Buehrle - Latest: 4-year extension
Jim Goulart replied to Tedaldtada's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I believe Inman will be a chip that is traded to shore up part of this team around the trade deadline. My guess is for another arm in the pen. People need to realize that Inman is on the same exact track as Yovani Gallardo -- a split-season in A+ / AA and then in Nashville to begin 2008. The same way we're talking about Gallardo now, we'll be talking about Inman at this time next year. And people want to use him to obtain bullpen help for two months? Take any other pitcher you want to throw in the mix -- there's Gallardo / Inman, then Parra, then a wide chasm that will allow for such trade discussion. -
I'm not closing this thread or anything, but as a general rule we don't like to see discussions of possible releases take place on the minor league front, whether it's a 30+ year-old AAAA veteran, or a kid who's seemingly overmatched at the lower levels. Sure, we often discuss who is underperforming and such, but when it comes to whether there should be a spot in the organization for a particular player, we're not going to promote discussion in that specific manner. Our rule has basically said that we can take the kid gloves off on a player in that regard once they're on the 40-man.

Your 2007 WV Power: Latest -- Steve Chapman Video
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/story/S...easy-task/ SAL All-Star voting is no easy task Jacob Messer Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter They say two heads are better than one. That certainly was the case 10 days ago when I cast my ballot for the South Atlantic League All-Star Team as the West Virginia Power media representative. An easy assignment, right? Think again. The ballot requires the voter to pick a manager, pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, right fielder, center fielder, left fielder, designated hitter, utility infielders (two), utility outfielders (two) and trainer for the Northern and Southern divisions' teams. It had a blank for everything but vendor -- and it's too bad that wasn't a category, by the way, because the Appalachian Power Park kid with the trademark chant of "Peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jacks heeere" is a no-doubt-about-it, first-team selection. Ballots were due May 26 (and the league is expected to announce the team rosters this week, according to SAL President John Henry Moss). At that time, I had seen six of the eight Northern Division teams compared to one of the eight Southern Division clubs. No one in Charleston has seen more SAL baseball than Power media relations director Andy Barch, who is the play-by-play man for all of West Virginia's games. Although he had seen all eight Northern Division teams, even he had seen only two Southern Division clubs before he submitted his ballot. Tag-teaming the ballot, we decided, was the only way to attack it. Selecting the Northern Division team was easy; picking the Southern Division squad wasn't. The reason, of course, was our limited knowledge. Relying largely on statistics, along with a couple of recommendations Barch had received from his broadcast buddies in the South, we picked the best team possible for the Southern Division considering we hadn't seen more than half of its teams. Barch said other voters, including managers, had the same problem. "I have heard it every year," Barch said. "When it comes to the Southern Division, guys are like, ?Who do I pick here?' They like to vote for players they have seen before. But there are so many players they haven't seen. That's what makes it tough for them." That is why Moss, who will retire at the end of the year, or his successor, needs to change the voting process. And here is a simple solution: Let Northern Division managers, coaches, executives, media members and fans votes for the Northern Division rosters and let Southern Division managers, coaches, executives, media members and fans votes for the Southern Division rosters. "We have seen Greensboro enough to know that Chris Coghlan is a heck of a second baseman," Barch said. "We have seen Lexington enough to know that James Van Ostrand is a good outfielder and great hitter. "We know that because we have seen that. "But there are a lot of guys we just don't get to see. We're just basing our picks on numbers. But we have no other choice. It's kind of unfair to the players because some guys might get votes who don't deserve it. "Maybe there's a five-tool player who took more time than expected getting used to playing in this environment. He had a slow start in April, but he turned it on in May. So, he might be the best player at his position (in the league), but his overall stats aren't as good as somebody else's. That's one of the problems. Numbers don't always tell the whole story." Take Power third baseman Taylor Green, for example. He hit .250 with one homer, one triple, three doubles, five runs and six RBI in April compared to .400 with five homers, seven doubles, 18 runs and 23 RBI in May. Yet some voters might not have included him on their ballot because his .316 batting average as of May 25, the day before votes were due, might not have grabbed their attention. Or perhaps they overlooked it altogether. If they had seen him, however, they would have seen for themselves how well he can swing the bat -- and from the No. 9 spot, no less. They also would have seen him in the field, where he almost always makes the routine plays and more often than not makes the spectacular ones. In his case and others, seeing is believing. "In my opinion," Barch said, "it would make more sense for everyone to just vote for their own divisions." The process would be fairer and the teams would be better that way. The Chattanoogan: The Huntsville Stars grabbed a 5-1 lead, then held on to beat the Chattanooga Lookouts Sunday, 5-4. The key play of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning when, with bases loaded and two away, Jay Garthwaite hit a ball to the base of the Coca-Cola sign. Huntsville center fielder Steve Moss, made a leaping catch to rob Garthwaite of extra bases that would have cleared the bases. Moss was stunned and lay on the ground for a minute before leaving the field. Photos by Tim Evearitt, the Chattanoogan: Catcher J.C. After back to back two out singles from Michael Brantley and Chuckie Caufield, Andrew Lefave reached on Logan Morrison?s error at first base which plated Brantley and gave the Power the lead in the first inning. The Power scored three more times in the second. Taylor Green singled in a run, Darren Ford scored on an errant throw and Brantley reached on a Fielder?s choice to plate the last run of the inning. The Power sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the top of the third. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sound's career is off to poor start Pitcher allows three early runs in loss By TYLER BLANK Tennessean Staff Writer The Sounds dug an early hole and were unable to recover in a 4-1 loss to Tucson at Greer Stadium on Sunday. Starter Adam Pettyjohn gave up three first-inning runs, including two homers, in his Nashville debut. "I think it was a little bit of adrenalin. You've just got settle down after that and keep the game close," said Pettyjohn, who went on to pitch four scoreless innings. He gave up seven hits while striking out five, but Tucson still ended the Sounds' four-game winning streak. Tucson leadoff hitter Danny Richar hit Pettyjohn's third pitch over the left-field wall. One double and two batters later, Pettyjohn, who was promoted from Double-A Huntsville on Sunday, gave up a two-run shot. Meanwhile, Tucson pitcher Yusmeiro Petit (6-3) dominated, finishing with seven strikeouts, three walks and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. "Their guy (Petit) threw the ball well, mixed it up," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He kept us off balance." Tucson scored its fourth run in the sixth inning on an RBI bunt by Sidewinders left fielder Rich Thompson, which knocked in D'Antona. What they said: "New team, new atmosphere. You just got to calm everything down." ? Pettyjohn on giving up two home runs in the first inning of his Sounds debut. ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS New pitcher knocks in only run for Sounds By TYLER BLANK Tennessean Staff Writer Pitcher Adam Pettyjohn made his Sounds debut Sunday. The left-hander went five innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs. He also struck out five. Pettyjohn was called up from Double-A Huntsville Friday to fill the spot left by Jose Capellan, who was promoted to the majors. Pettyjohn also drove in the Sounds' only run on a single. Pettyjohn, 29, was 4-2 with an ERA of 4.45 in 11 starts at Huntsville. Pettyjohn struck out 54 batters in 56 2/3 innings while walking just 15. Pettyjohn has played in the Pacific Coast League before. He had 42 appearances with Fresno and Sacramento during 2004 and 2006. Great return: Outfielder Drew Anderson returned to Nashville with a triple in his first at-bat Sunday. Anderson rejoined the Sounds from Double-A Huntsville. He fills the hole created by first baseman Andy Abad, who went on the disabled list Sunday with a sprained wrist suffered in Saturday's game. Anderson finished 2-for-3 and scored the Sounds' only run. Anderson, 25, hit .444 with 11 RBIs in 12 games with Huntsville after he was sent down May 19. Anderson began the season hitting .197 in 36 games with Nashville. Past champs: Tucson and Nashville are the two most recent champions in the Pacific Coast League. The Sounds won the title in 2005, while Tucson won it last year. Nashville holds a 29-25 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1998. No luck: Sunday's game was only the fifth time Nashville has gone into the ninth inning trailing in 29 opportunities at home. The Sounds are 0-5 in those games. Extra credit: The major leagues have been good to former Sound Ryan Braun since he was called up May 24. Five of the third baseman's 10 major league hits have been for extra bases. On Sunday, he had a leadoff double in the third inning against the Marlins. Ahhh, relief: Tucson pitchers Randy Choate and Chad Harville picked up right where starter Yusmeiro Petit left off, allowing no hits over the final 2 2/3 innings, with Harville earning his league-leading 15th save. "We had some chances, but didn't come through," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said.

Final: Tucson (Diamondbacks) 4, Nashville 1 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Laynce Nix photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2361 Win Streak Ends With 4-1 Loss To Tucson NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds had their four-game winning streak come to a close with a 4-1 loss to the Tucson Sidewinders on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium. The bottom half of the Tucson lineup did most of the damage; the five through eight hitters combined for eight of the club?s 10 hits during an 8-for-16 evening. The visitors grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a pair of home runs against Nashville starter Adam Pettyjohn, who made his Sounds debut in the contest. Tucson second baseman Danny Richar put the visitors on the board with a leadoff solo homer to left, his seventh of the year. Jamie D?Antona finished the inning?s scoring when he turned a 3-2 Pettyjohn pitch into a two-out, two-run homer to left, his fifth longball of the year. Pettyjohn helped reduce the deficit for the Sounds in the bottom of the second when he lifted a two-out RBI single to center on an 0-2 pitch from Tucson starter Yusmeiro Petit. Drew Anderson (2-for-3), who tripled earlier in the frame in his first at-bat since rejoining Nashville, scored on the knock to make it a 3-1 game. AUDIO: Adam Pettyjohn RBI Single -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...06-3-1.mp3 Former Sound Rich Thompson increased the Tucson lead to 4-1 in the sixth when he dropped a two-out RBI bunt single down the first-base line against reliever Joe Thatcher. Petit (6-3) earned his team-leading sixth win for the Sidewinders after allowing one run on seven hits and fanning seven batters over 6 1/3 innings. Chad Harville earned his PCL-leading 15th save of the year after working out of a self-induced jam in the bottom of the ninth. The veteran walked Mike Rivera and Anderson to open the inning to bring the potential tying run to the plate. After striking out Charles Thomas for the first out, Harville induced a game-ending double play groundout from pinch-hitter J.R. Hopf in the youngster?s first career Triple-A at-bat. Pettyjohn (0-1) took the loss in his first Nashville outing after giving up three runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out five batters and walked none during his 70-pitch evening. Laynce Nix finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to extend his hitting streak to five games for the Sounds. The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Monday evening. Nashville right-hander Tim Dillard (3-3, 3.51) will man the bump for Nashville to square off against Tucson right-hander Enrique Gonzalez (2-4, 4.57). Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1195 Moss's Spectacular Catch Saves the Day! Steve Moss?s leaping catch as he crashed into the wall in center field to end the eighth inning helped preserve the lead in Huntsville?s 5-4 win over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon in the second of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars won for a fourth time in the last five games to improve to 30-25 on the season and maintained at least a share of first place in the North Division, pending the outcome of Tennessee?s game later Sunday against Birmingham, while the Lookouts fell to 25-32 and six games off the pace. Stars? starter Manny Parra worked seven solid innings, giving up two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four and was followed on the hill by Bo Hall, who took over in the eighth with a 5-2 lead. Paul Janish doubled with one out and scored when Enrique Cruz singled into right field. Hall struck out Cody Strait and was then replaced by Marino Salas, who had not gone longer than an inning to register any of his 11 saves. Salas walked pinch-hitter Tyrell Godwin on four pitches, gave up a single to Caonabo Cosme that loaded the bases and then walked J.C. Boscan to force in Cruz to make it 5-4. Garthwaite then crushed a 2-2 pitch just to the left of straightaway center and Moss went back and to his right to jump up and pull down what could have turned out to be the decisive hit in the game. Salas gave up a leadoff single to Luis Bolivar in the ninth but retired the next three hitters to earn his 12th save in as many tries and preserve the Stars fourth win in seven games against the Lookouts. Drew Anderson?s run-scoring hit in the first inning staked the home side to a 1-0 lead and marked the fifth time in as many starts on the road that Parra has been scored on in the first inning. The Stars took the lead for good in the second inning on a two-run single by Yohannis Perez, who delivered his first hit of the year that knocked in more than one run. Parra singled home a two-out run in the fourth to make it 3-1 Huntsville and Perez?s two-run double in the sixth pushed the visitors? advantage to 5-1. Adam Heether, who lost a 15-game hitting streak Saturday night, singled and doubled and scored three times for the Stars, who have collected a dozen hits in each of the first two games of the series. Garthwaite hit a wind-aided, opposite field home run to right field with two outs in the seventh off of Parra to trim the Stars lead to 5-2. It was just the second long ball allowed this season by the Stars? southpaw, who did not yield a round-tripper in six late season starts a year ago. Parra picked up his second win over the Lookouts, his second on the road and his sixth of the season, the most he has won in a season in a Stars uniform since pitching in Huntsville for the first time in 2004. The series continues Monday night when the Stars will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Lookouts? right-hander James Avery. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Nashville Media Notes: ABAD PLACED ON D.L.; ANDERSON REJOINS SOUNDS: First baseman Andy Abad was placed on the disabled list today, retroactive to yesterday, due to a left wrist sprain he sustained while sliding into second base during a stolen base attempt in Friday evening?s win against Las Vegas. The veteran is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak, the Sounds? longest of the 2007 season. Outfielder Drew Anderson has rejoined Nashville from Double-A Huntsville to fill Abad?s roster spot. The 25-year-old batted an impressive .444 (20-for-45) with 11 RBIs in 12 Southern League contests for the Stars after being sent down from Nashville on May 19. Anderson opened the 2007 campaign by hitting just .197 (24-for-122) in 36 contests for the Sounds.
