Final: Helena 9, Billings (Reds) 4 It's too bad many of the H-Crew's games won't be online audio-wise -- these guys have guaranteed entertainment value... Helena Box Score: Brewer pitchers strike out 16, walk only two; draft-and-follow from 2004 Josh Louis has now made two very strong relief appearances and is shaping up as a defacto closer, although others will obviously get their turn based on workload; Charlie Fermaint iced it with his second HR on the season, a three-run shot in the 9th; Darren Ford as advertised, and may be the most exciting player in the system at the moment in terms of sheer "wow" appeal -- on base four more times tonight, and beat out a grounder for a base hit based purely on his "80" ranking speed factor... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_bilrok_1 Helena Game Log: Kind of a nightmarish second inning for Robbie Wooley, although he wasn't hit hard necessarily; after the second inning, only two Mustangs reached base... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_bilrok_1 -

West Virginia Site Game Summary: RICHARDSON'S 6TH HOMER NOT ENOUGH IN POWER LOSSSalisbury, MD ? On Thursday night Grant Richardson became the team leader in home runs when he hit his sixth home run of the season in the top of the first inning, but it was not enough to top the Delmarva Shorebirds who went on to beat the Power by the final score of 5-4. Richardson?s sixth home run of the season was a two-run shot, which gave the Power a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Arturo Rivas delivered a two-out, two-run base hit to tie the game. Later in the inning Juan Gutierrez drove in Rivas on an RBI single to give the Shorebirds a 3-2 lead. Gutierrez delivered again in the bottom of the third with his second RBI single of the game putting the Shorebirds on top 4-2. Tony Festa brought the Power within a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single to make it a 4-3 ballgame. In the top of the fifth Hernan Iribarren tied the game at 4-4 on an RBI single. The Shorebirds regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Jason Fransz RBI double. Kevin Hart (4-6) earned the victory, Trent Baysinger (2) earned the save and Brian Montalbo (1-4) obtained the loss. The Power fall to 3-4 in the second half with the loss and the Shorebirds improve to 4-3 with the win. The Power will continue the series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night. The Power will throw RHP Mark Rogers (0-5, 4.67) and the Shorebirds will counter with LHP Carlos Perez (5-5, 3.64). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). -

Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 9, Huntsville 6 Huntsville Box Score: Brad Nelson back in a comfort zone? On base in all five plate appearances, three extra-base hits and a triple shy of the cycle; Vinny Rottino up over .300 and slugging is fine, even with three singles tonight -- only 18 walks thus far, though; the leadoff spot hasn't agreed with Tony Gwynn, as Huntsville stats guru David Wesier has pointed out; Manny Parra found way too much of the plate tonight -- performance-wise, Dana Eveland is starting to separate himself a bit from his fellow lefty... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wtdaax_1 Huntsville Game Log: Two-out bases-loaded threats in the first, but Enrique Cruz was retired; only one run scored in the Huntsville 3rd, when the club stranded three again... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wtdaax_1 -

Who is this Hammond guy twirling for Helena? 9 Ks in 3 innings?!?! Holy schneikies is that a typo? At one point, 6th round lefty Steve Hammond (Long Beach State) struck out nine of ten, and eight in a row -- the Billings announcer referred to him as Helena's Sandy Koufax; in 11 IP, Hammond has zero walks and 18 K's and an ERA of 0.00 (three unearned runs)... In progress: Helena 5, Billings (Reds) 4, after eight innings Angel Salome with the go-ahead HR; more on this one later -- a good listen... -

Final: Nashville 6, Memphis (Cardinals) 3 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Nelson Cruz looking good in his Stars uniform, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1663 Sounds 'Cruz' Past Redbirds, Win 6-3NASHVILLE ? New Sounds outfielder Nelson Cruz belted an opposite-field two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel Nashville to a 6-3 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. With the win, Nashville (44-37) increased its lead over the Redbirds to a season-high 3 ½ games in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. The victory was the Sounds? 12th this season in games that they trailed in the seventh inning or later. Cruz, making his Nashville debut after being promoted from Double-A Huntsville on Wednesday, enjoyed a strong evening, going 2-for-4 with a pair of extra-base hits and three RBIs. Memphis center fielder Skip Schumaker led off the game with his fifth home run of the season, a solo homer to left off Sounds starter Gary Glover. The Redbirds doubled the lead with an unearned run in the fourth when Scott Seabol scored on an RBI single from John Nelson. Redbirds catcher Cody McKay slugged his first longball of the season in the top of the fifth off Glover to extend the visitors? lead to 3-0. Nashville jumped on the board in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back doubles by rehabbing Russell Branyan and new Sound Cruz, whose RBI two-bagger off Memphis starter Bill Pulsipher was his first knock in a Nashville uniform and made it a 3-1 contest. The Sounds exploded for three runs off Pulsipher in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 4-3 lead. Third baseman Chris Barnwell pulled Nashville within a run at 3-2 with an RBI double into the left field corner that scored Corey Hart, whose inning-opening single extended his hitting streak to nine games. Cruz followed with his first home run in a Sounds uniform, an opposite-field two-run shot to right-center that propelled the Sounds into the lead. The roundtripper was the outfielder?s 17th of the season, following a team-leading 16 with Double-A Huntsville. Audio Link of Nelson Cruz's HR: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-30.mp3 Hart, who finished 2-for-4 to record his team-leading 26th multi-hit game of the year, padded the Sounds? lead with a one-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth that made it 6-3. Nashville reliever Clint Weibl (1-2) earned his first victory of the season and it came against the team with which he spent parts of six seasons from 1998-2003. The right-hander tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Pulsipher (2-3) took the loss after surrendering four runs over his seven frames of work. Jose Capellan extended his scoreless innings streak as a reliever to 11 frames as he recorded his fourth save after closing the contest by recording the final four outs. Sounds starter Glover, who allowed two earned runs in six innings, hurled his third consecutive quality start but took his third straight no-decision. The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Friday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (4-6, 4.17) takes the hill for Nashville to face Memphis right-hander Chris Gissell (6-5, 2.90). It will be Turn Back The Clock Day at Greer Stadium. Both teams will wear replica uniforms of those worn by baseball players from their respective cities during the late 1800s. Final: Brevard County 4, St. Lucie (Mets) 0 Brevard County Site Game Summary: TY CRUISES, MANATEES STAY HOT VIERA, FL ? Ty Taubenheim whiffed 12 Mets and allowed only three hits while the offense got him all the support he would need as the Manatees swam past the Mets 4-0 Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium taking over sole possession of first place in the FSL East. Taubenheim, who was just named Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, strolled through seven innings of work striking out the side in the fourth inning to pick up his tenth win of the year. Ty is now 10-2 with an ERA of just 2.61 in 15 starting appearances. Nic Slack would come in and pitch two innings to preserve the shutout and notch his third save of the year. But the starting pitching, which has been strong all season, is not the only thing winning games for the Manatees. Brevard batsmen collected nine hits while scoring four runs in support of Taubenheim and Slack. Ozzie Chavez started off the run support with a lead-off double in the sixth and would score on an Adam Heether's sac-fly after he was moved to third on a ground out. Heether was followed by a single by Lou Palmisano who is hitting .368 in his last five games. A wild pitch would move Lou to second and he was brought home on an RBI double by Jeff Eure putting the ?Tees up 2-0. It was all the offense they would need but they did look to add some cushion in the bottom of the eighth. Heether ripped a one-out drive to center that he would leg into a double to put him in scoring position for Palmisano. Lou would answer with a line shot to the left field corner that would score Heether and put him on third with a triple. Eure followed him up with his second RBI of the game on a single to center that allowed Palmisano to score easily. The Manatees look to stay hot against the St. Lucie Mets on Friday with the final game of their three game series starting at 7:00 (6:00 Central). Tim Dillard looks to continue his recent success as he takes the hill for Brevard. Dillard is 2-0 and has not allowed a run while striking out 11 in his last two outings. Brevard County Box Score: Five of nine Manatee hits for extra-bases; it would be nice if Lou Palmisano could maintain his recent hot streak for an extended period; Ty Taubenheim had struck out only 59 in 93 innings coming into this one, so tonight's performance was unusually dominant in that regard... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_breafx_1 Brevard County Game Log: Nick Slack retired Jonathan Slack to end the game -- any relation? www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_breafx_1 -

Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds' rivalry with Redbirds finally here PCL schedule finally brings Nashville and Memphis together for a four-game series beginning tonight By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer If you expected the Nashville Sounds to have already played their nearest Pacific Coast League rival, Memphis, by this juncture of the schedule, then you're probably not all that familiar with the PCL. "It is odd, no doubt," said Dave Chase, president/general manager of the Memphis Redbirds. "But the PCL is odd in and of itself." Odd, yet consistent. Three other sets of divisions rivals, each located less than three hours apart, went fairly deeply into June before meeting or still have yet to meet. Tacoma and Portland played for the first time on June 13, Omaha and Iowa on June 25. Sacramento and Fresno don't meet for the first time until July 8. The 144-game PCL schedule finally brings Nashville and Memphis together for a four-game series beginning tonight at Greer Stadium. It is the 81st game for the Sounds, the 80th for the Redbirds. While admitting the schedule is full of quirks, PCL President Branch Rickey III said it is so for a number of reasons. "The July 4 break does have an impact," he said. "The College World Series (which forces Omaha into 16 consecutive road dates) has a big impact. Doing our in-division and out-of-division travel ... all those are packed into certain times of the year. "Someday down the road, if the College World Series wasn't such a factor, we might have a greater ability to loosen up some dates as far as playing some of those closer rivals. There are so many factors that come to bear that it's very difficult to appreciate all of them that do come into play." Although it may appear more feasible to spread out the series against close geographic rivals, Rickey, Chase and Sounds GM Glenn Yaeger all agree it may play to some teams' advantage to compress meetings into the later portion of the schedule. "Ideally, I'd think you'd want ? in a real horse race ? to play your closest rivals late, so you can come down to a barnburner of a finish," Rickey said. Following this weekend's four-game series, the Sounds play host to Memphis again after the all-star break. The two teams also play a pair of four-game sets in Memphis in August. "It sets up great for the second half," said Yaeger, whose team comes into tonight with a 2½-game lead over Memphis in the American Conference's Northern Division race. "It's great to be playing your in-state rival so much down the stretch and battling for first place." Yaeger's view of the Memphis games contributing to a spirited second-half race, though, are the views of someone with a talent for making lemonade out of lemons. "Memphis is one of the few geographic rivalries we can have, being in the PCL," he said. "It always helps attendance and interest when we play them. I'd rather play them on a more consistent basis. I think our fans would prefer to see teams that have a geographic relevance to Nashville. "If I made out the schedule, we'd be playing Memphis, Louisville, Indianapolis, Toledo, Columbus, Richmond and Iowa." Of those teams, only two are members of the PCL. The remaining five are in the International League, which begs another question: Is it time for Nashville and Memphis to consider a move to the IL? "I don't make that decision," Yaeger said. "I think our fans would prefer that. We're all about pleasing our fans. Hopefully we're always looking to enhance our relationship with Major League Baseball and our fans, and hopefully that's something we'd seriously look at." As for the matter at hand, Chase chooses not to get too caught up in when his Redbirds play whom. "I try not to burn too many brain cells worrying about the schedule," he said. "Maybe the fans notice it, but at the end of the day, I know we'll play them 16 times and we'll see what happens." Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. Link while active, text follows: www.billingsgazette.com/i...stangs.inc Mustangs win 6th straight; hand Helena 1st loss of year By BILL BIGHAUS Of The Billings Gazette Staff Helena came into Cobb Field Wednesday night as the hottest team in the Pioneer League, but Billings is now a little hotter. The Mustangs, in posting their sixth straight victory, rallied from a 3-0 deficit, taking advantage of three Helena errors and scoring five unearned runs en route to winning 6-4 against the previously unbeaten Brewers. Billings, 7-1, is off to its best start since the 2001 Mustangs started 8-1. Helena dropped to 7-1. "So far pitching and defense have definitely been our strengths," Jamie Langham, Billings' designated hitter, said of the Mustangs' sizzling start. "We've been swinging the bats pretty well, too. We've been getting some clutch hits, but for the most part it has been our defense and our pitching that has been carrying us." The Mustangs had four errors on Wednesday night, but some clutch pitching in relief by Aaron Garrison and Jose Rojas helped Billings overcome its blunders. Garrison and Rojas scattered three hits in four shutout innings and struck out five. With the Mustangs leading 5-4 in the top of the eighth, Rojas also chipped in a defensive gem after entering the game with one out and Helena runners situated at first and third. The Brewers' Charlie Fermaint, however, promptly hit a ground ball back to Rojas and the right-hander started a clutch 1-6-3 double play. Billings added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Jose Ronda singled to center, was sacrificed to second by Chris Denove and went to third on a passed ball. After fouling off an attempted squeeze bunt, No. 9 hitter Kenny Lewis lofted a sacrifice fly to shallow left field and Ronda beat the throw as he slid across home plate. Rojas, after walking the first batter he faced in the ninth, retired the next three Helena hitters for his third save of the young season. "We were out-hit and we made more errors than they did, but we did make a couple of big plays towards the end that we needed to make defensively and we put a lot of pressure on their defense by just running out balls hard and playing the game the way you're supposed to," said Mustangs' manager Rick Burleson. "It might have been one of those games that we didn't necessarily win -- they might have lost. "But our guys did not quit down 3-0. They battled, battled, battled and the next thing you know we got the lead and our bullpen held it. That was nice to see, for sure." Garrison, the third of four Billings pitchers on the night, collected his first win of the season. He pitched the sixth and seventh innings before giving way to Rojas in the eighth. "The guys threw strikes," Langham observed. "Rojas got us out of a big jam and we had a couple of timely hits. That was basically it." Langham was responsible for two of Billings' six hits - including a run-scoring double in the fourth inning. Helena entered the game with a team batting average of .356. The Brewers whacked 11 hits against Billings, but also stranded 11 runners. "We knew they had some guys that can swing the bat and that they would probably score some runs," Langham said. "Fortunately we just kept them from scoring. They had a lot of base runners, but somehow we stranded them. "This is a big series and we like playing good teams." Helena poked three doubles, while three of Billings' six hits were bunt singles. The Mustangs also had a couple of sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly. "We're not really a power team, so a lot of times we have to manufacture runs," noted Langham. The Mustangs trailed 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings, but went ahead for keeps 5-3 by scoring four runs on one hit and three Helena errors in the bottom of the fourth. After Eric Eymann tripled in a run in the third inning for Billings to make it a 3-1 contest, Jordan Belcher started the fourth inning for the Mustangs by reaching base on an error by Helena shortstop Michael Bell. Belcher moved to second on a passed ball and then came home on Langham's double to the left-field wall to whittle the gap to 3-2. Helena brought in 6-foot-9 Eric Thomas to relieve starter Derek Miller, and he walked Ronda and hit Denove to load the bases. Lewis struck out, but Brandon Roberts brought Langham racing home with the tying run by hitting into a fielder's choice. After second baseman Agustin Septimo flipped the ball to shortstop Bell to force out Denove at second on Roberts' grounder, Bell's attempt to double Roberts off at first resulted in a wild throw. Ronda scooted home on the throwing error to put Billings ahead 4-3. Belcher then stole second and later scored to make it 5-3 when Bell fielded Eymann's grounder, but unleashed another wild throw to first base. Helena closed to within 5-4 on a run-scoring single by Matt Gamel in the fifth. In looking to go 8-0 on the season, the Brewers went ahead 1-0 in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Gamel and Bell. In the third, Helena's Fermaint scored on a passed ball and teammate Ryan Braun made it 3-0 when he stole third and motored home when Mustang third baseman Ronda couldn't handle catcher Denove's throw. But the Mustangs would rally and are now tied with the Brewers for first place in the Pioneer's Northern Division. "Seven and one is a good start, but we expect to win," said Langham. "We know we have a good team and we go into every game expecting to win." The Mustangs and Brewers will continue their three-game series tonight with a 7:05 start (8:05 Central) at Cobb Field. Billings catcher Chris Denove is hit by Helena?s Stephen Chapman, 70, after catching a force out at home Wednesday night at Cobb Field. Final: Billings (Reds) 6, Helena 4 First taste of defeat -- hardly a clean effort tonight... Helena Box Score: Derek Miller was relieved by Eric Thomas in the middle of the 4th, the same inning SS Michael Bell committed all three of his errors; RF Steve Chapman wasn't charged with an error, but fell down in the 3rd to turn a single into a run-scoring triple; Angel Salome hitless (walked twice), but had a costly passed ball -- you got the sense from the broadcast he has some work to do. A northeast area scout with another organization told me Salome "just couldn't catch" at the time he was drafted last spring -- it's so early, so keep the faith... In progress: Billings (Reds) 5, Helena 4, bottom of the 8th in Billings Just a brutally sloppy game, however with several key double plays turned by each club -- I'm sure a few of you are listening, that last DP turned by the Mustangs in the 8th with runners on 1st and 3rd, one out, was an absolute killer... -

Keep in mind we might stumble upon injury info occasionally, but otherwise the Brewers do not release specific injury details. Repeated from above -- while yeah, we know guys like Tommy Hawk, Chris Saenz, Jesse Harper all are Tommy John guys and we have some info on the others, I don't think yet another pinned thread is necessary. "Current Minor League Rosters Thread" We have that -- it's called the Player Index, and it's completely sortable by just about any category, including of course, by team.

Scott Martens provided me with the latest roster spreadsheet based on my request today, which I'll forward to you. That's why I was able to go live with the latest on Wilhelmsen.
