Final: Nashville 9, Round Rock (Astros) 0 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Brad Nelson photo, text follows -- Gulin, Sounds Dominate Express In 9-0 Shutout NASHVILLE - Nashville Sounds starting pitcher Lindsay Gulin didn't need a lot of run support, but he sure got it. The Sounds managed to combine a dominant pitching effort with a breakout offensive performance to beat the Round Rock Express, 9-0, in front of a crowd of 9,414 on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Gulin and reliever Richie Gardner combined to pitch a three-hitter, the first shutout for Nashville since June 5 against Albuquerque. Gulin (7-7) pitched seven shutout innings and struck out eight batters while only giving up two hits to pick up his eighth quality start of the season for the Sounds. Prior to tonight's game, the Nashville offense only managed to score an average of two runs in Gulin's starts, but a pair of three-RBI nights for Brad Nelson and Joe Dillon and multiple-hit efforts from four different Sounds players gave Gulin plenty of cushion to work with. The Sounds got off to a quick start and plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning off a three-run homer to left field by Dillon. The longball was Dillon's fifth of the year and scored Hernan Iribarren (double) and Tony Gwynn (single). The three runs in the first inning gave Nashville a 24-4 edge in first-frame scoring over its last eight matchups against Round Rock. AUDIO: Joe Dillon Three-Run HR Nashville added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Dillon scored on a double from Nelson. The two-bagger was Nelson's team-leading 35th of the season, which ranks him 9th on the Sounds all-time list. Jay Gibbons then singled in the next at-bat to score Nelson and extend the Sounds' lead to five. Nelson's big night continued in the bottom of the fifth inning when he belted a solo home run to right field off Round Rock starter Jack Cassel. The longball was Nelson's 17th of the year and added to his team-leading total of 73 RBIs. Nashville added another run in the inning when Gibbons scored from third base on a groundout from Chris Woodward, who now leads the team with 22 RBIs in August. He also extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games after going 1-for-3 on the night. The runs kept coming for the Sounds in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ozzie Chavez knocked an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Nelson. With the hit, Chavez is now 6-for-his-last-7 with a home run and four RBIs. Cassel (8-5) took the loss for the Express after giving up seven earned runs in just five innings of work. Gardner pitched two innings and only gave up one hit in relief for the Sounds. Callix Crabbe went 0-for-1 and snapped his season-high 10-game hitting streak, which was only the second double-digit streak for the Sounds this season. Vinny Rottino's streak of 24 games is the longest of the season for Nashville. It was a pretty good crowd for a Saturday as more than 9,400 fans saw the Sounds play their final Purity Faith Night and Saturday night game of the season. The teams will close out their five-game series with their ninth consecutive meeting at 6 p.m. on Sunday night at Greer Stadium. Lefty Sam Narron (8-4, 4.83) will man the bump for the Sounds against right-hander Runelvys Hernandez (7-7, 4.81) for the Express. Nashville Box Score Jay Gibbons on base all five times up -- see you in September, Jay -- although if Brad Nelson gets his deserved first big league look, that would place Laynce Nix, Nelson, and Gibbons all as LH bats on the Brewer bench; Hernan Iribarren hitting .324 in his last ten games -- will he add to a crowded Brewer dugout after 9/1? Final: West Virginia 6, Lexington (Astros) 0 Lakewood loses, Power lead at 2.5 games... West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER BLANK LEGENDS The West Virginia Power took advantage of four Lexington errors and received terrific pitching performances from R.J. Seidel and Corey Frerichs as they recorded their fourth shutout of the season with a 6-0 victory over the Legends at Applebee's Park on Saturday night. Eric Farris set the tone as he blasted his second home run of the season on the first pitch of the game. Logan Schafer walked with one out in the third inning and scored on Steffan Wilson's sacrifice fly to give the Power a 2-0 edge. Matt Cline laid down a bunt single to begin the fourth inning and scored West Virginia's third run on Schafer's sacrifice fly. Anderson De La Rosa ripped a two-out single in the top of the fifth inning and Cline drove him in with his third single of the night. Schafer walked with one out in the eighth inning and Wilson knocked him in on a two-out single. The Power plated their final run of the game in the ninth inning when Zelous Wheeler scored on Cline's sacrifice fly. Seidel (9-5) turned in his finest outing of the season. He tossed seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball and fanned five in a winning effort. Jake Leonhardt (4-14) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds. Frerichs tossed two scoreless innings of relief. It was West Virginia's first shutout victory since July 22nd when they blanked the Rome Braves 7-0 at Appalachian Power Park. The Power improved to 73-58 on the year and 41-21 in the second half with the win. The Legends fell to 42-88 on the year and 21-40 in the second half with the loss. Three Power players turned in multi-hit games, including Cline who paced the Power with his three-hit performance. Caleb Gindl and Lee Haydel both extended their hitting streaks to nine games. Eric Fryer reached once on a single to bring his on-base streak to 32 games. The Power will continue the four-game series against Lexington Sunday night. The Power will start right hander Wily Peralta (0-0, 0.00) and the Legends will counter with right hander Leandro Cespedes (2-6, 4.18). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM (5:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score Astros' low-A club at 42-88, yikes (.323 winning percentage); Matt Cline on base all four times up; Eric Farris 31-of-39 in steals, but OBP at .322, only 23 walks in 419 AB's, needs to at least double that walk rate; in addition to his batting title and .929 OPS, Eric Fryer is 15-of-18 on the basepaths, who had noticed that? LaCrosse's R.J. Seidel pitched 41 innings at Helena last season, he's taken the ball each time out in '08 to the tune of 116.1 innings and counting -- awesome job here, kid, in front of nearly 8,000 Lexington fans... West Virginia Game Log No multiple run innings, six one-run frames; catcher Anderson De La Rosa picked off a runner off first to end the 5th...

Helena Pre-Game Audio Interview with Outfielder Cutter Dykstra Click on the KCAP archive of August 22nd, then browse to the 13:45 minute mark; still learning the outfield position, but loving it; discusses recent ejection from game... Final: Billings (Reds) 5, Helena 0 Helena Independent Record: Brewers strand nine in shutout loss The Pioneer League baseball playoffs continued to slip away from the Helena Brewers as they lost 5-0 to Billings Friday at Dehler Park. The Mustangs tagged Helena starter Nick Tyson for all five runs in his four-plus innings and had a trio of pitchers combine to record 13 strikeouts. Tyson dropped to 1-3 on the season, while Billings starter Oscar Castro improved to 3-2. Helena got a pair of hits from infielder David Fonseca and Brock Kjeldgaard hit his 23rd double of the season, but the Brewers stranded nine runners on base. Designated hitter Derrick Alfonso struck out four times. Helena reliever Rico Salmon took over for Tyson in the fifth inning and struck out five batters in three innings. Adam Arnold pitched a scoreless eighth. The Brewers dropped to 7-17 in the second half, while Billings improved to 13-9. The one bit of good news Friday involved Missoula scoring a pair of runs in the 10th inning to beat Great Falls 4-2. The Great Falls loss, combined with the Billings victory, kept the Mustangs in a first place in the Northern Division. If Billings, the division winner in the first half of the season, wins the title in the second half, the team with the second best overall record would qualify for the playoffs. Helena trails Great Falls by four games in the overall standings with the teams meeting four straight games beginning Sunday in Great Falls. The Brewers return to Kindrick Legion Field Tuesday. Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 3, Huntsville 2 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Dramatic Win For Barons in Ninth Stars Drop Fourth In a Row In a Heartbreaker By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Brandon Allen belted a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift Birmingham to a 3-2 comeback victory over Huntsville Friday night in the last of a five-game set at Regions Park. The Barons improved to 31-28 in the second half with their second walk-off win of the set, while the Stars fell to 27-33 in the second half and 68-62 overall. The Barons won 10 of the 14 games to claim the season series and have won the season series from the Stars in 12 of the last 14 campaigns. David Johnson retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the ninth before Allen drilled a 1-0 offering over the wall in right-center field for his 10th home run with the Barons and 25th overall on the season. He hit a home run in each of the last three games and handed Johnson his first loss since May 15 at home against Carolina. Johnson, who also gave up the tying run in the eighth inning, had allowed only two runs in his last 34 2/3 innings over 21 appearances. Michael Brantley opened the game by reaching on a throwing error by first baseman Freddie Thon and came into score when Alcides Escobar followed with a triple into the right field corner. Mat Gamel drove in Escobar with a ground ball out to make it 2-0 and knock in his league-best 96th run. Barons' starter Lucas Harrell was taken out with runners at first and second in the seventh and replaced by Joe Torres, who retired Brantley on a shallow fly ball before Escobar legged out an infield hit to load the bases. Gamel then flied out to the warning track in right field to end the frame. Harrell allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out three in his ninth start with Birmingham. Kanekoa Texeira tossed two scoreless innings to grab the win and improve to 3-2. Alex Periard blanked the Barons on two singles and allowed only one runner to reach second base through six innings. Lee Cruz was hit by a pitch to open the seventh, moved to second base on a Javier Castillo single and reached third on a fielder's choice grounder by Allen that chased Periard from the game. Johnson took over and got Thon to bounce into a force out at second that plated Cruz with the home team's first run. Periard was charged with that lone run on three hits, while walking one and fanning four in his longest outing with the Stars. Erick San Pedro led off the eighth inning with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Stefan Gartrell, who moved to second base on a ground ball out, to third on a deep fly out and scored to tie the game on a passed ball by Martin Maldonado. The Stars return home Saturday to begin a five-game series with Carolina with right-hander Jeremy Jeffress taking the hill Mudcats' southpaw Aaron Thompson. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Box Score It just doesn't matter who the Stars place on the mound at the end of games this season, it seems; fantastic bounceback outing for Alex Periard... Huntsville Game Log -

Nashville Pre-Game Audio Coaches Chat with Manager Frank Kremblas Discussion includes reliever Joe Bateman, Brad Nelson... Final: Round Rock (Astros) 5, Nashville 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for new Ozzie Chavez photo, text follows -- NASHVILLE - The Round Rock Express jumped out to an early five-run lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Friday evening in front of 6,083 fans at Greer Stadium. The Express took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Troy Cate on Danny Klassen's two-out RBI double to right that scored J.R. Towles. Round Rock increased its advantage to 5-0 in the second. Chris Johnson and Yordany Ramirez opened the inning with back-to-back triples before Express pitcher Josh Muecke helped his own cause with a bloop RBI single to shallow center. A walk to Towles and a Mark Saccomanno single loaded the bases before Cate walked in a run by issuing a two-out free pass to Klassen, the 22nd bases-loaded walk issued by Nashville pitching in 2008. The Express added their fourth run of the frame when Towles scampered home from third on a Cate wild pitch. The Sounds got on the board in the second inning when Vinny Rottino was hit by a Muecke pitch to start the frame and later scored on a Carlos Corporan sacrifice fly to make it a 5-1 contest. Nashville added a second run in the fourth. Shortstop Adam Heether, who went 2-for-4 on the evening to extend his longest hit streak of the season to eight games, led off with a double and moved to third on a Chris Woodward single before scoring on Ozzie Chavez's RBI single to center. Woodward's knock in the frame extended the veteran infielder's hitting streak to seven games, matching his longest of the year. Chavez, who paced all batters with a 4-for-4 evening, pulled the Sounds within a run at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when he belted his third home run of the year, a one-out, two-run shot off Muecke that also scored Woodward. AUDIO: Ozzie Chavez Two-Run HR The Sounds missed an opportunity to tie the game in the home half of the seventh after Tony Gwynn reached third with only one out. After Muecke walked Joe Dillon to put runners on the corners, right-hander Nick Regilio took over on the Round Rock hill and induced a first-pitch, inning-ending double play grounder from Rottino to squelch the threat. Callix Crabbe singled off veteran reliever and former Milwaukee Brewer Ray King in the ninth inning for Nashville to extend the club's longest active hitting streak to 10 games, just the second double-digit hit streak by a Sounds player all season. Muecke (8-11) picked up the win for the Express after allowing four runs on nine hits and fanning five batters over 6 1/3 innings of work. King worked a scoreless ninth for Round Rock to notch his fifth save of the year. Cate (2-3) took the loss after he allowed five runs on seven hits in his four innings of work for the Sounds. The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday evening. Left-hander Lindsay Gulin (6-7, 3.84) will toe the rubber for Nashville and face Round Rock right-hander Jack Cassel (8-4, 3.40). Nashville Box Score Adam Heether and his .828 OPS with two more hits, you have to figure he'll see at least some big league time in '09 if he continues to show he's capable at shortstop as well as second and third... Asheville took an early lead in the top of the first. Lars Davis and Kevin Clark ripped back-to-back one-out singles and Darin Holcomb reached on a fielder's choice to score Davis. Logan Schafer belted a two-out single in the third to score Matt Cline, tying the game at 1-1. The Power took their first lead of the series one inning later when Gindl scored on Holcomb's fielding error. Asheville plated three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead again. David Christensen began the inning with a double and scored on Warren Schaeffer's two-bagger. Holcomb's two-out base hit scored Schaeffer to give Asheville the lead and Clark scored the final run of the inning on Eric Farris's fielding error. Eric Fryer and Steffan Wilson started the sixth inning on back-to-back singles before Gindl ripped a three-run homer to put the Power on top for good, giving him a home run in every game of the series. Cory Riordan (8-9) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits over seven innings. The Power improved to 72-58 on the year and 40-21 in the second half with the win. The Tourists fell to 80-51 on the year and 33-28 in the second half with the loss. Gindl's three-hit performance extended his hitting streak to eight games. He was the only Power player with a multi-hit game. He has scored a run in eight straight games and he has knocked in at least one run over his last five. Eric Fryer reached once on a single to bring his on-base streak to 31 games. West Virginia gained a game on the Lakewood BlueClaws, who were defeated by Lake County on Matt McBride's walk-off three-run homer in the ninth inning. The Power will begin a four game series against the Lexington Legends at Applebee's Park on Saturday night. The Power will start right hander R.J. Seidel (8-5, 4.94). Garrison shut down: Starter Steve Garrison will miss the rest of the season is because of a strained rotator cuff. He finishes the year with a 7-7 record and 3.82 ERA. "(Garrison) has had shoulder discomfort," Missions manager Bill Masse said. "He's a young kid, so rather than take a chance with a 21-year-old kid, the Padres decided to shut him down."
