  2. Scottsdale scores two in the top of the ninth to win, 3-1, on Saturday. Steve Moss singled in four AB's (two K's). Vinny Rottino was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt and his 4th stolen base of the fall. He was charged with a passed ball on a swinging strike three in the 4th that did not lead to a run. Peoria only ran on him once (lack of baserunners), and was successful in that one attempt. Four Scorpion pitchers took a no-hitter into the seventh, so give Vinniy some credit there. Here's the winning rally in which Moss and Rottino took part: Scottsdale Top 9th - Pitcher Change: T. J. Beam replaces Sean Henn. - Steve Moss singles on a ground ball to left fielder Dee Brown. - Vinny Rottino hits a sacrifice bunt. Throwing error by catcher Colt Morton. Steve Moss to 3rd. Vinny Rottino to 1st. - With Mark Reynolds batting, Vinny Rottino steals (4) 2nd base. - Mark Reynolds strikes out swinging. - Matthew Brown out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Brett Gardner. Steve Moss scores. Vinny Rottino scores. Throwing error by shortstop Brendan Ryan. - Travis Ishikawa strikes out swinging. Steve Bray's 5th inning: Peo Saguaros Bottom 5th - Pitcher Change: Steve Bray replaces Wesley Whisler. - Brett Gardner flies out to left fielder Bradley Coon. - Brendan Ryan flies out to left fielder Bradley Coon. - Vince Sinisi walks. - Colt Morton pops out to first baseman Travis Ishikawa in foul territory. www.minorleaguebaseball.c...n_peswin_1 Scottsdale reliever Steve Bray combined with three other pitchers to no-hit the Peoria Saguaros for 6 2/3 innings. 3. Brewerfan.net has learned that the Brewers have signed Cuban defector, shortstop Yohannis Perez. The just-turned 24-year-old Perez was signed to a minor league (non-40 man) contract and is expected to debut next spring at no lower than AA. This has the potential to be a very big signing for the organization. Perez has been compared to fellow defector and current Seattle shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who is coming off a fine rookie season. As you?ll see in the linked articles below, it is pretty exciting to read Rickie Weeks? name as an offensive comparison, but with what would seem to be more contact and less power for Perez. When informed of the signing today, Brewerfan?s Patrick Ebert (colbyjack) told me Perez may just be a darkhorse for the utility infield job out of spring training next year, and that Perez has received a few (probably unfair) comparisons to Omar Vizquel given his slick glove work and contact bat. Regardless, Perez is universally regarded as an excellent defensive shortstop. Given our announcement, the Brewers will likely follow-up on their own in the coming days. Also, look for the good folks at Baseball America and others to work their sources for more information and to release follow-up stories of their own. There are no bonus money details available regarding the Perez signing, and it?s very, very difficult to estimate what the dollar amount may have been. Betancourt signed a four-year major league contract worth $3.65 million. That?s not the case with Perez, but a bonus of over $1 million is not out of the question, as you?ll read below. As promised, additional info: Link to Full Baseball America article from August 7, 2006, selected paragraphs follow: www.baseballamerica.com/t...62124.html Cuban Defectors Attract Interest In Dominican By John Manuel Contributing: Chris Kline Agent Jaime Torres represents high-profile Cuban defectors such as Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and White Sox righthander Jose Contreras. In other words, while he's an agent, not a scout, he does know talent. And he believes he has some future big leaguers among the five Cuban defectors working out in the Dominican Republic. All five players have been certified by Major League Baseball as free agents, according to Torres. Three of the players--catcher Alexis Fonseca, righthander Serguey Linares and infielder Yunesky Sanchez -- can sign at any time, having cleared the bureaucratic process known as unblocking. Two others, righthander Yuslan Herrera and shortstop Yohannis Perez, have not yet been "unblocked" but should complete the process sooner rather than later. Torres said his goal for the group is to have them signed to 2007 contracts in time to go to instructional league with major league organizations, or at least in time for them to be placed in a Caribbean winter league. "I think some of these players could step in right now in the major leagues and play," Torres said. "You talk about Betancourt, and to me, Yohannis Perez is a very similar type of talent, with similar potential. Two scouts familiar with the players told Baseball America that Herrera was the most impressive of the quintet at a recent workout at the Diamondbacks academy in the Dominican, but that Linares and Perez have attracted the most attention of the group from scouts. Perez, listed with an Oct. 11, 1982 birthday, has the most significant upside, as one scout said Perez once resembled Rickie Weeks due to his build, strong wrists and quick hands. He hit .271 with 10 home runs in more than 1,200 at-bats in his Serie Nacional career. However, Perez hasn't played in any kind of league in the last two years since his defection, and has put on weight. Torres said Perez probably was 12-15 pounds heavier than he needed to be, checking in at 192 pounds rather than a desired 180-185. Torres said Perez is working to "have the body he needs to have." "He ran a 6.6 (seconds over 60 yards) down there but I've seen him run better than a 6.4," said one international scout. "He's shown outstanding tools and instincts in the past, good hands--he can play. But what is he now, when he hasn't played for two years? He didn't see any good pitches to hit in the simulated game they played, so it was hard to say anything about his hitting, plus they used Baum (wood composite) bats. "All four of them ate some bad shrimp the night before, and Perez was throwing up during the game. It was just hard to tell what he is." Torres said he's had overtures from several organizations for different players, from the "usual suspects" such as the Mariners, Mets, Red Sox and Yankees but also from other "surprising" organizations. While money obviously is a major factor in where they will sign, Torres said the right fit also is crucial for players in such unique circumstances as Cuban defectors. "The most money doesn't necessarily make it the best situation," he said. "Herrera could pitch in the major leagues right now, and I think Linares and Perez could make a club out of spring training. It would be good for them to go somewhere where they have that chance. The organization also has to have people who can help them deal with the cultural and other adjustments they have to make." Here's another interesting link, also from August, from a gentleman working on a year-long research project on the globalization of baseball, text follows: globalbaseball.wordpress.com/2006/08/01/ Today I went to a tryout of four Cuban defectors at the Arizona Diamondbacks´ academy. The scene there was wild. The players´agent told me that at least 26 major-league teams had their scouts in attendance. No idea about the identity of the few teams who weren´t interested, but I was able to pick out reps from the Devil Rays, Yankees, Mets, Giants, Cubs, Mariners, Braves, Indians, Diamondbacks, Reds, Twins, Brewers, and Nationals. The scouts who came were a bit disappointed to find out that the most interesting player, 23-year-old pitcher Sergei Linares, was suffering from food poisoning. Linares is reported to throw in the high 90s, but he was held out of the simulated game and limited to a side-throwing session. The other three players are 23 y/o shortstop Yohannis Perez, 23 y/o catcher Alexis Fonesca, and 25 y/o RHP Yoslan Herrera. Perez, who was also suffering from foid poisoning, is a line-drive hitting shortstop who drew wide praise for his footwork and glove. His bat wasn´t on display too much today, as the raw DSL pitchers he faced nearly hit him five times. He ended up taking a couple of walks on pitches nowhere near the zone and hitting a double in what I saw of the simulated game. Fonesca displayed solid gap power, going 4-for-4 in the at-bats I witnessed, with 2 doubles and 2 triples. Against better defenders, those triples would have been a double and a single, but his bat definitely drew some interest. Herrera was nowhere near as hyped as Linares, but seemed to handle himself just fine in the tryout. His fastball was sitting between 90-92, and the DSL Devil Rays, who served as the whipping boys for this exhibition, were helpless against his breaking ball. The prevailing opinion of the people I spoke with was that Linares and Perez were the best of the group. It?s possible that these players could get bonuses north of $1 million. In terms of market value, nobody´s really sure how to treat Cuban players yet. In the wake of the Contreras signing, the prevailing wisdom was that the Cuban mystique caused teams to overrate - and overpay - defectors. The Yuniesky Betancourt signing, which turned out to be a huge bargain, changed all that. There hasn´t been a significant Cuban signing since Betancourt came over, and none of the scouts I talked to today had any idea what these players´ price range would be. ***It's exciting to think about the added shortstop depth this provides the organization behind J.J. Hardy, not to mention depth which would seem to solidify a Bill Hall position move. Also great to see that the Brewers can indeed be a "player" in these signings when up against the "big boy" organizations. We'll keep you linked to any updates that other sources provide. -- Jim
  4. Saturday afternoon has Gameday AFL for you at 1:30 Central. www.minorleaguebaseball.c.../index.jsp Steve Moss (batting 2nd, RF) and Vinny Rottino (Catcher, batting 3rd) are in the Scottsdale lineup. No audio today, finally some Scottsdale audio coming your way on Monday.
  5. In Baseball America's latest Transaction update, they list RHP Vince Perkins as being released. We believe this was just a paper transaction as part of removing him from the 40-man roster, and believe he is still within the organization. We're confirming, but consider Perkins (under a AAA contract) a Brewer unless told otherwise.
  6. Copied this info from the recent thread detailing the Brewers' efforts at teaching their very young kids about life situations, restaurant etiquette, etc. We're actually aware of a couple of new names from the Latin ranks listed as infielders, Allixon Cequea and Luis Sanchez, but because we have literally no information on them in terms of vitals, country, etc. -- we haven't mentioned them nor built Player Index pages for them, preferring to wait until the media guide comes out in the spring. Cequea is only 16 years old, apparently, and both he and Luis Sanchez were signed this past July. Again, I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Cequea specifically in that regard based on that article. It's great to know there are readers out there scouring us for every detail on these things! And another addition in that category: RHP Pedro Lambertus At least the Brewers can tell the kids they've targeted that they will come to Maryvale right away, as opposed to playing on a Dominican Summer League team. That's a bargaining chip.
  7. To wrap up the list from the very first post in this thread, RHP Brandon Harmsen, C / DH Kyle Phillips, LHP Kyle Pawelczyk, and infielder David Parker remain on the Brewers' organizational roster heading into next spring.
  8. North Shore lost 11-4 Friday night. www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;did=milb Darren Ford (leadoff, CF) singled in four AB's (one K) and also walked. He stole a base and was also picked off. He's now 10-for-47 (.213), but an OBP above .350 now. Two of the ten hits are doubles. He's struck out 21 times, continuing a theme from the regular season. He's now 7-for-9 in SB attempts. Lorenzo Cain (RF) singled twice in five AB's, and drove in two runs with his two-out 8th inning single. He mishandled a sharp ground ball to right on the first batter of the game for his first error of the season. Now 14-for-59 (.237), but only three walks thus far.
  9. Ryan finished 0-for-4 with two K's as his "East" team won 3-1, but played the whole game at third base, a good sign health-wise. He committed an error in the 9th that didn't hurt. His stats won't count as league stats. The AFL season nears the midpoint, not much can diminish his super fall season thus far... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;did=milb
  10. Third baseman Zach McAngus (Washington State) is a Hawaii native, included in this article from Honolulu, just a quote or two: starbulletin.com/2006/10/...ory06.html Rookie leaguers get a taste By Al Chase achase@starbulletin.com Matt Inouye, Milton Loo, Kanekoa Texeira, Esteban Lopez, Patrick McGuigan and Zach McAngus made their professional baseball debuts in rookie leagues last summer. McAngus (Kamehameha) was considering playing independent baseball after completing his career at Washington State when a regional scout for the Milwaukee Brewers called. "He said they had an opening in the Arizona League. It was kind of out of the blue," said McAngus, who jumped at the opportunity. Signed by the Brewers as a nondrafted free agent, McAngus played 41 games at third base and hit .260 with 11 doubles, two triples, two homers and 18 RBIs. "I think I did pretty well. My average was a little disappointing. It took time getting used to wood bats," McAngus said. He will graduate in December with a degree in sports management. "I'm just trying to focus on baseball and play as long as I can. When I'm done, I want to stay involved with baseball, perhaps work in a front office," McAngus said.
  11. Nashville's site notes the following for us re: the Venezuelan League -- Corey Thurman is 1-1 with a 1.37 ERA (3 ER / 19.2 IP) in three starts for Oriente. He has walked four batters and struck out 16. Catcher Nestor Corredor is hitless in two at-bats through two games of action.

  13. Scottsdale scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th to force a 6-6 tie and their game Thursday was suspended after 11 innings, to be completed later this season. Ryan Braun appeared as pinch-hitter / DH, going 1-for-2, and driving in yet another run. That's a good sign that he'll be able to DH in Friday night's inaugural Rising Stars Showcase, 9:00 PM Central. Audio will be available here: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p?sid=l119 East infielder Ryan Braun was listed as questionable but currently is scheduled to play. 14. From Baseball America today: Scottsdale third baseman Ryan Braun (Brewers) took sole possession of the AFL home run lead with five, and now leads the league in RBIs (20) as well. Braun left Wednesday?s game at Mesa after one at-bat as the DH. "If you don't crowd him inside with a good heater you better duck or pitch with an L-screen in front of you," a scout from an American League club said. "He's strong and the bat is fast."

  16. First, a link to our post on 2006 42nd round RHP Matt Peck: p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...mp;stop=42 Link while active, text follows: www.enidnews.com/siteSear...33928.html Peck headed for OSU By Mark Rountree Enid (OK) News Sports Editor One of the Enid Majors? big-game pitchers is going big-time. Matt Peck has committed verbally to Oklahoma State. Peck, 19, visited the Stillwater campus Monday, and came away with an offer from OSU head coach Frank Anderson. ?I want to be part of the program,?? said Peck, now a sophomore at Cowley County (Kan.) Community College. Peck also was recruited by Louisiana-Monroe and Michigan State. Peck went 6-1 with a 2.50 ERA last season for the Tigers and is expected to be one of the team?s top pitchers again this year. Peck was drafted in the 42nd round by the Milwaukee Brewers in the June draft. He said there is a possibility he could sign with the Brewers next spring. ?If I have a good spring (at Cowley) and if the Brewers put up some good (money) numbers, I would think about it,?? he said. Peck said he would not sign for less than a six-figure signing bonus. Resting what he termed a tired arm, the right-hander pitched only six innings during Cowley?s fall scrimmages. The former Cimarron High School All-Stater was a big-game pitcher for the Enid Majors. Manager Bill Mayberry referred to Peck as his ?bell-cow?? pitcher. Peck went 11-4 for the Majors last summer, helping the team to a state championship and a second-place finish in the Mid-South Regional in Crowley, La. Peck pitched a no-hitter against Lawton in June ? on the same day he was drafted by the Brewers ? in a game at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Two summers ago, he beat the defending state champion Edmond Stars in the second round of the state tournament and got the save against Metairie, La., in the finals of the regional tournament in Pine Bluff, Ark., to put Enid into the American Legion World Series in Rapid City, S.D. Peck started the series opener, and was the starter but did not get the decision in the championship game victory over Twin Cities, Wash. ?Peck?s breaking ball, when it was right, was the best individual pitch that anybody had in any tournament we played in,?? said Mayberry.
  17. MiLB.com: I will be making my fourth trip to the AFL at the end of the month. The experience is a baseball buffet that no fan should miss. The first year, we went to a game in Maryvale. It is a beautiful park. Why is it no longer in the mix? -- Don About Maryvale, it was simply a matter of vacancy, or the lack thereof. The Chicago White Sox, who have their Spring Training home in Tucson, have their instructional league team play in Maryvale. They use the main clubhouse at the complex there. The Brewers, the year-round tenants there, occupy the Minor League side of the facilities. So there's no room at the inn. As a result, the AFL doubled up in Peoria. They would like to return to Maryvale some day in the future.
  18. Scottsdale scores two in the top of the 9th to win 7-5 Wednesday afternoon www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;did=milb After flying out to right field to end the first inning, designated hitter Ryan Braun was pinch-hit for in the 4th. Hopefully this was planned and Braun is OK. RHP Steve Bray's scoreless 5th inning: Mesa Bottom 5th - Pitcher Change: Steve Bray replaces Matt Wilhite. - Chin Lung Hu called out on strikes. - Eric Patterson singles on a line drive to center fielder Jerry Owens. - With Bobby Malek batting, Eric Patterson caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Bobby Wilson to shortstop Kevin Frandsen. - Bobby Malek called out on strikes. Steve Moss was idle. Vinny Rottino played right field and batted 6th. - grounds out to third base in the 2nd with one out, man on 1st base moved to 2nd - called out on strikes to end the 4th, man was on first - singles on a line drive to center field to lead off the 7th, steals second base, later scores - grounds out to short leading off the 9th
  19. The Brewers now have much more flexibility in their 40-man roster for this offseason, as players like Alcides Escobar and Charlie Fermaint now don't have to be added until next year. This also means you may as well protect the likes of Lou Palmisano and Tim Dillard, who were exposed last year by not being on the 40-man. Also a better chance a reliever like Steve Bray may be added to the 40-man prior to this year's Rule 5. This year's Rule 5 draft should be minimal in activity, as it will be easier for all clubs to find spots for those worthy of 40-man slots. Baseball America: www.baseballamerica.com/t...62720.html The major league portion of the Rule 5 draft will be affected by giving teams one extra year to protect players from it. Rather than teams being allowed three years (for players signed at age 19 or older) or four years (for players 18 and younger) before leaving them off the 40-man roster subjects them to the Rule 5 draft, those periods have been lengthened to four and five. Ownership considered this a significant boost in their efforts to operate their minor league systems more effectively. "It gives the clubs more flexibility with their roster," said MacPhail, who added that the cost to select a player ($50,000) or get him back from the selecting club ($25,000) remain the same. "Anytime you can give them more tools to operate as efficiently as they possibly can is something we strive to do," he continued. "There are a lot of kids at that stage where you?re just not quite sure whether you want to get that clock ticking--the last thing you want to do is take a talented 22-year-old kid who?s not ready and you develop him for somebody else. Or often you?ll see guys taken out of A-ball who aren?t close but they get plucked out of the Midwest League. You try to let the developing clubs get as much time as they possibly can to make the best decisions they can." This rule applies to this current offseason, meaning that many minor league players who had expected to either be placed on the 40-man roster or be subject to the Rule 5 draft will have to wait another year. The union did negotiate a higher minimum salary for 40-man roster players optioned to the minor leagues ($60,000 next year), but acknowledged that this was a significant concession to ownership. "That was one of the major things we had to give up, no question about it--to me it was the worst thing we had to give up," said Diamondbacks infielder Craig Counsell, a player representative to the union negotiating team. "Some players, especially immediately, are going to be hurt by that--this year. But in the end, you have to give up something to get something."

  24. If you mean compared to the predicted list above, yes. BA's list does not account for those players like Jared Fernandez and Zach Sorensen who were on 40-man rosters earlier this season and thus were eligible to declare free agency last week. MiLB.com has their listing for a second year, but it does not correctly reflect (yet) the many players who have re-signed with their clubs, such as the several listed as re-signed by the Brewers at the beginning of this post. Still it's another aid: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...index.jsp? MiLB.com lists Ozzie Chavez, which we believe is incorrect (still a year away), and they can't spell Milwaukee http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
