  1. The Brewers have dipped into the post-draft undrafted free agent pool and signed OF Winston Pearson out of Jacksonville (Alabama) State University, and assigned the 5'11", 190 lb. Pearson to Arizona. He'll be 23 years old in July. Winston Pearson JSU Player Profile: www.jsugamecocksports.com...0as%20int) Pearson slugged well in 2005 -- his two-season numbers are included here: www.jsugamecocksports.com...ARR.HTM#22 The Brewers have also added another player to the Arizona roster, apparently a Latin signee, LHP Julio Guzman, a 6'1", 170 lb. 17-year-old. Of the 21 active pitchers on the Arizona roster, only three are left-handed -- newcomer Guzman, 2005 10th round pick Steve Garrison, and 2004 8th round pick Brandon Parillo.
  2. Indeed, the Southern League All-Star Game July 13th is three days after the Futures Game, helping to explain Nelson Cruz' absence from the SL affair.
  3. any tv coverage of the all star game No ESPN or ESPN2, if that's what you mean -- if you have high speed, the game is free with the link above. Anyone else getting a blackout message for the SAL All-Star game? Working fine, as of the bottom of the 4th, no Power players in the game yet -- I have since switched video back to the Brewers, however. There is a Gameday link available to watch it that way, too: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...sp?mc=_sal
  4. Final: Arizona Mariners 15, Arizona Brewers 2 Brewers 0-3 in the games we know about; four more errors, ten walks, two HBP, only one extra-base hit among the seven Brewer base hits -- pretty much what you'd expect the final score to reflect... Arizona Box Score: Hopefully Lenny Leclercq had big games in the two missing box scores - he's 0-for-9 with seven K's and is watching 17-year-old Harold Mejia play SS; eight unearned runs, so while only 18-year-old Venezuelan Alirio Ledezma was shelled, the other four hurlers weren't exactly stellar; so many Latin products here -- is there another Iribarren or Escobar in the group? 5. Huntsville Press Release: What, no Nelson Cruz? Eveland and Stetter make SL All-Star teamHuntsville, AL- The Southern League of Professional Baseball has announced that pitchers Dana Eveland and Mitch Stetter of the Stars have been selected to play for the North Division team in the 2005 Southern League All-Star Game on July 13th at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, AL. The all-star rosters were selected by a vote of Southern League field managers, radio broadcasters, and print media. Eveland, 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 16 starts for Huntsville this season, was selected in the 16th round of the 2002 draft by Milwaukee and is in his first full season of double-A baseball. He shares the league lead in wins with Enrique Gonzalez of Tennessee and Sean Tracey of Birmingham and is also tied for tops in the league with Mike Thompson of Mobile in innings pitched with 95. The southpaw also ranks fifth in the league in earned run average. Stetter owns a record of 1-3 with a 2.20 ERA and leads the Stars with six saves. He was selected in the 16th round of the 2003 draft and is in his first season with Huntsville after splitting the 2004 season with Single-A Beloit and High Desert in the Brewers farm system. The left-hander has been scored on in only seven of his 28 appearances and earned his first win of the year Saturday in the Stars 6-2 victory over Jacksonville. The Southern League will announce the South division All-Star team tomorrow. Starting line-ups for both teams will be announced July 6th. The Stars conclude their four game series with the Jacksonville Suns tonight at 7:05pm at Joe Davis Stadium.

  12. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sports/200506284/ Pitcher has secret to his success Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Robert Hinton wasn't born when his dad, Rich, pitched in his final Major League game with the 1979 Seattle Mariners. Nor did Hinton inherit dad's much-coveted left-handed delivery that helped lead to a six-year Big League career as a member of the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Mariners and World Champion 1976 Cincinnati Reds. "I drew the short straw there," joked Hinton, a 20-year old, right-handed reliever for the West Virginia Power. But Hinton is blessed with the lively right arm and savvy baseball mind that helped him make a nearly seamless transition from lifelong starting pitcher to South Atlantic League All-Star reliever. In his second professional season -- and first in the bullpen -- Hinton will represent the Power in tonight's Sally League All-Star game, slated for 7:30 in Augusta, Ga. (6:30 Central). Shortstop Alcides Escobar and second baseman Hernan Iribarren will join Hinton in Augusta. "It's a great honor for me," Hinton said. "I had a pretty good first half, but it wasn't something I was expecting. It kind of surprised me, but it was a pleasant surprise." Hinton, who sports a 2-3 record with a 3.25 ERA and a team-high four saves, has had to quickly adjust both physically and mentally to his new role. "As a starter you pitch differently," Hinton said. "You want to get quick outs, you want to pitch to contact and pace yourself because you want to pitch seven of eight innings. "As a closer, you come in with the game on the line and you want to pitch with, I don't want to say max effort, but with more effort trying to get three quick strikeouts or whatever. "The mental side is a lot different, too. When you start, you know that every fifth day you're starting. As a closer, you might sit in the pen four days in a row and not pitch, then all of the sudden you pitch three days in a row." And it's those back-to-back-to-back pitching appearances that required Hinton to make his biggest change on the mound. "It's different, because you might pitch one day, then come out the next day and feel a little stiff," Hinton said. "That's the day you have to rely on your breaking pitches and change up because you know that your fastball isn't going to be there. You have to adjust a lot." But helping out with those adjustments is the fact that Rich is always just a phone call away. "As far as coaching, I owe him tons," said Hinton of his dad. "After an outing, I call him and we go over the game. There's a lot of wisdom there that I can learn from." There's also plenty of pitching wisdom in the Power dugout in pitching coach John Curtis who, ironically, shared the same 1972 Topps rookie baseball card with the elder Hinton. Curtis, a Boston rookie, shared card No. 724 with the Yankees' Hinton and the Orioles' Mickey Scott. "I pitched against his dad, Rich," Curtis said. "We came up together and we actually shared a rookie card, so I have a little history with Robert even though I never met him until this year." And although Curtis is still getting to know the younger Hinton, he is already impressed with his willingness to do what's asked of him on the mound. "There were some delivery issues that he conquered," Curtis said. "He's been as consistent at pitching as anyone on the staff. He's closed and he's pitched long. He's done a wonderful job no matter how we've had to use him. "He's a well-deserving All-Star. "It didn't surprise me. I feel proud that Robert's representing us. He deserves it, so he shouldn't be surprised." West Virginia Power pitcher Bob Hinton is the son of former Major Leaguer Rich Hinton. 13. Final: Helena 9, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 6 Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...805_03.txt Rallies help keep Brewers undefeated By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer Two-out rallies don't come any sweeter, or as it turned out for the Brewers Monday night, any more crucial. The Helena Brewers tallied five runs during a two-out hitting spree against Missoula Monday, a rally that ended up saving the team when the Osprey went on a run of their own in the ninth. Helena was able to hang on to their lead and win the game 9-6, staying perfect for the season as they collected their seventh win. The Brewers had led the fourth inning off with back-to-back fly outs, but quickly forgot about that when the next four batters all hit doubles to left field. The Brewers proceeded to bat through the order, scoring five runs on six hits. Helena scored again in the sixth when Angel Salome drove in a run, and twice more in the eighth when Salome sent a double to right. The New York slugger had five RBI on three hits in the game. Tyler Morrison was awarded the win for Helena. Morrison pitched six complete innings, the most a Brewer pitcher has thrown all season. In his time on the mound, the 20-year-old pitcher struck out five, allowed only three hits and one run. That run came on a lead off homer from Osvaldo Diaz in the fourth, and was the only run the Osprey would get until they gave the Brewers a scare in the ninth. In the inning, Diaz reached with one out on an error, and the next batter, Bryan Byrne was hit by a pitch. Rusty Ryal singled to drive in Diaz and the Brewers pulled reliever Ryan Marion. Luis Bernal took over on the mound and gave up a three-run home run to the first batter he faced, Ricardo Cruz. Another runner crossed the plate on an RBI single before the Brewers brought in David Welch to relieve Bernal. With the tying run in the on deck circle, Welch struck out the only batter he faced, getting his first save of the year. The game was the third in a row in Helena that has been delayed for rain. Helena and Missoula will square off again tonight, seeing action from Helena LHP Derek Miller while Donald Julio (0-1, 13.50 ERA) will pitch for Missoula. The game, baring any interference from the rain, will begin at 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central). 14. Final: Brevard County 10, Jupiter (Marlins) 3 Game Summary from the Hammerheads' Site: Brewers organization taking advantage of some struggling opponent affiliates at the moment... JUPITER, FL- The Hammerheads dropped their tenth game in a row on Monday night, falling 10-3 to the Brevard County Manatees. The game was preceded by a 1:03 minute rain delay. Jupiter is still winless in the second half of the Florida State League season with a record of 0-5. The game began with promise for the Hammerheads. Angel Molina knocked in two runs in the bottom of the first, and Patrick Arlis added an RBI single to put Jupiter up 3-0 after one. Manatees starter Ryan Anderson was chased after a third of an inning after allowing all three Hammerhead runs. Brevard came right back in the top of the second, with a leadoff home run from Lou Palmisano to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brevard would tie the score with two runs in the third. After allowing the tying run, Hammerheads starter James Russ retired the last seven batters he faced, and was lifted after the fifth inning with the score still tied at three. Russ went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight. Jimmy DeMontel (1-2) came on to start the sixth and gave up the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Palmisano. Brevard would not look back, going on to score four in the 7th and two in the 8th. The Hammerheads and Manatees will finish their three game series tomorrow at Roger Dean Stadium on Knothole Gang night. Game time is at 6:35 p.m. (5:35 Central). 15. Final: Huntsville 7, Jacksonville (Dodgers) 5 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for Brandon Gemoll photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=649 Brandon Gemoll belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning to put Huntsville ahead to stay in a 7-5 win over Jacksonville Monday night in the third game of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 5-2 in the second half of the season and took over sole possession of first place in the North Division after Carolina was defeated by Birmingham for a second straight night, while the Suns dropped to 3-4 in the second half and 41-35 overall. The Stars won for a fifth time in six games and lifted their record at home to 20-19. Vinny Rottino singled with one out in the fifth, moved to second base on a passed ball, stayed there when Nelson Cruz walked before Gemoll drove a 3-2 offering over the wall in right-center field to push Huntsville ahead 6-4. It was Gemoll?s fourth home run of the season and his second in four games. The long ball knocked Jacksonville starter Joel Hanrahan out of the game and was the 12th he has allowed in 10 starts with the Suns. Nelson Cruz doubled home Rottino in the seventh to extend the Stars advantage to 7-4 and increase his season runs batted in total to 54. The Huntsville right fielder hit a solo home run in the third inning to put the Stars ahead 3-2 and has now hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games at home and driven in 25 runs in the last 28 games. Stars starter Dana Eveland was taken out of the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning after the Suns had scored twice to move in front 4-3. Khalid Ballouli got the Stars out of trouble by inducing Nick Alvarez to bounce into an inning-ending fielder?s choice on the first pitch he threw. The right-hander then yielded a lone run over the next four innings to grab his third win of the year, first in relief, and end a personal four-game losing streak. Ballouli struck out five and did not walk a batter in the longest outing by a Stars reliever this season. Eveland was charged with four runs on eight hits and four walks after allowing only four earned runs in 33 innings in his last five outings. The series wraps up Tuesday night, as right-hander Dennis Sarfate gets the starting nod for the Stars against Suns right-hander Justin Orenduff. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. In the process, the Stars stayed in gear for 7-5 victory Monday against the Jacksonville Suns at Joe Davis Stadium. Nelson Cruz sparked the Stars to their fifth win in six tries with two hits in two at bats and added a pair of walks. He crushed a home run in the third inning and doubled in the seventh. "I was patient at the plate today, I got my pitch and I swung at it," Cruz said. After being outscored 255-340 in the first half of the season, the Stars have outscored foes 49-25 in a 5-2 start in the season's second half. "Everyone is happy, we are playing good," Cruz said. "We have put pitching and hitting together and that is the key to the game." The Stars opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Tony Gwynn Jr. scored on an error by Jacksonville shortstop Joel Guzman. Jacksonville answered in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Russ Martin doubled to right field and Nicolas Alvarez followed him with a single to left field, plating Martin. Joel Hanrahan then struck out looking to end the inning. In Huntsville's half of the second inning, John Vanden Berg led off with a single to shallow right field. Callix Crabbe tripled down the right-field line. The right fielder bobbled the ball, which gave Vanden Berg time to cross the plate. Crabbe was stranded at third. Jacksonville answered in the top of the third when Delwyn Young scored on a sacrifice fly by Guzman. The Stars broke the tie on Cruz's home run in the bottom of the inning. There was no scoring in the fourth inning, but the game broke open in the fifth as the Suns scored two in the top half and the Stars plated three in the bottom half. Jacksonville's Todd Donovan walked to open the inning. Donovan stole second and then moved to third on a fly-out by Young. Andy LaRoche's single scored Donovan. LaRoche scored on a single by James Loney. In the bottom of the fifth, Brandon Gemoll hit a laser over the right-center field fence, scoring Vinny Rottino and Nelson Cruz. "I think Gemoll did an awesome job, because that pitcher was pitching good, and when he got his pitch it was gone," Cruz said. Huntsville added to their lead in the seventh inning on a Cruz double, scoring Rottino. The only other run scored was in the top of the ninth inning. Guzman doubled to right-center field to score LaRoche, but Loney flailed at a curve ball to end the game. Huntsville starting pitcher Dana Eveland had allowed only four earned runs in his last five starts, but he allowed three Monday. He did not make it out of the fifth inning, leaving the bases loaded for relief pitcher Khalid Ballouli. Eveland pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks with eight hits. Ballouli (3-6) notched the win for the Stars. Joel Hanrahan (4-4) took the loss. 16. Nashville Media Notes for Monday (PDF format): www.nashvillesounds.com/pdf/notes.pdf Final: Nashville 10, Oklahoma (Rangers) 7 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Brad Nelson photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1659 OKLAHOMA CITY ? The Nashville Sounds won their third in a row and picked up their eighth win in their last 11 contests on Monday evening, hanging a 10-7 defeat on the Oklahoma RedHawks in the third game of a four-game series at SBC Bricktown Ballpark. The loss was Oklahoma?s 13th in a row, while Nashville (43-36) moved to a season-best seven games over .500 and maintained its 3 ½ game lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Eight different Nashville players drove in a run in the contest. The Sounds posted a double-digit hit total for the fifth straight game and plated 10 or more runs for the fifth time in 11 contests against the RedHawks this season. Sounds infielder Tony Zuniga extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-5 evening while outfielder Corey Hart continued his hot hitting with a two-hit effort that extended his streak to seven games. Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead with three runs against Sounds starter Rick Helling in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run Chad Allen homer. For the third time in the series, Nashville rallied from an early deficit and took a 4-3 advantage with four runs in the top of the second. Sounds outfielder Corey Hart opened the frame by extending his hitting streak to seven games by ripping his 23rd double of the year. Brad Nelson followed with an RBI single off Oklahoma starter Josh Rupe to put the Sounds on the board. Julio Mosquera and Steve Scarborough added run-scoring singles of their own later in the frame, the latter tying the contest at 3-3. After both players moved up a base on a Rupe wild pitch, Mosquera scored on a Dave Krynzel RBI groundout to put Nashville into the lead. Hart continued his solid night in the third when he belted a one-out solo homer to left-center off Rupe to up the lead to 5-3. The blast was his seventh of the year. Audio Link of Corey Hart's HR: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-27.mp3 The RedHawks got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Manny Alexander?s run-scoring groundout. The Sounds put up another four-spot in the top of the fifth for some breathing room and a 9-4 cushion. Rehabbing third baseman Russell Branyan made his Sounds debut by drawing a pinch-hit walk to open the frame. Warren Morris followed with a single and both players scored on Nelson?s two-run triple to left. Zuniga singled to plate Nelson and Scarborough moved him to third with a knock of his own to chase Rupe. Ryan Knox greeted Oklahoma reliever Justin Thompson with a sacrifice fly to plate Zuniga. Oklahoma posted another single run in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back one-out doubles by Adrian Gonzalez and Jason Conti against Helling. RedHawks designated hitter Chris Richard greeted Nashville reliever Jeff Bennett with a leadoff solo homer to right-center in the bottom of the sixth, the slugger?s fifth roundtripper of the campaign. Branyan (1-for-2) recorded the first hit of his rehab stint, driving an RBI double to right in the top of the eighth off Erasmo Ramirez to score Knox and increase the Nashville lead to 10-6. Former Sound Keith McDonald pulled Oklahoma within three at 10-7 in the bottom of the frame, smacking a solo homer to left off Andy Pratt. The tater was the RedHawks? third of the evening and the backstop?s second of the year. Helling (6-3) earned the victory after allowing five runs on eight hits over his five frames. Rupe (1-2) took the loss after surrendering nine runs on 10 hits in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Jose Capellan recorded the final four outs for Nashville to pick up his third save and extend his scoreless inning streak to 9 1/3 since moving to the bullpen in early June. The Sounds look for the sweep when the teams wrap up the four-game set with a 7:05 p.m. CT finale on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Justin Lehr (7-6, 4.91) will man the bump for Nashville. RedHawks southpaw Ryan Snare (1-2, 5.65) provides the opposition. 17. Pioneer League Player of the Week Angel Salome, Helena 6 G, 26 AB, 8 R, 12 H, 4 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .462 AVG, .533 OBP, .846 SLG, 1 SB The Helena Brewers were the only team to make it through the first full week of the short-season schedule without a loss, thanks in large part to their catcher, Angel Salome, who had a pair of four hit games and a three-hit game on his way to a .462 average, two homers and 11 RBIs in six games. The Brewers' 2004 fifth-round pick out of George Washington High School in the Bronx, Salome homered and drove in a pair of runs in each of his first two games before going 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs in a 17-5 drubbing of Missoula on June 23. The 5-foot-7 backstop capped off the week with another 4-for-5 performance, hitting two more doubles and driving in three runs. For the week, Salome led the Pioneer League in average (.462), hits (12), RBIs (11), on-base percentage (.533) and extra-base hits (six).

  19. That's it for this Link Reporter until perhaps the late, late overnight. Unique opportunity this evening -- my daughter will be taking part in a special kids' clinic with the Red Sox coaches this afternoon at Fenway -- of course, that means perhaps a chance meeting with Dale Sveum http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . We then get bleacher seats for Indians - Red Sox. You just can't escape the Red Sox here -- I don't dislike them, they're just obviously not my favorite team. But there literally isn't any escape from the obsession that is Red Sox baseball in New England. I respect that, but it is a bit over the top -- kind of like someone detailing every minutia of Brewer minor league baseball http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

  24. Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Suns too hot at plate for Stars By JOHN FERRY Times Sports Staff jferry@htimes.com Statistics mean something when it comes to the Jacksonville Suns. At least, they did on Sunday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Jacksonville leads the Southern League in runs scored, walks, hits and home runs. Andy LaRoche, with the team just 10 games after being called up from Vero Beach, has a total of 26 homers this season. That number, by the brother of Braves outfielder Adam LaRoche, is as good as there is in minor league ball. LaRoche belted his latest homer against the Huntsville Stars, one of four hits he collected, and Jacksonville rolled to a 12-5 victory. The Suns out-hit the Stars 17-10. Jacksonville might not have outdone the tricks of Jake the Diamond Dog, who was very entertaining in a promotion as he served drinks to the umpires, took bats back to the dugout, and caught Frisbees, but the Suns had way too much firepower on this night. "We've been doing this the last couple of months," said Jacksonville hitting coach Steve Yeager, the former Dodger from the mid-1980s who is back in pro ball this season. "I don't do anything myself. Our players take pride in themselves." Catcher Jeff Winchester, who produced three hits for the Stars, gave credit to the winners, who had built a 12-1 lead in the fourth inning. "Jacksonville has exceptional hitters," Winchester said. "There's no relief in sight in their lineup." The defeat broke a four-game winning streak for the Stars. "We hit a snag after playing some pretty good baseball," Winchester said. "That Mobile series (three wins in four tries) built our confidence level." Vinny Rottino also collected three hits for Huntsville, which fell to 4-2 in the second half while Jacksonville evened its record at 3-3. Joel Guzman had three hits for Jacksonville, which put the game away by scoring four runs in the first inning and four more in the second. The Suns added a final four in the fourth. Ryan Costello (0-4) took the loss for the Stars, lasting five batters into the second inning. Glenn Woolard went the next six innings and Brett Evert the final two. Starter Eric Hill (5-4) picked up the win for Jacksonville, going the first five innings. A two-run single by Guzman was the highlight of Jacksonville's first four-run inning. Delwyn Young doubled home two in the second, just ahead of LaRoche's homer that made it 8-0. In the third, Winchester reached on an infield single and scored on a ground out. Guzman singled in a run in the Suns fourth, and an outfield error allowed two more to come across. Guzman scored on a wild pitch, making it 12-1. The Stars put together three runs in their fourth. Rottino singled, Brandon Gemoll walked, and Enrique Cruz belted a long homer over the fence in left. In the eighth, Winchester doubled and scored on a single by Evert. Huntsville produced four double plays but also left 10 runners on base. The Stars and Suns play the third game in the four-game series tonight at 7:05. Dana Eveland (8-4) is scheduled to pitch for Huntsville against Joel Hanrahan (4-3).
  25. Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005062623 Power shackles Captains 2-0 It may have only been two games, but the West Virginia Power claimed its first series sweep of the season Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Lake County (Ohio) at Appalachian Power Park. Josh Wahpepah and three relievers combined on the five-hit shutout. Wahpepah worked the first five innings, striking out six and allowing just one base runner ? a first-inning single to Captains shortstop Brian Finegan. The 6-foot-5 right-hander threw 60 pitches, 40 for strikes. Forrest Martin took over in the sixth and pitched out of a jam in the seventh. After a walk to designated hitter Wyatt Toregas and a single by right fielder Chad Longworth, Martin settled down and caught third baseman Matt Whitney looking to end the inning. In the eighth inning, Justin Barnes (5-1) allowed only a two-out single to Lake County second baseman Marshall Szabo before giving way to Robert Hinton. The All-Star fanned Finegan to open the ninth, gave up a base hit to Toregas and induced a game-ending double play off the bat of left fielder Mike Butia to pick up his fifth save. The shutout is the fourth of the year for Power pitchers. West Virginia scored both its runs with two out in the eighth inning. Alcides Escobar opened the rally with a base hit to center field. He promptly stole second base and scored on Hernan Iribarren?s broken-bat single to left. Iribarren swiped second and scored on a Will Lewis single. Chris Niesel (5-3) took the loss for Lake County, allowing both runs on three hits. Captains starter Chuck Lofgren was nearly as impressive as Wahpepah, scattering two hits and a pair of walks over seven innings.
