  5. West Virginia Site Update: Power and Grasshoppers will double up on Buck Night Charleston, WV (APRIL 25, 2006) ? The first Two for Tuesday at Appalachian Power Park was washed away earlier this evening, as the first game of the series between West Virginia Power and Greensboro Grasshoppers was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday night, for the first Buck Night of the 2006 season at Appalachian Power Park. The first game on Thursday night will begin at 6:05 PM (5:05 Central). Tomorrow morning?s game will be a regular nine inning game as it was originally scheduled and it will not be effected by tonight?s postponement. The Power will now begin the three game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday morning. Left hander Dave Welch (0-1, 1.38) will start for the Power and the Grasshoppers will counter with right hander Dan Barone (2-0, 0.49). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM (9:35 Central).
  6. West Virginia Power Press Release: CHARLESTON, WV (April 25, 2006) - The West Virginia Power, class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made another change to their roster. Today, infielder Michael Bell was added to the roster and utility infielder Scott McKnight was promoted to Brevard County of the Florida State League. McKnight played both second base and shortstop for the Power. In five games McKnight hit .222 with a triple and three singles. Bell joins the Power from extended spring training. Bell, a fifteenth round pick in the 2005 draft, played his college ball at Grayson County Community College in Texas. Last year Bell hit .300 and knocked in 42 runs over 58 games with the Helena Brewers. We are efforting to learn if this move is in conjunction with a possible move involving Manatee shortstop Alcides Escobar, who has not seen action in over a week. This is where the abysmal lack of media coverage from Brevard County comes into play.
  7. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...006042536/ Power pitchers hope to put lid on Grasshoppers Jacob Messer Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Wish the West Virginia Power pitchers luck. They might need it this series against Greensboro Grasshoppers third baseman Gabriel Sanchez, who could accomplish a rare feat this season if he continues his hot hitting. Sanchez could become the third player to win the South Atlantic League Triple Crown. He ranks first in homers (seven), first in RBI (20) and second in batting average (.412) through Monday's games. He also leads the league in hits (28), runs (15) and slugging percentage (.750). "It is still early in the season," Power Manager Mike Guerrero said, "but he is having a pretty good start." The only SAL Triple Crown winners are former Asheville Tourists stars Patrick Putnam (.361/24/142 in 1976) and David Rivera (.346/26/118 in 1977), who coincidentally did it in back-to-back seasons. Former Nitro High School and West Virginia University quarterback J.R. House nearly did it in 2000 when he played for the Hickory Crawdads. He ranked first in hitting (.348), first in homers (23) and fourth in RBI (90) despite missing a month with mononucleosis. Resurrecting his professional baseball career after a one-year stint in college football, House now plays for the Houston Astros' Class AA affiliate, the Corpus Christi (Texas) Hooks. The Power (7-10) begins a three-game homestand with the Grasshoppers (10-8) Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. Wednesday's game is a 10:35 AM (9:35 Central) Grand Slam School Day start. The Power will start left-hander Dave Welch (0-1, 1.38) tonight. The Grasshoppers will counter with right-hander Dan Barone (2-0, 0.49). * * *THE POWER will play nine of its next 12 games at home, where Guerrero and his players can "start working on our fundamentals." "We haven't had a long homestand yet," Guerrero said. "We need to go home and get to work." AH, THE APP ... home sweet home. That's except for Power third baseman and designated hitter Tony Festa, who is batting .000 (0-for-10 in three games) at home compared to .300 (6-for-20 in six games) on the road. "I don't know what it is," said Festa, who is hitting .200 (6-for-30 in nine games) overall. "I guess I was putting too much pressure on myself, playing in front of the home crowd and trying to do too much." Considering he has five hits in his last three games, chances are good Festa will pick up his first home hit tonight. "Everything is coming together," said Festa, who had only one hit in his first six games. "Now, I'm focusing on carrying it over to the homestand." * * *THE NINTH inning has been a nightmare -- and a recurring one, at that -- for the Power. West Virginia's opponents have batted in the final inning in 14 of its 17 games and scored 22 runs in those at-bats. The Power has lost six games because of its opponents' ninth-inning rallies, including a 4-3 loss to the Lexington (Ky.) Legends on Monday. The Legends scored two runs (both unearned) on two hits and two errors in the ninth to collect the come-from-behind victory. "We have been playing pretty good, but we haven't been able to close games out," said Guerrero, whose team allowed eight ninth-inning runs to the Hagerstown Suns in a three-game series last week. "That is the way it has been all season. We just need to learn how to play all 27 outs." Blame falls on the bullpen and the defense, both of which have been shaky at times. Case in point: Power relievers have allowed 46 runs (36 earned) in 75 2/3 innings, and Power fielders have committed 28 errors. "We have to be able to execute" in the field and on the mound, Guerrero said. There is no quick-and-easy solution, pitching coach John Curtis said. "You just send them back out there, and, hopefully, they will right the ship," Curtis said. "It isn't something you can sit down and say, ?Do this differently' or ?Do that differently.' "The pitchers have to learn how to close out games. The team has to learn, too." * * *CATCHER AND designated hitter Angel Salome has proven he is clutch this season. Salome is hitting .385 with nine RBI with runners on base, including .333 with all of his RBI with them in scoring position. All are team highs in those categories. The key? Salome said he simply treats each appearance -- runners or not -- like batting practice, just like hitting coach Mike Lum advises him. "You take the same approach," Salome said. "You stay focused, and you look for your pitch. If they don't throw it to you, you don't swing."
  8. Link while active, text follows: newsok.com/article/1825624/ Nashville's Gwynn had a special teacher By Bob Hersom Oklahoman Staff Writer Tony Gwynn Jr. isn't yet the baseball player his famous father was, but he is just as good a person. As the leadoff man and center fielder for the Nashville Sounds, he isn't yet Tony Gwynn Sr., the eight-time National League batting champ who likely will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame next year. But Tony Gwynn Jr. acts and sounds exactly like his famous father, from the high-pitched voice to the friendly, inviting demeanor. "He's an oustanding person," Nashville manager Frank Kremblas said. "He's a great kid, just a great kid," said RedHawks pitching coach Andy Hawkins, who was Tony Gwynn's teammate in San Diego from 1982-88. He's also Tony Gwynn Jr. again, after a few years as Anthony Gwynn. The name change came five years ago, after Gwynn went 0-for-4 in his first game at San Diego State. His coach said he should go by Anthony Gwynn. "He said he wanted to take the pressure off me a little bit, kind of separate me from my dad's name," Gwynn, 23, said. "I went 2-for-5 the next day and then went on about a 15-game hitting streak right after that." As Anthony Gwynn at SDSU, he earned All-America status in 2003, his third and final season with the Aztecs. His coach in that final college season: Tony Gwynn, who remains the Aztecs' coach today. "He's a fabulous teacher," Gwynn said of his dad. "The thing he had to get used to was that everybody didn't catch on as fast as he did. I think once he learned that he just became an even better coach. "He really keeps it simple. To somebody trying to learn hitting, keeping it simple is probably the best way of going about it, the easiest way to learn. So I've always felt he was a great coach." And a great dad, too. The younger Gwynn said his dad is his hero. "The fact that he played baseball for 20 years is just an extra," Junior said. "He's a great, great person, a great father. We always enjoy our time together. We talk on the phone quite a bit." Junior played college baseball for only one season under his dad. The younger Gwynn, who like his dad bats left-handed, was the Milwaukee Brewers' second round draft choice in 2003. He hit .280 in his first year, in Class A, and stole 14 bases in 16 attempts. He struggled in his second season, batting only .243 in Double-A, but rebounded to .271 last year, in his second Double-A season. He's stolen 34 bases each of the past two seasons. This year, he is batting .333 in his first Triple-A season. "He works hard on all facets of the game," Kremblas said. "He still makes mistakes that all young guys make, which is to be expected. But I'm really impressed with how much improvement he's made since I saw him in Double-A two years ago." Hawkins remembers the junior Gwynn "when he was about this long," or an infant. The Hawkins and Gwynn families later vacationed together in Puerto Rico. "He has greatly improved as a player since I saw him two years ago," Hawkins said, echoing Kremblas. "That young man is a tough out. He has a much better idea at the plate. I'm impressed with him, I really am." And not just as a baseball player.

  10. Link for Ramon Aviles photo, text follows: www.floridatoday.com/apps...002/sports Managers have different goals In minors, you work your way up or take one for the team BY SCOTT BROWN FLORIDA TODAY VIERA - His tanned face and strapping build allow Gary Carter to fit comfortably into his moniker, "Kid," even at the age of 52. The St. Lucie Mets manager doesn't move as well as he did when he first got the nickname, and scars on his knees reveal just how much he abused them during a big-league playing career that spanned nearly two decades. The former catcher has had 11 knee surgeries, which make the bus rides that are a staple of minor league baseball tougher on him than most others. Maybe that is why he is giving himself another year after this one to return to the big leagues before walking away from managing. After getting as high as Triple-A as a manager, Brevard County Manatees skipper Ramon Aviles is no longer focused on getting back to the big leagues. He and Carter may be on opposite career paths but they do have something in common: both have to strike a balance between developing players and trying to win. That fine line is even trickier to walk at the high Class-A level (and the ones below it) since the importance attached to player development often influences managers' decisions. Earlier this season in Jupiter, the Manatees were nursing a two-run lead in the ninth inning when right-handed pitcher Josh Alliston allowed a base runner. With a left-handed hitter coming to the plate and southpaw Jeremy Lewis throwing in the Manatees' bullpen, the obvious move would have been for Aviles to take Alliston out of the game. Instead, he said to Brevard County pitching coach Fred Dabney, "We've got to see what Josh can do with this situation." Alliston ended up getting the final outs for the save. On Sunday, Aviles left starting pitcher Mark Rogers in the game even though the Mets roughed him up in an eventual 7-3 win. The reason Aviles stayed with Rogers longer than he would have if winning were his only concern: the Manatees are trying to build up the former first-round pick's arm strength and wanted him to throw close to 100 pitches. "If I teach the guys to play the game right and they go out and do what we teach them, the winning is going to come," said Aviles, whose team fell to 13-5 after losing 5-4 to the visiting Mets on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. "My priority is helping them develop into major league players." That is Carter's first priority as well. Mike Pelfrey, who started Monday night for the Mets, could have been pitching a perfect game and the tall right-hander still would not have been allowed to finish it. The Mets have the ninth overall pick of last year's amateur draft on a pitch count and for good reason. They gave Pelfrey, who threw 94 pitches and six innings against the Manatees, more than $3 million to sign and are protecting their investment. The handling of Pelfrey shows what it is like for skippers who manage in the present but also have to keep one eye clearly fixed on the future. Carter, who hit 324 homers during a career distinguished enough had made the Hall of Fame on his first try, does not know what the future holds for him. He makes it clear that he wants to manage in the big leagues, though he acknowledges that it probably won't happen for the organization that he helped lead to a world championship 20 years ago. Willie Randolph is in his second season managing the New York Mets and has the team off to one of the best starts in baseball. Carter, for all intents and purposes, is auditioning for a big-league managing job with another organization, though that is not how he looks at it. "First of all, I love the game and have a great passion for the game and I love to work with these kids," said Carter, who led the Mets' Gulf Coast League team to a 37-16 record last season. "Hopefully my time will come. "I would love nothing more than to lead a team to the World Series. If nothing opens up, I'll find something else to do and maybe baseball doesn't want me."

  16. Brevard County Site Game Notes: Mets edge out Manatees Mike Pelfrey struck out a season-high eight batters in six strong innings as visiting St. Lucie edged Brevard County, 5-4, on Monday. Pelfrey (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk. The right-hander kept the Manatees scoreless until the fifth inning when Carlos De La Cruz singled in Hasan Rasheed. Starter Yovani Gallardo (1-2) recorded double-digit strikeouts for the second straight start. The right-hander struck out 10 and was charged with four runs -- one earned -- on five hits and one walk in five innings for the Manatees (13-5). Shawn Bowman's RBI single in the fifth gave St. Lucie (11-6) a 4-0 lead. Yasmil Bucce and Jonathan Malo both had RBI singles in the second. Brevard County trailed 5-2 in the ninth, but rallied for two runs on pinch-hitter Steve Sollmann's two-out double off Mets reliever Rafael Cova. But Carlos Muniz came in and retired Travis Ezi on a flyout to right field to secure his fifth save. The teams conclude the three-game series at 7:00 PM (6:00 PM Central) on Tuesday. -- Eric Justic/MLB.com
  17. Lexington finally finds a way By Mark Maloney Lexington HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER Trailing West Virginia 3-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Lexington Legends looked like sure losers last night. The Legends had runners thrown out at the plate in the second and fifth innings. Then, after finally breaking through for two runs in the eighth, a botched base-running play ended the rally. Surely, this game was over. Not so. The Legends came back again in the ninth, taking advantage of two errors, to salvage a 4-3 victory over the Power. The win in the rubber game of a three-game series at Applebee's Park left Lexington with a one-game lead over Lake County in the SAL's Northern Division. "That's why we play nine innings -- you never know what's going to happen," Legends Manager Jack Lind said. "You don't run out of time in baseball. You just run out of outs. "You keep pecking away and getting guys on base, hopefully something good will happen for you." Mike Thompson started the ninth-inning rally with a one-out infield single. He went all the way to third when second baseman Kenny Holmberg booted Wladimir Sutil's grounder. Josh Flores went in to run for Thompson. And with Eric King at the plate, Sutil took off for second. King looped an opposite-field single to right, easily scoring Flores. When right fielder Lorenzo Cain bobbled the pickup of King's ball, Sutil caught sight of third-base coach Lind and kept steaming all the way home. "I never saw that," Sutil said of Cain's error. "I was looking at Jack." King, who had two of the Legends' 13 hits, made a loser of Joe Thatcher (0-2). "The guy came in with a 1-1 count that was a hard slider, and I hit it off my leg," King said. "I was thinking, next pitch he might go back to it again, so I backed off a little bit and really just fought it. It was a good pitch and, fortunately for me, I found the right spot to have it hit." West Virginia ended a road trip having surrendered 12 ninth-inning runs during the six games of the trip. King, Mitch Einertson and J.R. Towles led off the Lexington eighth with singles to load the bases. Fielder's-choice grounders by Ole Sheldon and Eli Iorg each scored a run. The rally ended when Iorg, on first, began a half-speed move toward second base, thinking Ryan Reed was called out on a checked swing. Reed did check his swing, but Iorg was in no-man's land by the time he realized, and was easily thrown out at second base. Raymar Diaz, getting a spot start in place of sore-elbowed Doug Arguello, worked five solid innings. He gave up one run, on Kenny Holmberg's second-inning homer. Garrett Murdy gave up RBI hits to Tony Festa in the sixth and Angel Salome in the eighth. Brandon Stricklen (2-0) got the win by tossing a perfect ninth inning. Lexington's Ryan Reed took second base when the Power?s Kenny Holmberg threw to home to retire Mark Ori in the second inning last night. Holmberg?s night was mixed: He homered In the second, but booted a grounder in the ninth. The Big Bangs A pair of early-inning home-plate collisions failed to knock the ball away from 6-foot-1, 220-pound Power catcher Brad Willcutt. In the second, when Ryan Reed of the Legends got hung up between first and second, Mark Ori tried to score from third. Shortstop Ryan Crew pegged the ball to Wilcutt, who withstood Ori's barrel-hard tactics. In the fifth, Mike Thompson tried to score from third on Eric King's fly ball, but left fielder Michael Brantley fired a strike to Wilcutt for a double play. http://www.kentucky.com/images/kentucky/kentucky/14420/207944849120.jpg Another Holmberg photo? 18. West Virginia Site Game Summary: NINTH INNING POWER STRUGGLES CONTINUEFor the third time during the West Virginia Power?s six game road trip, they lost a ninth inning lead as they fell to the Lexington Legends by the final score of 4-3 on Monday night at Applebee?s Park. Kenny Holmberg hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, his third of the season, to give the Power an early 1-0 advantage. Tony Festa ripped an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Power a 2-0 lead and Angel Salome brought Darren Ford in on an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning to give the Power a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the eighth the Legends scored twice. Ole Sheldon stepped in with the bases loaded and brought in a run on a fielder?s choice and Eli Iorg did the same thing two batters later to bring the Legends within a run. In the ninth inning Eric King stepped in with runners at the corners and one out. King shot a single into right center field allowing the tying run to score. Lorenzo Cain bobbled the ball in right field allowing just enough time for the winning run to score. Brandon Stricklen (2-0) earned the victory, and Joe Thatcher (0-2) obtained the loss. The Power are 7-10 after the loss and the Legends improved to 12-6 with the win. The Power will begin a three game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. 21. Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 A year later, game sane for Sain as Stars win First baseman slugs grand slam against former team By BRUCE McLELLAN Associate Sports Editor, brucem@htimes.com For the second time in 369 days, Greg Sain played at Joe Davis Stadium in a game that started before anybody's breakfast could digest as the result of a school days promotion But Monday resembled April 20, 2005, in no other way for Sain. He started as the Huntsville first baseman against Mobile a year after playing the same position for the BayBears against the Stars. On Monday, Sain spent more than 10 minutes after the game signing his autograph. Last April 20, Sain could barely remember his name after the game. He and Stars first baseman Brandon Gemoll both lay on the field dazed for about five minutes after colliding when Sain was running out a popup. "That's one of the moments in my baseball career I wish I couldn't remember," Sain said. "It's a freak play. It's never happened before." But instead of getting thumped, Sain did the thumping Monday. He hit a grand slam to left field to highlight a six-run fifth inning that powered Huntsville to an 8-4 win in front of an announced crowd of 2,903, mostly elementary school students. They may not have fully appreciated what the trade of Sain from the San Diego Padres organization to Milwaukee has meant for the Brewers' Double-A farm team. The grand slam was Sain's second in the 15 games in which he has appeared this season. "It's not very usual to have one in a season, let alone two within two weeks," Sain said with a grin. "But I'll take them if they're coming. It's a quick way to up the RBI total." He leads the Stars with 15 RBIs and six home runs - almost half of the team total of 13. He's a big boost for a team that hit only 63 home runs last year - fewest for any team in the three Double-A leagues. Sain, 26, was available to Milwaukee because San Diego was loaded with first basemen at Triple-A. "The Padres had some new management and went out and got some other players and created a little bit of a logjam for me," Sain said. "I'm really happy about the trade and happy to be with the Brewers." Ironically, Sain, whose father Tom played at Triple-A with both the Astros and Twins organizations in the 1970s, hasn't really found his rhythm at the plate. He has only five hits besides the six home runs and is batting .212. "I'd like to be more consistent," he said. "I've only had one multi-hit game all year. I've struck out more times than I should have. I wouldn't say I'm at all happy with how I've been doing. "Obviously, I'm not going to say I should be hitting more home runs. I don't know if I've ever had six home runs in 15 games to start a season." The Stars entered the bottom of the fifth Monday trailing 2-0 and with only two hits against Mobile starter Jose Oyervidez. But Ozzie Chavez hit an RBI double and Callix Crabbe a run-scoring single to tie the game before a walk to Steve Moss left the bases loaded for Sain. He wanted to make sure he hit the ball into the outfield to at least score the runner from third, but he knocked the 1-1 pitch from Oyervidez into the third row of fences in left. "In that situation with the bases loaded, the pressure really is on the pitcher," Sain said. "I was trying not to do too much. I just wanted to get a pitch up that I could drive. "It was a good day. There's a little extra incentive to do well against them." Stephen Bray (1-1) scattered four hits and struck out three in three innings of relief to get the win. Starter Jeff Housman left with tenderness in his left shoulder after two innings and will be examined by physicians today. Housman continually fell behind hitters and gave up four hits. But he allowed only one run, getting a break when left fielder Drew Anderson threw out Adam Bourassa at home when the BayBear tried to score from second on a single in the second.

  23. Final: Lexington (Astros) 4, West Virginia 3 If you were like me, and refreshed your game log for this one every couple of innings, there was a real sense of suspense, if a game log can provide such a feeling. One of the things you have to love about Will Inman is how he seemingly pitches so unfazed with runners in scoring position, something we saw going back to Helena last season. Questionable baserunning decisions by Lexington in the 2nd and 8th innings proved crucial at the time, and LF Michael Brantley's big throw saved Inman in the 5th. However, two errors in another disastrous 9th inning spell defeat for the Power -- we know that the minor leagues are all about player development, but just from an entertainment standpoint, the Brewer - Power relationship has been one of bitter disappointment from a won-loss standpoint much more often than not. Final: Huntsville 8, Mobile (Padres) 4 Greg Sain's .212 average ultra-productive, power bat just what the Brewers asked for in the pre-season trade with the Padres -- that PTBNL could be Ben Sheets at Sain's HR pace http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=797 Sain Slams Stars to Victory Greg Sain?s grand slam capped off a six-run fifth inning uprising, powering Huntsville to an 8-4 win over Mobile Monday morning at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars won their season-best third straight home game to improve to 11-8 overall and 5-4 on home soil, while the BayBears dropped to 7-12 overall and 3-6 on the road. Mobile starter Jose Oyervidez had blanked the Stars through four innings, including stranding runners at second and third base with one out in the fourth, but ran into a host of trouble in the fifth. Lou Palmisano walked to start the inning and scored when Ozzie Chavez followed with a double. Kennard Bibbs legged out a pinch-hit bunt single and Callix Crabbe singled to left to score Chavez to tie the game. Steve Moss drew a one-out walk to load the bases and Sain followed by belting a 1-1 offering over the second tier of signage in left field for his second grand slam of the season. He has hit home runs in back-to-back games against his former team and has hit six long balls in the last 13 games. Oyervidez had given up three earned runs in his first three starts of the season and in 23 innings against the Stars in three starts last year and first four frames of today?s game. It was the Stars? highest scoring inning of the season and the most runs the BayBears had permitted in any one inning this season. Moss doubled home two runs in the seventh to complete the highest scoring game for the Stars at home this season. He finished with two hits in four at-bats and pushed his hitting streak to six, matching Sain for the longest of any Stars hitter this season. Mobile plated a second inning run against Stars? starter Jeff Housman, who was taken out of the game after two frames due to a strained left shoulder. Steve Bray took over in the third and gave up a run-scoring single to Steve Baker, who went three-for-three with a walk, to score George Kottaras to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Bray went three innings in his longest outing of the year to pick up his first win, allowing a run on four hits. Gerrit Simpson followed with 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Andy Pratt allowed two unearned runs in an inning and a third of relief work. The series concludes on Tuesday night when the BayBears send southpaw Sean Thompson to the mound against Stars right-hander Khalid Ballouli. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
