2023 Minor League Transaction Thread
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Via @Joseph Zarr as he live-watched Saturday evening 4/8: "The training staff is looking at (Nashville RHP) Tyler Herb after a 93 MPH sinker. Something seemed to happen with his hand or elbow there? Not good. That ended quickly. Ugh. One of my favorite Sounds is getting shelved here. He'll make way for LHP Alex Claudio. Bummer! This just after inducing a key double play in his first batter faced. And then after ripping an 0-1 sinker inside he just came up shaking that arm and Navarreto quickly came to the mound, and he was followed by the entire Sounds staff. *** On Sunday's 4/16 pre-game show, Manager Rick Sweet lamented Herb's loss in the rotation and indicated he is going to miss the majority of the season. -

Over the course of a long season, winning just 40% of the time is clearly not ideal. On any one specific date on the calendar, it can be chalked up as just part of the daily ride baseball gives its fans. When the losses aren't necessarily competitive, as was the case Saturday, we search for positives regardless. Let's begin the review of the action, keeping in mind that for consistency's sake all season, we always visit the day from top to bottom in the Brewers' chain, kicking off with the Sounds. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic TRANSACTIONS: - C Brent Diaz activated by AAA Nashville from Development List - the recently-turned 27-year-old has seen minimal action at the AAA level the past two years (five games), with 113 games at AA Biloxi. Diaz, in his 7th year (29th round, 2017, Louisiana Tech) qualifies for minor league free agency at season's end. Final: Norfolk (Orioles) 11, Nashville 8 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Frelick's Miraculous Catch, Three Homers Overshadow Sounds Loss - Nashville outfielder, prospect makes gravity-defying grab to rob extra bases in the third inning Pre-Game Media Notes / Additional Stat Tidbits via the "Sounds Bytes" Blog Box Score / Game Log OK, how many of you read that headline and thought oh my, Sal Frelick hit three home runs? No, not the case, in fact, Frelick was scheduled for a rest/regroup day and only entered in the 3rd inning. RF Tyler Naquin was hit by a pitch in the 1st and remained in the game until being pulled at that juncture. Frelick was 0-for-2 with a walk and his OPS sits at just .528 after 48 AB's (five walks, just six K's). Those balls in play will start to self-correct things soon, no doubt. As always, plenty of tidbits in the affiliate game summaries we can't possibly always detail here, including Frelick's catcher interference instances as of late, be sure to click above. Note to the Sounds' production crew - the volume on the Twitter posts has been unusually low as of late, maybe an adjustment needed... And thank you for the correction to my baseball math! Yes, RHP Caleb Boushley was pitching on three days' rest, but he didn't make it out of the first inning last time out. Rough patch for the pride of Hortonville and UW-La Crosse. Final: Pensacola (Marlins) 7, Biloxi 1 Via the Shuckers' site: Shuckers Fall to Blue Wahoos, 7-1 - Biloxi starter Carlos Rodriguez continues good form, Shuckers held to one hit in loss Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Tyler Black hit a line drive single in the 4th for the lone Shuckers' hit. Pitching has ruled in the eight-team Southern League thus far, as those Biloxi box score averages aren't inspiring through just eight games. The sortable league batting figures will reflect that. RHP Carlos Rodriguez continues to impress. Final: Wisconsin 6, Peoria (Cardinals) 3 Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Early Lead Paces Wisconsin Past Peoria - Rattlers top Chiefs 6-3 Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box Box Score / Game Log Here's what Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote about the Brewers' international signing class back in January: By signing four more players from Nicaragua, the Brewers are up to 10 Nicaraguan prospects from the international market, a figure that Brewers manager of international scouting and player personnel James Armstrong estimated might be the most ever rostered at the same time by an organization. All 10 of them are pitchers, too. It’s a group headlined by right-hander Stiven Cruz, a 2019 signee who pitched well after a promotion to Class High-A last season. While the Brewers aren’t deliberately targeting talented arms in Nicaragua, identifying pitching is natural for Salvador Ayestas, the team’s head scout in the country. This year’s Nicaraguan signees: Right-handed pitchers Saul Sánchez, Nestor Mena, Melvin Hernández and Enniel Cortez. I would quibble with Curt (who's fantsatic) in that he overlooked the Brewers' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in Carlos Rodriguez as the "headliner", who would go on to impress in a big start for his country in the WBC a couple of months after the article was written. Similar to focusing on Venezuela over the past decade when many organizations pulled back from that country, any advantage the Crew can get by targeting under-appreciated areas will be key. Are Rodriguez and Stiven Cruz the most talented Nicaraguan arms in all of MiLB currently? It's quite possible. Joe Gray, Jr. and Ben Metzinger on base thrice more apiece, continuing hot starts. Final, Game One: Carolina 6, Salem (Red Sox) 2 Final, Game Two: Salem 5, Carolina 2 Via the Mudcats' site: Carolina Splits Saturday Doubleheader - The Mudcats took game one of Saturday's doubleheader while winning their first home game of the season Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Box Score / Game One Game Log Game Two Box Score / Game Two Game Log Big thanks to Voice of the Mudcats Greg Young, Jr. as that doubleheader summary is absolutely packed with useful information. In Game One, that was a tough spot to pull RHP Yujanyer Herrera, one out shy of qualifying for the win after retiring the first two men in the 5th. A hard pitch count limit was likely 70 or 75, as the 19-year-old Herrera sat at 72 in hopes of garnering his first win above the Maryvale level. Third baseman Luke Adams doesn't turn 19 years old until next week, This is Tayden Hall's age 20 season. Beyond them both being 6'4", 210 lb. athletes, the sentiment is we'll be reading a TON about their exploits in 2023. On Friday night, MiLB prospect watchers had their eyes trained on Biloxi, and for good reason, as a couple of 19-year-old top players faced off. Technically, Marlins 6'8" RHP Eury Perez pitched on the eve of his 20th birthday, but yes, officially this was a battle of teenagers on the AA level. The Brewers' Jackson Chourio and Perez each experienced highs and lows within the contest. Elsewhere, the Crew's farm experienced a win, a loss, and well, the state of North Carolina has been a bit water-logged all month. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic TRANSACTIONS: INF Josh VanMeter activated from AAA Nashville's 7-day injured list OF Skye Bolt placed on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list RHP Adrian Houser sent to AAA Nashville on rehab assignment Final: Norfolk (Orioles) 6, Nashville 1 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Sounds Win Streak Snapped by Norfolk - Nashville falls by 6-1 score after Tides tack on late Pre-Game Media Notes / Additional Stat Tidbits via the "Sounds Bytes" Blog Box Score / Game Log Rehabbing RHP Adrian Houser danced around three baserunners in the 1st inning thanks to a double play grounder and avoided surrendering a run despite allowing a one-out ground-rule double in his 2nd and final inning. The focus of this play is Andruw Monasterio's reflexes, but for me, it's Houser's footwork, a bit of an Irish Jig vibe here: On the small-sample bright side, RH Reliever Jake Cousins has recorded seven outs over his three outings, and all seven outs are via the strikeout. Cousins entered in the 8th inning here (HBP, K) and stranded a runner for Lucas Erceg. However in the 9th, he surrendered a walk, HR, and three line drive singles before being lifted. Shake it off, Jake, you're still critical depth for 2023. As we await Payton Henry's DFA fate, we continue to be enamored with Brian Navarreto's spectacular defensive abilities: Final: Biloxi 7, Pensacola (Marlins) 1 Via the Shuckers' site: Chourio's Three-Run Home Run Powers Shuckers to 7-1 Win - Shuckers win big in front of 3,202 fans at MGM Park Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log As referred to in our lead paragraph, the focus here was on the respective big-hype prospects for each organization. To allow us to focus on deserving others, read this MiLB feature article which includes video of all three Eury Perez - Jackson Chourio at-bats. Chourio vs. Eury matchup lives up to hype RHP Christian Mejias won't turn 24 years old until next month, yet he's a veteran of seven minor league seasons in the Astros' system (OK, six - darn you, 2020). This season is his first taste of AA, and his experience at High-A includes only 30 innings of 8.01 ERA ball last summer. Only 27 of Mejias' 71 professional appearances have been starts. So the shiny line in this game (5 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 8 K) sure was pretty! The bottom four in the order (Wes Clarke, Felix Valerio, Carlos Rodriguez, Freddy Zamora) combined to reach base nine times, nice! Third baseman Tyler Black (sweet to type "third baseman" each game) has reached base eight times (2 H, 5 BB, 1 HBP). And he's 6-for-6 in SB attempts! Stay aggressive, but stay healthy, too! Speaking of aggressive baserunning - wheels! As of post time here Saturday AM, the Shuckers pre-game interview archive page features the latest entry, RHP Justin Jarvis, coming of a dazzling effort. Going back one night, we're lucky Biloxi has two TV outlets that often provide home game footage. Check out a sweet package from Thursday night. Already excited that RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez gets the start tonight for the Shuckers at 6:05 Central, quickly has become a "must-see" attraction. With Freddy Peralta and the big-league club kicking off at 3:00 PM, there is a nice opportunity to flip over to the Shuckers immediately after. Final: Wisconsin 5, Peoria (Cardinals) 2 Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Rattlers Go Long to Beat Chiefs - Gray & Metzinger homer in Wisconsin’s 5-2 win over Peoria Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box - (Actually, already these are the Saturday game notes!) Box Score / Game Log When he was drafted, Mr. Moore was Robert. All through the Australian Winter League season, Mr. Moore was Bob. And now, he's apparently Rob. Help us out, young man! This is the thing about high school draft picks. Joe Gray, Jr. is now playing in his 6th organizational season. In a crowded top-end organizational outfield, I'm all for Joe having a huge bounce-back campaign and building big trade value for this summer or next offseason, where we can then root for him to succeed wherever he may land. There's more than one way a club can benefit from big-time on-the-field production. Love to see the nine K's vs. one walk (OK, two HBP's, an often-glossed-over box score notation) for RHP's Cameron Wagoner, Max Lazar and Bo Bowman. Bowman's flowing locks, as you just watched, are targeted for charitable donation at some point in 2023. For those in the Green Bay local TV area: Eleven Timber Rattlers Games Broadcast on CW-14 in 2023 Via the Mudcats' site: Friday's game between Salem and Carolina was postponed due to wet grounds at Five County Stadium Already the third time the 'Cats have had to adjust the schedule. Enjoy your Saturday, all.
