Southern League Player of the Week Honors: Enrique Cruz, Huntsville 7 G, 25 AB, 6 R, 9 H, 1 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .360 AVG, .640 SLG, 0 SB Stars shortstop Enrique Cruz extended his hitting streak to 10 games before going 0-for-3 in his last game of the week. The 23-year-old shortstop collected a base hit in the first two games of the week before cranking his 11th roundtripper of the year in a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Birmingham on July 6. He had his biggest game of the week the next night, when he reached base four times, with a single, a home run and two walks, while driving in a pair of runs. The 6-foot-1 Dominican, who made his Major League debut with the Brewers in 2003, went 2-for-4 with an RBI in each of his next two games before seeing his hitting streak snapped on Sunday.

Final: Ogden (Dodgers) 9, Helena 8 Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...205_01.txt Defensive struggles, errors lead to Brewers loss By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer Juan Rivera hit a leadoff home run to open Monday's game between the Helena Brewers and the Ogden Raptors. That hit was a sign of things to come. The first two innings of the contest lasted over an hour, and when the nine-inning bout ended, Ogden was clutched to a narrow 9-8 lead. The game marked the beginning of a four-game homestand between the two ball clubs, with the Brewers going into the meeting three games in the lead in the Pioneer League North, and the Raptors three up in the South. "We didn't play too well defensively," said Helena skipper Ed Sedar. "And you have to give credit to Ogden for taking advantage of that." Helena, who out hit the Raptors 11-9 in the game, also committed six errors, allowing for three unearned runs. "We made six physical mistakes," said Sedar. "But I'd rather we do that than play well and make six mental mistakes. We can play better than we did tonight." After Rivera's homer, Ogden walked the bases loaded and scored again on an error from Helena shortstop Scott McKnight. Pitcher Ryan Marion walked in a third run before the Brewers turned a double play to get out of the inning. McKnight committed three errors in the game, but made up for it at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. The Helena slugger crossed the plate on both hits, and drove in a run with the triple. Agustin Septimo was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, and catcher Angel Salome was 3-for-5. After five innings, the game was tied at 6-6 but in the sixth, Ogden's Russ Mitchell doubled to score run number seven. With no outs and a runner in scoring position, the Helena infield took the opportunity to make up for the error-filled night. First baseman Brad Willcutt made a diving stop for out number one, McKnight made a wheeling midair throw for number two, and Septimo made a leaping catch at second to rob B.J. Richmond of an extra base hit. The two teams will face off again tonight at 7:05 p.m (8:05 Central). Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Bradley waits for his little all-star Pitcher heads to Mobile while wife's due date nears By PAUL GATTIS Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com The consolation to David Bradley's solitude is that he'll soon have another family member to attend his next all-star game. Or, hey, maybe the consolation is that the Huntsville Stars right-hander has this problem in the first place. Part-time starter, part-time reliever, Bradley has been round-the-clock effective this season for the Stars and earned a spot in the Southern League all-star game Wednesday night. But the only faces in Mobile's Hank Aaron Stadium familiar to Bradley may well be Dana Eveland, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Vinny Rottino, fellow all-stars from Huntsville. On this big night, Bradley will have no one in the stands sharing in his joy. His family is back home in Parkersburg, W.Va., and was unable to drop life on a week's notice and scurry down to the coast - Hurricane Dennis or no Hurricane Dennis. Bradley's wife, Julia, is eight months pregnant with their second child and spends about 26 hours a day chasing around their first child - 3 1/2-year-old Isabelle. But spare the tears. "To be honest, I've been playing long enough and I've been away from my family most of those years that I'm kind of used to it," Bradley said. "It's disappointing that everybody is so far away and they're not able to come. "You always wish they could be there at the bigger moments in your career and life. But I'm a little used to it and the things that come with the baseball life. I'll make it." If fans truly love the underdog, though, then Bradley's the perfect candidate for adoption. First, he was a replacement when the North team lost players through the usual attrition of promotions to Triple-A or the majors. Second, Bradley is a graduate of the independent leagues - that baseball wilderness where dreams are clutched even as the fingernails are losing their grip on life as a professional. Teams in independent baseball have no affiliation with a major league organization unlike most minor leagues. In fact, that's just how Bradley described this milestone - an all-star in "affiliated baseball." "It was a shock," Bradley said. "I never expected to make an all-star team in affiliated baseball. So it was definitely a big surprise when they told me. Granted, it was as a replacement, but it was still a big surprise. "It's kind of an honor because there are so many good players in this league from every team. It's pretty special to get to be a part of that." Forget that Bradley spent the 2002-03 seasons with Washington of the Frontier League - one of those independent leagues also known as unaffiliated baseball. In 2005, he's put together undeniable all-star numbers. He's 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 54 1/3 innings. He's made 26 appearances - all but five out of the bullpen - but is currently in the starting rotation after injuries sidelined starters Manny Parra and Dennis Sarfate. Bradley has allowed less than one hit per inning (43) while striking out almost one per inning (48). Bradley attributed his success this season to his vagabond role on the pitching staff to last year at Single-A High Desert when he faced a similar situation. But making adjustments may well be one of Bradley's strengths. The due date for the Bradleys' first son, Roman, is Aug. 15. The tentative plan right now, though, is for labor to be induced about two weeks early during a long homestand so Bradley can escape for a day or two for the birth. "It's hard for me to not be able to help with family things at home," Bradley said. No doubt, though, that when the highlight of Bradley's summer takes place - in a West Virginia hospital, not a baseball game in Mobile - solitude is one adjective that can't be used.

Final: Huntsville 2, Mississippi (Braves) 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for Brad Nelson photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=663 Nelson Nudges Stars Past BravesBrad Nelson singled home the game-winning run in the eighth inning and Ty Taubenheim was impressive in his double-A debut in Huntsville?s 2-1 victory over Mississippi Monday night in the final game of a four-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars grabbed three of the four games to improve to 11-9 in the second half and move back into a tie for first place in the North Division with Carolina after the Mudcats 2-1 win over West Tenn. The Stars had been swept in a four-game set in their last visit to Pearl and have now won six of the 18 games played between the teams this season. Ben Van Iderstine led off the eighth inning against new Braves pitcher Steve Kent with a pinch-hit single but was thrown out at second base on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Tony Gwynn, Jr. before Kennard Bibbs followed with a single. Vinny Rottino grounded into a force play at second moving Gwynn to third base and Nelson followed with a single past a diving Scott Thorman at first base to knock in the go-ahead run. Nelson has hit safely in 10 of the 12 games he has played in with the Stars and driven in a dozen runs. Nelson walked to open the second inning, moved to second base on a single by Brandon Gemoll and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Enrique Cruz, his second of the season and first since April 13 at Jacksonville. Callix Crabbe then hit a ground ball to Thorman, who went to a knee to field it on the backhand and could not. The ball got past him out into right field to allow Nelson to score and Gemoll to move to third base. Crabbe picked up a run batted in and the run charged to starter Paul Bush went in the books as unearned. Jeff Winchester struck out and Taubenheim grounded out to end the inning. Taubenheim retired the side in order in the first two innings before giving up a run in the third. Gregor Blanco singled, moved to third base on a hit and run single by Luis Hernandez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wes Timmons. Taubenheim left the bases loaded in the fourth by retiring Luis Hernandez on a fly ball and stranded a runner at second base with two outs in the fifth and sixth innings. The game was delayed 33 minutes between the top and bottom halves of the seventh by an unexpected rain shower. Taubenheim was lifted after six innings and did not return when play resumed in the home seventh. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits, walked one and struck out four. Khalid Ballouli retired the side in order in the seventh, Mike Meyers worked a scoreless eighth and Jerome Gamble slammed the door in the ninth by retiring all three hitters he faced to earn his second save of the series and fourth of the season. The Stars held the Braves to two runs or fewer in their three wins and won two games by one run. The Stars resume play after the all-star break Friday night at home against Carolina with right-hander Glenn Woolard matching up against Mudcats? right-hander Yorman Bazardo. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005071112/ Former Miami (Fla.) recruits were bound by destiny Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Ryan Braun and Mark Rogers were bound to be teammates some day. It was fate. Just consider the circumstances. When Rogers, a highly regarded pitcher for the West Virginia Power, was coming out of high school, he was signed, sealed and all but delivered to the University of Miami (Fla.). But, then, when the Milwaukee Brewers selected Rogers with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2004 Major League Draft, he said goodbye to south Florida. And, consequently, to Braun. "One of the reasons I was going to Miami is because they get great players like Ryan," said Rogers. Braun was the Hurricanes' slugging third baseman. But did Rogers' decision to start his pro career stop he and Braun from becoming teammates? No. It just delayed it one season, that's all. It still seemed inevitable, though. Especially when the Brewers took (who else?) Braun with the (what else?) fifth overall pick of the 2005 MLB Draft in June. After a brief stop in rookie league ball in Helena, Braun was promoted to the Power late last week and, now, he and Rogers finally are teammates. Which means in a little over a year, the duo has gone from prospective college teammates at Miami to multi-millionaires in the Mountain State. "It's crazy," said the 19-year old Rogers, who received a $2.2 million signing bonus from the Brewers last season. "But it worked out real well actually. It's a pleasure to play with a guy with his ability. It's awesome to know that someone like that is playing third base for you every time you go out on the mound." Now, the pair is making up for lost time. "Mark took a visit (to Miami) and I didn't meet him, but actually I'm living with him now," said the 21-year old Braun, who received a $2.45 million bonus to sign after hitting .388 with 18 homers and 76 RBI as a junior at Miami. "He's a great kid and I think we'll have a good relationship. We definitely have a lot in common and even though he's a lot younger than me, I feel like he's someone that I can look to for some advice." And for some idle chat about what could have been. "He's a good guy," said Rogers, after the Power's 2-1 win over Hagerstown Sunday at Appalachian Power Park. "He moved in with us (along with reliever Justin Barnes) and he's been a pleasure to be around. It's going to be good to get to know him and play with him. "We also talk Miami baseball a little bit. Actually I have a Miami hitch cover on the back of my truck and he said, ?I like the looks of that,' so I think we'll be all right." Power Manager Ramon Aviles agrees. In fact, he believes Braun is going to be more than all right. Considering Aviles was a Major League middle infielder for four seasons with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, he knows a good infielder when he sees one. And he sees one in Braun. "He's looks very good at third base," said Aviles. "He's got good actions at third, he's got a strong arm and he has good hands." Braun, along with shortstop Alcides Escobar, second baseman Hernan Iribarren and first baseman Grant Richardson, form a pretty solid infield for the Power. "We have a good infield," said Aviles. "They're human beings and they're going to make mistakes, but they won't make mistakes too often. "(Alcides) Escobar and (Hernan) Iribarren have been doing a great job," said Aviles, of his two All-Star middle infielders. "Richardson has improved a lot defensively since spring training and has improved a lot with the bat lately. "We've got a good infield, including Josh Murray at third. He's been struggling at the plate a little lately, but we're going to work with him and get him some at-bats."

Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005071115/ Power's Gallardo shuts down Hagerstown bats Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter West Virginia Power starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo doesn't mind sharing. However, at times, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Texas native also can be down-right stingy. On Sunday at Appalachian Power Park, the Hagerstown Suns got a good look at the latter, as Gallardo gobbled up both innings and Suns hitters during a 2-1 Power win. West Virginia improved to 7-10, while a crowd of 2,629 watched on a near perfect day for baseball. But Gallardo's performance was even more impressive than the weather, as the right-hander tossed eight innings of two-hit, one-run baseball while improving his record to 3-3. Gallardo, who won his last start against Lexington by allowing just two runs and six hits in six innings, lowered his earned run average to 3.42. He also became the first Power starting pitcher to throw eight innings during an outing this season. Gallardo's best performance of the year came in his fourth start without the handicaps of innings restrictions or being in tandem with another starting pitcher. "The last four times out, he's not been in tandem with anybody," said Power pitcher coach John Curtis. "Since he's gone out on his own, he's struggled a little bit. "The first two times out, he didn't make it through the fifth and there was some concern as to whether we'd done it too soon. But today he demonstrated what he's capable of doing." For Gallardo, there was no worry about a premature departure from tandem pitching. Instead, his worry and work went toward a delivery flaw. "In the first couple of starts, I was having a little bit of trouble with my delivery," said Gallardo, a second-round pick in the 2004 draft. "I think that was the problem. I just worked on it in the pen and today it worked out great. "It's one of those things where fixing the little problem in my delivery helped out a lot. The last couple of starts, I felt there was just something missing. I just worked to get it back. "I'd say this was my best outing." Curtis agreed that Sunday's performance was Gallardo's finest outing to date. "He's been in a little funk as of late, pitching behind all the time," said Curtis. "Today he was out in front and had probably the best curveball he's had in his last four or five starts." Gallardo allowed only a one-out single in the first and a two-out, RBI double in the eighth, while striking out five and walking two on 88 pitches. "I just tried to keep the ball down and let them put it in play," said Gallardo. "I wanted to throw as few pitches as possible, that was my plan." At the plate for the Power, Alcides Escobar and Hasan Rasheed each had two hits, but the hero was first baseman Grant Richardson. Richardson had two hits and two RBI, including a game-winning, two-out, two-strike double in the eighth inning. "I'd hit off the guy (Bo Bowman) once before and I knew he had a pretty good sinker," said Richardson of his game winner. "I was expecting that and just trying to work up the middle with it and I got lucky enough to hit one right down the line." After an off-day today, the Power will begin a four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws Tuesday in Lakewood, N.J. The Power returns home on July 18.

Huntsville Site Game Summary: Braves Near Perfection in Win Over StarsChuck James tossed six perfect innings and knocked in a run and Mississippi kept Huntsville hitless for 7 2/3 innings in an 8-0 win Sunday afternoon and evening at Trustmark Park in a steady, and sometimes heavy, rain generated by Hurricane Dennis. The Braves improved to 9-10 in the second half and won for the 12th time in 17 games against the Stars, who dropped to 10-9 in the half and into a second place tie with Carolina one half game behind West Tenn, who edged the Mudcats 4-3 earlier in the day. James got all the run support he would need in the first inning, when the Braves tallied four times against Stars? starter David Bradley and knocked him out of the game after a 40-pitch frame. Wes Timmons was hit in the back by Bradley?s first pitch, moved to third base on a double by Onil Joseph and stayed there when Josh Burrus grounded out. Scott Thorman was intentionally passed to load the bases for Jonathan Schuerholz but the stategy backfired when Schuerholz singled to center field to chase home Timmons and Joseph to put the home team ahead 2-0. Gregor Blanco then reached on an infield single to third base and when first baseman Brandon Gemoll could not scoop Vinny Rottino?s low throw, Thorman scored and Schuerholz advanced to third. Josh Arteaga capped the rally with a run-scoring ground out. Bradley?s one inning effort match Ryan Costello?s one inning stint on June 26 as the shortest outing for a Stars? starting pitcher this season. James fanned two in the first, one in the second, the side in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth and sixth innings to match a season-high with 11 strikeouts, set June 24 against Carolina. The left-hander went six innings for the eighth time in 12 starts, the longest he has gone in any appearance, and improved to 6-1. Mississippi has won 10 of the 12 games started by the 23-year old southpaw. Jason Richardson retired the side in order in the seventh before walking Brad Nelson to open the eighth inning. Enrique Cruz bounced into a double play and Brandon Gemoll followed with a line drive double over the head of Joseph in right field for the first and only Huntsville hit. Ben Van Iderstine lined out to right for the final out of the inning and Jay Powell retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the 10th shutout thrown at the Stars this season. Huntsville?s one hit was a season-low and the visitors sent 28 batters to the plate, one more than the minimum, as the Braves yielded a season-low one hit. The Braves added a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring against Andy Pratt, Costello and Keith Stamler. The series wraps up Monday night with right-hander Ty Taubenheim making his double-A debut for the Stars against Braves right-hander Paul Bush, weather permitting. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
