Final, Game Two: Huntsville 11, Chattanooga (Reds) 6 Huntsville Site Doubleheader Summary: Big Innings Lead Stars to DH Sweep A three-run third inning in game one, a four-run fourth and a five-run sixth in game two lead the Stars to their second doubleheader sweep of the year. Starter Jeremy Jeffress, making his Double-A debut, lasted only 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Chattanooga's Justin Turner hit his seventh home run of the year in the first inning and drove in Chris Denove in the third to account for each of the Lookouts' runs off Jeffress. After Jeffress walked the bases loaded and allowed Turner's single he was replaced by Patrick Ryan, who would shut the door and pitch 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win. In the bottom half of the third, the Stars, trailing 2-1 would answer with three of their own and take the lead for good. Cole Gillespie doubled in Angel Salome and Mat Gamel, who had each reached on walks. Chris Errecart capped the inning by driving in Gillespie from second with a two-out single. The Stars would add another run in the fourth as Salome drove in Michael Brantley with a single. David Johnson pitched a scoreless sixth, and Juan Sandoval closed out the seventh, allowing only one run, to earn his sixteenth save of the year as the Stars won 5-3. The Stars would wait a little later for their big inning in game two. Trailing 3-2, the Stars plated four in the fourth inning to take the lead 6-3. Alcides Escobar drove in Guilder Rodriguez and Brantley with a bases-loaded double. Escobar's double pushed Lorenzo Cain to third, where he scored thanks to a Salome sacrifice fly. Gamel then drove in Escobar with a single to left. That lead wasn't safe for long, however, as Tonys Gutierrez hit a three-run home run off reliever Donovan Hand to tie the contest at six. The Stars would answer in the sixth with five runs to secure the doubleheader sweep. Gamel delivered a clutch bases-clearing double to drive in Cain, Escobar and Salome. Gillespie and pinch-hitter Freddy Parejo would each chip in with RBI singles to give the Stars the 11-6 advantage. Robert Hinton pitched a perfect seventh, and Hand earned his second win of the year, in relief. The two teams will be back in action tomorrow as Brae Wright (6-9, 3.40) will get the start for Huntsville opposite Chattanooga's Sam LeCure (9-6, 3.67). Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Game Two Box Score Poor start for Mike Jones, who walked five in three innings; Mat Gamel drove in four with a double and single; Cole Gillespie singled three times and drove in two; Guilder Rodriguez earns a mention, reaching three times; Lorenzo Cain three singles; Michael Brantley reached three times; Angel Salome doubled and had a sacrifice fly -- so yes, it was a productive offensive effort over just six innings at-bat... Final: Helena 10, Ogden (Dodgers) 4 Nice series win, cruising to victories in the final three of four against a good team on the road... Helena Box Score As noted above, Erik Komatsu with two three-run home runs; Steven Braun hit his first professional home run in a pinch-hit appearance late; Cutter Dykstra singled twice, walked twice, reached all four times up; Brock Kjeldgaard 4-for-5, surprisingly all singles, as 31-of-57 previous hits went for extra bases for the slugger; John Delaney a huge game in the leadoff spot, reaching four times and scoring four runs; two doubles for David Fonseca; fantastic scoreless six-inning start for LHP Brandon Ritchie; things got a touch hairy in the 9th, well, not really, but Brandon Rapoza bailed out Nestor Corredor big-time to end it... Helena Game Log Ogden starter Robert Boothe is unique -- he has a Japanese interpreter with him, he was born to an American father and Japanese mother, raised in Japan and educated at Asia University in Tokyo...

Final: Palm Beach (Cardinals) 4, Brevard County 3, 11 innings Walk-off loss... Brevard County Box Score Josh Wahpepah only faced one batter all game -- leadoff walk-off home run for the Cardinals in the 11th; Charlie Fermaint (.203) and Andy Bouchie (.201) fighting to stay over the Mendoza line; Lou Palmisano three singles; Taylor Green a night off -- perhaps per request of the Cleveland Indians -- announcement forthcoming? Don't overlook the wondrous line of starting LHP Bobby Bramhall in this one, check it out -- in his last 27 innings, Bramhall has walked only one while striking out 24... Brevard County Game Log Manatee 6th inning crucial in a bad way -- 2nd and 3rd, no outs, no runs; mild two-out threat in the 10th, but that was about it...

Final: Augusta (Giants) 4, West Virginia 2 Power fall into a first-place division tie... West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER DROP THIRD IN A ROW The West Virginia Power fell behind the Augusta GreenJackets early on Wednesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium and were never able to recover as the GreenJackets sent the Power to their third straight loss with a 4-2 victory. The GreenJackets took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning for the second night in a row. Juan Ciriaco ripped a two-out single, stole second base and scored on Dayton Buller's base hit. Ciriaco singled into left-center field with Shane Jordan on base in the fifth inning. Logan Schafer misplayed the ball in left-center field allowing Jordan to score. The Power cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth inning on Steffan Wilson's two-out base hit that scored Eric Farris. Angel Villalona started the sixth inning with a base hit and scored on a triple from Andrew Davis. Augusta took a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning on Ciriaco's third base hit of the night which scored Jordan again. The Power plated their final run of the game in the eighth inning when Farris scored on Wilson's groundout. T.J. Brewer (8-4) allowed a run on four hits over five and two-thirds and fanned six to earn the victory. R.J. Seidel (7-5) tossed five strong innings, allowing two runs, only one earned on six hits with four strikeouts, but was tagged with the loss. The Power fell to 66-55 on the year and 34-18 in the second half with the loss. The GreenJackets improved to 75-45 on the year and 34-17 in the second half with the win. Farris and Eric Fryer paced the Power with two hits apiece. Eric Rindal singled in the second inning, bringing his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 17 games. The three-game losing skid is West Virginia's longest since they were swept in a four-game series against Lakewood on Memorial Day weekend. The Power will finish the four-game series against Augusta Thursday night. The Power will right hander Michael Bowman (2-1, 4.50) and the GreenJackets will counter with right hander Oliver Odle (9-5, 3.99). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score San Francisco's pitching staff could be something in three years -- Augusta has led the league in ERA all season (now at 3.11, West Virginia's is 4.22)... Link while active, text follows: Ungs well-armed for strong finish Pitcher works way back to Triple-A By Jim Leitner, Dubuque (IA) Telegraph Herald sports editor Nic Ungs' six-week stint on the disabled list earlier this summer evolved into a crash course in kinesiology and just might have put him on a firmer path to the big leagues. The Milwaukee Brewers promoted the 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-hander to Triple-A Nashville last week after a stellar month-long rehabilitation assignment in Double-A Huntsville. On Monday night, Ungs made his first appearance with the Sounds since April 24 and pitched 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball in a 3-2 home victory over Omaha. He did not factor in the decision. "The most important thing for me right now is being healthy," said Ungs, who lost his mother, Jane, to cancer this summer. "I have my feel for pitching back, and I have my competitiveness back. It's nice to be back where I have to be to be able to compete at this level. "I really haven't felt this strong, probably, since the fall of 2005. Since then, I haven't had the consistent pop on my fastball, my arm strength gradually went down, and I didn't have the stamina I used to. It was very frustrating." The 28-year-old Dyersville, Iowa, native opened the year with the Sounds and went 1-2 with a 10.86 ERA in four starts before being placed on the disabled list at the end of April due to a right shoulder injury. The injury resulted from an imbalance in strength between the front and back of his shoulder capsule. In recent seasons, Ungs suffered from a sore forearm. "The biggest thing I've learned through all of this is how everything is connected," Ungs said. "My forearm overcompensated for my shoulder problem, so that's where I felt it the most. "I have to look at this experience as a blessing. I could have blown out an elbow, and I might have been done. But instead of having to go through a surgery, I was able to fix things by changing my program. I have a routine, and I know the proper way to do everything." Nashville pitching coach Stan Kyles understands how a pitcher develops an injury like the one Ungs encountered. But, without knowing Ungs' weight program, he couldn't comment specifically on him. Ungs spent the first seven seasons of his professional career in the Florida Marlins organization. He signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Brewers in January. "During the season, you might feel a little tired in one specific area, so you isolate that area in your weight training during the offseason instead of building up strength in everything in the surrounding area," Kyles said. "All of the sudden, you have that imbalance. "I think Nic learned a lot about himself, physically, this year. So, going into the offseason, he's going to have a much better idea of what's going on in his shoulder capsule and how it should be properly taken care of." After six weeks on the disabled list, the Brewers assigned him to Double-A Huntsville. He went 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 46 innings in the Southern League and rebuilt his confidence. He also regained full range of motion in his shoulder, which helped his change-up and enabled him to consistently throw his fastball at 88 mph throughout games. On Monday, he allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six. He left with the score tied, 2-2, and watched the Sounds score a single run in the eighth for the victory. "He was a totally different pitcher from what we saw of him the last time he was here," Kyles said. "Coming out of spring training, he was a little tentative, because he wasn't quite right, physically. "He had a lot more conviction on his pitches and in his effort (Monday) night, and he was able to execute his pitches. The ball came out of his hand so much better, and he looked a lot more confident on the mound. He showed a lot of the stuff that led to us signing him." Ungs will likely have four more starts this season to convince the Brewers to re-sign him. "It's not how you start the season, it's how you finish," Ungs said. "There's a huge difference between the beginning of the season and right now. When I'm healthy and feeling good, this is what I'm capable of doing. "I just want to stick with my game plan and try to win some ballgames here. The great thing is, my arm isn't holding me back at all." http://www.thonline.biz/article_photos/details/Ungs_action0.jpg Photo Contributed By: Mike Strasinger http://www.thonline.biz/article_photos/details/Ungs_mug0.jpg

Final: Oklahoma (Rangers) 4, Nashville 2 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Joe Dillon photo, text follows -- NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds lost a second consecutive, low-scoring battle against the Oklahoma RedHawks, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium. Oklahoma starting pitcher Elizardo Ramirez (10-5) came within one pitch of his first complete game of the season, tossing 8 2/3 innings while giving up only two runs on seven hits. The outing was his longest of the season, and the low-scoring output marked the 46th time this season that the Sounds have been held to two runs or less. Joe Dillon went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI as the lone highlight for a Nashville offense that has only produced two runs on 12 hits in the past two games. Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin (5-7) picked up his sixth quality start of the season for Nashville after giving up only three runs in seven innings of work. He only allowed six hits while striking out seven batters but picked up his seventh loss of the season. In his 20 starts this season, the Sounds have only managed to score 34 total runs of support. The Sounds got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Callix Crabbe scored from third base on an RBI groundout from Brad Nelson. Crabbe led the inning off with his fifth consecutive base on balls after walking four times in four at-bats in Monday night's game. Dillon then knocked a double to move him to third before he scored on the groundball. Oklahoma jumped ahead in the next half inning when Ryan Roberts belted a 2-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left field. The longball was Roberts's ninth of the year and scored Nate Gold, who walked in the previous at-bat. The RedHawks added another run in the top of the fourth inning off a pair of doubles from Roberts and Ben Harrison off Gulin to push the lead to two. Nashville cut the lead to one when Dillon notched his second double of the day down the left field line to score Crabbe from second base in the bottom of the sixth inning. Crabbe reached on a single then moved to second on a fielding error by Oklahoma right fielder Harrison. The RedHawks manufactured another run in the top of the eighth inning off Sounds reliever Tim Dillard when Joaquin Arias led off with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Meyer. Gold then singled up the middle to center field to score Arias and give Oklahoma a two-run cushion. Dillard pitched two innings of relief and gave up one earned run for the Sounds while striking out two batters. Joselo Diaz picked up his first save of the season for the RedHawks after recording the last out in the ninth inning. The teams continue the series on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Greer Stadium. Southpaw Sam Narron (7-3, 4.79) will man the bump for the Sounds against right-hander Brian Gordon (3-4, 5.24) for the RedHawks. Greer Stadium will host another Thirsty Thursday during tomorrow night's game, with $1 draft beverages until the fifth inning or 8:30, whichever comes first. Nashville Box Score It's a bit surprising only six of Lindsay Gulin's 20 starts have been of the "quality" variety, but high walk totals have limited his innings in games he's otherwise thrown well; Brad Nelson a .582 OPS in 11 August games thus far... Nashville Site: Outfielder Laynce Nix had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers this morning and will join the club in San Diego for its game there later this evening. The 27-year-old has spent the entire 2008 season with the Sounds and hit .284 (108-for-380) with 23 home runs, 22 doubles, and 60 RBIs. Nix has been especially hot at the plate recently, batting .364 (28-for-77) with 15 extra-base hits (6 HR, 7 2B, 2 3B) in his most recent 20 games. He hit safely in 17 of those 20 contests and is currently tied for 10th among Pacific Coast League sluggers with his team-leading 23 home runs this season. In 260 previous Major League games over his nine-year pro career, Nix has batted .236 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. Nix's addition was necessary when the Brewers placed former Sounds infielder Russell Branyan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 12, with a right oblique strain. Nix filled the last open spot on Milwaukee's 40-man roster. Infielder Ozzie Chavez was reinstated from the temporary inactive list to fill Nix's spot on the Sounds' roster. In another transaction on Wednesday morning, pitcher Mark DiFelice was placed on the disabled list due to the back injury that forced him to leave his Tuesday start early. Reliever Luis Pena was activated from the D.L. to fill the open roster spot.

Final, Game One: Huntsville 5, Chattanooga (Reds) 3 Huntsville Game One Box Score All the details from the Stars' site after completion of the doubleheader; for now, we can tell you that Jeremy Jeffress worked 2.1 innings in his AA debut (two runs allowed), allowing a home run in the first inning, tossing a 1-2-3 second, and then running into control problems in the third that forced his exit. The Brewers enforce not only a game-long pitch count, but a per-inning pitch count, which Jeffress likely exceeded. Patrick Ryan came on and worked out of a huge bases-loaded, one-out jam to save Jeffress' ERA and also set himself up for the eventual Stars' win. The amazing Angel Salome singled twice and walked twice, reaching all four plate appearances in this seven-inning affair. Michael Brantley, Alcides Escobar and Chris Errecart had big games. Somehow, Manager Don Money was ejected in the first inning (following an Escobar walk). Again, more details from Brett Pollock later tonight. Indians recall LHP Jackson to fill in for Byrd PA SportsTicker While the Cleveland Indians continue to trudge through a rebuilding process, they are giving their prospects a chance to compete at the major league level. The Indians recalled lefthander Zach Jackson from Class AAA Buffalo on Wednesday to take the spot in the rotation vacated by Paul Byrd, who was traded to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday upon clearing waivers. Jackson, who was one of four players acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on July 7 in exchange for CC Sabathia, will start Thursday in the finale of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. General manager Mark Shapiro said Tuesday that whoever was called up to replace Byrd in the rotation would likely be with the club for the remainder of the season. Considered a throw-in part of the deal that sent Sabathia packing, Jackson has been solid over the past five weeks with the Bisons and was added to their starting rotation July 21. In eight appearances (four starts), the 25-year-old is 3-1 with a 4.05 ERA. He has struck out 20 while walking just five batters over 26 2/3 innings. Those numbers have dwarfed what he put up earlier in the season at Class AAA Nashville, where he was 1-5 with a 7.85 ERA in 22 appearances (eight starts). He was briefly recalled in May and made two appearances with the Brewers. Jackson owns a major league lifetime record of 2-2 with a 5.36 ERA in 10 appearances, seven of which were starts.

Helena Pre-Game Audio Interview with Manager Rene Gonzales Click on the KCAP archive of August 12th, then browse to the 11:45 minute mark; interesting note about Nick Tyson battling against left-handed hitters Monday night; very detailed Cutter Dykstra discussion as well; shortstop Michael Marseco's absence (head injury) has coincided with recent Brewer troubles; Erik Miller, Brock Kjeldgaard, certainly a worthwhile listen... Final: Helena 9, Ogden (Dodgers) 4 Helena Independent Record: The Helena Brewers broke out of the gate with four runs in the first inning, and then went on to post a 9-4 win over the Ogden Raptors in Utah Monday. Brewer leadoff hitter John Delaney opened the contest with a single, followed by a Miguel Vasquez single, back-to-back doubles by Erik Komatsu and Brock Kjeldgaard, and a single by Jose Duran. Delaney belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and Kjeldgaard laced a two-run dinger in the seventh, his 11th of the season. Kjeldgaard finished at 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. The big first baseman now has now produced 44 RBIs in 52 games. Delaney went 3-for-5, while Vasquez was 2-for-4. Cody Scarpetta, Daniel Meadows and Mark Willinsky split the pitching duties for the Capital City group. Meadows earned the win, working the fourth through seventh innings. He did not permit a hit or a run. Scarpetta started on the bump, going four frames and giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters. The Brewers improved to 5-10 in the second half. They close out their four-game series with the Raptors Wednesday night. Helena Box Score Brewer pitchers strike out 13, walk three, hit three... Link while active, text follows: Redhawks beat Sounds with hit in 10th inning By STEVE SILVER Tennessean Staff Writer The Sounds' extra-inning problems continued Tuesday night as the Oklahoma Redhawks escaped Greer Stadium with a 1-0 victory in 10 innings. The Sounds are now 0-6 in extra-inning games at home. The Sounds held the Redhawks to five hits through nine innings, and Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas decided to call in reliever Randy Choate in the 10th. Entering Tuesday's game, Choate had allowed 10 earned runs and 15 hits in his last 7 2/3 innings. "He's a groundball pitcher and really it could have been anybody," Kremblas said. "(Troy) Cate wasn't ready, (Joe) Bateman threw the other day and we decided to go with Choate because they had some lefties coming up too." That decision proved costly as Choate walked the first batter he faced and committed an error to allow that runner to advance to third. Pinch-hitter Joaquin Arias singled to right field to drive in the game-winning run. Lopsided rivalry: The loss drops the Sounds' record against the Redhawks to 1-12 this season. The last time Nashville lost 13 games to the same opponent in the same season was in 2001 when they finished 3-13 against the New Orleans Zephyrs. Errant fielding: Choate's wild throw past second base in the 10th inning marks the sixth straight game in which a Sounds' fielder has committed an error. Nix rolling: Outfielder Laynce Nix, who doubled in the seventh inning, is now batting .364 (28-for-77) with 15 extra-base hits in his past 20 games. He has hit safely in 17 of those.

Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Mark DiFelice photo, text follows -- NASHVILLE - The Oklahoma RedHawks plated an unearned run in the top of the tenth inning to hang a hard-luck 1-0 loss on the Nashville Sounds in front of 6,722 fans on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. The contest was the 14th extra-inning game of the year for Nashville, which fell to 0-6 in extras at Greer Stadium, and the Sounds' first 1-0 game since defeating Oklahoma 50 weeks ago to the day in Music City on August 26, 2007. The RedHawks snapped a season-high six-game skid with the victory. Ryan Roberts opened the tenth by drawing a walk from Sounds reliever Randy Choate then advanced to third when the Nashville hurler misfired into center field while trying to force him at second on a John Mayberry bunt. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Joaquin Arias grounded an RBI single through the right side of the infield to plate Roberts with the eventual game-winning run in unearned fashion. RedHawks reliever Bill White retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the tenth to notch his fourth save of the year. Yukinaga Maeda (5-3) earned the win for Oklahoma after he pushed the game to extra frames with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Choate (0-3) took a loss for the second straight outing for Nashville after surrendering the game-winning run in unearned fashion in his lone inning of work. The teams engaged in scoreless baseball over the first nine innings of play. Sounds starter Mark DiFelice was dealing, recording 11 strikeouts through 5 1/3 scoreless innings, before departing in the middle of an at-bat due to a back injury. The 11 strikeouts match a career high for the right-hander (4th occurrence, 2nd this season). With the outing, he lowered his ERA to 3.32 through 12 starts. Right-fielder Laynce Nix provided solid defense behind the right-hander in the early going, making a diving catch of a Mayberry fly ball in shallow right to end the second then throwing out Casey Benjamin at second in the third inning when he attempted to extend a single to a double. Richie Gardner took over on the hill for Nashville after DiFelice's departure and worked 3 2/3 scoreless frames, allowing two hits. Oklahoma starter Brandon McCarthy engaged the Sounds hurlers in a pitchers' duel, allowing one hit over six scoreless frames while striking out four before yielding to Kiko Calero, who added 1 2/3 scoreless innings of his own. The Sounds had their best chance to score in the seventh. After registering only one hit over the first six frames, Brad Nelson singled and Nix followed with a double to put runners on second and third with only one out. However, Calero induced consecutive flyouts from Adam Heether and Chris Woodward to escape the jam unscathed. Center-fielder Tony Gwynn went 2-for-4 to account for half of Nashville's hits on the evening. The teams continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon at Greer. Left-hander Lindsay Gulin (5-6, 3.96) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Oklahoma right-hander Elizardo Ramirez (9-5, 4.41). Nashville Box Score Too bad about DiFelice -- hopefully OK for a September call-up; where was this version of Richie Gardner as a starter? Tony Gwynn 17-of-21 in stolen base attempts... Final: Augusta (Giants) 2, West Virginia 1, 11 innings Rival Lakewood (Phillies) won, so the division lead shrinks to one game... West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER FALL IN 11 TO AUGUSTA Nick Noonan's walk off home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning pushed the Augusta GreenJackets past the West Virginia Power as Augusta snagged the second game of the series with a 2-1 victory. The GreenJackets took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shane Jordan walked and stole second base before Juan Ciriaco knocked him in with a one-out single. West Virginia was held without a run through the first 15 innings of the series until Lee Haydel's two-out single into center field scored Zelous Wheeler in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams had chances to score after Haydel tied it up. West Virginia stranded two in the seventh after Haydel's base hit and did the same in the eighth inning. The Power had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth before Ryan Paul struck out Matt Cline and Eric Farris to end the inning. Farris was eventually ejected by home plate umpire Bryan Dormaier when he slammed his helmet after the strikeout. Dom Duggan ripped a one-out double in the eighth inning and eventually got to third base but was left stranded after Mike Ramlow struck out Noonan to end the inning. Andrew Davis started the tenth inning with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and got to third base on James Simmons's groundout but was left stranded as Shane Jordan grounded out to end the inning. On the second pitch of the eleventh inning, Noonan homered off Corey Frerichs to end the game. Mitch Lively (1-0) pitched a scoreless eleventh inning to earn the victory. Frerichs (5-8) was tagged with the loss. Lucas Luetge allowed just a run on three hits and fanned five over six frames. Ramlow tossed four scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief. Noonan's home run brought the Power bullpen's scoreless innings streak to an end at 33 and two-thirds. The Power fell to 66-54 on the year and 34-17 in the second half with the loss. The GreenJackets improved to 74-45 on the year and 33-17 in the second half with the win. Haydel turned in the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-5. Curt Rindal singled and walked, bringing his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 16 games. West Virginia's record in extra innings fell to 5-6. Final: Brevard County 6, Vero Beach 3, 13 innings Brevard County Site Game Summary: Brewer Blasts Manatees Past Devil Rays By Tyler Stover / Brevard County Manatees (Viera, FL) Brent Brewer crushed a three-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the 13th inning to give Brevard County a come-from-behind win over Vero Beach, 6-3. The Manatee offense was shut down most of the day, as Devil Rays starter Wade Townsend teamed up with relievers Chris Kelly and Darin Downs to limit the Manatees to just one run in the first eight innings. Manatees' starter Chris Cody was also effective, working out of some tough jams to allow just two runs in six innings. Mike Wlodarczyk entered the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead, but was unable to close things down for the save. Taylor Green led off the inning with a single, followed by Lou Palmisano's groundout and another single from Chuck Caufield. Brewer struck out for the second out of the inning, but Kenny Holmberg drew a walk to keep the rally alive. Yohannis Perez came through with a clutch single to center field, scoring two runs to tie the game at 3-3 as the teams headed to extra innings. The Manatees' Rafael Lluberes and the Devil Rays' Ryan Owen took turns putting zeroes on the board for three innings, until Lluberes gave way to Mike McClendon. McClendon (6-5) pitched a scoreless 13th inning, and Owen ran out of gas in the bottom half of the inning. After getting one out, Owen hit Green with a pitch, and then allowed a single to Palmisano. Caufield flew out for the second out, bringing Brewer to the plate. Brewer got the pitch he was looking for, and smashed it over the wall to send the Scout Night crowd of 1,054 home happy. Brevard County heads to Palm Beach to begin a three-game set on Wednesday. The Manatees are now just five games out of first place, and will be looking to gain even more ground during this series. Bobby Bramhall (3-4, 2.69) will start the series opener for the Manatees, taking on Nicholas Additon, who is making his Cardinals debut. He was 9-5 with a 2.50 ERA in 19 starts for the Quad Cities River Bandits this season. Game time is 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). Brevard County's next home series begins Saturday, as they face the St. Lucie Mets in a doubleheader. Brevard County Box Score Five relievers combine for seven innings, allowing only one unearned run (Zach Braddock's own error); Brent Brewer hit 11 home runs last season, so his drought this year was not expected; Taylor Green on base four more times... Brevard County Game Log Scott Houin pinch-ran for Kenny Holmberg in the bottom of the 9th in an odd spot (first base, bases loaded, down one run) -- that set off a position switcheroonie that saw Taylor Green move to first base, Yohannis Perez to third, and yes, Mel Stocker to second base -- Stocker then handled several plays in the field over the next four innings, as you'll be able to review here... Brent Brewer's first home run came at the perfect time for Brevard County. (MiLB.com Photo by Tyler Stover) http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2008/08/13/VtWRnUs7.jpg
