allowing four runs on ten hits with five strikeouts over five and two-thirds. Tony Duran (1) picked up the save after tossing three and a third scoreless innings. Reed Dickert (2-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits over two innings of work. Roque Mercedes tossed two and a third scoreless innings of relief. The Power fell to 73-59 on the year and 41-22 in the second half with the loss. The Legends improved to 43-88 on the year and 22-40 in the second half with the win. Logan Schafer paced the Power with a 2-for-5 performance. Caleb Gindl and Lee Haydel both extended their hitting streaks to ten games. Eric Fryer reached twice to bring his on-base streak to 33 games. The Power will continue the four-game series against Lexington Monday night. The Power will start left hander Dan Merklinger (7-9, 6.21) and the Legends will counter with left hander Jeff Icenogle (3-9, 4.31). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). Final: Helena 8, Great Falls (White Sox) 6 Helena Independent Record: Brewers rally to 8-6 win over Voyagers Helena Independent Record A late-game rally boosted the Helena Brewers past Great Falls Sunday and put some life into the team's late-season drive to reach the Pioneer League playoffs. Brock Kjeldgaard hit a three-run double with two outs in the eighth, and Helena scored six runs in the final three innings to beat the Voyagers 8-6 before a crowd of 2,056 at Dehler Field. The win moved the Brewers (29-35) to within three games of Great Falls (32-32) in their overall season records, which will decide the North Division's second playoff team if Billings finishes atop the second-half standings, as it did the first half of the season. Billings lost to Missoula 13-3 Sunday and remained one game ahead of Great Falls. Helena is five games back. Kjeldgaard led the Brewers with four hits one day after striking out five times. Outfielder Erik Komatsu had three hits and scored twice and catcher Mike Roberts had three hits, including two doubles, to highlight the 16-hit attack. The win improved Helena to 7-7 in road games during the second half. Helena (9-17 in the second half) and Great Falls (13-13) meet again today in Great Falls at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) and play Tuesday and Wednesday in Helena. The Brewers are just 2-10 at home. Great Falls scored four runs in the first inning and led 6-2 entering the seventh when the Brewers scored twice -- the second run scoring off a botched pick-off attempt, and then Kjeldgaard put the team up 7-6 with his three-run double, which tied him for the league lead with 24. Helena added a final run in the ninth with back-to-back doubles by David Fonseca and Roberts. The Brewers hit five doubles in the game. In addition to leading the league in doubles, Kjeldgaard, a first baseman, is second in the league in RBI with 57 and second in home runs with 13. Third baseman John Delaney scored a pair of runs and is second in the league in runs scored with 59. Komatsu raised his average to .353 and remains third in the league. Helena Box Score Wonderful win, down 6-2 after six innings; could Erik Komatsu skip low-A next year? Chris Dennis with a .368 OBP, on four times here; Liam Ohlmann, Trey Watten, and Brandon Rapoza combined for seven innings of one-run ball in relief... Helena Game Log

Link while active, text follows: 1st pitch goes on and on ... Hurlers on parade for record books at Joe Davis By MIKE MARSHALL Huntsville Times Staff Writer, mike.marshall@htimes.com A bartender from a Mexican restaurant showed up after last call. Then a 10-year-old boy with his catcher's gear arrived around sunrise. For an hour, the boy caught baseballs. Then he removed his gear and left Joe Davis Stadium. He had a Pee Wee Football game later in the morning. Said Huntsville Stars General Manager Buck Rogers: "When I saw how many people were out here when we first started, I knew we had a chance to break the record. In my years of doing this, I've never had that many people here when we started - and we started at midnight.'' The Guinness World Record for most ceremonial first pitches fell around noon Saturday. The crowd threw 11,689 pitches before time ran out around 7 p.m. A boy in his early teens wearing his youth-league baseball jersey broke the previous record of 8,304, held by the Brevard County Manatees, the Milwaukee Brewers' Class A affiliate in Viera, Fla. Then more people kept breaking the record. Then members of the Stars staff kept writing new record-breaking totals in the dirt near home plate. They used buckets to compile the totals. Each time a bucket was filled, one of the staff erased the numbers in the dirt and added 150. When Mayor Loretta Spencer arrived, there were 9,350 first pitches. "I used to throw out first pitches at the start of Little League season,'' Spencer said. "I was worried I'd hit someone. I'm left-handed.'' Just after 1:30 p.m., Spencer moved near the front of the pitcher's mound, reared back and threw to Brian Massey, the Stars' public relations director. The ball took one hop, then another. Said Rogers: "It's not the number of people; it's the number of pitches. Theoretically, two people could break it.'' But a sizable crowd turned out, more than anyone anticipated. By Massey's estimate, there were more than 50 people at Joe Davis at midnight, when the parade of pitches began. After 1 a.m., when the Stars team bus returned from Birmingham, some of the players joined in. "One of our pitchers, David Welch, has a 6-month-old son, Maddux,'' Massey said. "He threw one out, too. He was the youngest one.'' At 4 a.m., the umpiring crew arrived from Mobile, said Massey. Even the umpires participated. One of the umpires caught. The others threw pitches from second base or the outfield, said Massey. "We were giving them a hard time,'' Massey said. "When they'd throw one from the outfield, we told them, 'Y'all would have called that one a strike.' ''

Huntsville Times: Jeremy Jeffress had struggled in his Joe Davis Stadium debut before tossing a brilliant game on the road at Birmingham last week with a six-inning shutout. On Saturday, he was excellent again. Though he threw 103 pitches, walked three and hit a batter, he was effective with his fastball and curveball in spots. "From my first start, I'm getting through my delivery much better, throwing more strikes, keeping the ball down and pitching to contact," he said. "That's a big key when you move up to different levels. You can't strike everybody out here unless you feel like Superman that day." Chris Errecart, Michael Brantley and Michael Bell led the Stars with two hits apiece, and Martin Maldonado added a two-run single.

Link while active, text follows: Gamel lands big promotion Stars third baseman now headed to Triple-A as Huntsville beats Carolina By BRAD SHEPARD For The Huntsville Times As one top prospect said goodbye to Huntsville on Saturday night, another one took his second step toward proving he belongs. Stars third baseman Mat Gamel received word after the game that he would be promoted to Triple-A Nashville, effectively finishing his season with Huntsville. Meanwhile, the top pitching prospect for the Brewers, Jeremy Jeffress, worked 5 2/3 effective innings to pick up the victory in a 4-1 win over first-place Carolina in front of 2,704 fans. The 20-year-old right-hander allowed one run on six hits and struck out seven in the victory. But the news of the night was Gamel, who has scuffled during the second half of the season - and finished his Stars year going 1-for-4 with a sparkling defensive play - but still impressed Brewers brass enough to earn a promotion. "I'm excited," said Gamel, who's been a man of few words all season. "I feel a lot better at the plate. I'm just starting to see the ball better again and taking better swings. "A change of scenery may be a good thing. I've got to go up there, relax and just play my game." Gamel's average has fallen 55 points during the past month and a half, but he has hit the ball better recently, batting .293 since Aug. 13. His final statistics with Huntsville this season are MVP-worthy: .329 batting average, 19 homers, 96 RBIs, 35 doubles and a .540 slugging percentage. Also, he's cut his errors to 30 from 53 last year and leads all Southern League third basemen in putouts and chances. "Defensively, the best thing I can go off of is what I've seen this year," Stars manager Don Money said. "But (first baseman Chris) Errecart has played with him and caught his throws, and he said he's improved 200 percent." *** No news on a Nashville roster move, they'll have to make room.

Jim Goulart replied to agent39's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Danny, we mentioned in a recent Link Report that he's nursing a hamstring strain. The Stars' training staff doesn't want him to aggravate it by playing right now. See transaction thread for update -- pulled hamstring, out for season. -
Final: Arizona Padres 8, Arizona Brewers 3 Arizona Box Score Just three hits for the A-Crew, including a Uly Snijders solo home run; rough start for still 17-year-old Canadian RHP Stosh Wawrzasek (18 next Saturday); others fared better, including LHP Kristian Bueno, supplemental first round RHP Jake Odorizzi (boy, are the Brewers working him carefully, his high inning count was four on July 24th, and Jake's worked six scoreless innings over his last four appearances), and still with an ERA of 0.00 over 8.2 innings, 17-year-old Venezuelan RHP Francisco Rivero; 30 errors for shortstop Carlos George, not unheard of in this league; 106 degrees at game time -- do you think Stosh encountered that often north of the border? Final: Helena 9, Billings (Reds) 3 Helena Independent Record: Brewers blast four HRs, beat Mustangs 9-3 The Helena Brewers scored a rare second-half victory Saturday, beating Billings 9-3 in a Pioneer League baseball game at Dehler Park. But, the Brewers didn't make up any ground on Great Falls in the race to reach the league playoffs as Great Falls beat Missoula 3-1. The Great Falls win combined with the Billings loss moved Great Falls to within a game of Billings in the second half standings. If Great Falls wins the second half title, it would face Billings, the first half winner, in the league playoffs. Helena, which improved to 8-17 with just its second win in the last 10 games, is four games behind Great Falls in their overall league records, which would be the deciding factor if Billings wins the second-half title. Today, the Brewers begin a four-game stretch against Great Falls, 13-12, with the first two games being played on the road. Helena plays host to the Voyagers Tuesday and Wednesday at Kindrick Legion Field. The Brewers pounded out 10 hits, four of which went for home runs before a crowd of 3,758. Chris Dennis, David Fonseca, Derrick Alfonso and Miguel Vazquez all homered for the Brewers. Vazquez highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a three-run shot. Cody Scarpetta pitched five innings of two-hit ball to score his first win. He struck out six and walked one batter. Relievers Daniel Meadows and Mark Willinsky combined to strike out six and walk just one. Billings pitchers registered 11 strikeouts, including first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard five times. Helena outfielder Erik Komatsu had a pair of hits to raise his average to .348, third best in the league. Helena Box Score Chris Dennis' HR his 11th; Cody Scarpetta only turns 20 on Monday -- nice... Final: Huntsville 4, Carolina (Marlins) 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Stars Take First From Mudcats Huntsville Hurlers Handcuff Carolina By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Jeremy Jeffress worked 5 2/3 strong innings and teamed with the bullpen to make early offense stand up in Huntsville's 4-1 win over Carolina in the opener of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium Saturday night. The Stars snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 28-33 in the second half, while the Mudcats fell to 37-24 but saw their magic number to clinch the second half North Division title reduced to four. Chris Coghlan reached on an error with two outs in the first and stole second base but was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Freddy Parejo on an Andy Jenkins single. The Stars scored in the bottom of the inning when Michael Brantley led off with a walk, stole second base and then stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Brad Davis. Brantley has three steals in the last two games after none since June 26. Martin Maldonado's two-run single in the second inning pushed the home team's lead to 3-0 before John Raynor led off the third with a walk, moved to second base on a balk, to third on a ground ball out and scored on a Coghlan fly ball to cut the lead to 3-1. The Stars added the final run in the bottom of the third on a two-out, run-scoring double by Chris Errecart, who knocked in his 43rd run. Jeffress struck out Raynor to end the fourth with two runners on base and was removed after fanning pinch-hitter Grant Psomas with two runners on in the sixth. Omar Aguilar came on and punched out Raynor to end the inning and struck out the side in the seventh. Jeffress improved to 2-0 after allowing six hits, walking three and fanning seven. Aguilar struck out two more in a scoreless eighth and Juan Sandoval recorded a pair of strikeouts in a perfect ninth to nail down his 18th save. Huntsville's three hurlers combined to strike out a season-high 15 in beating the Mudcats for a second time in six games at home and for only a sixth time in 16 games overall. The series continues Sunday afternoon with right-hander Mike Jones taking the mound against Mudcats' right-hander Willie Glen. Coverage begins at 4:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Box Score Jeremy Jeffress 0-for-2 with a K in his first two professional AB's -- oh yeah, but he pitched pretty well -- only one run allowed despite ten baserunners and a balk in 5.2 innings; what a long-term bonus if Omar Aguilar has turned the proverbial AA corner; Stars pitchers struck out 15 Mudcats; with no DH, night off for Angel Salome... Buck Rogers, Stars GM: Stars fans complete record first pitch The Huntsville Stars fans completed a 19-hour World Record First Pitch event sponsored by Cabinet NG tonight with 11,689 Honorary First Pitches thrown. Gates opened at midnight and fans began throwing for the record books one minute later. Stars Manager Don Money threw pitch number 10,715 and the game's umpires were included in the final 25 pitches. Only two of the umps could find the strike zone, but that's no different than any other day in baseball so why worry about it now? The youngest pitcher of the night was six-month old Maddux Welch, son of Stars Pitcher David Welch. Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer came out and helped the cause as well. The final pitch, the ultimate world record throw, was raffled off for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. The Stars surpassed the previous pitch mark of 8,304 held by the the Brevard County Manatees. The baseballs were printed and delivered in a very timely manner by Blue Wave Merchandise Global of Waukegan (contact Ed Trabulsy at 847-785-1355). Ed won't let you down and he'll save you a few bucks on your promo and retail baseballs. A 24-hour day is just another great way to start a home stand, says I. A heartbeat away from a mutiny says the staff. Pass the Mountain Dew and No-Doz. And we'll stick to the program implemented in February: the beatings will continue until morale approves.
