  7. Final: Nashville 9, Omaha (Royals) 7 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for new Tony Gwynn photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1911 Sounds Come From Behind To Post 9-7 Win NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Nashville Sounds emerged victorious in a see-saw battle against the division-leading Omaha Royals on Wednesday evening at Greer Stadium, posting a come-from-behind 9-7 victory in a game that featured 10 extra-base hits and seven unearned runs. With the win, Nashville (8-6) pulled within a game of the first-place Royals and picked up its seventh win in its last nine contests. Sounds starter Dana Eveland, who took a no-decision after allowing five unearned runs in 5.0 innings of work, continued his strong start to the season and lowered his ERA to an impressive 1.06. The southpaw has allowed only two earned runs in 17.0 innings pitched in 2006. Tony Gwynn (3-for-5) and Chris Barnwell (3-for-4, 2 2B) paced the Sounds? 11-hit attack with three hits apiece. Nashville runners were active on the basepaths, swiping five bases in five attempts to increase their Pacific Coast League-leading total to 30 swipes in 14 games. The Sounds struck first, taking a 1-0 lead when Nelson Cruz scored on Brad Nelson?s bases-loaded, double-play groundout in the bottom of the second inning. Nashville increased the lead to 4-0 with a three-run third against Omaha starter Runelvys Hernandez. Barnwell extended his hitting streak to seven games, matching the club?s longest of the season, when he led off the inning with a double. Gwynn drove him in with an RBI single to right to up the lead to 2-0. The knock extended the outfielder?s season-best hit streak to six games. After a Jermaine Clark double, Corey Hart (1-for-4), in his second at-bat since joining the club, drove an RBI single to left to score Gwynn from third. The final run of the frame came in on a Vinny Rottino RBI groundout. Omaha rallied to grab a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth with five unearned runs off Eveland, all stemming from a dropped fly ball by rightfielder Nelson Cruz that should have ended a scoreless inning. With two on and two down, Ricky Bell lifted a fly ball down the right field line that hit Cruz square in the glove but the ball fell to the turf, allowing both runners to score. Eveland then surrendered three consecutive RBI doubles to Mike Aviles, Andres Blanco, and Kerry Robinson as the visitors grabbed the lead. The Sounds rallied to take a 9-5 lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one down, Nelson singled, stole second, and moved to third on Mark Johnson?s single, which chased Hernandez. Omaha reliever David Elder was greeted by back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Barnwell, his second two-bagger of the contest, and Gwynn, who broke a 5-5 tie by bringing home Johnson and Barnwell with his third knock of the night. After Jermaine Clark drew a walk, he and Gwynn executed a double steal then both players scored on the play following a throwing error by catcher Paul Phillips and a fielding error by third baseman Mike Aviles. AUDIO: Double Steal + Errors Net Two Runs -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...204-19.wma Justin Huber and Phillips belted back-to-back one-out solo homers off Sounds reliever Mike Meyers in the top of the eighth inning to pull within 9-7. Huber?s blast was his team-leading sixth of the year and second in two games this series. Phillips? longball was his second of the season. Meyers (1-0) picked up the victory in his initial 2006 outing with the Sounds. He allowed two runs on four hits, including two home runs, in 2 2/3 frames. Hernandez (1-2) took the loss after being tagged for six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Jared Fernandez made his Sounds debut by working the final 1 1/3 innings in perfect fashion, adding two strikeouts, to earn his first save since the 2002 season when he pitched for Louisville (AAA-Reds). The clubs continue the series with a 7 p.m. Thursday meeting, the first Thirsty Thursday of the season at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate (0-0, 5.40) toes the rubber for the Sounds to face Omaha right-hander Brian Bass (0-1, 6.55). Brad Willcutt hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the top of the third inning, to give the Power a 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning the Power opened up a 4-0 advantage on Yoho?s three-run homer, his first blast of the season. Yoho struck again in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out RBI double to give the Power a 5-0 lead. Nick Evans knocked in Hagerstown?s first run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double and Hagerstown made things very interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Suns homered twice, and for the second game in a row, they scored three times in the bottom of the ninth. 14. Final: Huntsville 7, Montgomery (Devil Rays) 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=790 Stars Flex Muscle in Win Over Biscuits Jeff Housman tossed seven sparkling innings and Steve Moss and Jeff Eure hit back-to-back home runs in a five-run fourth inning rally that carried Huntsville past Montgomery 7-1 Wednesday morning and afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium. The Stars have taken three of the first four games in the series to improve to 8-6 overall and 6-3 on the road, while the Biscuits lost for a sixth time in seven games to fall to 7-7 and into a first place tie in the South Division with Birmingham. The Stars have won eight of the last ten games between the two teams since the start of last season. Elliot Johnson opened the home first inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to eight games, advanced to third on a Wes Bankston single and scored on a base hit by Michael Coleman, who has knocked in a run in three of the four games in the series. Housman got out of further trouble by getting Chairon Isenia to bounce into an inning-ending double play, the first of four turned in the game by Huntsville. Ron Acuna and Lou Palmisano delivered consecutive one-out singles in the fourth before Moss belted the first pitch he saw from starter Chuck Tiffany over the wall in left field for his first home run and first runs batted in of the season. Eure followed by slamming the next pitch for a home run, his first long ball since Opening Day and his first run batted in since April 10. Kennard Bibbs would score later in the inning to give the Stars a 5-1 edge and their largest scoring inning of the season. Tiffany was knocked out in the fourth and was charged with the loss after giving up all five runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. Eure delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning to complete the scoring and knock in three runs in a game for a second time this season. Seven different Stars hitters scored a single run in the game and every batter collected at least one hit, save for Callix Crabbe, who failed to reach base with a hit or walk for the first time in 13 starts. Housman retired 14 hitters in a row from the second inning into the seventh before Coleman singled with one out. He was erased when Isenia bounced into his second twin-killing of the day. The Huntsville hurler earned his first win of the season by allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven. Housman has fanned seven batters in two of his three starts and has struck out 18 in 18 innings of work so far this year. Steve Bray worked two scoreless frames and ended the game by getting Coleman to bounce into a double play with the bases loaded. The Stars will send right-hander Khalid Ballouli to the mound on Thursday night in the final game of the series against Biscuits? right-hander Chris Flinn. Coverage of the game begins at 7:05 PM central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Brevard County Site Game Summary: Cardinals blank Manatees Terry Evans' first-inning three-run blast lifted Palm Beach over Brevard County, 4-0, in the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday. Evans drove in all four runs for the Cardinals (8-5) and continued his dominance against the Manatees this season. The 24-year-old Georgia native added a sacrifice fly in the eighth and is hitting .391 with four homers and 14 RBIs in six games against against Brevard County, compared to .271 with just one RBI in his other seven games. Blake Hawksworth (2-0) held the Manatees to three hits in six innings and did not allow a run in notching his second win. Mike Sillman came in with two on and two out in the ninth and was able to induce a Carlos Corporan pop-up to earn his third save. Yovani Gallardo (1-1) surrendered three runs on two hits in five innings in the loss. He was overpowering, however, striking out 12 Cardinals. The Manatees had two big chances to get on the board, loading the bases in the fourth and eighth innings. But, Freddy Parejo grounded into a double-play to end the fourth and Ryan Braun grounded out to the pitcher to finish the eighth. Parejo and Braun were two of eight Manatees with a single in the game. Michael Ferris smacked a pair of doubles for the Cardinals. 22. Link, text follows: www.montgomeryadvertiser....90376/1002 Roasted umps: The Huntsville Stars pointed at two plays that could have changed the outcome of the Biscuits' 6-1 win Tuesday. One was an apparent blown call by an umpire. A foul call on an apparent home run by Huntsville's Greg Sain had the Stars and Biscuits talking about the replacement umpires. The regular minor-league umpires are on strike. While they're out, teams are using local amateur-level umpires. "We know they're not professional guys and we tell our guys to try to remember that," Huntsville manager Don Money said. "We just have to play the game like it is." Minor League Baseball has ordered its teams to not identify the replacement umpires. The regular umpires didn't work spring training games and have been on strike since the start of the season. "I never thought I would say this, but I can't wait until we get the (regular) umpires back," Biscuits left fielder Michael Coleman said. "We still have to play ball." Coleman said he hit a ball at Jacksonville that hit the foul pole and was called foul. Money described the umpires that worked Huntsville's season-opening series at Mississippi as "rough." The Stars even had a play at home last week where second baseman Callix Crabbe wanted to dispute a safe call on a force play. Crabbe instead motioned for Money to come argue. "I went out and the umpire told me that (Crabbe's) right foot wasn't on the bag," Money said. "I said, 'Well, that's because we teach them to take that throw with their left foot on it.'" On Tuesday, Money demonstratively argued the foul call on Sain's ball. Sain struck out on the next pitch. "Definitely fair," said Sain, who homered in the first two games of the series. "The minor-league umpires are in the minor leagues because they're not good enough to be in the big leagues yet, just like the players," Sain said. "(The replacements) are trying, but they're not at this level. "The calls they are making are making things difficult for both the position players and pitchers." Had it been a home run, Huntsville would have trailed only 4-3. The argument was the first noticeable spat involving the replacement umpires at Riverwalk Stadium. "It was fair. He missed it," Money said. "He told me it went to the left of the pole. I said, 'You're wrong, you're flat out wrong, you missed it.'" Other play: The Stars had another play that gave Montgomery three runs in the second inning. Biscuits outfielder Jason Pridie hit a fly ball to left with two outs and the bases loaded. Stars left fielder Drew Anderson took a few steps in and then had to leap to try for the catch. The ball clipped off Anderson's glove and three runs scored on the error. "It's amazing how one play here or there can change an entire game," Sain said. "If Anderson catches that ball and they make the right call on my hit, we're up 3-1. Two plays like that and the game is completely different."

  24. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Royals end Sounds' win streak at 4 By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer After losing three of four games at Omaha to open the season, the Nashville Sounds looked poised to reverse their fortunes when the Royals arrived yesterday at Greer Stadium for the opener of a four-game series. No such luck. Omaha, which leads the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division, extended its cushion to two games over the Sounds with a 6-2 victory. For Nashville, the loss stopped a four-game winning streak as the Sounds opened the home portion of their schedule by sweeping Oklahoma. "I don't think we played badly," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "Our approach at the plate, against (Omaha starter) J.P. Howell wasn't good enough. Without guys in scoring position, our approach was pretty good. But we'd get guys in scoring position and we'd start swinging at balls in the dirt, early in the count." Nashville, which had 56 hits against Oklahoma and 38 extra-base hits through its first 12 games, managed just seven singles against Howell (3-0) and relievers Frank Brooks and Adam Bernero. "He's good," Sounds first baseman Brad Nelson ? who had two of the seven hits ? said of Howell. "But we've seen him before. We know what he has. He just executes, all the time." The Royals staked Howell to a second-inning lead with a Justin Huber solo home run off Nashville spot starter Brett Evert, and Aaron Guiel added a fourth-inning leadoff homer in an eventual three-run rally. That would be enough to doom the Sounds, as Nashville scored a run in the fourth and another in the fifth but left three runners in scoring position in both innings. The Sounds couldn't push a second run across following a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the fourth. "It's awesome to get two-out RBI, but that was a tough situation," Nelson said. Guiel hit his second homer of the night off Mitch Stetter , a two-out, two-run shot in the ninth . "Those guys did a good job," Kremblas said of Evert ? pressed into duty as Zach Jackson was scratched ? Jason Kershner and Stetter. "We made mistake pitches and (Omaha) took care of them." What they said: "Today's over; we've got tomorrow. We did some things right. We were asking a lot from our relievers, and they did a pretty good job." ? Nelson.
  25. Injury update: Nashville outfielder Dave Krynzel will likely miss the next couple of days after colliding with the wall in right-centerfield during Monday's win against Oklahoma. However, X-rays were negative on Krynzel's collarbone, which he broke in an off-field accident during the offseason. -- the Tennessean
